Boot camp raises $15,000 for trustJessie Johnston
Nelson College for Girls’ gymnasium was a sea of pink during last Sunday’s Boot Camp for Breast Cancer.Over 100 pink-laden men and women turned out to dance, jump, run and three-legged walk around the girls college gym in a bid to raise money for breast cancer. Several groups joined in the activities, including team Peek a Boobies, who say their motivation for supporting the day was down to their personal connection with breast cancer. “We have friends amongst us who have had breast cancer, plus we’ve done it before and it was fun, and it’s for a good cause so we decided to do it again. This time we’ve actually added a few extra people who haven’t done it before,” says Peek A Boobies leader, Carol Parkinson. “It’s really fun, the fact you’re doing something fun for a good cause, what more could you ask for, and plus there’s bubbles.”
Dental Council ‘put public at risk’The dental licence of Dr Nicholas Smith should have been stripped years earlier, according to a prominent member of the Nelson dental profession, who says mem-bers of the public were put at risk.Dr Nicholas Smith closed his Stoke clinic this month after years of complaints and a conviction for fraud. His business went into liquidation owing $164,948 to pa-tients who had pre-paid for dental work, staff, the IRD and other unsecured credi-tors.But one member of the dental profession,
who spoke on the condition of anonym-ity, says the Dental Council should have stepped in years earlier, and blames it for putting the public at risk. “They really haven’t done the public any favours. They haven’t done the profession any favours or Nic any favours, really. Given the long list of issues over the years, they’ve got an obligation under the Health Practition-ers Competence Assurance Act to protect the public, and there’s a general feeling amongst the dental community that they haven’t fulfilled their obligation.”
The Dental Council did not renew Dr Smith’s practicing licence and he handed in his registration at the start of this month. Other Nelson dentists are now working to make sure Dr Smith’s patients are cared for, but none would speak on the record to Nelson Weekly after an email circulated asking for them not to speak to media. But
the source says dentists are helping. “The key message is that the wider dental com-munity are coming together and really want to support the patients.” Chief executive of the Dental Council, Ma-rie Warner, was unavailable for comment.Liquidator, Geoff Falloon, says another dental practise has bought the former Stoke Dental Clinic. His liquidator report shows 38 patients are owed money, includ-ing one for $3100.It also shows the shareholders bank ac-count is overdrawn by $550,349.

The efforts of this year’s Boot Camp for Breast Cancer managed to raise a total of $15,000. Event sponsors donated $9000, while $4000 came
from individual registrations and sponsorships, and the remainder from raffle tickets and refreshments. “It’s been another great fun-draising event for the trust, and we’re truly awed with the support we’ve had, and of course, we have to thank the community of participants there on the day for making it such a success. “Everyone said they had a grand time,” says Kate Coote, founder of the Nelson Re-gional Breast and Gynaeco-logical Trust. All money raised at Boot Camp for Breast Cancer, for the Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust, stays in the top of the South Island, says Kate, one reason the event is so popular.

Nelson lawyer offers flights to fugitive findersA Nelson lawyer who wants to gift a New Zealand holiday to the person who tipped off Brazilian authorities to escaped murderer Phillip John Smith’s whereabouts, says he has also had offers from tourism busi-nesses around the country.John Fitchett has ties to Brazil after some recent visits, and has offered to buy airfares for the woman and her partner or friend, as a gesture of thanks for her part in locating the violent offender.John had put out a call on television show Seven Sharp for other Kiwis to extend their generosity by provid-ing accommodation, activities and meals for the woman during her
stay here. “So far I’ve had 14 people from around the country contact me with offers of activities or accommoda-tion,” he told Nelson Weekly.The offers include jet boating, a heli-copter ride up Mt Cook and accom-modation in Nelson. John says the idea behind the offer was to reward the citizen.“I had the idea to just do this thing in a fit of euphoria, shall we say, when I heard it was a member of the public who dobbed him in,” he told the New Zealand Herald last week. “For a private individual to find him and tip him off, I thought that was really great.”

First Fight 4 Victory bouts announcedMohammed Ali once told the world that he could “float like a butterfly”. But as Nelson’s eight newest boxers were unveiled on Friday night, the only but-terflies around were located firmly in their stomachs.The eight were announced at the “After the Bell” fundraiser on Friday as the first confirmed fighters for the Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event, which will be held at Saxton Stadium on April 4, next year.The date for the next Fight 4 Victory was announced in Nelson Weekly last month and, since then, organisers Barry Galbraith and Paul Hamp-ton have been inundated with emails from people keen to take part. But the pair have had to care-fully partner people together to ensure safe and even fights and say they’re thrilled to an-nounce the first four of eight planned bouts“We’re really happy with the people we have and we are just so happy that so many people were keen to do this and sup-port the trust and the kids. That’s what this is all about,” says programme director at the trust, Paul Hampton.Among the match ups are two lawyers – Emma Riddell and
Michelle Byczkow, two ser-geants, Steffan James from the police and Justin Carter from the army, and two hairdressers, Libby Brumwell from Tonic Hairculture and Hazel Tre-thowen of Ursula Harris. The fourth fight announced is between Pomeroys Coffee gen-eral manager, Hayden Thom-son, and Nelson Weekly editor, Andrew Board.Three other fights are close to being confirmed and will be announced over the next few weeks, says Paul.After the Bell raised close to $10,000 for the Victory Box-ing Charitable Trust at the

Blackstick Anita Punt, Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning boxer David Nyika and former boxer and league star Monty Betham en-tertained the crowd with some insights into their sports, but it was the advice from Monty that was left ringing in the ears of the eight fighters: “Prepara-tion is everything, be fit.”Fighter Michelle Byczkow says she is nervous but excited about the bout.“I’ve had a couple of moments where I’ve been ‘oh my gosh, what have I done?’ But mostly, I’m pretty excited.”

School library demolished
ROSE DAY: Freya Jordan and Lauren Cox enjoy the Broadgreen Rose Day, held last Sunday. Broadgreen Historic House in Stoke hosted its annual community event to celebrate the roses coming into bloom. There were food and craft stalls, beautiful music and, of course, the chance to wander amongst the flowers and soak up the atmosphere of Nelson’s history. Broad-green is home to the Samuel’s Rose Garden which was named after the late Mr S J Samuels, a devoted rose nurseryman. Henley School’s leaky library is being demolished and a new one built, after the Ministry of Education decided “that it will be more economical to rebuild the building than to repair it”.The library has been closed after inspections found that about 90 per cent of the framing timber in the ten-year-old, $984,000 building has been damaged by water. Last week, the ministry’s head of the education infrastructure service, Kim Shannon, confirmed that the library will be
demolished and replaced with a newly-designed building. “We have immediately started to dismantle the old library building and expect to be able to reuse some of the materials, such as doors and window fittings, in the new building,” Kim says. “The old building will be removed by Christmas and the new building is expected to be completed around the middle of next year.”Kim says the ministry has reached a commercial settlement with the
contractor who constructed the building. “The matter has been resolved and is subject to strict terms of confidentiality, so we are unable to comment on the cause of the issues or how much the new building will cost.”Henley principal John Armstrong says he is delighted with the ministry’s decision and pleased that it has acted “decisively and quickly” to resolve the problem. John says the library is a key building at their school and they can’t wait until the new one is completed.

Dentist comes to Nelson mum’s rescueThe mother-of-three who is owed $600 by struck-off Stoke dentist Nicholas Smith has had her dental bill covered by other dentist.Stacey Gribble had been paying the Stoke Dental Centre by automatic payment until there was enough in her account to get treatment. But, when she called the clinic two weeks ago, she was told it had closed and Stacey later found out the business had been liquidated. She told Nelson Weekly last week that the money was a year’s worth of payments and that it was a huge blow for her young family.But within hours of publishing, the Weekly received a call from Gentle Dental owner Maxine Noar, offer-ing $600 of credit to Stacey.“I read it in your paper and I just felt so upset. The fact that Stacey had been putting money in to try and get herself ahead, we’ve got kids too and I know what it’s like to
be struggling. I just wanted to help her.”Gentle Dental wasn’t the only clinic to come forward, either. Nelson Weekly also received calls from two other dentists wanting to help.Stacey says she’s been full of emo-tions over the past few weeks.“It’s a lot of stress off our whole family really, it’s awesome. We’re down to our last dollar every week, so if we had to start again it would have taken another year.”Stacey had her first appointment with Gentle Dental last Friday and says she’s thrilled.“I’m so surprised, but so happy that people wanted to help. Thank you as well to you guys for writing the story, because I wouldn’t have got the help without you.”

Fury from Nelson-based air travellers has been replaced with hope, after Air New Zealand announced a shake-up of its regional air fares last week.Earlier this year, Nelson Weekly readers vented their frustration at the increas-ing cost of air travel and blamed the na-tional carrier for doing away with a fre-quent flyer scheme and making “grab a seat” tickets too difficult to get, and the cost of last-minute travel “exorbitant”.But Air New Zealand announced last week that relief was coming in the form of new last-minute fare prices called “Gotta Go”, and bigger planes flying be-tween Nelson and other major cities.It wasn’t all good news though, with it announced that Nelson will be losing the Nelson to Palmerston North direct route from April next year.The Gotta Go fares will be launched on February 1, next year, and will be a flat rate of $169 one way. The fares are only available for purchase between 90 and 60 minutes prior to departure and Nel-son mayor Rachel Reese says that’s good news for the region. “The ‘Gotta Go’ domestic fares will have a significant impact on our city, mak-ing it more affordable for people from around the country to attend our amaz-ing events. Weekend trips to sunny Nel-
son will be on more people’s agendas moving forward. “Air New Zealand has made a strong commitment to our region, both in terms of increased seats on flights to Auckland and Wellington and the ongo-ing use of Nelson as a technical service centre. We value this long-term part-nership and look forward to continuing to work closely together to support the travel needs of our region’s residents, visitors and business commuters.”Nelson Regional Economic Develop-ment Agency chief executive, Bill Find-later, agreed that the lower cost airfares will have a positive impact on the re-gion. “The lower cost airfares will bene-fit both leisure travellers and last minute business travellers to and from Nelson.
That, and the proposed increase in seat-ing capacity for the major travel routes, will be beneficial to the region”.Nelson Airport chief executive Kaye McNabb reiterated the importance of Nelson as a regional airport and service centre. “We are delighted at the pros-pect of increased maintenance services in this region and will continue to work closely with Air New Zealand to ensure any opportunity is accommodated and supported.” Picton-based Sounds Air have also an-nounced a reshuffle of its flights to and from Nelson, with new times meaning it will be “easier” for people to catch connecting flights out of Wellington. Sounds Air charge $120 for a one-way fare from Nelson to Wellington.

OUR WINE IS BEST: Four Nelson wines won gold medals at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards announced last week. They were Sei-fried Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2014 and Waimea Pinot Gris 2014, each with two golds, and Black-enbrook Nelson Pinot Gris 2013 and Sea level Pinot Gris 2014. A total of 1557 wines across 16 different classes were entered in this year’s com-petition.
ECONOMY STRONG: The Nelson economy has shown solid growth over the past year with unemployment falling to just four per cent, the lowest since June 2009, the latest Nelson Region Economic Development figures show. Tourism international guest nights are up 6.2 per cent in the year to May compared to a year earlier, and 503 new residential building permits were issued in the year to May 2014, the highest they have been since August 2011. However, these improvements haven’t flowed through to con-sumer confidence, with an 18 per cent drop over the last three months in the proportion of households with a positive outlook for the com-ing year.
They say wedding rings are forever and one Nelson man was close to not having a choice.Jewellers at Jens Hansen worked for close to an hour to cut a titanium wedding ring off the man last week.Because of the material, the ring was so difficult to cut through that it took two jewellers and plenty of effort to get the ring off. The man said the ring started to get tight several years ago when he sprained his finger while playing sport. It gradually got worse over the next eight years, before he finally got it off last week after it became “intolerably tight”. Jens Hansen jewellers say the lesson of the week: don’t get a titanium wedding ring.

Spending up in NelsonNelson has had a 10.2 per cent increase in spending for the month of October, according to eftpos transaction business, Paymark.Spending in Nelson through
the network increased to $88.7 million from $80.5 million in the same month in 2013. That is above the national in-crease of eight per cent in October and second only to
Southland, which recorded a 10.9 per cent increase.Spending in takeaway outlets and the accommodation and hospitality sectors were the highest across the country.

High winds batter fishermenFive fishermen were rescued off Cable Bay on Saturday as high winds rocked their boat, making it too dangerous for them to get back to Port Nelson.The Nelson Coastguard, police and the surf lifesavers were all involved in the rescue.The five men went fishing on a 6.5 metre runabout, but high winds in the afternoon left them unable to get out of Cable Bay.Graeme Richard, from Nelson
Coastguard, says police called them and the Surf Lifesavers into help with the rescue, as they were heading onto rocks near Cable Bay. “There were five people on the boat in very unpleasant conditions. A young guy had been very sea sick for most of the day, apparently. They did have life jackets and a VHF radio and cell phone, but the forecast was for strong winds and they hadn’t taken into account that they were the only ones out there,” he
says. “That’s never a good sign.”The coastguard and lifesavers took three people off the boat so they could drive back to Nelson and pick up the trailer. Then a local farmer loaned them his tractor so they could pull the boat to shore at around 5.30pm.“Message is for boaties to check the weather and make sure they have the safety equipment,” says Graeme. “Especially a VHF radio, and make sure they know how to use it.”
It might not be a common form of fundraising, but Stoke School may be on to a winner after their truck show last Saturday. It’s the second time the event has been run after secretary of the PTA, Melanie Edwards, saw potential in an idea voiced by her partner. Having trucks of their own, they believed a show would be great for drivers to catch up, while offering the school a way to raise money. With support from the PTA, Melanie sent letters to various trucking companies which resulted in a turnout of 69 trucks, including a fire engine and ambulance. The total amount raised isn’t known yet but with the estimated 2000 attendee’s, organisers are hoping to see
around $5000 raised for the general running of Stoke School. “I’ve had really, really good feedback from drivers saying it was great, because it allowed them to catch up, kids got to have a look
inside the trucks, which is not normally accessible to them, it was just win-win for everybody and the drivers have really shown interest in next year,” says Melanie. A People’s Choice award was also voted on, with the title
going to Dallas Johnson, a driver for Austin Transport in Richmond. Having put many hours into polishing the truck, Dallas was “stoked” to have won the people’s choice award, says Melanie.

Mike close to reaching target for new lungsAndrew Board
After seven months and $81,000, Mike Corkill is just $19,000 away from the new set of lungs he needs to survive.Mike has a pulmonary hypertension, a rare and incurable lung disorder. To live, he needs a new set of lungs, but the treatment isn’t available in New Zealand because there aren’t enough donors.So Mike, a father of five, needs to raise $100,000 to pay for a transplant and treatment in India. He started his quest for the cash in April with a story in Nelson Weekly. Since then, the community has rallied to raise more than $80,000, much of that from Nelsonians and local businesses. Richmond Mall allowed Mike and his family to collect money in the mall for several months, and the Richmond Lions also donated $2500 to Mike’s cause. They are just two examples of the many groups that have got in behind Mike and his family.There have also been raffles, a quiz night and several other fundraising ideas, including a Givealittle fundraising page.Mike says with the target so close and medical clearance to fly, he and his wife have applied for passports and visas to India, with a tentative plan to fly out in mid-January.But first he needs the final $19,000. Art work bought for NelsonNelsonians have raised $245,000 for a rare painting to be brought to the region.The Rita Angus painting “The Apple Pickers”, with strong con-nections to Nelson, has been bought for the Suter Art Gallery collection. The fundraising effort started with Nelson City Council which contributed $5000, before the community came on board to raise the rest.Nelson mayor Rachel Reese thanked The Suter’s fundraising
team, representatives of the lo-cal apple industry and the wider community, for their generosity.“Over the subsequent ten weeks of fundraising, I have watched with admiration and pleasure the very clear support for this ap-peal across our region as a whole, both from individuals and from corporate entities, excitedly tracking the way the fundrais-ing barometer has gone up each week, closer and closer to the tar-get of $245,000,” says Rachel.
The council does not normally provide additional funding for acquisitions, but on this occa-sion the value of the painting to The Suter collection, and the rare opportunity to acquire it, con-vinced the council to make an exemption, says Rachel.“The painting’s natural home is here and I, for one, am very much looking forward to seeing this lo-cal artwork hanging in pride of place, on the opening day of the new Suter Art Gallery in 2016.”

As a woman in her late-30s who did triathlons and ran half marathons, Andrea Campbell was a picture of health and happiness. Two and a half dec-ades later, she still has the smile but instead of her legs pump-ing inches above the pave-ment they now need help to be perched into her wheelchair.Andrea lives on Collingwood St with her husband George and was diagnosed with mul-tiple sclerosis, an auto immune disease, in 1988. Since then she has slowly lost her balance, control of her limbs and more recently, her ability to walk for more than a few metres. The future isn’t so bright ei-ther, the disease will only get worse and Andrea expects to be wheelchair-bound full-time within 12 months.But there is a way out and she is determined to give it a shot.Andrea has been accepted into a specialised hospital in Israel that can perform an operation to reverse the effects of MS. Ba-sically, doctors take stem cells out of the patient, treat them over a few days and then re-place them in the body. Improved results in balance can be instant, but Andrea isn’t expecting miracles. “I just saw a video with a lady who has just walked six kilo-metres, two years after the treatment. Before the opera-tion, she could only walk a few metres, like me. But I’m a bit older so don’t think it will hap-pen that quick for me.”There are a few hospitals around the world that perform the procedure and it has just become government-funded in Norway. Andrea is sure the
operation will become main-stream in a few years but she doesn’t have time to wait. An-drea needs treatment as soon as possible and the Israel hos-pital has given her a date of May next year.The only problem is money. The procedure – along with travel and accommodation – costs $170,000. That’s more than the Campbells have, so they’re reaching out to the community.Andrea has set up a Givealittle fundraising page in the hope that people will donate, and she’s already had great support. Her “local”, Morrison Street Café, donated several hundred dollars from a charity tin to her cause and Morrison Square is
donating the proceeds from a gold coin gift-wrapping service next month.Family in Ashburton are also hosting a garage sale to raise money and her sisters in the United Kingdom are also host-ing fundraisers. The Department of Conservation (DOC), as part of its Battle for our Birds programme, intends to apply cereal pellet baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) in Nelson Lakes National Park and Rainbow Conservation Area. The pest control is being undertaken to protect native species from rats and possums.
Description of the area:Approximately 13,500 ha made up the western side of the St Arnaud Range adjacent to Lake Rotoiti extending south to include the Travers Valley and the side valleys (Hukere, Hopeless and Cupola) and the remote East Sabine Valley up to an approximate altitude of 1600m above sea level within the Nelson Lakes National Park and a small part of the eastern side of the St Arnaud Range within the Rainbow Conservation Area.Areas affected include the St Arnaud Range Track, Loop Track, Honeydew Track, Lakehead Track, Lakeside Track (south of Whiskey Falls), Travers Track, Cascade Track, Hopeless Creek Track, Cupola Track, and the Sabine Track (between West Sabine Hut and Travers Saddle).
Method of control:Cereal baits containing the pesticide 1080 will be distributed by helicopter over the above area except for the area between the Loop Track and Honeydew Track and some land within 50 metres of the Lakehead and Lakeside Tracks which will be hand sown. The 1080 baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2-3 cm long, cinnamon lures and dyed green. An application of nontoxic pre-feed baits was completed on 8 November 2014.Entry to all public walking tracks within the area will be restricted during and immediately following the 1080 operation until a track inspection is completed. This will be as soon as is practical and no longer than 24 hours after the operation. Warning signs will be placed at all normal points of entry to the area and at huts within the area immediately prior to the 1080 operation.Always remember when in the area:• DO NOT touch bait or bait bags• WATCH CHILDREN at all times• DO NOT eat animals from this area• DO NOT allow DOGS access to animal carcasses (noting dogs are prohibited in the Nelson Lakes National Park). A solar system that heats your hot water at night was just one of the sustainable-living options available at this year’s Ecofest and Growables fair.Founders Heritage Park was a hive of activity as the public flocked to see the latest and greatest in environmentally friendly solutions for home and garden, with around 4000 people, in total, en-joying the event. Organiser of Ecofest and Growables, Ali Lawley, says each have a strong follow-ing, but combining the two events, as well as a new venue, was a great deci-sion for both exhibitors and the general public. “The general feedback that we got from the Ecofest exhibitors was that they were really pleased with the new loca-tion. The event has historically been at the Trafalgar Centre, but the overall feel this year was a lot more relaxed and a lot more festival-like.” Among exhibitors was The Alternative Energy Company, a new business to Nelson, offering some "exciting new op-tions" for more energy-efficient homes that haven’t been seen here before. “Events like Ecofest give us the oppor-
tunity to show the advanced technology we have available,” says director, Geoff Read. “The product we’re marketing is quite revolutionary really, in what is available in New Zealand. It’s the next generation in solar hot water heating.” Their solar hot water system generated a lot of interest among event goers, prob-ably because one eight-kilo solar panel can produce heated water for a 300 litre cylinder all year round, even at night. A specially designed refrigerant, at nega-
tive 22 degrees, means the system is capable of taking energy from the at-mosphere and heating the water at tem-peratures as low as negative 15 degrees. There were plenty of other innovative ways to run an environmentally-friend-ly household, including the transport used to get there. Get Moving’s bike valet was put to good use and Ali says she was thrilled with the number of people who actually took up the challenge and came to the event on a bike.

Although they operate three individual businesses, Andrea and Michael Dell, their son Luke and daughter-in-law Amy, have a unique business situation. Since the age of 16, Luke has worked along-side his parents at their gallery and fram-ing business in Christchurch, and the en-vironment Luke grew up in, is one he has chosen to make his career. Although he isn’t on his parent’s payroll anymore, their new gallery premise on Nelson’s Halifax St has created the perfect space to accommo-date everyone’s talents and passions. After losing their gallery and framing business to Christchurch’s red zone, Andrea and
Michael made the decision to move to Nel-son, while Luke, who had been operating his own framing business in Tahunanui with wife Amy for six years, was in dire need of a larger workshop. The Ruther-ford Gallery premisis, with it’s potential to accommodate the requirements of all three busi-nesses became available and now, with earthquake strength-ening and three months worth of renovations completed, Nel-son City Framers, Broomfields & Co Quality Handcraft Sup-plies and Bay Area Cycles are
well settled in. The advantage of working together as a family revolves predomi-nantly around a great source of support. Being framers from way back, Andrea and Michael are well placed to help Luke when
business is busy and in turn, when Andrea is away, Amy is on hand to take over in Broomfields & Co. Plus, getting to see their grandchildren regularly is an added bonus for Andrea and Michael.

From the delicate, to vintage inspired motorcycles, Michael’s online custom vintage parts business, Bay Area Cycles, is represented through his show space in the gallery. With an interest in bikes going back to his teenage years, Michaels venture is relatively new and specialises in early British bikes from the sixties and seventies. While he does have a pref-erence for British motorcycles, the parts are, more often than not, universal and able to be fitted onto many different makes and models. From tail lights, handle bars, seats and springs, Bay Area Cycles is aimed towards the keen garage bike builder who wants to put their own mark on a motor-cycle restoration. As well as selling the parts, Michael has regularly put his own hands to the task of restoring bikes, us-ing both custom vintage parts, as well as classic restorations to factory standards; he even scratch builds custom bikes as demos to showcase his range of parts. Framing can be just as much a work of art as the piece it-self. “The most enjoyable part of the job is the design side; it’s almost the most crucial. You’ve still got to be able to do the technical side, but I think the biggest thing is to get that design side right. Apart from a stint in Nelson’s commer-cial fishing sector, framing is all Luke has ever done. An OE gave him the chance to do some framing in Britain, and then four years was spent working for one of the top framers in Christchurch, Ronald Motram. Luke and Amy spent six years running the business, formally, The Guilded Edge, out of a double garage in Tahunanui, now the renamed Nelson City Framers is all go in a fully functioning workshop of its own. “The setup is a dream, we’ve got somewhere to show-case what we do” and with upgraded equipment and an ex-pansive workshop, Luke says they are a much more efficient operation, with the ability to do more and undertake larger framing projects. With an extensive wall display of custom frames, and the ability to offer hand finished frames using stains, gesso and gold leaf, Nelson City Framers has the right solution for anything that needs framing and one of the best workshops in the country in which to do it.
Broomfields & Co, established in Christchurch in 1981, has been owned for six years, by textiles enthusiast, Andrea Dell. After salvaging the business from the red zone, Broomfields & Co finally secured a lease at ‘The Tannery’ in Christch-urch. Moving to Nelson was already decided on, and Andrea was pleased to be bringing her business to Nelson, while continuing the Christchurch store. Specialising in needle-craft supplies, Andrea’s vision for the store is an inspirational place for those looking to start or to re-ignite a passion for the craft. Broomfields & Co also benefits from Andrea’s love of colour and design. “I just love everything about textiles, I really enjoy putting colours together and helping customer’s with that side of things.” The world of needlecraft isn’t what it used to be says Andrea, “there are some really lovely, sim-ple contemporary designs and with divine threads, fabrics, accessories and everything else you need to create quality needle art, people are falling in love with it all over again.” Broomfields & Co plans for early next year will see the in-troduction of stitching groups, a great opportunity for like-minded people to share ideas and get help with their needle-craft projects.

With a full mechanical work-shop and two ‘A’ grade mechanics on board, Mo-bil Stoke Automotive and Commercial are well equipped to deal with any issue regarding all makes and model of car, van and 4x4. After taking over the workshop on October 1, 2013, owners Dave and Sandy Neiman have just celebrated their first year in the driver’s seat of the business, and have made a good start towards their promise of quality service to vehicle owners. Throughout their first year they have enjoyed meeting and helping a number of wonderful customers, and are de-termined to improve the service they can provide with a future plan to update their equipment and machinery. They aren’t let-ting their celebration of a success-ful year get in the way though; it’s business as usual at Mobil Stoke Automotive and Commercial, with the workshop team busy keep-ing people’s vehicles safe and on the road. It’s a family business that prides itself on “good old-fashion service and reliability,” and Dave and Sandy are happy to be working alongside their children; Ashleigh being their full time office per-son and son Brad taking on an apprenticeship in the workshop. Sandy joins Ashleigh in the office
two days a week, while Kelvin Burke rounds out the mechanical team, which boasts a combined experience of 60 years in the industry. CHURCH HILLNelson’s first church service in 1841 was held in a tent on what was to become Church Hill. At that time the hill also housed the Post Office, the courthouse, a hospital tent, and
the New Zealand Company’s bar-racks and storerooms. Following the Wairau Massacre in 1843, the hill was hastily fortified and named Fort Arthur, in honour of Captain Wakefield who died at the Wairau.

This negative is thought to be of Leslie Malcolm Newlove. There were three brothers named New-love listed on the NPM soldiers list. By comparing this image with other negatives in the NPM collection, it was possible to identify the man depicted on this negative as Leslie Mal-colm Newlove.Newlove was born on 18 June, 1895, in Takaka, New Zealand, the son of Mary Ann Newlove. On the Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs L.M. Newlove (wife), Takaka, Nelson, New Zealand. Newlove worked for himself as a farmer before enlisting for service during World War One. He embarked with the 19th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company, on 15 November, 1916, from Welling-
ton, New Zealand, for Plymouth or Devonport, England. He served for almost a year in Western Europe. The last unit he served in was the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. Newlove was recorded as
missing, believed killed in action, on 12 October, 1917, in Ypres, Belgium. He was twenty-two years old. Newlove's memo-rial is located in Tyne Cot Memorial, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West- Vlaanderen, Bel-gium, memorial refer-ence NZ Apse, Panel 2. Leslie Malcolm New-love was the youngest of the three Newlove brothers who fought during World War One.
His brothers were Leonard Charles Newlove and Edwin Newlove. All three brothers were killed within a week, in October 1917.

Get ready for a fantastic evening at Hampden St School this Friday. Their twilight gala is the perfect way to wind down at the end of the week with family, and enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes of a great fundraising event. The very first Hampden St gala was held in 1938 to raise money for the school’s pool, and in the last ten years the event has been an annual occurrence with a reputation for quality atmosphere and entertainment. It’s a fun, family event that has something for everyone, and is sure to attract crowds within the school community, as well as around the region. This year, the twilight gala is helping to raise the funds necessary for their two upcoming projects. The school’s tennis and basketball courts are in need of resurfacing, before being covered with synthetic tiger turf, while an outside area, incorporating trees and benches, will be further developed to accommodate an outdoor teaching
space. The project includes re-modelling the whole garden area and constructing covered spaces for students and teachers to sit under. Amusements for the children will
be very similar to last year, with a bouncy castle, mini jeeps, horizontal bungee, water walkers, face painting and crazy hair all on offer, as well as some exciting new additions like the merry-go-round and nail painting. Nelson Cadets will have an assault course
set up for children to get stuck into, or they could take their energy out on some crockery in the plate smash. Last year also saw a very
popular haunted house, and Hampden St School are happy to say this will be returning with a bit of a twist. If you’re brave enough, take a tour through
the haunted hospital, it’s got all manner of scary things to get your heart racing. There is plenty for adults to do too, with a diverse collection of food stalls, including curries and other international dishes, the traditional sausage sizzle, and fish and chips. The popular plant stall will be operating, alongside some locally-crafted jewellery, Christmas decorations and, of course, the White Elephant. Entertainment is the heart of every gala
and, with some quality acts on the list, the atmosphere is set for a great day. Musical performances from Hampden St students, including the choir, Malamalama and Jump Jam, will be followed by a range of bands from Nelson Intermediate School. Hampden St School gala has always enjoyed great support from the community, and
this year is no different. With so many high-quality clothing items donated to the event, the school is once again offering the opportunity for early birds to get in and grab the best deals from their Pre-loved Fashion Extravaganza. Come and have a look on Wednesday 19, from 2:30 until
6:30pm, in the school hall. The art exhibition will also be returning this year, featuring 45 local artists. Make someone’s Christmas with a unique piece to hang on the wall, and have a look at the some of the talent from Hampden St School students who will also be displaying around 20 works of art. Viewing times for the exhibition have been extended to Saturday, from 11am until 2pm, for those who missed out on Friday or wish to pick up the pieces they bought.
With so much on offer, you’d be crazy to miss it, so keep Friday 21 November, from 5pm until 8pm, free in your diary.

ADVENTURE RACING:Team Seagate of New Zealand won the 2014 Adventure Racing World Championships in Ecuador on Sunday completing a gruelling 700km course, that started high in the Andes and finished on the Pacific coast at the surf-ing resort of Mompiche, in just over 111 hours. The team, led by Nelson's Nathan Fa’avae and also including Sophie Hart, Chris Forne and Stuart Lynch, is now the most successful in ad-venture racing history, Sophie having won two ARWC titles and the others three titles each.
CRICKET: The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 trophy will be in Nelson this Thursday morn-ing, as part of the nationwide ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Trophy Tour. The Trophy Tour will be open to the public at Nelson Col-lege from 7.30am to 11am on Thursday. The event will feature a 72 square metre interactive exhibition on the history of the tournament, cricket skills challenges, giveaways and the chance to get a free photo with the ICC Crick-et World Cup Trophy. Fans can also expect to meet cricketing hero Sir Richard Hadlee, who is acting as Cricket World Cup Ambassador.
CYCLING: Saxton Field will be home to yet another sport after confirmation a $1.6 mil-lion cycling velodrome will be built there. The project will be funded by Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and the Saxton Velo-drome Trust.

The Nelson College for Girls Junior A team are well on track for the South Island Secondary Schools tournament in Invercargill 24-27th of November 2014.The team lead by captain Tali Uia, have competed in three
tournaments in-preparation. The first was a one day tour-nament called “Serve It Up” held at Saxton stadium, where they played 5 games and won 4, losing to Waimea Junior A in the final.The second tournament was the ‘Roy Titheridge” tourna-ment. Held in Blenheim the team played 6 games and won 6 games over a two day week-end. They defeated Marlbor-ough girls college A in the fi-nal, defending the title for the
2nd year in a row and returning the trophy to the NCG trophy case.The girls have just completed the final tournament nar-rowly losing the final to Waimea in a three set nail biter. The tournaments thus far set NCG A up as Tasman 2 for the South Islands, hope-fully this will lead to a favourable draw.Although the team is newly formed this term, with only two players from last years junior A they have gelled well and gone from strength to strength. The team is made up of a talented young bunch of athletes who represent the Nel-son/Tasman region in a number of codes such as hockey, basketball, netball and of course volleyball. Most of the girls have also been playing beach volleyball
on a Tuesday night to help with fitness, speed and agility skills that transfer well to the indoor game. They will also be competing in the South Islands secondary school beach competition also in Invercargill on the 28th of November. The Beach courts will be set up in the stadium providing a novel experience for the girls who often have to battle sun, wind and rain on traditional outdoor courts.The girls are excited for the challenge ahead at the South Island Secondary Schools Volleyball Tournament and want to say a huge “Thank-You” for the support of their sponsors to help them get to Invercargill.

Nelson slotcar drag racers, Chris Narbey and Tony Cook, may have recorded the fastest runs at the national slotcar drag racing champs at the Brightwater track on Saturday, but it was their clubmate Clive Hall who provided the most spectacular action. Tony won the Nitro Class reaching speeds of up to 140 kilometres an hour on the 30m track while Chris took on the Pro-Modifieds at the meeting that attracted 18 racers in seven class-es. Rangiora's Kerry Radford also had a suc-cessful day, winning the Pro-Stock, Box Stock and Hard Body classes to accumulate the most points.But Tony says Clive Hall stole the show when he "destroyed his car when it flew off the end of the track and hit the wall" in the most spectacular crash of the day."He was still picking up the pieces the next day," Tony says. "It was a massive crash."Tony says the slotcars are raced in the same classes to real drag cars depending on their body type, weight and motor. The fastest nitro dragsters can reach speeds of up to 160kmh and cover the 30m track in 0.4seconds."Anything goes in the nitros which is the fastest class. My car does 88,000 revs per minute and up to 100 miles an hour but I was only hitting 85 and 0.5seconds on Saturday."Tony says the Brightwater Slot Racing Club also has a circuit racing track and holds regular meetings on Tuesdays from 7pm. Nelson riders picked up several national titles at the MTF Moto Trials Champs in Motueka last month.The event was hosted by the Nelson Motorcycle Club and saw Nelson’s Peter Oliver win the A-grade section and his father, Stephen Oliver, win the presidents grade, hold-ing off Motueka’s Craig Was-
sell. England’s Jack Sheppard, ranked 13th in the world, won the expert grade. Motueka star rider, Daniel Clark won the intermediate class while his brother Karl Clark finished a very comfortable third in the Pro/ Expert grade after having returned from the World re-nowned Scottish Six Day Trial. Nelson’s Nick Oliver finished
fifth in the expert section.The Nelson Motorcycle Club says it was pleased with the at-tendance with the largest Pro/Expert class for many years. Trial riders pick up NZ titles
Big turn out for judo compMore than 50 people threw each other around a Nel-son judo dojo on Sunday, as part of the Central Dis-tricts closed champion-ships.The champs involved 53 people from Nelson, Mar-lborough and the West Coast. President of the Nelson Judo Club, Lindsay Kelly, says it was thrilled with the turn out."We were blown away. The sport is really growing and Nelson and Motueka both entered big numbers."The event was open to all ages and weight classes from kids through to adults.

Nelson and Tasman members of the New Zea-land Register of Acupuncturists (NZRA) will be joining with practitioners from throughout the country in celebrating World Acupuncture Awareness Week (WAAW). It was decided at the 2013 meeting of the exec-utive of the World Federation of Acupuncture Societies (WFAS) that the week closest to 16 – 22 November would be marked every year as World Acupuncture Awareness Week and this is the first time it has been celebrated here in New Zealand. As in so many things, it would appear that New Zealand is again leading the way by planning a wide variety of events from one end of the country to the other.Whilst acupuncture has an extensive history in countries such as China, Korea and Japan, it is only more recently that it has been widely used in the more Western countries. Acupuncture is well established here in New Zealand, with members of the New Zealand Register of Acu-puncturists, which was founded in 1977, hav-ing been recognised as Treatment Providers by ACC since 1990. Whilst acupuncture can be used to treat many different conditions, this year in New Zealand the focus for WAAW is on the treatment of four main conditions – migraine, lower back pain, depression and period pain. There are increas-ing numbers of robust scientific studies show-ing the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment
on these particular conditions.Members of the New Zealand Register of Acu-puncturists have completed at least four years of full time study either here or overseas and must complete at least 20 hours of continuing education every year in order to maintain their Annual Practicing Certificate. Acupuncture is not yet a registered profession in New Zealand but members of NZRA are bound by the rules and code of ethics of the organisation.Those New Zealanders who studied acupunc-ture in the past would have needed to travel overseas as there was no course of study offered in this country. It is now possible to complete a bachelor and masters programme through the New Zealand School of Acupuncture and TCM in either Wellington or Auckland. Both courses are NZQA approved. A recent study, completed by NZRA member, Dan Jakes as part of his masters thesis through Canterbury University, found that people who were seek acupuncture treatment do so for two main reasons - dissatisfaction with their con-ventional care or as a result of their specific health beliefs which cause them to seek out the more holistic treatment provided by the acu-puncturist. Perhaps it is time to consider acupuncture treatment? There are 11 members of NZRA here in the Nelson Tasman region – why not give one of them a call?
