Seniors Are Uniquely Vulnerable to Health Impacts of Hunger
Kaiser Health NewsLaura Ungar and Trudy Lieberman
“Since malnutrition exacerbates diseases and prevents healing, seniors without steady, nutritious food can wind up in hospitals, which drives up Medicare and Medicaid costs, hitting taxpayers with an even bigger bill. Sometimes seniors relapse quickly after discharge – or worse.”
20
Example:
If 10 frail seniors stop receiving Meals on Wheels and 5 hours a month homemaker service, and they move to a nursing home, the cost of care increases from$3,920 a month for 10 seniorsto $8,040 for one senior.
