Iasi – city of Universities
The first modern university in Romania was built at Iasi in 1860.
The building of the old university is now the University of Medicine and Pharmacy
„Gr. T. Popa”
The first University was founded in 1860 by the ruler Alexandru Ioan
Cuza.
Now, with five public universities, Iasi is one of the
most important university center of the country.

The present building of the University was built between 1893-1897 and the architect Louis Le Blanc made its plans. Inside you can find the Monumental Hall and the “Hall of the Lost Steps”, adorned with frescoes painted by the contemporary artist Sabin Balasa.
