As a film-maker Teresa Grimesproduced documentaries, workedfor Thames TV, and gave us the Five

Women Painters series for Channel 4.Now, as director of Tintype, she is

offering a picture show of a different sort, ascreening of a series of short films back-projected onto the window of hercontemporary art gallery in Islington.

Essex Road III is eight short films byartists Susan Collins, Lynne Marsh, JennetThomas, Amikam Toren, John Walter, AliceMay Williams, Joby Williamson, and AndreaLuka Zimmerman.

Teresa says: “It’s very much to do withEssex Road, the street, which I love beingable to look onto as I’m working. That’s infact how the whole idea started.”

The brief to the artists was to provide afilm of about five minutes “that in someway relates to Essex Road”.

As the title suggests, the project is nowin its third year, and the daily screeningsfor passers-by run on a loop, from duskuntil midnight, and will continue untilJanuary 14.

Tintype was formerly in Clerkenwellbefore moving to its present location threeyears ago. It currently represents 11 artistsand mounts eight exhibitions a year, frompaintings and prints to “sculpturalinstallations”, performance, special eventsand more.

Teresa stresses: “We are a contemporaryart gallery, we are not a cinema”, but whilethe films are running, the gallery itself is indarkness.

She adds: “I’ve had some lovelydialogues with people who, when I’ve just

popped out, are watching the films andjust start chatting.

“There have been quite a few peoplewho have lived in this area a long time, sothey tell me their old stories and vignettes, which is nice.”

The artists have produced very differentworks with wide-ranging subject matter. There’s “a search for wildlife in EssexRoad… from a stuffed rabbit, ornamentalhorses, and deer paintings, to pet dogs and

pigeons”; a juxtaposition of a helicopter’srotating blades and a young man pacing upand down a section of the road swinging akey ring on his finger; themes ofresurrection, entertainment and death, inspired by the Art Deco cinema, once abingo hall; a personal story of love lost onEssex Road “thwarted by the excessivelyefficient 38 bus service”; and the lesspersonal examination of the local shops“…an assortment of independent

businesses that clamour for your glance, your attention and your engagement.”.

As they say, watch this space.Arts Council England and Islington’s

Local Initiatives Fund are supportingTintype with the project.

JOHN EVANSl Essex Road III is at Tintype, 107 EssexRoad, N1 2SL, 020 7354 4360, dusk tomidnight, daily until January 14.www.tintypegallery.com
