. This is my final newsletter to you, the month of my final DCM, and the
month were my term as your Lieutenant Governor comes to an end. Even though it was filled with stressful nights and all-nighters, it was
well worth it. I’m grateful to have met many of you and this opportunity in general. I met amazing people and went to wonderful meetings;
however, all good things must come to an end. This is truly one of the best experiences that I have ever had being in Key Club. I am glad to
have served as Lieutenant Governor for Division 30! .
With that said, not only have I been the one that has worked hard this year but every single one of you has too! From paying your club dues on time to attending DCM’s and [hopefully] DCON! Your hard work has
translated to the Jelly Board, but you all deserve something special! However there can only be one winner and they shall be announced at
the DCM.. so be sure to attend! .
The March Divisional Council meeting will be on March 26th at the Sumner Library Meeting Room. CONVENTION ATTENDEES! Please
be sure to attend the March DCM too! Meet other people going to Convention, make spirit signs, pay for your spirit pack ($10), and have
fun! .
Hope to see you all at the March DCM!! The more people, the more fun with the icebreakers we’ll have. Be on the lookout for April’s newsletter, from our new Lieutenant
Governor Caitlin Turley! .
In Caring Service,
Grace Chon Division 30 Lieutenant Governor

Kiwanis Children’s Cancer
Inspiration: In 1964 PNW Governor Frank Morehouse had the opportunity to work as a Medical
Technologist at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford Oregon, where he met Penny, a
10 year old brain cancer patient. His relationship with Penny and her fatal condition is the
inspiration for this PNW District Program.
Governor Frank is dedicating his Governor’s Program to the memory of Penny to help change
the future for children suffering from cancer, especially brain cancer.
Goal: Support the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program at Doernbecher Children’s
Hospital, Portland, Oregon.
Mike Davis, President KDCCP, [email protected]
Support the Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Fellowship Program at Seattle Children’s Hospital,
Seattle Washington.
Mike La Franchi, President KCCPNW, [email protected]
Support the Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Fellowship Program at British Columbia Children’s
Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia.
Darlene Smith, President KCCPBCY, [email protected] "Fifty years ago, most children with leukemia lived less than one year, and almost none
survived. Now, thanks to advances made at research and teaching hospitals like
Doernbecher, most children with leukemia reach adulthood, cured of their disease." Dr. Linda Stork, MD., Division Head, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital
Participation: Tour the Children’s Cancer Research Hospital in your area.
• Sponsor a fundraiser for the Research Program – Walks, Bike Rides, and Relays.
• Schedule a speaker from any of the Kiwanis Cancer Research Programs.
• Make hats, trauma dolls, and quilts for children going through cancer treatment.
Reward: Gain satisfaction for changing the world one child at a time and making a real
difference in the lives and future of children in each of our communities.
“This PNW Kiwanis Program will continue for as long as there is the need to find cures for children’s
cancer.” Claudell King, PNW Governor Elect 2010-2011.

Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to save the lives of babies and their mothers by eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT), a disease that kills an estimated 60,000 newborns and a significant number of women each year.
MNT is easily prevented by a series of three vaccinations to women of childbearing age, costing roughly US$1.80. The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus will raise US$110 million over the next five years to fill the funding gap required to provide an estimated 387 million doses of the vaccine.
The Eliminate Project will deliver life saving vaccines to the most vulnerable women and children in the world: those in remote and difficult to reach areas; conflict zones; and with little access to healthcare.

Children’s Miracle Network
The Children’s Miracle Network is of one Key Club’s three service partners; the other two being
March of Dimes and UNICEF. Children’s Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization that raises
money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing awareness of its member hospitals. All
Children’s Miracle Network contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-
date equipment, training staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs
and provide health care for children whose parents can’t afford to pay for.
Hospitalized infants & children need special pharmaceuticals and equipment engineered to
work with their small stature. From the tiniest tube or milliliter of medication to ECMO, a
formidable device that acts as an artificial lung outside the body, medicines and machines
that help sick kids get well are specialized - and high priced. Skilled pediatric professionals
armed with evolving treatments and expensive tools work to save more than 14 million
children annually from life-threatening injuries, birth defects, cancer, and numerous other
ailments.
In 2009-10, Key Club and the Kiwanis family raised almost
$1.8 million for Children’s Miracle Network and their
affiliated hospitals. For more than a decade, Key Club
International has been supporting Children’s Miracle
Network by sponsoring fundraisers and participating in
service projects involving Children’s Miracle Network
hospitals.
