SAT Practice Math Question
A special lottery is to be held to select the student who will live in the only deluxe room in a dormitory. There are seniors, juniors, and sophomores who applied. Each senior's name is placed in the lottery times; each junior's name, times; and each sophomore's name, time. What is the probability that a senior's name will be chosen?A. 1/8 B. 2/9C. 2/7D. 3/8E. 1/2
Answer: D• To determine the probability that a senior's name will be
chosen, you must determine the total number of seniors' names that are in the lottery and divide this number by the total number of names in the lottery. Since each senior's name is placed in the lottery times, there are seniors' names. Likewise, there are juniors' names and sophomores' names in the lottery. The probability that a senior's name will be chosen is .
SAT• The projected sales volume of a video game cartridge is given
by the function where is the number of cartridges sold, in thousands; is the price per cartridge, in dollars; and is a constant. If according to the projections, cartridges are sold at per cartridge, how many cartridges will be sold at per cartridge
• A. 20,000• B. 50,000• C. 60,000• D. 150,000• E. 200,000
Answer: C
SAT• Because King Philip's desire to make Spain the dominant
power in sixteenth-century Europe ran counter to Queen Elizabeth's insistence on autonomy for England, ------- was -------.
• A. reconciliation . . Assured• B. warfare . . Avoidable• C. ruination . . Impossible• D. conflict . . Inevitable• E. diplomacy . . simple
Answer: D• The word "because" indicates that the information in the first
part of the sentence (the part before the comma) explains the reason for the situation described in the second part. The first part states that what King Philip wanted (domination for Spain) "ran counter to" what Queen Elizabeth wanted (independence for England). Choice (D) logically completes the sentence: Given that there was such a fundamental disagreement between the two monarchs, "conflict" would likely be "inevitable," or unavoidable
ACT Math questions • A car averages 27 miles per gallon. If gas costs $4.04 per gallon,
which of the following is closest to how much the gas would cost for this car to travel 2,727 typical miles? • A. $ 44.44• B. $109.08• C. $118.80• D. $408.04• E. $444.40
• When x = 3 and y = 5, by how much does the value of 3x2 – 2y exceed the value of 2x2 – 3y ? • A. 4• B. 14• C. 16• D. 20• E. 50
ACT Math answers
• A car averages 27 miles per gallon. If gas costs $4.04 per gallon, which of the following is closest to how much the gas would cost for this car to travel 2,727 typical miles? • Answer- D• If you divide 2,727 miles by 27 miles per gallon you will get the
number of gallons: = 101. Then, multiply the number of gallons by the cost per gallon: 101(4.04) = 408.04. This gives the cost of gas for this car to travel 2,727 typical miles.
• When x = 3 and y = 5, by how much does the value of 3x2 – 2y exceed the value of 2x2 – 3y ? • Answer B• When you use x = 3 and y = 5 in the given expressions, 3x2 – 2y =
3(3)2 – 2(5) = 27 – 10 = 17 and 2x2 – 3y = 2(3)2 – 3(5) = 18 – 15 = 3. Then subtract 3 from 17 to get 14.
ACT Science Questions• Scientist 2• No deep, liquid water ocean exists on Europa. The heat
generated by gravitational tides is quickly lost to space because of Europa's small size, as shown by its very low surface temperature (–160°C). Many of the features on Europa's surface resemble features created by flowing glaciers on Earth. Large amounts of liquid water are not required for the creation of these features. If a thin layer of ice below the surface is much warmer than the surface ice, it may be able to flow and cause cracking and movement of the surface ice. Few meteorite craters are observed because of Europa's very thin atmosphere; surface ice continually sublimes (changes from solid to gas) into this atmosphere, quickly eroding and removing any craters that may have formed.
ACT Science Questions• Scientist 2 explains that ice sublimes to water vapor and
enters Europa's atmosphere. If ultraviolet light then broke those water vapor molecules apart, which of the following gases would one most likely expect to find in Europa's atmosphere as a result of this process? • A. Nitrogen• B. Methane• C. Chlorine• D. Oxygen
ACT Science Answers• Answer: D• Water vapor molecules are composed of hydrogen and
oxygen. The breakdown of these molecules would lead to the production of oxygen (O2) in the atmosphere.
ACT Reading Example• Passage I• PROSE FICTION: This passage is adapted from the novel The Men of Brewster Place by
Gloria Naylor (©1998 by Gloria Naylor).• Clifford Jackson, or Abshu, as he preferred to be
known in the streets, had committed himself severalyears ago to use his talents as a playwright to broadenthe horizons for the young, gifted, and black—which 5 was how he saw every child milling around that darkstreet. As head of the community center he went afterevery existing grant on the city and state level to bringthem puppet shows with the message to avoid drugsand stay in school; and plays in the park such as actors 10 rapping their way through Shakespeare's A MidsummerNight's Dream. Abshu believed there was something inShakespeare for everyone, even the young of BrewsterPlace, and if he broadened their horizons just a littlebit, there might be enough room for some of them to 15slip through and see what the world had waiting. No, itwould not be a perfect world, but definitely one withmore room than they had now.
Reading Example• The point of view from which the passage is told can best be described as that of:
• A. a man looking back on the best years of his life as director of a community center in a strife-ridden neighborhood.
• B. a narrator describing his experiences as they happen, starting with childhood and continuing through his adult years as an advocate for troubled children.
• C. an unidentified narrator describing a man who devoted his life to neighborhood children years after his own difficult childhood.
• D. an admiring relative of a man whose generosity with children was widely respected in the neighborhood where he turned around a declining community center.
• It can reasonably be inferred from the passage that which of the following is a cherished dream that Abshu expects to make a reality in his lifetime? • F. Establishing himself financially so as to be able to bring his original family back under
one roof• G. Seeing the children at the community center shift their interest from sports to the
dramatic arts• H. Building on the success of the community center by opening other centers like it
throughout the state• J. Expanding for some, if not all, of the children the vision they have of themselves and
their futures
