What To Do With Old Lodge Secretary Books

We recently had a lodge secretary ask what she could do with some old lodge secretary books that she had inherited through her lodge and another that had merged.

was contacted to see if their library could preserve any of the old records. His response was: “Yes, we’d be pleased to add them to our collection. Feel free to have the lodge leadership contact me if there are any questions or concerns. Also, you can let them know that they can access them whenever they want – all they have to do is ask.” If you have books, photos, or old secretary minutes that you would like to see preserved, please contact Dave at: 1-319-362-8500, x202 or e-mail: [email protected] to discuss what you have prior to sending any materials.

A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDDear Brothers and Sisters,

Last month our President, Howard Wolfe, sent me a letter notifying me that he is going to retire effective July 1, 2013. When I received Brother Wolfe’s letter, I immediately informed the Board of Directors of his decision.

The Board of Directors has started the process of searching for a qualified candidate for this position. This is a very important decision to make for the future of wfla and we will look outside of the Association as well as within for a qualified candidate. We anticipate that the new acting president will be hired before July 1, 2013 and will then have at least two years to

lead the Association and prove their leadership skills to the members. We intend for this individual to be the nominee presented by the Board of Directors at the Convention in July 2015, and elected to serve by our members.

I just want to conclude with saying that for the past 44 years Brother Wolfe has always been very dedicated to his job and the Association. We have been very fortunate to have had him here at wfla but as he has told many of us, family comes first, and we all have to make decisions in our lives that puts family first. We understand and respect his decision to spend more time with his wife Judy and his grandchildren and we wish him the very best.

Thank you Jim for your years of service to the Association. You should be very proud, as we all are, of wfla’s success in being financially sound and ability to help our members and our communities in so many ways.

Fraternally,

Duane J. JirikChairman of the Board

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTRecently I notified Chairman of the Board, Duane Jirik, that I felt it was time for me to retire and I plan to do so July 1, 2013.

I picked this date to allow the Board ample time to find a qualified candidate. It is important for the members of wfla to have the opportunity to meet and get to know the person who the Board plans to nominate for president before the next National Convention. I am confident the Board will select a person with the necessary leadership and management skills to guide the Association into the future. The new acting President will have two years to lead the Association prior to the Convention.

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the Association for over 44 years. I appreciate the confidence that the Board of Directors placed in me by allowing me to serve as president and have been blessed with having an excellent management team, staff, agents, and wfla members who have supported me for many years.

I’ve enjoyed my tenure with the Association and I will miss the contact with the board, the management team, the staff, agents and most of all, the members of the Association.

I look forward to the time when my wife Judy and I can travel and spend time with our grandchildren. We both want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the friendship and the fraternalism that you’ve shown both of us throughout the years.

Fraternally yours,

Howard J. WolfePresident

Just one At the Home Office, we call them “spark plugs.” The people who get things done, motivate others, and come up with new ideas. The spark plugs are the folks we turn to help us spread the word about changes and lead new programs. These people are the backbone of any volunteer organization. They are also the people that happen to take many tasks on from the lodge and can be over-worked, leading to burnout. If you are one of these spark plugs, thank you! We could never do our fraternal duties without you. Of course we always appreciate the people who are not comfortable being spark plugs, but who volunteer

continually and help wherever needed. Every person has a place in the lodge and every type of personality is needed. That is why, in our lodges, we encourage everyone to share ideas about activities. It only takes one good idea to influence the lodge, and only one small voice to teach the world a song. It only takes one small voice to lead the pack, and even spark plugs need new ideas. If you want some help with starting a new activity, I would be glad to be the one, small voice.

Family Affairs Among the many characteristics that make wfla different from other organiza-tions is that we are truly a family organi-

zation. It is rare that people of any age, let alone families, can come together to be a part of the same meeting or association. We are able to bridge the gaps between generations, believing that serving others should “run in the family.” We strive to bring families closer together through activities, and we highly encour-age our active members to bring their families to events, meet-ings, and activities. The lodges have always been open to the whole family, but now they are even more inclusive. Not only do the lodges accommodate all ages, but also there are new ways to include families through the YELL! groups. Parents are encouraged to become youth liaisons that oversee the groups while young family members and their friends are welcome to join or create a YELL! group. WFLA has a rich history of generations of families coming together for their communities, let us continue that wonderful tradition.

YOUTH IN THE NEWS Member Mary Bjorklund of Lodge No. 44, Hayward, MN recently traveled to Laramie, WY on a 20 day/night backpacking/rock climbing trip with the group "Solid Rock Outdoor Ministries." Mary is a senior at Northwood/Kensett High School and takes part in school activities like cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, and track and field. She is a member of the Student Council and National Honor Society. Mary also helps our lodge by working at our pancake breakfasts.

Member Ellie Haeska of Lodge No. 38, Austin, MN participted in the You Can't Stop the Beat performance put on by the Goodhue County 4-H Arts program. For a week in July, 44 members practiced in preparation for the Goodhue County Fair. The participants shared their dancing and singing talents with fair goers from August 7-12. The finale was the end of August when they performed at the MN State Fair. Minnesota 4-H is the state's largest out-of-school youth educational program.

The Bohemian Hall Amateur Theatre returned for a fourth year to the lodge stage with the play Mystery in Red. The audience had to pay attention as the play flipped from the cast reading a mystery to actually acting out the characters in that story. Please read Wisconsin Lodge 141's article for the full story.

"Making The Most of Our Modest Legacy"

Leaving an inheritance is important to most people. Even for those of us who haven’t accumulated great wealth, we prob-ably would like to leave something earmarked for our children or our grandchildren’s education. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics publication Inheritances and the Distribution of Wealth, the typical inheri-tance is received when the beneficiary is in his or her 50’s, a time when earning potential and income is usually at its peak. For those who intend to leave IRAs or tax-deferred annuities to children or grandchildren, the value of the account will be reduced by income taxes and is amplified when the beneficiaries are in a high income tax bracket. Since beneficiaries of retirement accounts pay income tax on the distribution, they will likely end up with less than if Mom or Dad had taken the distribution at their lower tax bracket. Repositioning the asset provides a more favorable tax treatment and increases the overall amount left to the beneficiaries. The vehicle most commonly used to reposition the tax treatment is life insurance. Shortened-pay life insurance contracts and single premium life insurance contracts are ideal for the client who has sufficient income to live on and views their retirement assets as something they likely do not need. Since life insurance is involved, the client will need to be healthy and willing to go through the life insurance underwrit-ing process. Here is a quick look at how this might work. Mary, age 71, widowed a few years ago, is a healthy non-smoker with an

IRA balance of $150,000. She has sufficient income from her pension and social security and does not need the required minimum distribution (RMD) amount she must take from her IRA annually. Mary understands that her children will have to pay income tax on the IRA account when they inherit it. She can take approximately $15,000 from her IRA this year and still stay in the 15% federal income tax rate. Her children are successful and pay income taxes currently at a 28% tax rate. Mary will purchase a life insurance contract, with a $50,000 death benefit, by using the RMD each year for the next 7 years. Following the 7 years of payments, she will have a paid up contract with a $50,000 guaranteed death benefit. Alternatively, Mary could take $15,000 from her IRA this year, pay the taxes, and purchase a single premium life insurance contract with a $25,000 death benefit. Thirdly, she could take $32,000 from her IRA, pay the taxes at her tax rate, and purchase a single premium life insurance contract with a $50,000 death benefit. In all cases, she has greatly increased the value of the tax-free inheritance. Any of the three solutions offers a win-win situation for Mary and her children. Mary pays the income taxes up-front and her children inherit a tax-free death benefit. If you have an IRA or tax-deferred annuity, talk to your Western Fraternal Life agent about maximizing your children’s inheritance by minimizing income taxes.

WFLA is pleased to spotlight fellow member and Agent Daniel Zeiger for going above and beyond. Dan Zeiger started as an agent for wfla in July of 2010, and in January 2011 became the Regional Manager of Michigan. During the year of 2011, Dan Zeiger and his agents were very successful bringing in 207 new members. So far this year, Dan Zeiger and his agents are leading the field with 189 new members.

We would like to not only congratulate Dan on his successes with wfla in gaining membership, but also for going "to the moon and back" in his community. Recently, Dan took part in a golf outing in his area. Dan, along with the Home Office, donated goody bags filled with pens, pencils, flashlights, golf balls, golf tees, and band aid dispensers.

For all of his help, Dan was recognized with an award that states “Dan Zeiger, you’ve gone to the moon and back for us. Thank you!” United Auto Workers (UAW).

Thank you Dan for all that you have done for wfla and the community.

FIRE DESTROYS FORMER LODGE HALL IN FORT DODGE, IA On Friday, August 14, the historic Bohemian Hall was to-tally engulfed in flames and was almost totally destroyed. Only a small section of the basement was untouched by flames. The outer brick walls and the steel roof beams remained standing with the interior in ashes. Lodge Fort Dodge No. 39, who had built the structure in 1939, had sold the building in 2006 to an individual. The lodge held meetings there until two years ago. The dances, which began in 1939, ended in October 2011 and the owner was going to remodel the structure. The structure was a split level with a bar, kitchen, tables, and restrooms on the lower level. The large wooden dance floor and stage were on the upper level. The building was used as a voting site, for wedding receptions, dances, anniversaries, 4-H meetings, and numerous other community activities. There

Our lodge was chartered as Lodge Hradcany on April 20, 1907 in Hopkins, MN (8 miles west of Minneapolis and St. Paul). Hopkins, and the surrounding areas, were heavily oc-cupied by Czech settlers; with the first Czech family dating to 1855. The first Czech Club originated in 1898 with a hall and library in the Hopkins area. The charter members of our lodge included Otillie Viska, Tillie Ciskovsky, Marie Dvorak, Mable Hemza, Anna Kuchera, Karolina Neubauer (first Financial Secretary), Marie Urba, Joseph Empanger (first Treasurer),

We had two large influxes of members from mergers; one Lodge F.E. Zdrubek in 1905 and another from wfla Lodge Oriole No. 302 in 1946. Lodge No. 11 was a Czech speaking lodge, and Oriole used the English language. When the two joined, we decided to all use the English language, and we changed our name to Lodge Hopkins No. 11. When the lodge first organized, they owned a building in Glen Lake, which later burnt down. For many years until 1986, the group met on the second floor of the I.O.O.F. building in downtown Hopkins. The rent was high and there were long steps to climb. Today, the group meets at the Dow Towers party room, which is on the first floor and more accessible.

The small group took Ambassador Gandalovic to Phillips Plating, where a tour was given by President of the Company, William “Bill” Baratka. Other sites were viewed by the Ambassador and included the Phillips Golf Course and Cranberry Lake Corporation. A coffee stop at Moravek Manor allowed the Ambassador to visit with members of the Moravek family, William and Vernette Moravek, Chairman of the Phillips Czechoslovakian Community Festival and Director of the Miss Czech Slovak WI State Queen Pageant, respectively. A special tour was given at the United Pride Dairy Farm, where the Ambassador was met by members of the Pesko and Jasurda families. As a former Minister of Agriculture of the Czech Republic, Ambassador Gandalovic found the visit most interesting. After a day packed with sight-seeing, the Ambassador’s observations were summed up by saying that the local citizenry surely must have a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit to have such a diversified economic base. He also remarked on the natural beauty of the area and expressed hope to return sometime in the future with his wife to vacation in the area before leaving his post in Washington, DC. An informal social gathering was hosted by Karl and Marguerite Moravek at their home on Friday evening, after the Lidice Memorial Service and dedication ceremony. While in Phillips, Ambassador Gandalovic was a guest at the Phillips Tourist House and hosted by Toni Brendel, Coordinator of the Lidice Memorial Service, 2012, who made all of the arrangements for the Ambassador’s visit.

SOKOL PARK FLAG STAFF PROJECT COMPLETE A project long dreamed of reached fruition last weekend when three new flagpoles were dedicated at the site of the Lidice Monument, in Sokol Park, Phillips. The Reverend Thomas E. Reiff opened the ceremony with a word of prayer and This is My Song was performed by Joan Magnuson and Mark Pirinski. Sally Teresinski, President of the WI Czechs, raised the American Flag, and the American National Anthem was sung by Kyle Schleife. Czech Ambassador Petr Gandalovic raised the Czech flag with the Czech National Anthem being sung by Robert Heinze, of Haugen, WI. Donald Pafko, Honorary Slovak Consul of MN raised the Slovak flag, and Mr. Heinze offered his talents once again to sing the Slovak National Anthem. Flag raising assistants were members of the VFW and American Legion Honor Guard, Charles Johnson, Steve Janacek, and Donald Flietner. Pastor Reiff dedicated the flagpoles with a brief dedication ceremony. The program was concluded with a vocal duet by Ms. Magnuson and Mr. Pirinski, How Great Thou Art, with guitar accompaniment provided by Mr. Pirinski.

CZECH AMBASSADOR VISITS PHILLIPS, WISubmitted by Toni Brendel

During the Lidice Memorial Service on Friday evening, June 15, Czech Ambassador Petr Gandalovic was welcomed by Honorable Mayor, Charles Peterson. Mayor Peterson presented Ambassador Gandalovic with a key to the City of Phillips. Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the destruction of Lidice and Lezaky, Czechoslovakia, Guest Speaker Gandalovic emphasized the fact that German Nazi, Reinhardt Heydrich, whose assassination precipitated the destruction of the two Bohemian villages, and the murder of many of their inhabit-ants, including 88 of 105 Lidice children, was indeed the author of the Final Solution. His assassination served to eliminate thousands upon thousands more deaths during WWII. Many dignitaries from Czech and Slovak organizations in the Midwest were present to take part in the service. They included President of the WI Czechs, Sally Teresinski of Green Bay, WI; President of the WI Slovak Historical Society, Tony Jurik, Waukesha, WI; President of Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International, Ginger Simek, Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Founder of the Miss Czech Slovak US National Pageant, John Fiala, Lincoln, NE; and Honorary Slovak Consul, Donald Pafko, Bloomington, MN. Jason Wright, representing the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, Cedar Rapids, IA, was unable to attend. Susan Thums, Rib Lake, WI presented a narrative, Lidice – A Tragedy of War, written by Toni Brendel. Vocalists for the evening program included Robert Heinze, Haugen, WI; Joan Magnuson, Ogema, WI; and Mark Pirinski, Rib Lake, WI, as well as local talents, Kyle Schleife, and the Angelo Family Singers. Luanne Angelo, pianist and musical director, coordi-nated the music for the event. Ambassador Gandalovic arrived in Phillips at midnight Thursday and departed on Saturday morning to return to Washington, DC, but while in Phillips, the best use of time was spent. Karl Moravek acted as tour guide, with his daughter, Beth Tomczak assisting, and Moravek’s house guest, Dagmar Hofkervo of Slovakia, accompanied them.

Stan Saylor put in an appearance on August 12 for a dance. Thank you to Stan. We had several members who died this summer. Our condolences and sympathy go out to the following families: Marie Borsenik, Dorothy Schaffer, Mildred Simpson, Vlasta Loynes, Betty Fairchild (who was a cook at the lodge for many years), and Jo Whiting (also a cook at the lodge up to the present). A special thank you goes to Marie Prikasky, our kitchen manager since 1960. Once an event is planned, she and her assistant, along with a number of cooks, have worked three to four hours on a Friday, and up to 10-12 hours on a Saturday to get a meal ready for any given event. We appreciate their dedication to the lodge. A big thank you one and all. On September 2, Stan Saylor and his band came to perform

The food was exceptional, so try to attend next year, and you will not be disappointed. We had a wonderful discussion in reference to helping our community. Some of the suggestions were: being a school mentor, helping the homeless, the Habitat for Humanity Program that builds homes, VA Hospital, and nursing homes. Craig Van Dyke was the first to visit with us. He said the 2015 Convention will be in Cedar Rapids. He is on the Board of Directors of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. The grand re-opening was held on July 14. When we come to the Convention we must stop and see the museum. He said it is hard making money during this trying time but thanks to our great agents, we are. He thanked the 50 and 75-year members for their attendance, and also thanked Louie for his 12 years as director. Youth Activities Director Kelsey Logan took a few minutes to visit and tell us her goals for moving the lodges forward. She assured us she will be working with not just 18 and under but also 20, 30, and 40-year olds. Bonita Fillmore was next to talk and said this has been a year of learning for her. She said Czech people are hardwork-ing and conservative. She is glad to meet with us out here. We would like the general public to know about our community service projects. Jo Haffield gave the scholarship report. Two lodges gave donations, and there were two personal donations and six lodge memorials. We had enough to pay the scholarships. She told us to go home and sell the idea to make something for the scholarship fund. Jim Neuhardt just wanted to add that the scholarship donations are tax deductible. It is important to the young people of South Dakota. Holly Pechota said that it is hard to write life insurance for children, but the scholarship is good for them. Lodges donated bicycles; held paper and aluminum can drives, and hosted parties for their communities. They mowed lawns, planted flowers, and trees for JOIN HANDS DAY in their communities. Lodge Bratri Novych Hradu No. 141, Cadott, WI Cade Sikora, Correspondent A potluck picnic was followed by the lodge meeting at Riverview Park on August 16. Gene and Marlene Moucha and JoAnn Parks were selected as delegates to the WI/Upper MI State Meeting in October. Author and Historical Researcher Lorelei Mustas was in the Cadott area conducting research on historical buildings in WI that still serve their original purpose for a book titled History Lives. On August 31, she met with local lodge members to get a firsthand perspective of the history, renovation, and current use of the old ZCBJ Bohemian Hall lodge building. Mustas hopes to finish the book History Lives over the winter and plans to release it in the spring of 2013. The Bohemian Hall Amateur Theatre returned for a fourth year to the lodge stage. The audience had to pay attention as the play flipped from the cast reading a mystery to actually acting out the characters in that story. Lodge Director Kitty Chadima, from the Home Office, called the play “delight-fully funny, a delightful blend of stories.”

The cast of A Mystery in Red (l-r): Cade Sikora, Kylie Bell, Tyrel Danielson, Kayla Dunlap, Carl Scheidler, Saige Sikora, Brett Bowe, Kelsey Danielson, and Nathan Plass.

The play started with the cast cleaning out a deceased relative’s house with help from neighbors and friends only to find themselves distracted by a novel their friend Gwyneth was writing. They soon became so engrossed in the mystery that they became the characters. The plot of the story is summarized as follows: In the 1950’s-era novel, two alleged communists, Dmitry and Jasmine (Nate Plass and Kelsey Danielson) are attempting to steal a painting for “Mother Russia.” To their dismay, Mr. Lawrence (Cade Sikora) from the art gallery had invited guests, including FBI agent Tom (Carl Scheidler), Southern Belle Charlotte (Kayla Dunlap), a suspicious man named Randal Hensley III (Tyrel Danielson), and Miss Fortune (Kylie Bell), a world-renowned psychic to the event. A matchmaker named Mrs. Smothers (Saige Sikora) welcomes herself in and begins matching the guests with each other, including herself to the butler, Hodges (Brett Bowe). Hilarity ensues when Gwyn’s friends begin to write the story for themselves, and soon Gwyn’s story makes no sense. Charlotte and Jasmine begin to chase Tom, Tom and Miss Fortune are trying to chase “the Reds” Dmitry and Jasmine, while Randal tries desperately to become “the real villain,” hoping to steal the painting for himself. Before anyone knows what is really up, the painting actually does go missing and no one is sure exactly who stole it. The play ended as Officer Spence Reynolds (Quinn Sikora) attempts to arrest the art thief.

Lorelei Mustas and Cade Sikora at Bohemian Hall.

The play contained every element of the 1950’s one could imagine: All-Americans, the Red Scare, fifties slang, era-appropriate costumes, and even a fifties polka played live onstage by the actors. Technical Director Jared Johnson added amazing special effects that were incorporated in the play. The Bohemian Hall Amateur Theatre would like to thank Lodge Director Kitty Chadima and State Director Brenda Osterman for making the trek to visit and see the show. Our lodge will participate in the University of WI-Eau Claire International Festival on November 4. Our next meeting will be December 6 at the Cadott Color Center. Our lodge has moved to a new website! State Director Brenda Osterman has started a website for WI/Upper MI lodges and our lodge has a page on that site. Check it out at www.wiuplodges.com. A pause in what’s to be,A resting place along the road,

To sweet eternity.

We all have different journeys,Different paths along the way,

We all were meant to learn some things,But never meant to stay.

Our destination is a placeFar greater than we know,

For some the journey’s quickerFor some the journey’s slow.

And when the journey finally endsWe’ll claim the great reward, And find an everlasting peace,

Together with the Lord.

Lodge Became Date of Name Place of Death No. Member Death

CLAIMS FOR AUGUST 2012 Renewing a Piece of History Jan Rosicky is generally considered the founder of our Association. He came to America in 1861 from Humpolec, Bohemia, where he was born December 17, 1845. He was well known in Czech-American circles in Omaha and the middle western states. It was he who took the leading role in the battle for insurance reform in the older. C.S.P.S. Society from which our charter lodges split. He was president of the National Printing Company, publisher, and editor of Osveta Americka and Hospodar.

In addition to his distinctive role as founder, he was the first editor of the Fraternal Herald (Bratrsky Vestnik). The first issue was printed in January, 1898 entirely in the Czech language. He continued as editor until his death in April 1910. The Omaha lodges, including Lodge Palacky No. 1, of which he was president, erected a fine stone monument to him at the Bohemian National Cemetery in Omaha, NE. The monument was unveiled during the National Convention of 1912 held in Omaha. In 2007, Director Larry Vilda visited the grave site and saw the sad shape the burial plot plants had become and decided it would be one of his retirement projects. Larry, with his wife JoAnn and friend Lemonte Burns, got permission to remove the old plantings, add new perennial flowers, and mulch to beautify the spot once again. The Home Office assisted by purchasing the plants.
