Very Important issues 2011 :
-operational Dual Polar (all) and start accumulation of data for scientific analysis (APS/GLORY mission),
(we have calibration system and method (lab ou vicarious), inv. Method, need data)
- vicarious (Luc, Zhengqiang, Alberto) - slides
- transfer/check of Sky calibration (travelling master)
- Synergy between lidar/sunphotometer (existing archive and new instrumentation/algorithm) and tools for validation (PLASMA)
- Specific to LOA : creation of National Observation System : ORAURE (D. Tanré), will include aerosol data from sunphotometer (PHOTONS), lidar (all types) and in situ at national level.
- European level (ACTRIS, G. Pappalardo, P. Laj) - european version of ORAURE (AERONET-EUROPE calibration system + Lidar activities)

The main objectives of ACTRIS are:
・ To provide long-term observational data relevant to climate and air quality research on the regional scale produced with standardized or comparable procedures throughout the network;
・ To provide a coordinated framework to support Trans-National Access (TNA) to large infrastructures strengthening high-quality collaboration in and outside the EU and access to high-quality information and services for the user communities (research, Environmental protection agencies, etc.);
・ To develop new integration tools to fully exploit the use of multiple atmospheric techniques at ground-based stations
・ To enhance training of new scientists and new users in particular students, young scientists, and scientists from eastern European and non-EU developing countries in the field of atmospheric observation.
・ To promote development of new technologies for atmospheric observation of aerosols, clouds and trace gases through close partnership with EU SMEs.
A key for ACTRIS success is to build a new research infrastructure on the basis of a consortium joining existing networks/observatories that are already providing consistent datasets of observations (EUSAAR (European Supersites for Atmospheric Aerosol Research) and EARLINET (European Aerosol Research Lidar Network), CLOUDNET, …
LOA/PHOTONS/AERONET will be supported by ACTRIS
ACTRIS
Aerosols, Clouds and Trace gases Research InfraStructure network (accepted, will start end May 2011)
European FP 7 project
(Coordinated by Italy and France)

PHOTONS/LOA contributions to ACTRIS
(1) LILLE/LOA/PHOTONS : Super site for Aerosol Research
(2) PHOTONS : will offer TNA (pilot the EUROPEAN AERONET calibration facility)
Upgrading the AERONET EU capacity « AERONET-EUROPE » TNA is offering to the whole scientific community the use of a unique sun photometer calibration facility currently operational in the frame of PHOTONS/AERONET
This facility operates thanks to an alliance among complementary European laboratories: CNRS-LOA, GOA-UVA and Izana Atmospheric Research Centre (CIAI).
PHOTONS provides unique offer for expertize with multiwavelength polarimeter (instrumentation, calibration and data processing)
12
PHOTONS+RIMA will provides access to this TNA =
Provide calibration and basic maintenance to european AERONET sites PI
Europe is provided support for addditionnal manpower but not for equipement. National supports must be found for equipement.
13

Past to Present
1990-2000 : AERONET (Aerosol Robotic NETwork) Federation is developing thanks to GSFC / LOA and CIMEL
Few ground-based sunphotometer provided AOD and rough access to particle size distribution.
France and Africa were native places/locations for PHOTONS network
2000-2010 : thanks to increasing cooperation, the network expanding (GSFC and LOA), aerosols retrievals improved and new information/parameters available
New members came into the federation (Spain, Canada and Australia)
Instrumentation improving in many directions and automatic multiwavelength polarized sunphotometer is now starting operating
Since the beginning of AERONET two CIMEL sunphotometer versions (standard and polarized) were set up in the network, but for a long time polarisation information was not at all a priority

Recall PHOTONS (sites, locations, polarisation, calibration, vicarious)
Strong link with Spain that will be reconized and officialized through ACTRIS project (….)
