SUMMARY

IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOUR COMPANY COMMENCE CONSTRUCTING ACCESS TO THE PRO- PERTY IN THE WAY DESCRIBED, AND THAT TENDERS FOR THE BUILDING CONTRACTS BE RECEIVED, RE-APPLICATION BE MADE FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MINES, AND CONSTRUCTION BE COMMENCED WHILE WEATHER CONDITIONS PERMIT.

INTRODUCTION

The writer visi ted the Mountain Boy property near Stewart

accompanied by R . Schumacher, A r t Liening, and Nick Benkovich on October 22, 1980.

During the s tay on the property several aspects were

dealt with, and should come to your immediate attention

in view of the start of winter conditions.

MANAGEMENT

I suggest tha t you commission a responsible person to manage your operations a t Stewart. There appears to

exist a sui table work force i n Stewart, especially when some of the field operations shut down for winter, but czs-

ponsible management is necessary.

ROAD ACCESS

Exploration in the American creek a rea would be grea t ly aided by having the old t r a i l up-graded into a good ac- cess road. The- suggestion is t h a t the existing application for f inancial support in re-building the government road,

be revitalized in the following manner. An engineering layout of the proposed a ) bridge relocation and construc-

tion, b) re-decking of the second br idge, c ) fi l l ing a swampy stretch with existing material , d ) f i l l ing fines

between coarse sl ide boulders in cer ta in a reas (front end loader ) , e ) emplacing some culverts, f ) mostly wihin

the grave l bed of the val ley, f i rs t ly on the west s ide, and then higher up the creek on the eas t side, -should be 'prepared. This application and proposal should be co-signed by a s many of the claim owners within that

water shed as possible.

Once the application is in the hands of the Senior Inspec-

tor, i n charge of roads, he may contact the Forest Ser- vice to obtain a Free-Use-Permit for the timber necessary

to construct the bridge, and to remove to build the road.

I t may be useful for the engineer-in-charge to contact

M r . Phil Olson prior to the preparation of the application

a s he may be able to describe the optimal path to follow.

I recommend to build road a s far a s the Pride Resources

property reaches up the valley.

MAIN CAMP

Once the access has been constructed a camp site could be established below the Mountain Boy workings, in an a rea where there is less liklihood of winter sl ides, as

shown by the existing stand of timber. This would serve a s base of operations during the field season, when

personnel could either hike up to the workings, prospect

the lower reaches of the claims,. or be airl if ted to fly-

camps, or day t r ips in the higher areas. This would reduce the weather dependency which does cur ta i l the

scope of airlifted exploration at present.

EXPLORATION OF WORKINGS

Although several workings have been located, there a re

several which have not a s yet been pin-pointed. A t present metal prices there may be extractable ore, which could be mined. A l l the workings should be rehabilitated

and sampled. Access to the workings is fa i r ly easy for mountain-safe personnel, however equipment can hardly be airl if ted

to any of them. In view of t h i s it is adviseable to t ry

to construct access to within a short distance of the MANN workings. .,Ideally th i s would consist of a switch-back

road criss-crossing the slide. This would be probably

seasonal, however. The other possibil i ty is to locate

a smooth t rack up the sl ide, and winch over a block,

to pul l supplies up on a s le igh, or wagon. The other

possibil i ty is to suspend a cable on which a bucket would

be raised and lowered. These suggestions a r e meant to allow access for exploration, and s m a l l scale removal

of high grade bulk samples. Later on fan dr i l l ing from

under-ground may result in the finding of targets worth

mining on a la rger scale. At t h a t time i t may be feasible to dr ive an ad i t , possibly inclined, from the valley floor;

th i s would circumvent the present weather-based concerns.

EXPLORATION OF PROPERTY

The a rea worthy of prospecting is la rge , and mountainous. Ice fields exist on most of the mountains. Yet the possi-

bi l i t ies of finding showings of modern-day interest a r e great . Exploration of the lower levels could commence

once the access and base camp a r e established. Geochemi- c a l techniques should work i n testing s l ides , streams, and soil for precious-metal, and trace-element content. Closely spaced geochemical exploration, together with prospecting, with airphoto control, should work well in

the upper levels during the field season. Once camp is established, work could s t a r t ear ly in the

field season .

DESCRIPTION OF

1980 FIELD

INVESKKTIONS

6

Soon af ter financing w a s obtained, two helicopter f ly camps were established on the property. An average of three prospectors were employed to run base l ines a t 320 azimuth along the general contour of the western aspect of American creek valley. Grid l ines where pos- sible were to be emplaced up and down the precipitous slopes. The prospectors inspected outcrop, as well a s slide rock for signs of mineralization.

RESULTS OF

PROGRAM

The lower camp is a t 823 m (2700 f t ) ASL. I t l ies on the baseline and plots i n the vicinity of the intersection of the southern boundary of Lot 4963 with the northern boundary of Lot 445. The line was not extended beyond the southern a r m of Big Gulch creek, to the north, due to precipitous conditions. To the south similar ccnditions exist. ,

I Samples 8801, 8802, 8803, 8805, 8806, 8807 were taken from a general ly mineralized a rea to the south of this camp. Sample 8818 was taken from the vicini ty of the southern a r m of Big Gulch creek. A l l samples indicated the presence of mineralization; suggesting t h a t th i s gen- e ra l a rea should be covered once aga in , possibly with a program of soil and s i l t sampling to fur ther delineate a reas of interest .

The upper camp is a t 1052 m (3450 f t ) ASL. I t l ies on the other baseline, and plots near the northern end of an odd-shaped fraction Lot 4961. This camp l ies a t the base of, a n d between two major sl ide a r e a s the southern of which feeds the cent ra l arm of Mountain Boy creek, while northern one feeds more into the southern a r m of B i g Gulch creek. One sample #8813 derives from this a rea , but most of the mineralized section sampled appears positioned eas te r ly , up-slope from the Mountain Boy work- ings. (samples 8812, 8815, 8816, 8817) A s mentioned before th i s general area needs to be explored further with geochemical techniques, ear l ie r i n the field season.

RECOMMENDAT IONS

Cause to be prepared a draf t of the proposed bridge and road construction to serve as access to claim owners of the American creek valley. Present t h i s draf t to the var ious par t ies concerned and obtain their agreement regarding the useful- ness and necessity of the project. Obtain several binding cost estimate contracts regarding building of the a ) bridges, and b) road. Re-apply to the Department of Mines for funding for the access construction . ( supported by several different owners of mineral property in the water shed of American creek) With the approval of the Mines Branch apply for free-use permits to cut and use timber. Commence bridge a n d road construction a t the ear l ies t , with a view of completion before inclement weather sett les in. Roads should be built witn curves and dips designed to allow haul ing- in of t r a i l e r s , and 'low boys ' . Plan for completion of project ea r ly in spr ing, and organize choosing of proper, sheltered camp s i te , to serve low-level exploration sorties. To be followed by access construction to the workings and continuance of American creek road to points fa r ther up-stream. The choice of a project engineer who would man- age the above recommended program is essential.
