The Alameda County Watershed Confluence Conference Call for Presentations, Posters and Fieldtrips3/30/2018

Conference Introduction & GoalThe Alameda County Watershed Confluence (“Confluence”) is a county-wide conference designed to provide a forum for local groups, community members and representatives from the public and private sectors interested in creek and watershed health to meet, network, share innovative ideas and inspire new partnerships in watershed management in Alameda County. The goal of this conference is to connect watershed stakeholders and encourage the sharing of information, ideas, and efforts.

Hosted by the Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District, the Confluence will take place on Wednesday, October 17th, 2018, at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center on the shores of Lake Merritt in Oakland.

The theme of the inaugural Confluence is “Sharing Ideas, Shaping the Future.” Through this theme, the conference will explore the management, science and collaborations shaping the future of Alameda County watersheds and highlight innovative, exemplary projects and programs.

We invite proposals for presentations and posters which explore one of the three focus areas of the Confluence through the conference theme: “Sharing Ideas, Shaping the Future.” To submit a proposal, please complete the proposal submission form at the end of this document.

Focus Area 1: ManagementThe goal of the Management Session is to learn more about the complex web of land ownership, jurisdiction, and regulations that govern the ways in which watersheds and waterways are managed in Alameda County. The Management Session will focus not only the ways in which managers have successfully navigated this complex system, but also on the constraints and challenges managers have faced as they do so. What are those constraints and challenges? Have managers found and implemented innovative solutions? This session also seeks to update community stakeholders on land management planning and restoration efforts affecting watersheds throughout Alameda County, and especially those efforts designed to address the issues our watersheds and waterways will face into the future.

Focus Area 2: CollaborationThe goal of the Collaboration Session is to highlight innovative partnerships happening within Alameda County focused on improving and restoring creek and

watershed health and management now and into the future. Exemplary collaborations may stretch across geographic or political boundaries, agency jurisdiction, communities, or socioeconomic levels. They may bring together agencies and organizations with different missions, individuals with different personal goals, and may happen on a small (within a city, or sub-watershed) or large scale (across counties or regions). This session intends to feature examples of collaborations throughout Alameda County that have benefited waterways and allowed the groups and individuals who participated to achieve more than they could have on their own.

Focus Area 3: ScienceThe goal of the Science Session is to identify and feature scientific methods and tools that have been shown to effectively address current and future challenges in watershed protection and restoration in Alameda County. Ideal methods and tools should be amenable to broad application and collectively address a variety of landscapes in Alameda County. Potential subject matter includes fisheries biology, stream and watershed ecology, botany, soil science, citizen science (including monitoring), as well as science-based educational efforts. Science tools that address different working landscapes are of interest including vineyards, olives, nut growers, ranching, and small-scale produce farmers.

Although examples from within Alameda County are preferred, the Alameda County Watershed Confluence welcomes exemplary and applicable examples for any of the above categories from other geographic areas.
