No apologies were received by the Secretary.

Fr. Shaun opened the meeting with prayers.

1. Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 28 March 2017 These were accepted nem. con.

2. MATTERS ARISING

Matters arising from the minutes of the previous meeting were largely dealt with under the subsequent agenda headings. Carolyn Opie raised the issue of monies from charity events being dedicated in some proportion to the needs of the parish; it has arisen, however, that the organisers of the Christmas Fair wish one third of the monies raised to be donated to the Sebeya, Connect2 project, something that Fr Shaun was delighted to endorse.

3. PARISH PRIEST’S REPORT – FR SHAUN CHURCH

Fr. Shaun’s full report is appended below - a summary of key points was presented to the meeting as follows:

‘I have presented a full written report on 2017 to the Annual Parish Meeting. I do not propose here to read the whole report out, but rather I would like to make a few observations and reflections upon a few key points.

Thank YouA flourishing parish is only possible thanks to the hard work and generosity of time, energy and enthusiasm given by so many parishioners in every aspect of parish life. I take this opportunity to thank each and every parishioner who exercises any ministry or role in the life of the parish; in liturgy, catechetics, youth ministry, social outreach, the social life of the parish and various administrative responsibilities. I am deeply grateful to all parishioners who exercise their baptismal vocation by participating actively in the life of the Church in all of these areas, which together serve to build up the Body of Christ in this place.

The generous way in which so many parishioners give of their time, energy and talents in so many aspect of our communal life, is also an enormous help to Fr Damian and I as we try to focus on our core mission of preaching the word of God, celebrating the sacraments and leading the community.

I also express my thanks to the Parish Team: to Fr Mark (retrospectively), to Fr Damian, to Kerry, our Parish Administrator and to Anke, our Parish Youth Worker, for all their hard work and commitment to the life of the parish. They are all a pleasure to work with and I am deeply grateful for all the support and encouragement that they give to me.

Generosity and Concern for the PoorEvery year I never fail to be amazed at how much this parish raises for charity, particularly through the Charity Christmas Fair and the Christian Aid Marketplace. For a small parish, we pack a mighty punch! I know very well, as I have drawn attention to in my full written report, that this doesn’t happen without a great deal of planning, organisation and sheer hard work by a group of committed parishioners, who year in, year out, give so very generously of their skills, time and energy so that each year’s success builds and exceeds the efforts of the previous year. The contribution that this parish makes to charitable causes at home and overseas is really out of all proportion to the size of the parish, and is something that we can look on as one of the real strengths and witnesses of this parish community.

Divine RenovationAs I look back on 2017 the most exciting development, I believe, has been the launch of our vision for parish renewal. In the autumn, Fr Damian and I began to share this vision with you, and we are both very much encouraged by the interest and support that has been expressed by so many parishioners. We are delighted that so many of parishioners have taken up our invitation to read Divine Renovation and it is very encouraging that some 62 parishioners across our three parishes are currently reading and discussing the book in the Lenten Reading Groups.

At Christmas, we launched our new “local custom” of Prayer Partners at Mass. This seems to have been very well received and is a very tangible way of us expressing both our desire to welcome the stranger and the newcomer and to deepen the bonds of friendship, support and community.

We are currently developing our plans for the launch of a Pilot Alpha commencing in May and a full launch of Alpha across the three parishes from the autumn of 2018. Alpha will help us to play our part in being faithful to Christ’s Great Commission to the Church: “Go and make disciples”.

This process of parish renewal on which we are now embarking will be a very exciting, albeit very challenging, journey. I firmly believe it’s going to play a very significant role in the spiritual renewal of our parishes and in helping us to rise to the challenge that Pope Francis makes to every Catholic, namely that we truly be “missionary disciples”.’

4. PPC REPORT – PETER MACKIE (CHAIR)

The PPC chair summarised the main points of his report which is appended below. No points or questions were raised by those attending.

5. FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT – CAROLYN OPIE (CHAIR)

The main points highlighted by Carolyn Opie were as follows:

Following the Planned Giving Campaign (PGC) the Offertory income had increased by 23%. A further tax refund for the financial year from HMRC was expected. A legacy and donations (derived from Growing in Faith and the PGC) had led to an income of over £11,000. With respect to expenses, there had been some £5,000 of property repairs and renewals – but we have still to pay the retention sum of the renewal works. £41,500 has been repaid on the loan for recent church and flat works - largely from drawing down on monies received through Growing in Faith - however although this represents a considerable percentage of the total loan to be repaid, we could not afford to continue repaying it at this pace; we might expect to pay off around £18,000 a year hereafter.  There remains, of course, the necessary work to be carried out in the corner of the church behind the organ (a mixture of penetrating, rising damp, and flat roof leakage): new drain pipes, and sealing of the joint between an external gully and the wall behind the organ are some of the requirements here. Once the external works have been carried out the damaged plaster will be removed, a damp treatment will be applied before repainting. These works are likely to last 9-12 months and could cost in the region of £10,000. Chimney related repairs, including renewal of flashing, are also separately needed; we are awaiting a quote to retile the porch over the front door. Following the refurbishment works a final snagging inspection has been carried out and faults rectified.  Most Health and Safety works are complete. We have purchased 11 new chairs in the church, a sunscreening blind for the organist, and panels for privacy during the Children’s Liturgy.  We are trying to find a contractor to remove the old notice board and erect the new one which was funded by a generous legacy. We would like to thank Peter Mackie and his team for his tremendous work in looking after the garden. We are delighted to have excellent tenants for the flat who share the building very well with us.  …………..

The secretary asked if we might be covered by insurance in regard to the damp issues aforementioned: this seemed uncertain but Fr Shaun hoped a donation from the Trinity Fund might be forthcoming on application.

6. SVP REPORT – MAUREEN FIELDS (CHESS VALLEY CONFERENCE PRESIDENT) This report is appended below. The considerable work of the SVP, carried out by a relatively small number of dedicated volunteers was praised by all attending, and Fr Shaun also proferred his congratulations.

7. ELECTION OF PPC MEMBERS Fr Shaun thanked the three PPC members, Duncan Farnsworth, Maureen Fields, and Patricia O’Sullivan, who were standing down from the PPC, for all their hard work, and reiterated the process by which the three PPCs would transform into one. He had received two nominations for the two vacancies, thus there was no requirement to vote and Toni D’Urso and Maggie Stacey were unanimously elected. 8. SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PARISH

A discussion was held regarding social activities - the following were the main ideas raised - a pre-Lent social, possibly with cheese and wine so as to keep food simple; a childrens’ Christmas party; a group theatre trip; a parish countryside ramble. It was agreed that a dedicated social events team was required for which volunteers would be needed. It was planned to address these needs more fully after Easter.

9. AOB

Jo Whelan proposed a vote of thanks on behalf of all the parish for Fr Shaun and Fr Damian’s ongoing hard work as our parish priests. This was unanimously endorsed.

10. DATE OF NEXT ANNUAL PARISH MEETING

Fr Shaun commented that the next APM would most likely be in late February or early March 2019, so as to coordinate with the other two parishes. The three PPCs will individually consider the requirements of the transition period and meet together in June or July 2018. In the autumn of this year an open meeting will be held in each parish to report progress and plans to the parishioners. Fr Shaun is very aware of the need to address how, under the new arrangements, we might best deal with practical matters relating to each specific parish.

ST JOHN FISHER, CHORLEYWOODPARISH PRIEST’S REPORT ON 2017

I hereby report on the events and activities that have taken place here at St John Fisher during the course of 2017.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL (PPC)During 2017 I met with the Parish Pastoral Council four times, in February, May, September and December. In July, for the first time, the PPCs of the three parishes met in a joint session. This was a very successful and interesting meeting as we shared experiences, thoughts and ideas. It was at this meeting that we jointly agreed to build a link to the community in Sebeya, Ethiopia through the CAFOD Connect2 scheme. At our autumn meeting pastoral council meeting, along with those of our sister parishes, we agreed that in 2018 we would begin a transition from three pastoral councils to one joint PPC to serve the three parishes, with the new joint PPC coming into effect in February/March 2019.

I’m deeply grateful to all the PPC members for the generous ways in which they give of their time and energy in working with me in develop the pastoral, spiritual and social life of the parish. I record here my sincere thanks to Patricia O’Sullivan, Maureen Fields and Duncan Farnsworth, whose terms of office now come to a conclusion. All three of them have served on the PCC for three years and I wish to thank them for the very valuable contribution that each of them has made to the work of PPC. I express my thanks to Peter Mackie, Chair of the PPC and to Malcolm Golin, its Secretary, for all the hard work and energy that they have, and continue to, put into these roles.

In January and September I met with the Chairs of the Pastoral Councils of the three parishes. These meetings were highly successful and a great opportunity to share news and experiences across the three parishes, as well as exploring new ways that we can work together.

LITURGY AND ADULT FORMATION

Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Advent and ChristmasFor our Lent 2017 programme we followed Bishop Robert Barron’s course Conversion and we prayed the Friday Stations of the Cross, which alternated around the three parishes. For Advent 2017 we had some evenings of Lectio Divina reflecting on the readings of the Sundays of Advent.

Our Holy Week and Easter celebrations were very well celebrated. I am particularly grateful to Patricia O’Sullivan for the preparatory work that she did with the Choir before Holy Week and to Sue Treanor, Caroline Holly and all the choir for their hard work in preparing for, singing and playing for the Holy Week liturgies.

For Advent 2017 we had some evenings of Lectio Divina (one of which had to be cancelled because of the icy conditions) reflecting on the readings of the Sundays of Advent.

Our 2017 Christmas Masses were equally well celebrated. I think particularly of the beautiful Christmas Eve Mass and the carols which preceded it. I express my thanks

to Patricia O’Sullivan, the musicians and the choir for all the hard work that they put into preparing for this beautiful celebration.Also at Christmas, we introduced what has now become a “local custom” – Prayer Partners at Mass. This simple gesture is a sign and reminder that we are present at Mass not as individuals, but as part of a community – a community that is called to be welcoming to the stranger and the newcomer, a place where the bonds of communion and fellowship are always meant to be being built up.

Thanks to a generous donation we were able to give a copy of Matthew Kelly’s book, Rediscover Jesus to everyone who attended one of the Christmas Masses across the three parishes.

I take the opportunity to thank Patricia, Sue and the Choir for all that they do throughout the year to make our parish music so uplifting.

I express my sincere thanks also to our sacristans, altar servers, readers, ministers of communion, welcomers for the ministry that they offer to the parish for Holy Week, Easter, Christmas and throughout the year.

I thank Rosemary Ellis for her beautiful flower arrangements and to Maureen Foggo and Juliet Hale for preparing the rotas for the various ministries.

CATECHETICSOn 26th May the Confirmation Mass for the young people of the three parishes was celebrated at St John’s, Mill End, by Bishop Paul McAleenan. I am very grateful to our team of catechists for all their work in helping to prepare the young people of our parishes.

On 28th May we had beautiful celebration of 1st Holy Communion, with three children and their families. I am very grateful to Elena McBride, supported by Jennifer McEwen, for her wonderful work in preparing the children so well for the sacraments.

PARISH STATISTICSDuring the year one baptism and two funerals were celebrated in the parish. The October Mass count showed an average of 95 parishioners attending Sunday Mass each week, down one on last year’s figure of 96.

SOME SIGNIFICANT EVENTS OF 2017On 22nd July, St John’s, Mill End hosted a music afternoon for the musicians and choirs of our three parishes, at which St John Fisher’s was well represented. This was a great success and hopefully something that can be repeated,

On 6th/7th April of 2017 we were joined at our Sunday Masses by Scott Albrecht from the Catholic Worker Farm. Scott spoke very movingly about the plight of the women that they care for and the support and the services they offer them at the Catholic Worker Farm and invited our support in any way that we are able. to give it.

In late May/early June I led a very successful pilgrimage to Northumbria in the footsteps of the early Northern saints. On 24th July we also had a lovely three parish day pilgrimage to Canterbury.

On 23rd September, Readers, Ministers of Communion and Welcomers from the three parishes accompanied Fr Damian and I to the Niland Centre for a very enjoyable Day of Recollection. Once again Fr John Hemer’s scriptural talks were very much appreciated by all who attended. It was agreed that, in future, the day of recollection would be open to all parishioners who exercise any ministry in the parishes.

CLERGYAt the end of August we said farewell to Fr Mark, as he moved after four years with us, to take up his new appointment of Diocesan Youth Chaplain. Fr Mark returned on 20 th

October for a very joyful Mass of Thanksgiving and celebration. In September we were joined by our new Assistant Priest, Fr Damian Ryan. Fr Damian has settled in very quickly and is already making a massive contribution to the life of three parishes. I wish to express my deep and sincere thanks to Fr Mark and Fr Damian for all the assistance they have given to me in so many different ways in caring for these three parishes. Fr Mark and Fr Damian are very different – but our parishes have been blessed in both of them!

I take this opportunity to record my thanks to Fr Graham Gillman and Fr Tim Dean, for all the help they give us in supplying for us when the parish clergy are on holiday or otherwise absent from the parish. On 26th September we had a special Mass of Thanksgiving, hosted at Our Lady’s, to mark Fr Tim’s silver jubilee of priestly ordination.

SOCIAL OUTREACH

Chess valley Conference - Society of St Vincent de PaulI am delighted that our Chess Valley SVP Conference continues to flourish and to develop the ways in which we reach out to those in the local community around us, not least through the very successful monthly Community Lunch, which is now very well established.

Christian Aid WeekChristian Aid Week took place in May and, as always, St John Fisher played a major role in the event. The Christian Aid marketplace, hosted at St John Fisher, was a great success thanks to the organising efforts of Mary Latimer and all the St John Fisher representatives on the organising committee, all the parishioners who helped them and everyone who came along and supported the event so generously.

Christmas Charity FairOn 2nd December we had our Christmas Fair which, as always was a great success and raised a record sum of money for our nominated charities. I express my thanks to Mary Latimer and all those who with her put in so many hours and so much work leading up to the Fair and on the day itself to make it such a success.

APF Mission BoxesI express my thanks to Mary Latimer for administering the APF (Red) Mission Boxes and to everyone who uses the boxes and so contributes to Missio’s work with some of the world’s poorest communities.

CAFOD I am very grateful to John Donohoe for his work as our Parish CAFOD Representative, especially in promoting the annual Lent and Harvest appeals.

CONNECT2: Sebeya, Ethiopia. At the joint meeting of the three PPCs in July, it was agreed that our three parishes should form a link with the community in Sebeya, Ethiopia through the CAFOD Connect2 scheme. I am very grateful to Malcolm Golin for taking on the role as St John’s Fisher’s representative for this three parish joint project. I am also delighted by a recent decision of the Charity Christmas Fair Committee that, in future, the third of funds raised at the Christmas Fair and currently allocated to Diocesan charities, will be reallocated to our CAFOD Connect2 Sebeya project.

YOUTH MINISTRYAnke Vos, our Parish Youth Worker, continues to develop a vibrant and varied youth ministry in our parishes. I am very grateful to Anke for her enthusiasm and hard work both with our youth groups and for her involvement with the Confirmation programme.

BLESSING OF GRAVESIn November, Fr Mark and I carried out the traditional blessing of graves at Woodcock Hill Cemetery, the Old Chorleywood Cemetery, Chorleywood Lawn Cemetery and in the Garden of Rest at Our Lady’s. These were well attended and much appreciated by those who were able to come along to them.

SOCIAL LIFE OF THE PARISH

Parish BarbecueOn 2nd July we had our annual parish BBQ. I express my thanks to everyone who helped prepare for and run this event. Particular thanks to John Smith for his excellent culinary skills at the grill!Quiz NightOn 10th November we had a St John Fisher Quiz Night, hosted at Our Lady’s. This was a great success and was very well attended. I express my thanks to Laura and Lawrence Turnbull, Jane and Serge Marston and Siobhan Hoy for organising and running this fun evening.Tea and Coffee after MassI am also grateful to the small teams of parishioners who make tea and coffee available after Sunday Mass on a monthly basis. It is always a good thing when there are opportunities for parishioners to socialize with each other after Mass.

STEWARDSHIPIn March 2017 we undertook a Planned Giving Review in the parish. I am very grateful to the Finance Committee for their work in organising this review. I record here my thanks to all the parishioners who responded so generously to the appeal made through this review.

PARISH ADMINISTRATIONI express my thanks to the members of the Parish Finance Committee for their on-going work in helping me with the management of the financial resources of the parishes. We are very fortunate to have a great team of financial experts making sure that the parish’s resources are managed both prudently and in accordance with Diocesan requirements. I express my thanks to Carolyn Opie, who is Chair of the Parish Finance Committee. Carolyn oversees the management of the parish’s financial resources with efficiency, prudence and great sensitivity to the needs of the parish. This is a crucially important task as we seek to pay off the Diocesan loan as

quickly as is prudent, whilst maintaining our property and supporting the life of the parish community. Carolyn will give her own financial report to the APM. I am also very grateful to Alan Opie, who has responsibility for property matters on the Finance Committee. Alan’s careful and meticulous approach to the maintenance, repairs and improvements to our building is very much appreciated,

Although she is not here in person to hear it, I wish once again to record my very great thanks to our Parish Administrator, Kerry Van Rensburg, who looks after the administration and book-keeping for all three parishes. In many ways, Kerry is the public face of the parish on a day to day basis, and she handles every situation with tact, precision, calmness and a warm smile. We are extremely fortunate to have her working for the parishes. I would be unable to carry out my role here without all the support and help that she gives me in the challenging task of running three parishes.

I am very grateful to Jennifer McEwen for the crucially important work that she undertakes as our Parish Safeguarding Representative.

In December I met with a group of parishioners who have kindly agreed to take on the role of Fire Wardens at Mass. I am very grateful to them for agreeing to take on this role. We are currently in the process of drawing up a set of procedures.

IN CONCLUSIONFinally, I wish to express, on behalf of Fr Damian and myself, our heartfelt thanks to the parishioners of this parish for their prayers, support and many personal kindnesses to both of us.

We know that you appreciate the challenges we face in serving three very different parish communities. Your understanding, patience and generosity of spirit have been, and continue to be, very much appreciated.

2017 was another very good year for St John Fisher parish and I look forward to all that lies ahead for us in 2018. This, I believe, will be a very significant year for our three parishes. During 2018 we will prepare to transition from three pastoral councils to one to serve the three parishes, with the purpose of deepening our understanding of what it means to be communities of missionary disciples and developing our plans for the launching of Alpha in the autumn of this year.

There will certainly be challenges for all of us along the way. Change can be unsettling, but without change there is no growth. I am deeply encouraged by the fact that so many parishioners, in different ways, are opening themselves up to the big questions about who we are called to be as Christian communities. Real parish renewal is not the work of a moment, nor even the work of year. It is a marathon rather than a sprint; it is a process that we all have to enter into daily but I am delighted and excited that we have made such a good beginning! ` Fr Shaun

SJF ANNUAL PARISH MEETING 20 MARCH 2018 – PPC CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

1. The PPC has met 4 times since the last Annual Parish Meeting & I would like to thank all PPC members for their support during this period when, as a relatively new parishioner, I have still been finding my feet in the Parish. I would also like to extend my thanks to Patricia O’Sullivan, Maureen Fields and Duncan Farnsworth, who are stepping down after completing their terms of office.

2. The focus of the PPC during our meetings has continued with the main issues identified the previous year, namely:

Growing Edges of the Parish – and in particular• Children’s Participation at Mass

Unfortunately there were a number of delays in getting this underway caused by the DBS checking process, but I am pleased to say that it has now been agreed that the Children’s Liturgy will start on 15 April. Many thanks to those parishioners who have volunteered to assist in this important participation in the mass by the children of the parish.

• VolunteeringAs a PPC we have had a number of discussions about volunteering and it is pleasing to note to that some new volunteers have come forward to help in the various activities regularly underway in the Parish to complement the regulars who continue to serve the Parish in this way.

• The Social Life of the ParishThe PPC had a number of discussions about the Social Life of the parish and noted the excellent ongoing work done by many parishioners in organising and supporting the events which take place every year, such as Christian Aid week and The Christmas Fair. We also discussed a number of other possible social events, including the quiz night which was held on 10 November. The PPC discussed the pros and cons of holding this event at our Lady’s understanding that some parishioners would be disappointed that it was not to be held at St John Fisher. In the event it was well-attended and proved very successful. In order to give parishioners the opportunity to consider further what social events to hold going forward, the PPC agreed to add a specific item on the agenda of this year’s Annual Parish Meeting to discuss the subject.

• The Proposal for the 3 Parishes to twin with a Community in the Developing World World ( CAFOD Connect 2)Following an initial discussion at the PPC meeting in May, it was agreed at the inaugural meeting of the PPCs from the 3 Parishes on 4 July (see below) that Sebaya in Ethiopia would become our partner in this programme. Malcolm Golin is representing the Parish in discussions on moving the project forward.

3. Meeting of the PPCs of the 3 Parishes

This inaugural meeting took place on 4 July and was a very welcome initiative to start to get to know the PPC members from the other parishes. 19 Members from the 3 PPcs attended together with Fr Shaun. We discussed a number of issues including the Connect 2 initiative, ideas about how the 3 parishes could work together going forward and coordinating the celebrations for Fr Mark.

4. Meeting of the Chairs of the 3PPCs The 3 Chairs together with Fr Shaun met once during the year on 4 September (unfortunately the planned meeting in February 2018 had to be cancelled owing to unforeseen circumstances). At this meeting the 3 Chairs exchanged updates on the latest developments in each parish as well as an initial discussion about developments in the 3 parishes going forward. Peter Mackie

REPORT FOR PARISH AGM: SVP CHESS VALLEY 2018Current MembershipFull members: 17 active Auxiliary members: 3Current WorkVisits to housebound, elderly, and supporting a young family, take place in Rickmansworth and Chorleywood and 2 residential homes.

Community Lunch: Usually 25/30 in attendance, sometimes up to 40 and often new people attending. Would like more parishioners from across the three parishes to attend. Always need helpers and these do not need to be SVP members. Please contact an SVP member who can put you in touch with Geraldine Page if you can help.

SVP Christmas Lunch: 35 people attended. There was carol singing, games and presents. It was enjoyed by all who attended. Donations for this were received from M & S West Wickham, SVP Westminster and Tesco Rickmansworth. Also a very generous donation from a parishioner who paid the £5 donation for everyone who attended.

Catholic Worker Farm: Collection of needed items requested in parishes and regularly transported to CWF (long life milk, toilet rolls). Also requested items as presents for 12 refugee Mothers. These were collected from the three parishes, wrapped and delivered to the CWF. Donation given to CWF to pay a utility bill. Also any specific requests for items (e.g. fresh fruit, cooking oil, babies nappies) are purchased and delivered.An appeal was made by SVP members at all Masses the weekend of 27 th/28th January for items needed on a regular basis by the CWF. The regular donations of LL milk, toilet rolls and cleaning products save the CWF these ongoing costs.

Material assistance given through the year: To families in need of help; baby milk, nappies, items of food. A one off payment in helping with rent.

Sponsorship to 2 young children to attend the St John Bosco camp summer 2017.

Twinnage: twinned with a SVP Conference in India, which we support through prayer, communication and an annual donation. We have a Twinnage officer who corresponds with them and received a card from them in July. We also received a

letter from the SVP Central Council of Eluru in India explaining the very difficult circumstances in which they work.Student sponsorship: We have committed to a 4-year term to sponsor a Higher Education student, vocational training for between 1 to 4 students (depending on the length of the training) and school education for 1 student. Sponsorship is paid annually.

Prison Visits: 2 SVP members accompany Fr Shaun on his monthly prison visits to celebrate the Mass.

Young Vincentians: A small group of young people now form the B Attitude Group and meet fortnightly at OLHC. Visits to Westerley Care Home have been made by the young people. They also attended a supper at the CWF.

Events:Mass and Adoration at OLHC took place on 4th November: The intention was to pray for the work of Chess Valley SVP and in particular the B attitude Group.

Support for Vinnie Packs for the homeless: • 5 SVP members have attended days for putting together the Vinnie packs in an old
