ZenZebra has been trading since 1973, first in London and now in HK.

ZZ has a thirty year history of buying and selling art around the world. It was set up by two friends with a mutual interest in art. Much has changed in the art world since 1973, especially additional works from “emerging markets” such as China and India becoming more available.

However there remains an inner core of “smart collecting”; a term used to describe those with a discerning eye who buy for pleasure, and whose collections in turn often become investments.

“Look less and feel more” as the saying goes; the essence of building a collection is to find and buy what you like. Merely buying for investment is a short term policy which can backfire, with art as with fashion much changes but much remains the same.

Our intention is to present you with artists who we have known and dealt with for over twenty years and whose work we are happy to guarantee.

ADELAIDE

9

Adelaide is married to a painter. They live together in the mountains to the north of Milan where she has supported her husband while bringing up a family. She herself has slowly developed her artistic ability. In the last ten years in particular, she has become something of a force to be reckoned with.

ASVERI

Page 11: ZZHK Gallery Catalogue

11

Asveri is a lover of animals and in particular dogs. He lives quietly in an Italian village near Milan. Some years ago when looking to add texture to his paintings he came upon a disused marble quarry.Using marble dust has made his paintings what they are. Their unique texture is a mixture of marble dust and oil paint.Over the last few years Asveri has also explored the infinite boundaries of etching, working directly onto copper with aggression and gusto.Asveri’s art reflects the nature of a man who loves animals and one who is extreme on his views of life with an uncompromising vision of his craft and ideals.

ST. CLAIR

Born in Brazil in 1955, St. Clair is “an enigma wrapped in a mystery”. Silent for some years he has resurfaced with a changed method and approach. St. Clair has become internationally well known as he has exhibited worldwide to great acclaim.

NONCENTINI

Page 15: ZZHK Gallery Catalogue

15

“Noncentini is Italy” said one headline of a Japanese newspaper which reviewed his work in Tokyo. There seems to be a strange almost symbiotic relationship between Noncentini and Japan;a fusion between the strange whimsical grey blue of Florence and the delicate lines of Japan.Nonchentini wroughts an atmospheric romantic emotion amalgamated with controlled Japanese discipline.Every Noncentini exhibition in Japan has sold out. His exquisite craft brings a degree of admiration from all who set eyes upon the work.

OLIVIERO MASI - OILS

Page 17: ZZHK Gallery Catalogue

17

Oliviero has been both instigator and catalyst. He has inspired and cajoled and in the process changed many peoples views about art. Oliviero has worked for many years with aspiring artists in his studio on the mountains near Milan. He has painted what he knows best, the mountains and landscapes of his beloved Tuscany. From a desperate childhood wrought with the fear of being cast into a role he despised and through sheer force of his personality and talent, Olivierio has realized his dream of being an artist against the wishes of his family.Today, Oliviero is considered a master painter, an accolade which few living artists can claim in their life time.

OLIVIERO MASI - GRAPHICS

Page 19: ZZHK Gallery Catalogue

19

Oliviero Masi has a long and highly successful career creating graphic art and now also loves taking photographs especially of graffiti which is painted on walls in obscure places. Over the last few years he has started working on translating these graffiti images into art pieces. Illustrated here, are two art pictures taken from a wall in Formantera in The Canary Islands.

LEE BREWS

It is said you can smell a whiff of the African plain in Lee's work, reflecting the fact that his family has been in Southern Africa for over 400 years. Despite leaving Africa as a yound adult and a multi cultural life and training his work still has an African feel.Over the last few years Lee has started a research program; looking at the mind and the impact of art on creativity.

He has written a book with this concept in mind adding portraits of the various people he worked with as a therapist. He has won numerous prizes; had his work exhibited at the Royal Academy summer exhibitions, as well as having pieces in a number of museums including the Johannesburg Museum of Modern Art.

DAVID HOCKNEY

Page 25: ZZHK Gallery Catalogue

25

Hockney has over the last few years returned to his beloved Yorkshire to paint the landscapes he admired as a boy. In his time he has experimented with many different techniques including Polaroid photographs. Many people assume him to be American. He went to California to see the sun and stayed for many years painting the blue skies and swimming pools.“A bigger Splash” is a film which has become synonymous with Hockney. His skill however is translating the obvious into the miraculous.

NOEL WILSON PHOTOGRAPHS

Tin Bo Shan, Gyalthang. From the series ‘Rise High - A Journey onto the Tibetan Plateau’. A limited edition black & white collection, toned, hand printed and signed by the artist.

Noel Wilson was born in Scotland and now resides in Asia. An Independent Film Director and photographer he has filmed in over 20 countries, working his craft for 20 years.

“As one journeys to the heights of humankind, you learn that the spiral works both ways. What yousense deep within yourself and is often hidden, is thus reflected in the landscapes and peoples youmeet as you take the leap of faith with only your spirit. Rising higher on the plateau, you elevate your soul into greater layers of awareness. You touch on the true majesty of life; Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.”

Village Girl. Gyalthang. This is Joh Mai Lai, an 8 year old girl resplendent in a field of Highland barley.

This high energy crop provides food for the 20 million people who live on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Crop rotation is a constant cycle of life. The whole village works the land, children learning from an early age, the importance of nature and its life giving properties. The essence of the land is reflected in all who live here.

Always a great observer of people from her childhood Gabrielle Churchouse has dedicated her working life to capturing the beauty and spirit that lies in each and every one of us. Gabrielle’s personal perspective carries throughout her work. Her ethos is simple – to capture the unique beauty and essence of each person she photographs. “When I look through a lens at a person I see what makes someone love that person… I see the beauty in a face and hopefully that shines through in the photograph.”
