Willy Porter with Carmen Nickerson:righteous indie-folk
ZUMBROTA – Guitarist and singer/songwriter Willy Porter hasbeen turning first time listeners into die-hard fans for more than twodecades. He and singing partner Carmen Nickerson bring their brandof righteous indie-folk for a night of high-test tunes and tons of fun toCrossings on Friday, October 23, 7:30 p.m.
Porter’s signature finger-picking guitar work and rich songwritingcreate a one-of-a-kind musical ride that has energized audiences allover the world from stages shared with icons such as Jethro Tull, ToriAmos, Paul Simon, and Jeff Beck.
Nickerson’s soulful vocals and playful singing style pair exquis-itely with Porter’s grooves to produce soaring harmonies that addfresh layers and new depth to Porter’s songs.
The duo is touring in support of Porter’s new record, Human Kind-ness (2015), his most sophisticated production to date. Human Kind-ness brings Porter’s acoustic, electric, and multi-string chops to bearon a stunning group of songs that explore themes about connection, compassion, and the triumphs and struggles of the human journey. From the Who-influenced anthem “Freedom,” to the lighter than airlove song “Roses in the Rain,” to the powerful wake-up call of the titletrack, “Human Kindness,” this record is a full musical experience.
Porter’s warmth and wit on stage keep people grinning, but it’s hismusic that keeps them coming back for more.
Having toured with artists as diverse as Jeff Beck and Tori Amos,Porter is a practiced performer with a portfolio of songs that span awide range of styles. The audience will hear blues, post-bluegrasscountry, groove-laden folk and the influences of Woody Guthrie inPorter’s music.

“Lucky” Suzy Bogguss returns toZumbrota
ZUMBROTA – Suzy Bogguss has been at the top of country musiccharts with songs such as, “Aces,” “Drive South,” and “SomedaySoon,” and released an album of Merle Haggard covers in 2014.Crossings brings her smokin’ acoustic trio, with Charlie Chadwick onbass and Craig Smith on guitar, to the Zumbrota State Theatre stageSunday, October 25, at 7 p.m.
They’ll play songs from her new CD as well as all her hits and fanfavorites. Bogguss didn’t set out to craft a Merle Haggard tributerecord. Some might call that serendipity; she just calls it “Lucky.”
“Merle Haggard is a hell of a storyteller,” says Bogguss. “When Ihear his songs, I feel like I’m listening in on someone’s life.”
On her new album, “Lucky,” a collection of songs all written byHaggard, Bogguss does more than just listen—the CMA, ACM andGrammy Award-winning singer makes the country rebel’s composi-tions her own, reinterpreting classics like “The Bottle Let Me Down,”“Silver Wings,” and “Today I Started Loving You Again,” from afemale point of view.
“Merle is one of the most masculine songwriters I’ve ever heard, and I’ve been watching boys cover his music for years. I just thought,‘Why couldn’t a girl do this?’” Bogguss says.

The story behindRed Wing stoneware
RED WING – Mix up your lunchroutine and take a History Breakat the Goodhue County HistoricalSociety. Bring your lunch to theHistorical Society (1166 OakStreet) on Wednesday, October21 from noon to 1 p.m., and learnthe history behind one of RedWing’s most important and his-toric industries: stoneware andpottery. The program is free ofcharge and starts at noon. Bever-ages are available for purchase atthe museum.
Stoneware manufacturing was
one of the industries that placedRed Wing on the map in the late1800s. Boasting superior clay andtalented potters, Red Wing Stone-ware became synonymous withquality products soon after theindustry began. Over the years, the industry adapted to changingtimes, focusing more on artisticpieces in the 1940s and 50s beforeclosing in the 1960s. Today, BruceJohnson has revived the industry, and will discuss the history andmodern significance of stonewareto the city.
