Once someone called out to Ibn Al-Mubaarak saying “O Zaahid!” (O the one who has renounced the world) Ibn Al-Mubarak replied: “The real Zaahid is Umar ibn Abdul Azeez for indeed he rejected the tremendous pleasures and riches of this world that were placed at his feed, whereas I have very little to give up.” (Ibnul Qayyim Taziya’Tul’Nufuus Chapter of Doing without the Life of this World.) Rather, one should turn away from it; it is said Zuhd means to refrain from this Dunya (world), without showing off.’ [pg 18] Al-Ju’nayd said: ‘Zuhd means to free the heart from always wanting.’ [pg 18] The great Imaam, Imaam Ahmed said: ‘Zuhd is not to have too many expectations.’ [pg 18] Imaam Ahmed also said: ‘Zuhd in this world is: ‘not’ to be overjoyed with what one possesses and not to be distressed by turning away from it (i.e. the world). So, Imaam Ahmed said: ‘yes; but with one condition, which is, if his wealth increases he does not become too
