They railed him the Yanqui Mannero theYankee Sailor. Silas Markam had corne toMonterey on a whaling ship and so lovedthe place, he stayed.

His westherbea ten face leering above thehuge, bright anchor tattooed on his chestgave him a frightful appearance. Yet thechildren loved him, and soon all Montereytook him lo their hearts. Now, after many years, Silas Markam was

a poor but respected member of the com-munity. He spent long hours each day sitting,in the plaza spinning yarns about his adven-tures at sea.

But Silas had ether work to do. He was try-ing to establish a cattle ranch on the SalinasRiver. And everyone wished him well.

Everyone, that is, except the- Mora brothers. These unscrupulous rascals thought they sawin Silas an^eaay prey.

"Look at him," they told each other. "Allhis free time he spends with Jos ninos, thechildren, He doesn't know the first thing

then let me summon the Comandanrfe fromthe presidio and we will get our cattle back."Monterey was a small town, and news

travelled fast. Soon everyone knew that thebeloved Yankee Sailor had been robbed.

"But how will he establish his claim to thecattle?" everyone asked one another, "It iscommon knowledge that his cattle carry nobrand."

Later, at the Mora place, Silas and theComandanfe confronted the unscrupulousbrothers.

"That is one of mine," the sailor said, pointing. "And that one, and that one, too."

Soon, with his keen sailor's eye ferretingout the fresh brands, Silas had picked outforty-seven cattle that he claimed to be hisown, the exact number that had been stolen.

&NOTNEWSmog is one word made up out of two smoke and fog. It hasbecome the subject of a great deal of talk lately- just as if itwere something1 new. It isn't. Smog was a problem when LosAngeles was a pueblo, although not so pronounced' as today.

Id the days of Zorro, it was the Indianswho caused the smog. Half-starved, theywould start a series of brush fires to smokeout the rabbits hiding in the bushes.

Forced out into the open, the rabbits be-came easy prey for the Indians, who feastedroyally while the smoke which they hadcreated rolled across Los Angeles.

In the days of Zorro, cattle raising was thenia, and great ranchos were established to

To obtain land through a grant from thegovernment, a man would submit a mapof the acreage he wanted and promise tostock it with the required number ofcattle, build a house and plant trees.

With the surrounding ranch owners aswitnesses, the new grant was surveyedand the boundaries measured by a reata,or cord of rawhide, attached to stakesthrust into the ground.
