Zooplankton is a categorisation spanning a range oforganismsizes including smallprotozoans

and largemetazoans. It includesholoplanktonicorganisms whose completelife cyclelies within

the plankton, as well asmeroplanktonicorganisms that spend part of their lives in the planktonbefore graduating to either thenektonor asessile, benthicexistence. Although zooplankton are

primarily transported by ambient water currents, many havelocomotion, used to avoid predators

(as indiel vertical migration)or to increase prey encounter rate.

Ecologicallyimportant protozoan zooplankton groups include theforaminiferans, radiolarians

anddinoflagellates(the latter are oftenmixotrophic). Important metazoan zooplankton includecnidarianssuch asjellyfishand thePortuguese Man o' War;crustaceanssuch ascopepodsand

    krill;chaetognaths(arrow worms);molluscssuch aspteropods;andchordatessuch assalpsand

juvenile fish. This widephylogeneticrange includes a similarly wide range in feeding behavior:

filter feeding, predationandsymbiosiswithautotrophicphytoplanktonas seen in corals.Zooplankton feed onbacterioplankton, phytoplankton, other zooplankton (sometimes

cannibalistically),detritus(ormarine snow)and even nektonic organisms. As a result,

zooplankton are primarily found in surface waters where food resources (phytoplankton or other

    zooplankton) are abundant.

Through their consumption and processing of phytoplankton and other food sources, zooplankton play a role in aquaticfood webs,as a resource for consumers on highertrophic

levels(including fish), and as a conduit for packaging the organic material in thebiological

pump.Since they are typically small, zooplankton can respond rapidly to increases in

    phytoplankton abundance,[clarification needed]

    for instance, during thespring bloom.

Zooplankton can also act as andiseasereservoir. They have been found to house the bacterium

Vibrio cholerae, which causescholera,by allowing the cholera vibrios to attach to their chitinousexoskeletons.Thissymbioticrelationship enhances the bacterium's ability to survive in an

aquatic environment, as the exoskeleton provides the bacterium with carbon and nitrogen

Holoplankton mencakup beberapa contoh diatom, radiolaria, beberapa dinoflagellata, Foraminifera,

Misalnya, siklus hidup kompleks

    multiseluler hati Fasciola mencakup tiga generasi yang berbeda: 1) "dewasa" hermafrodit, 2) sporocyst;

    3) Redi.

meroplanktonic:are organisms that areplanktonicfor only a part of their life cycles, usually thelarvalstage. Examples of meroplankton include the larvae ofsea urchins, sea stars, crustaceans,

    marineworms,some marinegastropodsand mostfish.

locomotion:which is the act of self-propulsion by an animal

Ecologically: relations that livingorganismshave with respect to each other and theirnatural

    environment

Tentang 275.000

spesies diakui, baik hidup maupun fosil.
