Kyan has just turned 8yrs old and competed in the 8/9yr boys section. He came an outstanding 2nd after the final 3 sprinted over the last 200m to the finish line. He will be going to Eastern Creek in Sydney to compete in the State Cross Country on July 19. Kiahn came 15th and Jackie came 6th. A great effort for representing our school. Congratulations Riley Riley Neaves recently went away to Barooga, on the Victorian/ NSW boarder for the PSSA State AFL Carnival. Over 3 days Riley played 6 games winning 3 and losing 3. The North Coast team came 10th out of 13 teams. Riley played extremely well over the carnival and his huge effort earned him the NORTH COAST BEST PLAYER award. Riley has earned the honour of having the PAUL KELLY perpetual trophy sent to Bellingen Public School for the next year. Riley’s strong efforts have almost gained him a spot in the NSW STATE TEAM... He was selected as the 1st reserve for this team. Well done Riley...amazing effort. Soccer Stars On Tuesday 4th of June, both the boys and girls soccer teams traveled to Urunga to compete in the second round of the PSSA Knockout competition. The boys' game was played first (much to the dismay of my chivalrous nature) and it was a great start to the day. The opening bout was a tough slog with both teams showing excellent skills in defence. A few great saves by our goalkeeper, Demian, kept Urunga scoreless during the first half and a nicely placed goal by Kiahn, helped Bellingen lead 1-0 at the break. The second 25 started just as tough with the boys' fatigue starting to set in. Bellingen demonstrated quality passing techniques and with a few goals added in completed the game winners 4-0. (Goals: Kiahn Lane - 3 and Ned Peterson - 1.) Next, the girls played their game in scorching heat. Both Urunga and Bellingen played to a high level and were great competitors on the day. Bellingen played excellently in defence and kept the ball from the opposition for majority of the first half. Jacquelline showed off her expertise up the middle with three goals in quick succession to bring it into half time. Urunga came out firing in the second half but the Bellingen defence managed to keep them scoreless for the rest of the game, finishing 3-0. A great testament considering the Bellingen girls only had 10 players for the entire match, no reserves! (Goals: Jacquelline Kambere - 3.) Congratulations to both of our teams! Round 3 for both teams will be played this Friday, the 14th, at Connell Park against Sawtell PS. Bellingen Public School. They are enthusiastic, well prepared and really work to know the students they are working with. I have observed several teaching, and their lessons have been remarkable. It has been a pleasure to host such professional and keen people. A special thank you to all staff who have contributed to these teachers’ professional growth, and especially to Kate Sommerville, who coordinates the prac experiences here at the school. Student reports All student reports are now completed and are undergoing review. They will be with you in week 9, Thursday 27 June. Formal parent/ carer and teacher meetings will follow in early term 3. (A date to be notified.) My role I have been asked by the Primary Principals’ Association to lead a project in the credentialing of principals against the Australian Principal Standard (AITSL – Australian Institute for Teacher and School Leadership). I will be away from Bellingen Public School now for all of term 3, although I intend to be at major events hosted by the school throughout this period. While it is both an honour and humbling, I remain committed to Bellingen Public School, so I plan to be back in term 4. Details of the relieving principal are still being finalized, and I will keep you informed. Regards

Graeme Ross, Principal

Year 6 Are Terrific! Peer Support is powering along on Wednesday afternoons! This is due to the outstanding leadership shown by our Year 6 students who are the Peer Support Leaders. Each week they take their group of 16 or 17 students through a range of activities focusing on themes such as friendship, resilience and bullying. As a finale to Peer Support the whole school will be involved in an activity afternoon on Wednesday 19th June, starting at 1pm and finshing at 3pm. All Peer Support groups will rotate around a variety of weird and wacky activities such as bubble blowing, gum boot throwing and ping pong ball races - just for fun! Parents are more than welcome to attend and even join in.

Stage 1 Choir Concert

Members of Stage 1 sing each week in a 45 minute choir session. Many of the concepts of music are taught through these lessons and we always have lots of fun.

We missed our annual performance at the show this year but would very much like to share our half years’ work with you.

Next Monday June 17 we have an ‘open’ choir lesson at the usual time of 12.10 to 12.40 and would like to invite parents, grand parents, and any interested community members to our little concert.

You will be amazed at the student’s memory for lyrics, their ability to switch genres, their part singing and wonderful pitch.

Come along and join in the fun!

Ms Scott, Primary Music Specialist

Order Of Australia Medal Congratulations Nea Armstrong who have worked tirelessly for our school community and the Bellingen Community for many, many years was recognised for this outstanding contribution with an Order Of Australia Medal. This was part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Move To Learn Move To Learn 2013 Stage One have been having a great time in Move To Learn this term! With all children from Kindergarten to Year 2 taking part, the Move To Learn circuit focusses on activities to develop core strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and agility. Move To Learn seeks to provide students with physical activities to not only enhance their health, fitness and well-being, but also to have a positive effect on their learning in the classroom, as increasing research and anecdotal evidence is showing a positive connection between motor skills such as balance and coordination and performance in areas such as reading and handwriting. Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the P&C, Move To Learn will continue in Term 3. Notes will be going home today seeking parent and carer volunteers to come along and join in the fun! Book Club

Thank you to everyone who helped and purchased from the BOOK FAIR we have earned enough to receive some new books and also the school is entitled to a copy of each of the winning books in Book week in August.

The book club that was sent out last week is due back on Thursday 13th this week. The order will hopefully arrive back before the end of term.

We are continuing the funny photos of your family reading, or even individuals reading in strange places. Some of the older children have enjoyed looking at some fascinating photos so they may have the inspiration to help. Please email them to the school.

New Demountable Classroom Begins

Our new classroom for our 15th

class is one step closer now. The site was levelled and workmen will continue to prepare the foundations for the demountable building which will be delivered soon and will be operational for the start of Term 3.

Canteen News No one has suggested any names for our as yet unnamed multi-flavoured, cheese and pastry delicacies. Please get some creative juices flowing and submit some ideas as I would not prefer to resort to calling them “those things over there with the Vegemite and cheese in them”. Remember, if anyone has a good idea for a name for these delicacies, please write it on a piece of paper with a student’s name and class and drop it in at the canteen before Friday, 14 July. If anyone of these is deemed to be so good that we use it, the Canteen will give a free meal, drink and lunch-time treat to the student named with the suggestion. With the weather getting even colder some Cornish Pasties may be the trick to warming things up as a special this week. As usual they will be available on Thursday and Friday for $3.50 or $5.00 with a drink. Eddy Vardabasso, Canteen Manager

ATTENDANCE AWARD

You had the best attendance at our school last week.

It’s cool to be at our school

Teacher Creature Feature – Kim Prior

Ever wondered more about your teacher or staff member, but been embarrassed to ask it? This week Aliza Jones asked Mrs Kim Prior a few questions

1. Do you have a favourite memory or occasion at Bellingen Primary that you can share with us?

I have many favourite memories at Bellingen Public School, just to name a few; Mrs Head dressing up as the Cat in the Hat for book week, Mrs Vardabasso always wearing green and Mrs Mayo running really fast with her arms and legs straight in the staffroom. But mostly I have enjoyed watching many Bellingen students on their very first day of Kindergarten and the excitement on their faces!! 2. Do you have a favourite animal? If so, what is it? I'm a bit of an amateur bird watcher. I also like watching the chimps when I go to the zoo....... they make me laugh. 3. What is your favourite time of the day? i.e. morning, evening, night, lunch time or dinner time? I think I'm probably a morning person. 4. What is your favourite type of chocolate Lindt orange dark chocolate 5. What is your favourite band or song? I like a lot of different music so choosing just one is quite tricky. Some of my favourite artists are Sia, Foo Fighters, Regina Spektor, Jeff Buckley, Weddings Parties Anything and even a bit of Fleetwood Mac. I could keep going but I won't!! 6. What is your dream car? Why? I don't have a dream car. I'm happy driving my Subaru Forrester. Its

reliable, comfortable and I can plug my Ipod in. 7. What is your favourite ice-cream flavour? Pistachio gelato!! 8. What super power would you have and why? Invisibility because I would be able to read my book without anyone finding me. Actually I would be just happy with Harry Potter's cloak and then I could share it with my friends. 9. Can you remember your favourite toy you had or played with as a child My beautiful Grandmother Leila gave me a baby doll when I was 6 and she made lots of clothes for her. The doll was very precious to me just like my grandmother. 10. If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and why? It would probably be the Dalai Lama to remind me that the simple things in life are what makes us happy........... like ……. Lindt orange dark chocolate!!

Thank You Bunnings Kandy from Bunnings presenting the school with vegie seedlings as part of their Sustainability promotion in schools. Photo shows Kandy with Benn and students from his gardening group excited to start planting!
