Imagine the world in the grip of a zombie outbreak. What’s driving the behaviour of the afflicted? How conscious are zombies? A desperate society would turn to scientists for answers. ZombieLab: Grappling with consciousness features live games, performances, experiments and talks from leading researchers to help you get to grips with the zombie brain. It could be your key to survival.

‘I’m excited to be helping explain some of the science behind our consciousness at ZombieLab. These iconic beings, zombies, offer a fun way to pose questions about this important field.

‘Consciousness is a vital topic to study, related to the most intimate and meaningful aspects of our existence. Consciousness is at the heart of abortion issues, animal rights, questions of residual awareness in vegetative state patients, and, in future, rights for artificial beings.

‘Philosophy has for centuries grappled with questions of consciousness, such as whether our minds are separate from our bodies, whether we are just a kind of computer, and if our sense of subjectivity is a unique, unavoidable feature of consciousness. But science, in contrast, tries to explain the psychological components of awareness, and how it is generated by the brain.

‘Thanks particularly to brain-scanning techniques, much progress has recently been made, and sophisticated theoretical models have emerged that highlight surprising features of the nature of our experiences.’

Dr Daniel Bor, neuroscientist at the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science, University of Sussex
