  • Greetings from the ZombiCon MOMBIES!

as founders of ZombiCon Ft. Myers and the charity for the arts, Pushing Daizies inc, we would like to thank the community for sticking behind our cause! Since 2007 our event has grown into an amazing community function that we all look forward to!

In 2011 ZombiCon spawned Pushing Daizies Inc, a non profit for the Arts, and we have busy this past year making our mark in the community.

as much as we have been through this past year, dealing with the after math of ZombiCon 2012, our own family and children and real jobs we hope that people are starting to understand what we do to make this event a success. We need your support not only the day of ZombiCon , but the rest of the year too!

Pushing Daizies is growing, and with events like Los Muertos, Lakes Park Midevil Faire, The Rock Brothers Beer Fest and more to be announced, we will be able to make a huge difference in the lives of children interested in art and music this summer!

Janet and I have worked very hard to get ZombiCon back on track, back to our roots and still remain safe, secure and friendly for all ages! Expanding the street perimeter to include Bay and Main Street will help

ZombiCon 2013 Theme at a Glance

    A look into the past...

When we create the themes for ZombiCon, our goal is to give fans a direction. We want ZombiConners to harness their creativity and come up with a zombie persona thats original and interesting. If it were just a zombie theme, wed expect a lot of bloody t-shirts and ripped jeans. But ZombiCon is more than that. Its a festival of self-expression and artistic creativity - not just an excuse to get bloody. So as far as costuming goes, I say push yourself. Try for something that takes some effort. Its a much bigger payoff and, coming from

experience, a much better time in general. Make us proud, Southwest Florida.

  • GRANDFATHER OF THE ZOMBIE George Romero & Ft. Myers Ghoulish Cinematic History By Rachel Telfor Carnivore Queen

Imagine, if you will, a rotting corpse, slowly lumbering toward you with blood dripping from its mouth and a hungry, vacant look in its eyes. Thats right - zombies! If youre a die-hard zombie fan, you have no doubt heard of the grandfather of the Zombies - the one and only: george a. Romero. Romero, born in 1940 in nYC, started his career shooting short films and commercials. One of them was a segment for Mister Rogers neighbourhood in which Mr. Rogers undergoes a tonsillectomy! Believe it or not, this piece is what inspired Romero to go into the horror film business. (Lets face it: a guy who changes his shoes after he comes into his own house is a bit scary!) In the late 1960s Romero and nine friends formed their own production company. This is when The grandfather co-wrote, produced and directed a cult classic and created a defining moment for modern horror cinema: night of the Living Dead. In 1978 george released Dawn of the Dead, on an unheard of budget of just $500,000! Impressive, considering the film grossed over $55 million worldwide. The Dead series changed the face of horror movies in a massive way. In 1985 Romero finished the trilogy

with a film called Day of the Dead. This significant title is one of the main reasons Zombicon is celebrated every year Downtown Fort Myers! georgeRomero described Day of the Dead as a tragedy about how a lack of human communication causes chaos and collapse even in this small little pie slice of society. He intended this film to be his undead epic, but after budget disputes and an artistic need to release the film unrated (thanks George), the budget was cut from $7 million to $3.5. Even with the meager millions and scaled-back script, Romero managed to release yet another classic and one he deemed his personal favorite of his original Dead trilogy. The opening scene of this cult classic was actually filmed in our very own downtown Fort Myers! In fact, if one were to ask around, they just may know someone who played as a zombie extra in the film. As compensation, extras were said to have received a single dollar bill, signed by Romero as well as a hat that read, I was a Zombie in Day of the Dead.

Some would agree that being forever immortalized as a zombie in one of The Grandfathers films was compensation enough! So while youre in the Zombicon mood this year, rent the film and draw some inspiration from where it all started, or just enjoy seeing zombies walking our very own streets, brain-eaters lurking in our Fort Myers alley ways, and undead invaders patrolling the streets we casually stroll every day.. Since the beginning of Zombicon the Zombicon Security Team aka The Goon Squad has always been there to act as a buffer between the zombie population and the living public. This group is a band of mercenaries that have formed to help keep peace between both sides. But now due a freak accident from Teslas unearthed time machine, zombies from all time periods are coming through the time rifts. Zombies from the past, present and future. But with every time period coming through there are members of the goon Squad coming through also. So a once small group of mercenaries is growing into a peace force from different time periods and realities. alex Morse, Captain of Zombicon Security Team

Pushing Daizies has been busy all year long creating new art programs for children, including the Black Crayon Kids, a new art mentoring program launching in 2014.

Pushing Daizies sent two children to South West Florida Music academy this summer. They also worked with the Tabarini Foundation, donating two Dean Guitars, making it possible for underprivileged kids to get the guitar lessons they so dearly wanted. Janet Demarco said We are very proud of the work we do...if only we could do more....

Our passion for art and children makes it impossible for us to quit! Said Janet Planet Demarco, president of Pushing Daizies. We have set goals for us as a non profit, and we wont stop until we get what we want, says Vice President nicole Long. • Mainstream of the Dead

    Steam Up the Art

by Lee Karr When the hell did zombies become so damn popular? I fell in love with the living dead way back in 1985 at the tender age of 13 and that love is still going strong today. But back then if you liked zombies you were looked at as sort of strange, not very cool. Zombies in those days had a small cult following, you could say. Todaymy 68 year old mother likes zombies! how in the name of Romero did this happen? I began tackling this question by channeling my inner gallup, using social media to poll the thoughts of my friends and fellow zombie enthusiasts on Facebook, of course. The responses I received all varied, which was not surprising. But the amount of thought that a lot of them put into their responses did surprise me. The subject hit home and it was something they all felt passionately about. For some it goes into deep psychological dissertations about how we are our own worst enemy: we are the monster. For others the view is much more political, with the zombies representing the underclass of our society and the oppressed. and yet for others its all about pure adventure and escapism. all of these theories are present in George Romeros zombie films - he has stated so himself. Look back at his original 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead and you can see it clearly, but that was 45 years ago! his sequel Dawn of the Dead shared the same traits and that was 35 years ago! So why now are these misshapen monsters gaining such a strong foothold in popular culture? What is it about pure motorized instinct that fascinates the populace? how have these pus brain bags of shit managed to become mainstream? The modern incarnation of the flesh eating zombie, the one that first appeared in Romeros masterpiece night of the Living Dead in 1968, has been with us now for 45 years. until the recent onslaught of the last decade the only time zombies got a little shout out in pop culture was when Michael Jackson danced alongside them in his groundbreaking music video Thriller in 1983. Then something interesting happened in the late 1990s when a couple of video games started bringing some life back to those shambling creatures: Resident Evil and The house of the Dead. Kids could now play a first person shooter style game where they could blast the living dead before they too became one! Perhaps that is where this current renaissance started?

If you find yourself moaning and shuffling around the Patio De Leon this October, you will find an interesting art show hanging in the Windigos. The Windigos are the large windows attached to the same building as The Indigo Room. Featured artists, in this Steampunk Themed Group Art Show include, Banky Ferano, Jerry McGreens, Mully and hoolie huffer. The show will be displayed until the end of October.

In 2002 Danny Boyles 28 Days Later was released to both commercial and critical success. Even though the creatures are considered infected, its widely viewed as a zombie story. That same year the movie

version of Resident Evil would come out and it too would be a box office success. But it was 2004 that would be a game changer for the sub-genre with the release of two very successful zombie films: Zack Snyders remake of Romeros Dawn of the Dead and Edgar Wrights zom-rom-com Shaun of the Dead. Both of those films - in particular the Dawn remake - solidified how successful zombies can be and in turn would help to bring Romero back to the genre he created in 2005 with Land of the Dead. From there a glut of zombie

films, far too numerous to mention them all, would begin to pop up across the world, including sequels to both 28 Days Later and Resident Evil. Romero himself would make two more zombie films after Land with Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead. By 2009 more and more respected actors were appearing in zombie films. Case in point: Zombieland, which featured Woody harrelson and Bill Murray. Just this past year John Malkovich appeared in Warm Bodies, another zom-rom-

com. and one of the biggest movies stars in the world, Brad Pitt, outbid another powerful movie star, Leonardo DiCaprio, for the rights to Max Brooks acclaimed novel World War Z. Who would have ever thought youd see the day that there was a $200 million dollar zombie movie with huge movie stars? Just recently it was announced that arnold Schwarzenegger was signed on to do Maggie which is, you guessed it, a zombie movie. Its just insane to think about it. Back in the 1970s and 1980s zombie films were no budget, exploitation films with mostly unknown actors. If you appeared in one it meant that you couldnt do much better, there was a stigma attachedbut not anymore.

Zombies not only have been flooding cinemas but they are making their presence known on television as well. Commercials for Toyota, honda, FedEx, and Starburst have all featured the living dead in them. Perhaps the biggest and most visible proof that zombies are cultural icons now would be the success of AMCs The Walking Dead. an incredibly successful show, both ratings wise and critically, The Walking Dead has turned people who were not zombie fans previously into rabid ones now.

Like I hinted at before, my Mom watches the show! The season three finale, which aired at the end of March, set ratings records with nearly 12.5 million viewers tuning in. The show has been such a hit for aMC that they created an after show, Talking Dead, to discuss the latest episode! and it doesnt appear ready to slow down any time soon. So that leads us back to where we began. Why are zombies so prevalent today? honestly, Im not sure. Maybe theyre late bloomers? Maybe as a friend of mine on Facebook suggested zombies are like bacon, another recent bizarre fad. Personally, Ive always been attracted to the genre because of the human interest angle: how will the characters handle the situation? Romero dealt with those themes beautifully and The Walking Dead is following in his footsteps. Plus its always fun to see some extreme gore! Im afraid though that I dont have a concrete answer for you. It seems like the zombie virus itself, there are no answers for its cause. I think the best way to sum it up would be to quote the words of a heroic Jamaican helicopter pilot who once said You aint never gonna figure it out. Just like they never figured out why the stars are where theyre at. It aint mankinds job to figure that stuff out.

  • Dead Snow (2009)Review byZachary Miller

This norwegian horror film starts like so many others; a group of college kids on their way to a remote cabin in the mountains for spring break. You might roll your eyes, and say This old chestnut?

but when one of the main characters starts naming other horror movies that started the exact same way, you know youre in for a treat. The friends make it to the remote cabin and immediately start partying, until a mysterious stranger shows up for some coffee and handy exposition. He weaves a bleak tale about the nazis that occupied that area during the war. Commandant herzog led a band of 300 men that generally brutalized and stole from everyone in town. The townfolk rose up against their oppressors and the ones that werent killed by the enraged mob were chased off into the mountains, never to be seen again. The creeper takes his leave after his harbinger of doom shtick is over and the group promptly finds a chest of stolen Nazi gold. This awakens some very angry zombie nazis that want their misappropriated gold back at any cost. After this the movie really picks up speed with one gory kill after another. The college students are relatable enough to root for, and the zombies are quick heartless bastards that just wont stay down. What makes this film stand out and helps it rise above the typical zombie fare is its wicked sense of humor. There are several great laugh out loud moments that you might have to rewind and watch again. The kills are creative and done with old school effects and fountains of blood. The setting is gorgeous and the camera work never ceases to amaze. Dead Snow won the audience award at the 2009 Toronto After Dark Film Festival and in my opinion is one of the better zombie movies to come out in recent memory.

High Schoolof The DeadReview byashley Bolling

Like Zombies? Like anime? They have bread and the results are killer! You do not have to be an anime enthusiast to enjoy this series created by Daisuke Sato. It has all

the thrill, chills, and blood spills one would expect from a zombie t.v show with the added bonus of a thoughtful and exciting story line that makes this show positively addicting. This story follows a group of bad ass high school students who must defend themselves from the undead after the pandemic hit during a seemingly normal day. It wasnt even half way through the first episode and I had already fallen in love with this show. Our characters are wise beyond their years and maturing rapidly due to their new terrifying situation. Yet underneath it all they are still, just a bunch of kids. Its remarkable really. This show really reflects how a state of emergency can really change someone. We expect an adult would have a better chance than a 15 year old child, but these kids become adults and heroes almost immediately. Saving each other and strangers whenever feasible. I truly admire these characters for their bravery and empathy in the dark

Zombie Film ReviewsReviews brought to you by the great folks from the Horror Aficionado facebook group. For years, we have banded together to discuss and critique the fine and not so fine films in the horror genre and have relished in celebrating its rich and diverse history. From the expressionist silent films to the Hammer clasics to todays modern gore fare, we cover everything.

and dangerous times that is the zombie apocalypse. Its not just how heroic the characters are that makes me love them; they are also quite quick with the witty and hilarious dialogue. You cannot help but laugh out loud at this show. The characters are, after all children, so they will make immature stabs at each other and bicker almost like brothers and sisters. There is a love-hate atmosphere between the characters and the delivery of the script is well done (Even in the English dubbed version) you feel the playfulness as if these were your own jack ass friends giving you a hard time. If its not the humorous dialog, its the way the show seems to have to make a boing noise at ever jiggle of a boob or bottom. This show is up there with the likes of Shaun of The Dead in zombie comedies. Be advised this show does have strong sexual innuendo. They never show nipples or genitals and the sexual scenarios are far more hilarious than sexy, but this is not a show to watch with your kidsor overly religious people The last and most amazing aspect of this show is the combat. This show does take place in Japan after all, so all of our main characters are great with weapons. Those who werent so great at first quickly become skilled masters. The combat is beautiful and coming from someone who isnt big on action, that is saying something. The combat almost reflects a ballet, a gorgeously executed ballet. It almost seems like our characters had been training for this their whole lives. (One character had been trained in combat her whole life, but the rest had not) There is a certain passion in the combat here and it is apparent that these kids actually enjoy what they are doing, for more than just saving themselves. This incredible show out ranks The Walking Dead in this my book and is an absolute must see. This show has ever thing you want in a zombie apocalypse story but please God, do not take my word for it. You owe it to yourself to see it as soon as possible. You can find this gem anywhere on the internet, English dubbed or subtitled. 5 out of 5 brains.

I Walked witha Zombie (1943)Review byRon nelson

During the Second World War, hollywood became a well-oiled horror machine, producing an ever-expanding heap of horror movies to meet with the growing demands of the public,

who sought refuge from the real life horrors of the war. none of these studios was more successful at creating genuinely frightening and intelligent horror movies as RKOs B- picture unit, and no other picture was as thoughtful, haunting, and poetic as 1943s I Walked with a Zombie. The story concerns Betsy Connell (Frances Dee), a nurse who travels to the mysterious Caribbean island of Saint Sebastian to care for plantation owner Paul hollands (Tom Conway) catatonic wife. Falling in love with Holland, she promises to bring his wife back to him and soon discovers the islands superstitious Voodoo roots. Taking its title from a sensational story appearing in American weekly magazine, Producer Val Lewton aimed to elevate the film beyond its lurid source material and instead drew inspiration from Charlotte Brontes Jane Eyre and Daphne Du Mauriers Rebecca. Together with director Jacques Tourneur and screenwriters Curt Siodmak and Ardell Wray, he fashioned his masterpiece. What makes I Walked with a Zombie so memorable is how rich it is with atmosphere. Cinematographer J. Roy hunt saturates

the film with stylistic dark shadows that could easily compete with the best film noirs of the time. The score, by Roy Webb, is filled with lovely melodies and lullabies that are graceful yet minimal; the soundtrack relying more on the mournful sounds of the wind, voodoo drums, and silence, to establish mood rather than a bombastic horror score. Filmed on sets borrowed from RKOs a-pictures and bathed in stunning gloom, it creates a dreamlike and romanticized vision of the West Indies that is completely mesmerizing. The films horror comes solely from suggestion and atmosphere, creating a true sense of psychological dread without even a hint of onscreen violence. Before the sensationalism of todays gut munching undead, I Walked with a Zombie shows just enough to imply more and asks us to take a chilling look into the dark.

Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972)Review byRon nelson

In 1972, armando De Ossorio directed the first of four films in his delightfully creepy blind dead series. The resurrected Templar Knights might be the scariest zombies ever created and this film may be one of the most influential horror films of the 1970s.

In a European castle in the middle of nowhere, the Templars, a fictionalized version of the real Templar Knights, are resurrected when the sun sets. Being horrible sadists in life, the Templars were burned at the stake and their eyes were eaten out by crows, resulting in their blindness. nightly, they return from the grave as shrouded skeletal figures and feed on the blood of the living. Thought they cannot see, they locate their victims by sound.an unfortunate woman decides to spend the night in the ruins and is feasted upon by the ghouls. Eventually, her friends venture to the castle hoping to find her and end up having to fend off the relentless undead Templars.Though the pacing of the film is a bit slow and its very short on plot, Tombs of the blind dead more than delivers when it comes to mood and creepiness. Its also one of the first European horror films to combine graphic violence with sex, becoming a true exploitation classic. What makes the movie so memorable are the Templars themselves, the magnificent and eerie locations, and the haunting musical score. The Templars arent mealy greasepaint smeared ghouls like most undead in films at the time. They are completely skeletal and shrouded in hoods and rotting medieval garb. Coming in droves, like an army, they slowly shamble along, reaching out their skeletal arms and relentlessly listen for their victims. They are inescapable and unstoppable, and in their reaper-like are hoods are like death itself literally creeping up. One can run for so long, but the undead fiends will eventually get you. To up the ante, the Templars ride on undead horses and carry swords in pursuit of their victims. More than just mindless flesh eaters, they are sadistic in nature and occasionally add sexual torture to the mix. as a result, the Templars are some of the most nightmarish and memorable creatures in the annals of horror. I honestly cant say enough about them. The movie was filmed in a crumbling Spanish castle which serves as possibly the most sinister, creepy sets ever put to film, being further augmented by a chilling score composed mostly of chants. The film contains a high level of eerie atmosphere, making Tombs of the blind dead an unforgettable film experience. It was followed by three sequels: Return of the evil dead, The ghost galleon, and night of the sequels. I would highly recommend the second one as well.

    The Living Deadat ManchesterMorgue (1974)

    Review byRon nelson

Being released under over 15 different titles internationally, The living dead at Manchester morgue (a.K.a: Let sleeping corpses like, Dont

open the window) is often mistakenly considered to be a British film. Its actually a Spanish/Italian production from Spanish filmmaker, Jorge Grau. However, for better or worse, it and films of its kind were responsible for bringing horror out of the Victorian era and away from the classic gothic set pieces that were formerly popular, thus changing the face of the genre forever. This film is perhaps the best zombie movie to be released in the genres humble beginnings between night of the living dead and Dawn of the dead. George (Ray Lovelock), a motorcyclist very much of the Easy Rider mold, is on his way to an antique shop when his motorcycle is accidentally damaged by a girl named Edna (Cristina galb of what have they done to Solange? fame) at a local gas station. after demanding a lift to his destination, the two find themselves at a dead end beside a river. While stopping for directions, they witness a large machine in the field and upon inquiring about its use, they discover that the machine is used to destroy insects by blasting sonic radiation waves into the ground. Edna is soon attacked by a shambling man by the river and its eventually revealed that the radiation has brought the dead back to life. The ghouls unintentionally frame the couple for murder and while dodging attacks from the creatures, they are also on the run from a cop who wants to take them in.The living Dead at Manchester Morgue may be responsible for setting the Italian zombie genre into motion. It might have been Dawn of the Deads influence that would later inspire a rash of imitators, but this earlier effort tends to get overlooked. Filled with gruesome gore and chilling set pieces, the film begins as a slow build but becomes something of unrelenting shock. Its visually interesting with its depiction of the living dead shambling along the British countryside, through crumbling cemeteries, and eventually laying waste to a hospital. Jorge Graus direction is first rate and loaded with atmosphere, further enhanced by lurid colors and the occasional gothic trappings. Living dead at Manchester morgue is a classic Zombie film that is filled with tension and a constant sense of dread. Though the gore might be tame by todays standards, at the time it was unparalleled by anything else. however, the atmosphere more than makes up for it and the characters are actually worth caring about. The Film has since become a cult classic and its reputation is well earned as it manages to be both scary and incredibly well made. In the end, this is one of the more imaginative horror films of its era and one that shouldnt be overlooked.

Zombi 2 (1979) Review byRon nelson

1978 saw the release of the quintessential zombie film, George Romeros Dawn of the Dead. Italian horror maestro Dario argento was given license to create his own cut of the film in Europe and it was given the tile Zombi over there,

becoming a massive success. One of the popular trends in Italian filmmaking was to churn out often inferior cash-ins or fake sequels to hit films. Thus, the release of Dawn of the dead almost single handedly inspired the

Italian zombie genre and an unofficial sequel/ Cash in, Zombi 2 was quickly put into production. Directed by famed filmmaker, Lucio Fulci, who had been responsible for such great giallo mystery films as Dont Torture A Duckling and Lizard In A Womans skin, directs the film with more integrity than is usually found in these exploitative titles and fashioned what most consider to be his masterpiece. It was released in the united States simply under the title of Zombie and became notorious in the U.K as Zombie flesh eaters, where it was quickly banned. It is perhaps the greatest of all of the Italian gore epics and is responsible for steering the sensational genre away from the Cannibal and mondo films that it was previously known for.An abandoned ship washes into New York Harbor, where it is investigated by two harbor patrol officers. Suddenly, a hulking zombie attacks them, ripping the throat out of one officer and being fired upon by the other.

The boat is revealed to belong to the father of a young woman, anne Bowles(Tisa Farrow). however, all that she knows about her father had left for the Island of Matool in the Caribbean and that she had not heard from him since. Meanwhile, reporter Peter West (Ian McCulloch) is sent to investigate. The two meet and decide to venture to Matool to find her father. What follows is a Journey to an island of voodoo superstition and swarms of walking corpses with an appetite for human flesh.Despite its exploitative beginnings, Zombi 2 may be my favorite zombie film. Gianetto De Rossis effects far surpass Savinis work in Dawn of the dead and are genuinely unsettling, especially when you come to the films most famous set piece, the infamous splinter in the eye sequence. Fulci loads the film with atmosphere, transforming the island of Matool into a dreamlike, nightmare world of fog with a constant tinge of grime that permeates nearly every scene. This makes the films gory offerings all the more grotesque, visceral, and dirty. One can almost feel the tropical heat of the island upon viewing the film. The cinematography is downright brilliant and establishes a true sense of dread, despite the characters themselves being virtually paper thin and annoying at times. At times, Fulcis work recalls the best Spaghetti westerns in style, fully taking advantage of its wide screen format, while also being perfectly suited for tighter shots which create a feeling of total claustrophobia. At the end of the day, Zombi 2 is a fine zombie film and one that I would consider essential viewing for anyone who is in love with the genre.

Hell of the Living Dead (1980)Review byRon nelson

Over the years, Ive seen nearly one-hundred Italian horror films and one theory that I have about them is that the more alternate titles one has, the worse the

movie is; Released under the titles: Virus, Zombie creeping flesh, and Night of the zombies (and probably a zillion more), hell of the living dead is a prime example of this rule. The film is directed by infamous knock-off and exploitation filmmaker, Bruno Mattei and written by Claudio Fragasso of Troll 2 fame. With these two schlockmeisters at the helm, hell of the living dead could easily be considered so bad that its good.

Our journey through cheesiness begins with a team of scientists creating operation sweet death, a chemical created to solve the worlds population problem. In typical zombie movie fashion, the agent is released and the world becomes infested with the living dead. Later, A swat team finds themselves on a top secret mission in Papua new guinea where

they encounter the titular flesh eaters, along with a group of vacationers. Together, they fight for survival and seek to find the cause of the infection. Ill begin with the part that everyone is here for-The gore. Luckily for gore hounds, its plentiful. However, those looking for realistic depictions of gory mayhem should look elsewhere as the effects are completely laughable. a charming staple of bad Italian horror films is that the filmmakers always seem to be so focused on their gory set pieces that they forget that the human body isnt made out of silly putty. The zombies themselves are unimpressive though, mostly consisting of men in glistening, unset greasepaint and the few gory ones look like theyve had their faces dunked in cherry pie. another important element of a good-bad movie is the acting. here its completely mad-cap and perfectly complements the zany and utterly stupid characters, who spout a stream of constant one-liners, courtesy of Fragossos signature flair for laugh-inducing dialog. unfortunately, the score is composed of pieces stolen from goblins scores for Dawn of the dead, Contamination, and beyond the darkness. While these scores are fantastic, its really distracting if youve seen those movies. What keeps this movie from being the perfect laugh-fest is that it is bogged down by a constant use of stock footage, mostly from nature documentaries and mondo shock films. These scenes go on forever and stop the movie dead in its tracks, while not adding anything at all to the narrative. So, unless the idea of watching ten minutes of ancient burial rites and villagers eating maggots seems entertaining to you, Id recommend keeping the fast forward button handy. Overall, I would recommend this movie as something to watch with a group of friends and a few beers. Its one of my favorite bad movies.

  • Since the first light bulbs of mortal awareness and social responsibility flickered brightness into the minds of human creatures, varying concepts of death and peace have been pulling at the reigns of our collective drive forward and desire to do so with purpose. The communal conversation on fear and faith manifests across a broad spectrum of thought and action. Two big contributors to the conversation here in SWFL are the ZombieCOn team and Peace Day in the Park crew. Only from the creatively grainy sands of Ft Myers could seemingly paradoxical concepts work in cooperation. Peace Day in the Park, a free community event held on the closest Sunday in September to the International Day of Peace, began six years ago as a small gathering of friends in Cape Corals Jaycee Park. Zachari VanDyne, event organizer, just celebrated his 6th Peace Day in the Park on September 22, 2013 with over 70 vendors, non-profits and artists collations showcasing what peace means to them to the days long flow of attendees. Mr. VanDyne and ZombiCon work collaboratively on different

levels, intentionally and not, to ensure each others success. Both events were born within a year of each other from a demographic that seemed to say, lets stop talking and have some fun! While some may resent life in a small town, organizers on both sides are empowered by our tightly knit community and the support that is fostered by respect earned from hard, earnest and sincere work. There is a palpable force of movers and shakers in this SWFL tribe for action

that is easily accessible. There is no need for only blue suits or political platforms to affect change. Whether one dresses for an insatiable need for brains or relaxes in the shade under the intention of peace, both fruits fall from the same tree of creativity and community.
