The Theme of the Day Faith in Action

Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 National well being comes from obedience to God‘s commands

Ephesians 6:10-20 Christians battle against wickedness Mark 7:14-23 Good living comes from a believing heart

Sermon “Equipped for the Battle” – Ephesians 6:10-20

God has equipped you for battle with … 1. the belt of truth, 2. the breastplate of righteousness, 3. the shoes of peace, 4. the shield of faith, 5. the helmet of salvation, 6. the sword of God‟s Word, and 7. prayer.

If we will use the equipment God Himself supplies, we will be able to stand our ground against the devil‟s schemes in every evil day.

Statement of Communion Practice

Luther found his deepest treasure in the forgiveness of sins and called it “the sun around which all other doctrines revolve like pla-nets.” Jesus promised forgiveness in the Lord’s Supper. Deeply thankful for His gift to us here, we also express our deep desire to celebrate the sacrament according to His Will. As this includes doc-trinal oneness, we practice close communion and asks guests to speak with the pastor before the service.

We remember our members who are celebrating birthdays this week—Brandon McCloskey, Madelyn Gardner, Richard Buuck (his 97th!), Ethan Short, David Mourey, Jr., Phyllis Everett, Aaron D. Conrad, Elaine Derrow, Madison Cross, Jim Heckman, and Ethan Lichtle. We also remember the

pastors who serve our Wyneken School—Rev. Dreyer, Rev. Brege, and Rev. Dahling—as well as Toney Bergman who is at Northwest Elementa-ry. May our loving Savior direct, bless, and guide their lives.

Congratulations to George & Barb Geyer who will celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary this Saturday, September 5. May the Lord continue to richly bless this couple.

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need of His healing hand. We especially remember Jim Riemke, Roz Schamer-loh, Marilyn Dafforn (Hollie Hormann‘s mother), Ned Sielschott (Sean Sielschott‘s uncle), Nathan Coffey (Amber Conrad‘s brother), and Connie Darnell (Carol Hitzfield‘s sister).

We remember those who are serving our country—Jason Putteet who is in South Korea, Andy Buuck (Jan Buuck‘s and Cheryl Bultemeyer‘s ne-phew) who is in Afghanistan, Randy McAllister (Fern Riemke‘s son and brother of Kim, Terry, and Julie), Nic Timm (Lowell & Jean‘s son), our re-servists, Mike Brandt and Cody Kiess (grandson of Gene & Irene Kiess), James Johnson (Jean Timm‘s nephew), and Chad Hall (Doris Conrad‘s son-in-law). May the Lord protect and guide them in their missions.

During this Pentecost season, we will be reviewing the chief parts of Luth-er‘s Small Catechism. Today‘s review covers Christian Questions with Their Answers, prepared by Dr. Martin Luther. They first appeared in an edition of the Small Catechism in 1551. Questions 1-11 will be covered this morning. Please turn to pages 329 in your Lutheran Service Book.

Board of Stewardship‘s Food for Thought - If God‘s grace is our power source to live as God-pleasing stewards, love is the basis. “We love be-cause He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Love begins with God. We can love Him and others because He first loved us. God is love, and He loves us more than our minds can imagine. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). What greater love can be received than that Jesus laid down His life for sinful people like us?

You can watch Worship for Shut-Ins on Sunday mornings at 6:30 a.m. on WPTA-TV Channel 21, at 8 a.m. on Digital 33.2 & Satellite 252 on Sunday mornings, or on Comcast Cable Channel 55 on Sunday and Monday af-ternoons at 4 p.m. They also broadcast via the DIRECTV Channel 377 on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time. Frincke from Concordia Lutheran Church in Ft. Wayne will preach. His sermon, ―Loosened Tongues,‖ is based on Mark 7:31-37. Touched by God‘s love, we often keep quiet about it, but the Spirit and Jesus enables us to speak and share the good news of Jesus.

Attitude toward Ownership

It is so easy to have the attitude that we, rather than God, own the things we possess. It‘s my car, my house, my computer, and my money. After all, didn‘t my hard work and sweat enable me to acquire all I have? Only through the faith that God gives us are we able to understand and accept the words of Deuteronomy 8:17-18: “You may say to yourself, „My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.‟ But re-member the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you the ability to pro-duce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your fore-fathers, as it is today.” Scripture is clear about God‘s ownership. God declares, “The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine, declares the Lord al-mighty” (Haggai 2:8). In the words of King David, “The earth is the Lord‟s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1). Clearly God is the owner; we are only stewards of what He has entrusted to us. We determine for ourselves whether we will use money in God-pleasing ways or solely to satisfy our own desires. How we resolve the ownership-of-money issue will determine how we view and use our money. Money

Page 12: Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Friedheim 10653 N 550 W Decatur ...Aug 30, 2009  · Questions 1-11 will be covered this morning. Please turn to pages 329 in your Lutheran Service Book

can be used for providing food and shelter, as a medium of exchange for obtaining other necessary goods and services, and for helping the poor. Money can be misused or abused in excessive living or by engaging in illegal and immoral activities. Money is not evil. The Apostle Paul said in 1 Timothy 6:17, “God . . . richly provides us with everything for our en-joyment.” It is the love of money that leads to all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Loving or desiring money is not dependent upon how much money you have. You can have a lot of money and not love it, or you can have little and love it to death.

A Person’s a Person No Matter How Small

In the Dr. Seuss classic, Horton Hears a Who, Horton the elephant is the only one who can hear a still small voice calling to him from his ―world‖ on a speck of dust. As the story unfolds, Horton is introduced to the citizens of Who-ville and learns various lessons about the diversity but importance of each individual, and the importance of standing up for what he knows is right. Horton was ostracized by the other animals in his community for believing in the voice from Who-ville. In much the same way, following the leading of God in our lives is not always an easy or popular task. Trusting that God has done everything necessary for our eternal salvation is one thing—but responding to His tremendous grace day by day? Hour by hour? Minute by minute? Sometimes we feel we are too busy, or too in-telligent, or too in control, or too ‗cool‘ to give God what He deserves—our undying gratitude and devotion all the time, not just on Sunday mornings. Being a part of a faith community like our church can help. Not only are we surrounded by living examples of God‘s faithfulness, but we are also surrounded by opportunities to serve Him by serving those around us. Seeing examples of God‘s faithfulness helps our faith to grow, and oppor-tunities to serve help us to become responsible Christians as we put our faith into action. Like Horton, who had the faith to believe in a world he could not see, we are surrounded in our congregation by great examples of faith and responsibility. Do yourself the favor of getting to know those around you in church. Start off with a simple ―hi‖, or a simple question about their families, their jobs, their hobbies, etc. You will be blessed, and you will be a blessing.

Readings – Faith in Action Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 – National well being comes from ob-edience to God‘s commands – Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you. … Observe

them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understand-ing to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, ―Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.‖ What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach
