FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

A thought that has been enduring in mind when it be-

comes real; is truly an interesting and exciting experience. The department of mathe-

matics and computer science introduced the forum “Zeitgeist” meaning the spirit of

generation . This conclave had a series of competitions. This Newsletter showcases

the activities of the forum. This newsletter is intended to be published once in a year.

Proper communication plays a vital role in institu-

tion’s development. This news letter will serve to reinforce and allow increased

awareness, improved interaction and integration among all of us. .

It will also help in building up teamwork which is very

much needed today in the world of competition. It will provide a platform for expos-

ing the merits and academic achievements of the students.

This is only a small step towards a long journey. To

achieve progress and to meet objectives we have to cross numerous milestones. This

issue of newsletter should inspire all of us for a new beginning enlighten with hope,

confidence and faith in each other in the road ahead...... Happy Reading !

I am very happy to see that Mathematics and Computer Science department of St. Thomas College is bringing out its first newsletter of their forum “ZEITGEIST”. Our institute is one of the

leading institutes which have taken a leap forward in the quality technical education. Today, we engage with commitment and enthusiasm in Academics, Extra Co– curricular activities and Community Services.

This newsletter will give information about the progress and development of the department. I congratulate the faculties and students for their devotion and commitment towards forming this forum. I also congratulate the editorial team for this beginning and looking forward to reading the issue.

Activities for the session 2014-15 of the forum

The Mathematics & Computer Science forum “ZEITGEIST”. It is a German word which means ‘The spirit of generation’.

Capital letter Z in red colour stands for the word Zeitgeist. Red is the colour of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, strength and love. Marigold coloured Letters M and C stands for mathematics & computer science. Marigolds are symbolic of passion and creativity. Mathematics is the foundation of Computer Science. Therefore in the logo M stands at the base.

The inaugural Ceremony of Mathematics & Computer Sci-ence forum “ZEITGEIST “ was organized by the P. G. de-

partment of Mathematics & Computer Science in St. Tho-mas College, Bhilai on 25th September, 2014.

The function began with the college prayer followed by the customary lighting of lamp by the Principal (St. Thomas College) along with other dignitaries. Then Head of the Mathematics & Computer Science Department, Dr. Suja Varghese welcomed the gathering . Dr. Reny George, Principal St. Thomas college

inaugurated the forum “Zeitgeist” and its activi-

ties, which was followed by his presidential ad-dress in which he motivated the students for re-search and community services.

Further the function was proceeded by the pres-entation of the activities under the forum pre-sented by the co-ordinators Ms. K. Manju & Mrs. Seril Saji( Teaching Faculties). Then the function was wrapped up flourishingly by the vote of thanks given by Mrs. Veena Kaimal ( Lecturer).

On 25th September 2014 two activities Mathmania & Techmania were organized for the Graduate & Post Graduate students of Mathematics & Computer Sci-ence which was judged by Dr. Suja Varghese, Dr. Jay-shree Balasubramaniam, Mrs. Smita Suresh Daniel & Dr. Ujjwala Supey. The Activity was a great success with huge number of participations.

The winners of Mathmania were Netra Kumar Gupta (M.Sc-Mathematics-Ist Semester and Aditya Kumar(B.Sc. Part-I) and that of Techmania were Neha Ku-mari (M.Sc. Computer Science), P.V. Nishant Krish-nan ( BCA-I) and V. Tejeeta (B.Sc. Part-II).

Under the aegis of Zeitgeist , the P.G. Department of Mathe-matics & Computer Science organized a Community Service “

Learning With Fun” from 28th October to 30th October, 2014 in St. Thomas College for 45 students of Class IV & V of Govt. Middle School, Ruabandha. The first day 28th of October, the activity started with the col-lege prayer and welcoming of the teaching staff and students of the school. The students were provided with long exercise note books, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, stickers and chocolates by the college management. The two day session of Mathematics started with Introduction to fractions by Mr. Keshwar Pratap Rajwade (M.Sc. Mathematics- IIIrd Sem) and then Comparison of fractions by Mr. Netra Kumar Gupta (M.Sc. Mathematics- Ist Sem).

On the Second day 29th of October, the session continued with Addition & Subtraction of Fractions by Mr. Akash Sharma (M.Sc. Mathematics- IIIrd Sem), Multiplication of Fractions by Mr. Keshwar Pratap Rajwade (M.Sc. Mathe-matics- IIIrd Sem) and Division of Fractions by Mr. Netra Kumar Gupta (M.Sc. Mathematics- Ist Sem). On the last day 30th of October, the one day session of Computer Science started with Introduction to Computer by Ms. Ojaswita Bhandari (PGDCA) and Ms. Doli Ur-washa (PGDCA). The description of Word & Paint was given by Ms. Neha Mishra (M.Sc. Computer Science – Ist Sem). This session was continued with one hour practical session led by all the P.G students of the Department. After the completion of the activity all the 45 students were distributed a small token of love by the teaching staff of the Department.

On 5th December 2014, the written pre-liminary round for the mathematics quiz competition was conducted in which four teams were selected for the final quiz competition Algebrakers.

The Mathematics quiz competition “ALGEBRAKERS”

was conducted on 12th December 2014 in which the first position was bagged by TEAM Anuj Kumar Choubey, Manmohan Singh Thakur, Rumana Quasimi and second position was bagged by TEAM Palak, Jain , Adititya Kumar and Khageshwari Bhagat.

On 12th December 2014, the written preliminary round for the Computer science quiz competition was conducted in which six teams were selected for the final quiz competition Techguru.

The final Computer science quiz competition “TECHGURU” was conducted on 16th January

2015 in which the first position was bagged by TEAM Cup Cake V.Tejeeta, Monika and Navish Kunjam and second position was bagged by TEAM Eclairs Deepa Goyal, Abhishek Kumar and Kritika Singh .

Then the activity Imagemania (chart/poster/model making competition was held on 21st January in which many students participated. The winners for model making were Ritu Bala Banchor , Akanksha Gideon, Somveer Sonvani and Balwant Xalxo from Mathematics and Kiran Suroshe, A. Kiran and Shruti Upadhyay from Computer Science. The winners for chart & poster making were V.Tejita and V. Divya from Mathematics and Ragini Singh, Remya. R and Anujay from Computer Science.
