MESSAGE
Aragón is playing a leading role in logistics, and it is certainly our duty to play an even more important role in the coming years. This is not merely a matter of chance. We have been working steadily for more than a decade to make it happen and, in addition, in this legislature we have taken key steps to consolidate the leadership of Aragón in terms of distribution and supply chain across southern Europe. Our community has great potential in terms of logistics, which has also been reinforced, not only thanks to the work of both the public and private sectors, but also that of the Zaragoza Logistics Center. A center of excellence in research and education in logistics, part of an important ecosystem established to reinforce the leadership of our community in this field. Aragón has the location, the economic activity, the talent and the ability to achieve this. The collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) provides support to develop and disseminate knowledge. At the same time, the collaboration with the University of Zaragoza, the companies in the surrounding area and technology centers, makes ZLC a veritable hub for the knowledge transfer and growth of our community. We are called to be decisive, and the contribution of this center is essential in an objective shared by the public authorities, institutions and business agents of our community alike.
Pilar AlegríaMinistry of Innovation, Research and University, Government of Aragón.President of Zaragoza Logistics Center

This has been a particularly eventful year. ZLC celebrates 15 years since its creation and continues to preserve both its mission and the values for which it was conceived. It seems so distant now, back in 2003, full of ambitions that seemed unthinkable then. However, over the years, ZLC has established itself as a leading education and research center. Coinciding with this anniversary, ZLC is opening new facilities at the EXPO headquarters in 2018, keeping a keen eye directly on the new business heart of Zaragoza. All this from my personal retrospective, as it has also been a year since my part in this great challenge constituting the direction of a center with a projection as wide as that of ZLC.Nowadays, companies are surrounded by uncertainty when it comes to facing new challenges of the future, which go hand in hand with technological development and the consequent updating of knowledge. Hence, many cutting-edge companies bet on diversity in the face of such uncertainty, expanding their capabilities to other areas. This drive towards diversity has also been exploited during this year at ZLC, incorporating the first class of the newly created Blended and 3C programs, which have arisen as a direct result of the needs of the current logistic market.
Susana ValDirector, Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC)
TALENT HUB FOR SUPPLY CHAIN
Today’s globalized market requires an increasingly in-depth knowledge of logistics and supply chain management; ZLC continues to thrive in a privileged position within the MIT Global Scale Network, with an indisputable international positioning, relying on the two main pillars of the entity, notably quality and excellence in education and research. Year upon year, both pillars are oriented towards the needs of students, companies and institutions and ZLC achieves this performance thanks to the superb talent, professionalism and teamwork of the staff. This year, ZLC has added two new professors to this talent hub, providing the faculty with new skills in the area of artificial intelligence and network design, as well as collaborative logistics. As a result of the internationalization of our activity, ZLC continues to extend its network of contacts through congresses, forums, alumni and new contacts in companies. Hand in hand with this, ZLC is continually generating and disseminating research results at regional level, thus strengthening the Aragonese companies and maintaining levels of progress and development.During 2018 ZLC has approached entities, organizations, regional and international companies, with the main objective of consolidating its network and generating added value that could affect the entire industrial fabric. These constitute the values and the main mission of ZLC and thus we will continue working, promoting the transformation of the uncertainty of companies and students, and providing opportunities for a brighter future.

The 3 Continent (3C) program is a uniquely global master’s degree that gives graduates the problem-solving and change leadership skills they need to become global supply chain leaders. Students gain exposure to an international environment by studying in three continents: Asia, Europe and North America. The program prepares graduates to navigate an intensely competitive commercial landscape that is evolving rapidly due to globalization.
The blended master’s degree refers to a new option that has been developed by MIT that allows learners to combine the MITx MicroMasters credential with a 3 week stay at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one semester at Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC) in Zaragoza, Spain and a capstone project. The MicroMasters credential requires candidates to pass five rigorous online courses in supply chain management and a proctored comprehensive exam.

“The PhD summer academy at ZLC was an excellent avenue to develop myself as an
academic within the supply chain sector. An intensive course conducted by academics
who are leaders in their respective fields in SCM is ideal for any budding academic.
Not only in broadening SCM knowledge, but also in learning emerging trends in SCM and publishing in top-tiered SCM
journals. Moreover, learning alongside PhD students and early career academics from
different countries exploring different niche areas in SCM broadened my horizons as
a young academic. I strongly recommend any doctoral candidate in SCM to invest
two weeks of their time here - they will not regret it”.

ZLC is located at “Dinamiza business park”, designed to meet the space and work needs of companies after the EXPO Zaragoza 2008. Dinamiza was designed as a window into the future for Zaragoza, in a unique area that operates as the city’s economic and leisure motor. Near the city centre, it occupies a strategical location by the AVE high-speed train station and the main road network, with a connection to the Airport. Also, it has become the economic business centre of Zaragoza where the City of Justice and the Aquarium are located, next to the Convention Centre, parks and sports areas. There are restaurants, hotels and a medical centre, with almost 3,000 employees working in different companies.
In 2008 the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science officially recognized ZLC as a Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO). ZLC is a member of the National Center of Excellence for research in the area of logistics and supply chain management, CNC LOGISTICA, that was created in 2006 by ZLC together with three other institutions. The participation of this center puts ZLC in a leading role to define and coordinate research, development and innovation initiatives across Spain in logistics and supply chain management.ZLC has the continued support of local savings bank Ibercaja and the European Social Fund in its activities.
ZLC has been awarded The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) by the European Commission. The ECHE provides the general quality framework for European and international cooperation activities, which a higher education institution (HEI) may carry out within the Erasmus+ Program. The award of an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education is a pre-requisite for all institutions wishing to participate in Erasmus+ and learning mobility of individuals and/or cooperation for innovation and good practices under the Program. The Charter is awarded for the full duration of the Program (2014-2020).
