Photos step

here

writin

We have left behind another eventful year as tim

e has flowed sw

iftly past us. With

each event, we experienced som

etimes hope and som

etimes despair for the future

of Turkey and the world.

Of course, it is very exciting to live in a country w

here you can see waves of

global change and the local dynamics of that change follow

ing one after the other. But it w

as equally stressful. As you know

, we continued to undergo a revolutionary

process of transformation tow

ard a more dem

ocratic, free, pluralistic, civilian andself-confident nation in 2010, just as w

e did in 2009.Taking 195 m

ilitary officers, including many retired and active-duty generals

and comm

anders, to court on Dec. 16 for plotting to overthrow

the government in

the Balyoz (Sledgehamm

er) case was one of the m

ost significant developments to

make its m

ark on 2010. A picture show

ing so many generations taking the defen-

dants' seats in the Silivri courtroom w

as a considerable and promising indicator of

the progress Turkey's democracy and legal system

has made. Like this trial, the 58

percent “yes” votes cast in the referendum on the constitutional am

endment pack-

age held on Sept. 12, the 30th anniversary of the military coup of Sept. 12, 1980,

served as the biggest blow to m

ilitary tutelage.C

ourt regulations prevented photos of the Sledgehamm

er trial from being

taken. Thus, we felt great regret as photojournalists w

ere unable to capture thathistoric picture w

itnessed in the courtroom. Though regrettable, this w

as yet anoth-er opportunity for us to see that photography is an integral part of journalism

. I amcertain that if a single photo from

that room w

ere published in papers or aired onTV

, we w

ould see that Turkey's current change and transformation, w

hich would

require several volumes of books to properly depict, could actually be squeezed into

a single photo frame. O

f course, we w

ould also recognize the magnitude of pho-

tography's expressive capacity.The year 2010 w

as also an important w

atershed in the ongoing historic processof change. W

e journalists monitored this process closely and tried to provide accu-

rate and reliable information, not only for today's readers and political analysts but

also for the historians of the future. As these articles and new

s stories made their

mark in history every day, w

e always depended on photos as the m

ost reliable doc-um

entation of these events. Every good or bad incident that occurred in this coun-try and the w

orld during 2010 was translated into an everlasting and precious doc-

ument each tim

e a photojournalist pressed the shutter release. We published these

invaluable visual documents in new

spapers for our readers throughout the year.N

ow, w

e also want to present these photo-docum

ents of significant historical valueto you in the form

of an album.

I would like to express m

y deepest thanks to the photojournalists, editors anddesigners w

ho generously helped in preparing the Today's Zam

an Photo Chronicle

2010 for us and I hope that they live the rest of their professional lives in a world

where they can take photos of happiness and beauty.

Please enjoy.

Eyes of the w

orld

A photojournalist is a visual chronicler. H

e records everything. He looks at

streets, neighborhoods and cities with curiosity. H

e looks for the extraordinary inthe ordinary events in his country and around the w

orld. H

e does not refrain from seeing w

hat should be, but he is mostly in pursuit

of what shouldn't be. H

e goes to a political gathering or a football field or a rallyin order to find new

and different things. He takes part in events but never as

fanatically. He is never a m

ere watcher. H

e reacts to anything that goes wrong

and records it. He cannot ignore it.

His shots are not his m

emoirs, but exceptional m

oments. If he is in the right

spot at the right time and if he presses the shutter at the right m

oment, then he

fulfills his job. A photojournalist is the one w

ho persistently and patiently calls toattention w

hat is attempted to be forgotten. H

e brings to light what w

as leftuntouched or kept hidden in dark room

s. O

ur annual almanac "Photos Taking N

ote of Time" holds a m

irror up to theyear 2010, offering you snapshots from

the whole year.

Thus, the almanac bears traces of the steps taken for stability in the M

iddleEast and the Balkans. W

ith sadness, its pages reflect the human tragedies and the

humanitarian and relief w

ork after the flood in Pakistan. The photos of the holyjourney around A

rafat, Mecca and M

edina call everyone to an atmosphere of

peace. The FIFA W

orldCup that sent w

aves of excitement all across the w

orldw

ith the exotic sound of vuvuzelas is portrayed in colorful photos, while the

World Basketball C

hampionship that brought second place to our national bas-

ketball team is teem

ing with unforgettable m

oments in our alm

anac. You can also find the story of how

world-renow

ned photographer SteveM

cCurry looked for traces of his fam

ed photo of the Afghan girl, know

n by some

as a modern M

ona Lisa, in the streets of Sultanahmet -- w

hich to his amazem

enthe found reproduced in m

yriad formats by people w

ho had taken it to heart. Youcan also find proof that the digital age has really started as you see how

Ara G

ülerposed for the 26th fram

e in the last 36-exposure roll produced by Kodak. A

yearhas ended, but the responsibilities of photojournalists never cease to exist. Thisalm

anac is the modest proof of this.
