“HALACHA OF THE WEEK” BY: RABBI MORDECHAI TORCZYNER
We have a portable fish tank, which we move around from time to time. May we move it on Shabbos? Animals which have no function are muktzeh on Shabbos. [Halachic authorities note that service animals are a separate class.] A fish tank is considered a base for the fish, and so a fish tank is as muktzeh as the creatures it contains. There is also a second halachic concern involved in handling animals, in that one may not ride on animals or otherwise make use of their bodies. Many halachic authorities agree that the above two concerns are not relevant in the case of a fish tank. Fish are meant to be admired and portable tanks are normally moved, and so there is no concern for muktzeh. There certainly is no concern for "riding" a fish. Therefore, many authorities permit moving a portable tank. Rav Ovadia Yosef permits moving the tank only where the fish are in danger of pain or death, such as from cold or direct sunlight. First Aliyah: (25:25-26) Why was Esav named by two people whereas Yaakov was named by one person? Second Aliyah: (26:12) What is the connection between Rivka being discovered as Yitzchak’s wife and Yitzchak’s success as a farmer? Third Aliyah: What is the significance of all the detail regarding Yitzchak’s digging of wells? Fourth Aliyah: (26:29) What do the words “atta ‘atta” (lit.: you, now) mean? Fifth Aliyah: Why did Rivka have to play a trick on Yitzchak instead of just telling him directly that he should bless Yaakov and not Esav? Sixth Aliyah: Why did Yitzchak want to specifically bless Esav and not Yaakov? Seventh Aliyah: (28:6) Why didn’t Yitzchak tell Esav not to marry a Canaanite girl as he had done with Yaakov?

SHORT VORTSHORT VORT Commentaries say that Rivka was unaware that she was carrying twins; she thought the turmoil within her existed in a single baby - THIS had her very upset; she was somewhat calmed by the Divine message of her carrying twins. Another commentator suggests that Rivka knew she'd have twins but did not see the benefit of bringing a Yaakov into this world if it meant also having an Eisav. Part of the reply to her question "why do I need this?" is that her conclusion was wrong. It can be suggested that the Divine message to Rivka, was that even though there will great tension and friction between the descendants of the twins she was carrying, Yaakov and Eisav, there will be an example of a Roman (from Eisav) and a Jew who will truly get along. The deadline to register for BAYT’s first ever “Iron Blech” Cholent Cook-off contest on Shabbos, December 8th is less than 2 weeks away and spaces are filling up fast! Do you have a beef with people who don’t appreciate your cholent? Can you meat the challenge? Whether you call it cholent, chulent, arisa, chamim, melange or stew, don't chicken or veg out on the chance to enter your favourite recipe, and maybe to win the title. Contestants must sign up by November 26th. Tasting judges (we've reduced the fee to only $10) – must register through the website by November 30th. So what are you waiting for? Motzei Shabbos at the Movies – December 22, 2012 Come to our third annual mini-film festival, featuring short films from the Maaleh Film School in Jerusalem. December 22nd, at 8:00pm. These are merely precautions we have put in place to make sure that everyone’s mind can be at ease when inside the building and our focus can be on our tefillos for Acheinu Kol Bais Yisroel. May Hashem hear our prayers and keep our brethren in Israel safe.
