January is always a different kind of busy for the Zachys buying team. For the first three months of the year (although a quiet time for many), we are insanely busy organizing, tasting, and purchasing all the new-release vintages for the months to follow. I would say that at least 65% of the year’s buying decisions are made in the first quarter.

The driving force for this “No Frills” Gazette:

1. We are so crazed tasting and buying; there are just not enough hours in the day to sit down and focus on a content-heavy catalogue. To do it right, we want to write new articles and stories, which takes time we just don’t have.

2. Quite simply...WE CAN’T HAVE IT ALL!!! It would be nice if we were collectors, but we are sellers of fine wine. Thus carrying more than one (and in some cases multiple) vintage at a time can create significant operational difficulties, and is not efficient for maintaining a streamlined inventory. So, as much as it pains my buyers (myself

included), I have asked them to identify the last-of-bottles and wines where there is no more to get and CLEAR THEM OUT!!!

So, this Gazette is all about the WINE and the PRICE as we anticipate HUGE movement on the wine that follow in the next 38 pages.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Take the time to read the following pages VERY CLOSELY as there are some INSANE DEALS in here. We are looking to rip the Band-Aid off quickly as letting go of wines at such low prices is going to be truly painful. (Many the lowest prices in America!)

These offers are a one-shot deal...when they are sold out...THEY ARE SOLD OUT.

We look forward to hearing back from you in the next couple of weeks. My advice is simple, DON’T HESITATE!

All my best,

Andrew

P.S. Don’t forget that FREE SHIPPING on all spirits will be running through February 28th!

* Prices in the Winter Gazette are good from 2/07/13 until 11:59pm EST 2/28/13 or while supplies last. Sale items are

drastically reduced net prices off the regular bottle price. No

additional discounts can be applied. These prices cannot

be applied to previous purchases. Not responsible for

typographical errors. Prices subject to change without notice.

Bubbles Blowout...Just Because I Can!

I don’t usually step in and trump Jeremy in his departments, but we made a very significant purchase this past holiday season for a large corporate client that fell through. I won’t have any issue selling through these bubbles in the long run, but I am an impatient guy! AM

CHARLES ELLNER | BTL $

Brut Prestige 2001 (90WE) {#355811} ....................................35.25Vintage Champagne for only $35????!!!! “This vintage champagne has a generous and persistent mousse, and a bright gold color. Cuvee de Reserve Brut NV (91WS) {#135585} ......................29.85“Lightly honeyed, with a smoky base note, this finely balanced version offers refined texture and flavors of apricot, black cherry, brioche and candied orange zest. Hints of anise and ginger echo on the finish...91.” WS 12/12.

Cuvee Seduction Brut 2001 (92WE) {#365722} .....................34.99“Ripe, fruity Champagne, with a great toast element that creates a rich and structured wine. Rosé Brut NV (91BH) {#135586} .............................................33.00“This attractively scented effort aromatically resembles a true rosé as there is almost no yeast influence to the overtly fruity nose. As with the other wines in the Ellner range, this offers a great deal of effervescence with fine flavor authority and complexity on the lingering and somewhat curiously for a Champagne, a mouth coating finish...91.” BH 1/12.

Chateau de L’Aulee Brut Intense NV {#361826} ....................10.50“Where have you been all my life? Between refreshing and fat, refined and lascivious. Love this wine...89+.” SWJ 9/12.

Henriot Cuvee de Enchanteleurs Brut1990 (94WS) (1.5L) {#330816} ..........................................296.00“The texture lends elegance and the acidity provides structure, setting the stage for opulent flavors of coffee, roasted almond, citrus and vanilla. Fine intensity and balance, with a long finish. It’s reaching its peak and should hold there for some years...94.” WS 11/05.

Jacques Selosse Brut Initial NV (95WA/95SWJ) {#137515} ...129.00“...absolutely impeccable...What is more impressive: the definition of aromas and flavors, or is it the wine’s sublime texture? The Initial is remarkable for its nuance, clarity and overall sense of harmony...Juicy apricots, peaches, flowers, crushed rocks and spices meld together on the seamless, utterly impeccable finish...95.” WA 11/11.

Ployez Jacquemart Liesse d Harbonville1996 (94WS) {#350242} .....................................................122.00“Mouthwatering, with finely detailed texture and a harmonious array of Fuji apple, pineapple, vanilla, brioche and grated coconut flavors. A mineral base note drives this home and lingers on the finish of coffee liqueur...94.” WS 12/11.

Tribaut-Schloesser Brut NV (90WS) {#331320} .....................20.50“The refined texture sets the pace for lemon, apple and bread dough flavors in this firm, elegant bubbly, which is dry in style, with an austerity that begs food. There’s nice balance and length...90.” WS 2009.

Ulysse Collin Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut NV 2007 (94WA) {#350243} .......................................................59.95“It is a big, mouth-filling wine loaded with extravagant Chardonnay fruit. BORDEAUXBordeaux is by far the greatest large volume producing wine region

in the world. There is more fi ne wine produced in Bordeaux than

anywhere else.

To kick off 2013, we have surveyed our stocks and the stocks of our

suppliers to bring you some of the best pricing possible on wines that

have a bit of age to them. Focusing on the 2008, 2007, 2006 and

2005 vintages, with a few things from further back, we have compiled

a selection of wines that are perfect to enjoy now and as is the case

with classic Bordeaux, only getting better with age. Bordeaux does not

have to cost triple digits; and these pages are fi lled with plenty of wines

aggressively priced below $20 per bottle, and with a wide selection of

wines from established well-known Chateaux around only $30 per bottle!

“What I like best about Zachys is your customer service team, like

Georgette. She e-mailed me advising to wait for better weather

to ship my wine to my offi ce in South Florida and offered climate

controlled free storage. She is also as pleasant over the phone.

I have purchased from other on line wine stores and no one has

offered this kind of service and recommendations. Employees like

Georgette make a difference. Cheers!” Tony 11/12.

The Winemakers’ Collection:Denis Dubourdieu No.2 2006 (91WA) {#142917} ..............23.95“There are 5,000 cases of the reasonably priced 2006 Cuvee Numero 2. A classic Bordeaux...with sweet aromas of black currants infused with tobacco leaf, loamy, earthy undertones, spice box, and cedar. With sweet, noble tannin, medium to full body, and outstanding concentration...The Winemaker’s Selection is a creative project with a different world class winemaker each year producing a wine from a specific parcel of vines at Chateau d’Arsac. The debut vintage in 2005, Cuvee Numero 1, was made by Michel Rolland, and this second offering was produced by the famed professor of oenology at Bordeaux University, Denis Dubourdieu. The third wine, the 2007, will be fashioned by Italy’s renowned Andrea Franchetti. This is intriguing in many ways. It is the same terroir, but each wine producer is given carte blanche authority to do whatever they wish. BURGUNDYBurgundy, Burgundy, Burgundy…how we love you…how we despise you!!!

As a Burgundy lover, you know how seductive and alluring the wines

can be, while at the same time how precocious and shy they might be

the next day. Additionally, in Burgundy, rarely is there a singular wine

made in abundance. Yet every producer seems to make an enormously

wide array of wines. As a result there is plenty of Burgundy to be had, it

is just in limited quantities.

Many great wines are overlooked at fi rst release because everyone is

chasing a handful of singular wines. That leads us to this year’s fi rst

Gazette of 2013, where we have focus on an amazing selection of great

wines that have just been overlooked. We have taken our prices and

further discounted them to make tremendous deals!

This is a beauty to drink over the next 10-15 years...90-92.” WA 10/08.

Chateauneuf du Pape Combe des Fous (Clos St Jean)2009 (98RR/96WA) {#340006} ...........................................140.00“About as elegant and seamless as Châteauneuf-du-Pape gets, the brilliant 2009 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous is a blend of 60% old vine Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Vaccarese. While the Grenache is aged entirely in tank, the Syrah is aged in demi-muids. Sporting massive aromatics of incense, meat juice, flowers, spice, and loads of licorice-drenched red fruits that literally leap from the glass, the wine is full-bodied and simply perfectly put together. Seamless, very rich, and yet not heavy or cumbersome in the least, this firms up beautifully on the finish and highlights very fine, polished tannin. Quite possibly the wine of the vintage, this is heavenly stuff that should age effortlessly for two decades...98.” RR 9/11.

“As an avid shopper of wine online, I was very satisfi ed with the

experience I had with Zachys.com. Ultimately price and shipping

promotions drive my decision to purchase above all else assuming

there are no issues with the wine upon delivery.” Eric 11/12.

zITALYFor this unique Zachys Gazette, I have chosen to divide Italy to

3 sub-categories that best suit the trends and buying categories that

our selection of wines always seems to follow. The categories lack

“fancy” titles but simply are groupings of action points and preferences

of our clients.

The categories are:

1. Super-Duper “Sub $25” Values: This title kind of speaks for itself.

Who isn’t looking for that great “nightly” bottle of wine that will over

deliver for the price.

2. “Sweet Spot”: Ever since the 1997 vintage hit the market the

lion’s share of our Italian wine sells in the $25–$40 per bottle range.

Whether it is our diversity of selection or simply what our clients like

most, this is clearly the SWEET SPOT and the most sought after

category in the store.

3. Premium Plus & The “Trophies”: Defi nitely NOT everyday wine but

great collectibles for the cellar

That’s it boiled down into 3 simple categories. Take the time to read

these 5 pages VERY closely. I have put some real steals in here!!!

SOUTHERN HEMISPHEREArgentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa cannot

be considered “frontier” wine regions anymore, especially given their

storied winemaking histories. Let’s just say that these fi ve countries

are here to stay. What was once a go-to for inexpensive bulk wine is

becoming so much more. Wineries owned by families for generations

are crafting wines that seem to get better with every passing vintage.

Vineyard managers are coaxing the very best out of their soil and

winemakers are crafting unique blends and terroir-expressive wines

across all price points. The world is starting to notice regions like

Australia’s Eden Valley or Argentina’s Patagonia not as curiosities, but

as legitimate producers of high quality wine.

Whether your favorite is Yarra Valley Chardonnay or Casablanca

Valley Syrah (or even if you’ve never heard of either), we have plenty

from which to choose. With drastically reduced prices on all wines

in this section, we’re determined to “pave the way” for our clients to

experiment with premier selections from the most exciting wine regions

in the world.

We’ve come a very long way since the days when Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa were only known for Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinotage. Though those three varietals are largely responsible for bringing international attention to the “Lands Down Under,” they are only the very

tip of the massive iceberg that is “Down Under Wine.” We now see an ever-increasing demand for the unique, off-beat, and fascinating artisan wines; now critics and connoisseurs are dubbing these wine regions as the most exciting in the world in terms of quality and creativity. You can safely bet that we are following them very closely! This list contains some of our favorite values, and features a wide range of varietals from top

appellations throughout the three nations. Combined with an epic 2012 vintage on its way from Australia, an incredible set of new releases from South Africa, AND the booming success of non-Sauvignon Blanc varietals in New Zealand, it’s safe to say “Down Under” has nowhere to go but up!

Chile and Argentina have achieved massive commercial success over the last few years. Chile has cemented itself as a steady producer of solid value wines at nearly unbeatable prices. Argentina has made Malbec a household name and exports more wine to the USA than any other country. Both countries have done a phenomenal job of getting value wines into American wine shop shelves and homes. But there is so much more to both countries than just the numbers. The quality of their wine has only increased with every passing vintage, as the vines get older and a constant influx of winemaking talent further unlocks the potential of South American terroir. We are seeing more and more instances of “good wine for the money”

becoming flat-out great wine. What follows is a list of outstanding selections from Latin America...they just so happen to be available at a great price!

AUSTRALIA’S RISING STAR—EDEN ROAD WINES“Our desire, capability and energy are channeled into every aspect

of the winemaking process from the selection and management of

vineyards through to the attention to detail we devote to winemaking:

this is our Road to Eden.” - Winery

Picked from estate-owned vineyards in New South Wales in the hills around the city of Canberra, Eden Road’s Syrah/Shiraz grapes come from climates much higher in elevation and cooler than the majority of Australia. The resulting wines are elegant, focused, and complex, and each displays a distinct character reflective of its respective terroir. These wines are by no means typical oak- and fruit-driven Australian Shiraz, nor do they attempt to mimic Rhone Valley Syrah. MARQUIS CALIFORNIA

Zachys has been family run in Scarsdale for over 65 years, the brick and mortar storefront at 16 E. Parkway is truly a piece of Westchester iconography. We are continually blessed to maintain this storefront and strengthen our ties to the Scarsdale and Westchester communities.

As we continue to grow and adapt to the ever changing world around us, one thing has remained, Zachys commitment to community. Here’s a quick look at what Team Zachys accomplished in 2012 outside the walls of 16 E. Parkway:

John Dawson Medical Fund & The TOUGHMAN Triathlon – When our esteemed colleague, John Dawson, was diagnosed with prostate cancer Zachys (and so many clients who have interacted

with John) rallied around him to support his treatments. Total Raised $35,000

3 B’s Wine Dinner & Westchester Triathlon – On September 11th, Zachys hosted the 3 B’s Wine Dinner for Strength For Sydney to benefit the SMS Research Foundation. In addition, Andrew headed a team of 6 local friends at the Westchester Triathlon for Team Sydney. Total Raised $40,000

Westchester Running Festival – This year we had 42 of Zachys finest compete in both the ¼ and ½ marathon events at the Westchester Running Festival. Combined we walked, ran and danced, some of us literally, across the finish line in White Plains proudly representing Team Zachys and 14 charities that we hold near and dear. Total Raised $6,500

To close out the year, Andrew flew to Las Vegas to compete in the LV Marathon with all proceeds donated to his race going straight back to Super-Storm Sandy relief here in New York. Total Raised $7,000

It was a BIG year for us in 2012, and it has only inspired us to do MORE in 2013.

Stay Tuned!!!

Zachys In The Community: 2012 Recap

Over $89,000 raised for charitable

Pinot Gris Heimbourg Selection des Grains Nobles2008 (375ml) (96WS) {#352098} .........................................68.00“Ripe mango, pineapple and star fruit notes play off just a hint of fresh, earthy mushroom in this vibrant version, which shows zesty, enlivening acidity that provides lots of muscle, though there’s a lightly mouthcoating texture that’s like a layer of silk on the palate...96.” WS 10/10.

Zachys Emails Are SO MUCH DIFFERENT Than Others...Are You Seeing Them?

So, what makes Zachys offers so much different than the rest?

• We work VERY hard to tailor our email offers based on your spending history and preference…so you only see what you like.• We leverage our 35+ years of relationships/influence in the wine world to get unique offers out (Many of which are available on emails only)

• Our offers are not simply a regurgitation of the “same-old-same-old,” but rather an opportunity to get the inside track on new releases ahead of the competition.

A lot of thought and effort goes into our offers, so that we are not like everybody else. We want your email experience to be as satisfactory as if you were here in the shop and we were working with you on a one-on-one basis. But don’t just take our word for it...

“The emails we receive are a great way to alert customers to good deals on special wines, and a way of learning about new and well-priced

wines from regions we’ve learned to enjoy. While I realize this doesn’t cover every wine available, it’s a good way to selectively learn of new

wines, and build up a personal database of things we know we’ll enjoy. (Very useful for ordering off wine lists in restaurants!)” Ross 1/13.

If you’re “missing out,” please contact us at [email protected] so we can be sure you are getting the full “Zachys Experience.” AM

of which are not very mainstream. In fact, a few of them are

WAY OFF the beaten path. We love them, but we have to part

with them as our goal is to fi nd good wines homes. These are

“our babies” and we are doing all we can to fi nd good homes

beyond the Zachys cellars.

champagne selection, relatively short shipping distance and ease of use of your website.

Service was effi cient and friendly. “ Greg 11/12.
