Welcome to Messiah! Whether you’re a member, a returning guest, or maybe

this is your first time at Messiah, we welcome you to this time of worship. During

our time together, we hope that you experience the presence and love of God in

a profound and life-changing way! May the music we share stir you, may the

prayers we offer comfort you, and may the proclaimed Word of God challenge

you to live with a new passion and purpose. Again, we are honored that you

have chosen to worship here today. Let’s give God all glory and praise.

First-Time guests, we invite you to look through the “Welcome to Messiah”

brochure found in the attendance card slot on the pew in front of you. If you

have any questions, please talk to an usher.

Once we enter God’s House, we pray that our hearts are changed, and that His

perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the

beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find

the Spirit’s peace that passes all human understanding; that we learn more about

Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.

If music is being played, we invite you to open the Bible in front of you, and focus

on His Word, or spend time in quiet prayer.

If a song is being sung, words are provided on the screens at the front of the

sanctuary. We invite you to sing along, or meditate on the song’s message.

O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You;

my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.

Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.

So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:1-4

Luther's Morning Prayer

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have

kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this

day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into

Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel

be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE PRESERVICE PRAISE “Soul on Fire”

THE GREETING

THE OPENING SONG Praise Awaits You”

THE INVOCATION

P: We celebrate in victory today in the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in

it!

THE CONFESSION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS

P: Beloved, Jesus said, “I will be with you always.” Let us take Him at His

word, and come into His presence. Let us share our great need of Him as

we confess our sins and ask for forgiveness.

C: I confess to almighty God all my sins with which I have offended You,

especially the sin of trying to go it alone without You. On my own, I

am weak, and sin so easily makes me forget Your Word and will for

my life. I have sinned in many ways by evil thoughts, words, and

“The early Christian Church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 We are a "singing church,” so we follow the advice of the Apostle Paul, as found in Colossians 3:16, to "teach and admonish one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9 Rom. 3:23)

11:00am Worship Sixth

Chorus: Praise awaits You, O God, as Your people gather.

We rejoice in Your Name.

Praise awaits You, O God, hear Your children singing.

We exalt You today; we exalt You today. (repeat)

Blessèd are those who sing Your praises;

They will be filled with Your goodness and joy,

You are the hope of all creation.

You give us salvation, You gave us Your Son;

And we will worship You now. Chorus

Even though sin has overwhelmed us,

You have been faithful, O Lord, to forgive.

Only through Christ we find redemption.

He gave us salvation. He gave us His life;

And we will worship You now. Chorus

deeds. Because of Your merciful death on the cross and in the power

of Your resurrection from the dead, let me hear from You the words

of Your grace and forgiveness and new life. Amen.

P: In keeping with His promise, the Lord sends another helper to deliver His

own words of forgiveness. So now, as a called and ordained servant of

Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

THE SONG OF PRAISE “Your Grace Is Enough”

The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) We respond to God’s forgiveness with a song of praise, expressing our joy and thanks to God!

Great is Your faithfulness Oh God. You wrestle with the sinner's heart.

You lead us by still waters into mercy, and nothing can keep us apart.

So, remember Your people, remember Your children,

Remember Your promise, Oh God.

Chorus: Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough.

Your grace is enough for me.

Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough.

Your grace is enough for me.

Great is Your love and justice God. You use the weak to lead the strong.

You lead us in the song of Your salvation,

And all Your people sing along.

So remember Your people, remember Your children.

Remember Your promise, Oh God. Chorus

So remember Your people, remember Your children

Remember Your promise, Oh God.

Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough.

Your grace is enough for me.

Your grace is enough; Heaven reaching down to us.

Your grace is enough for me. God I see Your grace is enough.

I'm covered in Your love. Your grace is enough for me. For me.

THE COLLECT

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: God our Father, You protect Your children from all that would harm our

salvation. Give us the courage of faith and love toward You, that we

have boldness to live for You and confess Your holy name before all;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Acts 17:22-28 22So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens,

I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23For as I passed

along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar

with this inscription, ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship

as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24The God who made the world and

everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in

temples made by man, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he

needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath

and everything. 26And he made from one man every nation of mankind

to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods

and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27that they should seek God,

in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet

he is actually not far from each one of us, 28for “‘In him we live and

move and have our being.’”

THE EPISTLE LESSON 1 Peter 3:13-18 13Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?

14But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be

blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15but in your hearts

regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense

to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; 16yet do

it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when

you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may

be put to shame. 17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should

be God’s will, than for doing evil. 18For Christ also suffered once for sins,

the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being

put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. We call this prayer a "Collect" because it collects the themes of the lessons and puts them into a prayer. The First Lesson is taken from a book of the New Testament, and is found on page 726 in the pew Bible. It coordinates with the Gospel Lesson. The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Paul’s letters. Today’s lesson was written by the apostle Peter, and is found on page 1016 in the pew Bible. We may read through an entire book over several weeks.

THE GOSPEL SONG “Change My Heart, O God”

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 14:15-21 15[Jesus said:] “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you

forever, 17even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,

because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells

with you and will be in you. 18“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come

to you. 19Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will

see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20In that day you will know that

I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21Whoever has my

commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves

me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to

him.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God

WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth

and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all

worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten,

not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things

were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from

heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and

was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again

according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the

right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge

both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who

proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and

The Gospel Song may change weekly or the ordinary verse is from John 6:68. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us. The Holy Gospel is selected according to the season or festival Sunday of the Church Year, and is found on page 901 in the pew Bible. We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise and then by professing our faith. The Nicene Creed was first adopted in A.D. 325 at the Council of Nicea. The Roman Emperor Constantine had convened the Council of Nicea in an attempt to unify the Christian church with one doctrine, especially on the issues of the Trinity and the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ. We are confessing our personal faith.

Change my heart, O God, make it ever true.

Change my heart, O God, may I be like You.

You are the Potter, I am the clay.

Mold me and make me; this is what I pray.

Change my heart, O God, make it ever true.

Change my heart, O God, may I be like You.

the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the

prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for

the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE CHILDREN’S TIME

THE SERMON HYMN “Alleluia! Sing to Jesus” LSB 821

The Sermon Hymn may coordinate with the Gospel lesson, or with the pastor’s sermon topic.

8

THE SERMON “Loving Like Jesus” John 14:15

1. It gives our life purpose.

2. It requires sacrifice.

3. It changes lives.

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S TEACHING “Alleluia! Sing to Jesus” LSB 821

THE OFFERING PRAYER

WE HONOR OUR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES “Find Your Wings”

The Sermon applies God’s Word to our lives and helps to equip us to fulfill our baptismal calling to new life in Christ. After the Offering Prayer, we ask all of those present to please fill out an attendance card. If you are a guest with us today, please fill out the front and back of the card. If you have any special prayer requests, you will find a space for this on the back of the card. Thank you. We present our gifts to God to symbolize the offering of ourselves to the Lord, saying thank You to God, and showing we trust Him to supply all our needs. (Rom. 12:1)

Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; His the scepter, His the throne;

Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone.

Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion

Thunder like a mighty flood:

“Jesus out of ev’ry nation has redeemed us by His blood.”

It's only for a moment you are ours to hold.

The plans that heaven has for you will all too soon unfold.

So many different prayers we'll pray for all that you might do,

But most of all we'll want to know you're walking in the truth.

And if we never told you, we want you to know As we watch you grow-

Chorus: We pray that God would fill your heart with dreams,

And that faith gives you the courage

To dare to do great things.

We’re here for you whatever this life brings.

So let our love give you roots and help you find your wings.

THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P: Gracious Lord, we praise You for the blessings You bestow on us daily. We

feel Your love and care all around us. We come before You now humbly in

prayer, laying our concerns at Your feet. May you grant to us what we truly

need, forgiveness, life, and salvation, through Your Son Jesus Christ, our

Lord.

C: Give to each of us a zeal for studying and learning Your Word. Bless

and give the guidance of Your Holy Spirit to those who preach and

teach, so that together we can joyfully proclaim that Jesus is our Lord

and our God.

P: We ask for Your protection for those who are battling the coronavirus.

Strengthen the healthcare workers and those afflicted. Grant them your

protection and healing, and return them safely to their families.

C: Strengthen our faith in Jesus, that we may know the fullness of joy

and peace that comes from abiding in Your love and truth.

P: O Holy Comforter, be with all Your faithful people, both Christian and Jew,

who suffer discrimination, hatred, violence and death at the hands of the

servants of evil. In all corners of the earth, Your faithful ones are being

targeted for their unwavering faith in You.

C: Strengthen their resolve to stand fast, as they face uncertainty.

Comfort them in their grief for loved ones taken by violence, and place

Your mighty hedge of protection around them.

P: Beginning and the End, You hold the past, the present, and the future.

We give You thanks for our loved ones and for all the saints who have

fallen asleep in Jesus.

C: Grant us faith to follow Jesus during our days of pilgrimage, and bring

us at last to Your kingdom, where You dwell with the saints in

unapproachable light.

P: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your

mercy through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C: Amen.

Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42. Here the congregation, established and gathered by God according to His purpose, agrees together on earth that it may be done for them by the Father in heaven, as prayers, supplications, and thanksgivings are offered for all in authority and all sorts of human need. More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. Please use them for your prayer time this week.

May passion be the wind that leads you through your days,

And may conviction keep you strong, guide you on your way.

May there be many moments that make your life so sweet.

Oh, but more than memories- Chorus

It's not living if you don't reach for the sky.

We'll have tears as you take off but we'll cheer as you fly. Chorus

10

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom

come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our

daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who

trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us

from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

THE BENEDICTION

P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.

The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.

C: Amen.

THE SILENT PRAYER

THE MATTERS OF IMPORTANCE

THE CLOSING SONG “Everlasting God”

The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4) Then follows the Aaronic Benediction in which the Lord recognizes us as His people, putting His name on us, and fulfilling all promises in His name. (Num. 6:24-25 Matt. 18:19-20) You are welcome to take this bulletin home and use it for personal devotions this week. Otherwise, we ask that you return it to an usher. Thank you!

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,

We will wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,

We will wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord. Our God, You reign forever. Our Hope, our Strong Deliverer.

You are the everlasting God, the everlasting God

You do not faint, You won’t grow weary

You’re the defender of the weak-You comfort those in need.

You lift us up on wings like eagles.
