COMPANY BACKGROUND

Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers was formed and incorporated in Ghana in 1994 by a group of Ghanaian professionals in the fields of Engineering ,Management and related services. It was formed to provide technical and management services for the needs of the public and private sectors of the economy in the English speaking West African countries like Liberia , Sierra Leone ,Gambia and other parts of the West African Sub-Region. The services cover infrastructural development, manpower training, maintenance, policy formulation, and empowerment of rural communities for self-sustenance.

During the early period of its incorporation the company did undertake some projects in Ghana notably amongst which are the ff: National feeder roads rehabilitation program(NFRRMP) sponsored by DANIDA/USAID & IFAD, African rural energy enterprise devt Program(AREED) sponsored by UNEP, Small Scale Irrigation development program(SSIDP)- Dordoekorpe Irrigation Scheme sponsored by the AfDB and a host of others. Development of an Export Processing Zone(EPZ) near the Tema harbor- Construction of On-site Infrastructure at the Tema Multi-Purpose Industrial Park (MPIP) sponsored by the IDA of the World bank

The company in 2008 established a branch in Sierra Leone and was engaged in the ff.projects or activities; Businesses Development & Marketing kabala water supply rehabilitation project sponsored by BADEA. Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers has a key staff of about 4 Professional civil/structural Engineers, 1 Geodetic Engineer, an Architect, 4 Technician Engineers and 1 CAD Operators located in all our three(3) offices in Ghana, Sierra Leone and South Africa. There is an Administrative supporting staff of an Accountant, a secretary and other clerical staff.

55% of our staff in the South African office have HDI status . HDI staff are appointed at all levels and functional areas in Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers.. This available human resource provides expertise in a relatively broad range of consultancy services for planning, design and management of many types of engineering projects.

Road, Highway and Airport Geometric Design, Pavement Design and Road RehabilitationWithin Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers, we have specialists with postgraduate academic qualifications and twenty years experience in the full service pertaining to road rehabilitation design and materials. Our senior staff have worked on projects on national freeways, provincial rural roads, urban arterials and residential roads. We also specialise in gravel access roads and developing rural and urban residential townships. Water and Sanitation Systems.Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers are experienced in the provision of the initial stages of water and sanitation projects in rural and urban locations. Previous projects undertaken incorporate bulk water reservoirs, pumped systems and water reticulation. Our team also has extensive experience in the design and implementation of water borne sanitation systems in rural, peri-urban and rural situation. These projects have included a full analysis of methods which maximize labour utilisation and job creation opportunities for the local community.

Community InvolvementAt Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers design is not approached as solely an engineering exercise but is undertaken with a view to making the product conform to the needs of the potential users in terms of design and affordability. The firm has many staff who are experienced in translating engineering design concepts into maximizing sustainable job opportunities for the local community members. Tender Documentation and Contract SupervisionZaathi Engineers & Project Managers utilises the most appropriate forms of contract documentation to suit the specific project undertaken. These include project specifications developed specifically for labour intensive projects, or a combination of plant based and labour based projects, or rapid procurement systems. Conditions of Contract and specifications most often used in RSA include, inter-alia COLTO, SABS 1200, FIDIC or NEC.

Labour Intensive ConstructionZaathi Engineers & Project Managers senior staff has for many years been instrumental in the development of numerous labour enhanced and intensive construction projects in rural and urban areas. We specialize in innovation by adapting traditional construction methodology to maximize the utilisation of labour and creating jobs for people through our previously experienced contractors and consulting engineers. We conduct market research, investment analysis, business plan development & implementation for new business initiatives in all the economic sectors of the African Region notably amongst which are the banking, tourism, real estates, engineering and construction sectors. Etc.

MANAGEMENT & TECHNICAL SUPPORT

The institutional environment in countries where there are significant development challenges, such as poverty, unemployment and a lack of access to basic services is often very challenging. There are often urgent development priorities, under-resourced government structures and all in a dynamic and challenging policy and programme environment. In particular, for the last four years Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers has provided extensive support to the OR Tambo District Municipality in South Africa.

Business PlanningZaathi Engineers & Project Managers has provided management support to the Business Planning and Development Support Unit of the Buffalo City Municipality, Amatole, Chris Hani and OR Tambo DM in South Africa since 2010. This work has involved the actual processing of business plans as well as making a variety of strategic inputs in terms of the business planning process, its integration with the broader project cycle of the Department, training and capacity building and the development of effective appraisal structures at a national and provincial level to support the R1.1billion water services delivery programme of these municipalities.

Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers has significant experience in this regard, particularly in the fields of municipal infrastructure financing and development, low cost housing policy and financial models, water services policy, the implementation and basic services cost recovery and issues related to mortgage repayment by low-income clients.Policy DevelopmentThere is frequently a lack of data on specific subject areas, which is required to support project development and/or design. Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers has a strong record in research and data collection, and can work rapidly and accurately in any environment, including household surveys and the use of community members as surveyors to gather such information.

ResearchZaathi Engineers & Project Managers has undertaken research in the field of water, cost recovery. The majority of this work involved four methods of research: postal questionnaires, literature searches and review, case studies, and personal interviews.

One of the most significant studies undertaken by Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers concentrated on research work on the labor based road construction technology- phase II, for the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, ILO and the Department of Feeder Roads in Ghana

Zaathi Engineers & Project Managers completed three major studies in this regard.
