PRESIDENT'S

(continued on page 4)

Updates

The planning meeting resulted in about 27 events recommended for 2013. And the Area Reps are still sending in more activities. The 1st event is posted on the website. Your Secretary, Ann Devor and Paul Gommel are presenting the Annual Contra Costa Cruise. The Cruise has always been a popular event, and this year it’s 85 miles of fun driving. Save this date March 9th and send Ann an email to RSVP (due: 3/2/13), don’t wait to sign up! Bring an FRS radio if you have one and you’ll need to let Ann know how many people will be in your party for the no-host lunch at Melo’s Pizza. Non ZONC members are welcome to join us at $5.00 per car.

Also posted on the website is ZONC’s new mailing address: PO BOX #184, 21001 San Ramon Valley Blvd., Suite A4, San Ramon, CA 94583. As you know we have a new Treasurer for the 1st time since 2006, and the Petaluma PO Box was just not going to work for our new Treasurer.

So check your ZONC business cards and if you have the newest ones, the old PO Box will be on it. We’ll be getting new ones, but in the meantime let potential ZONC members know what is our correct PO Box address. Membership apps are available on line to print off and mail or paypal is available to join online. You can also renew your membership or add an associate either by mail or online at the website. ZONC business cards are available at any ZONC meeting or event, just see Lyent Hogue, our VP, for your free ZONC business cards.

A few ZONCers know that in June of 1976 ZONC’s ZNews noted that there were over 500 members and that today our membership is 111. We know that there are many potential ZONCers out there that have not yet joined ZONC, so share the driving fun with them!

On April 7th ZONC is invited to the 49th Annual April Fools Rallye by ESCA (Empire Sports Car Association) and RallyeMaster, Bob Jenkins (your ZNews Editor). The Rallye raises money for Canine Companions. It’s a fun 50 mile drive in scenic Sonoma County while following the Rallye instructions to figure out the Rallye gimmicks. This is

This year's route will head out into the Graton, Sebastopol area and into the hills behind Sebastopol, and will run on mostly country back roads, and once again will be an A/B type event.

This year's event will again be an easy beginner type, open to all type vehicles.

You can see the flyer, pictures from past April Fools Rallies, and run a paper A/B rallye, at the Rallies own website at: http://www.sonic.net/~thebeard/

a yearly event for several ZONCers. It takes both a driver and a passenger who will serve as the team’s navigator. Details can be found on the Rallye flyer posted at our website and also at empiresportscar.org.

On April 26-28th is MSA. The West Coast Nationals is a must see event. ZONCer’s who attended last year said that staying in the official hotel allowed them to meet fellow Z enthusiasts from around the country and Canada. Look for details of a ZONC tour in the March ZNews.

Your Executive Board will be reviewing the Constitution for the realities of 2013. One item is that the ZNews is to print a quarterly financial statement. This information has always been available from the Board to any interested member. A summary of the monthly financial activities is available in the minutes from each meeting posted on our website. Also, the Constitution has Standing Committees that may or may not be relevant now. You can find the current Constitution posted on our website: www.zonc.org

Our Next Meeting is February 9th at the Straw Hat Pizza, in Fairfield, at 11:30am. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend as we’ll be working on the planning for the 2013 Annual Car Show to be held again at the Brisbane Marina on July 27th, with a new starting time.

Notice that ZONC is 41 years old? It’s neat to read about ZONC on various websites. The Japanese Nostalgic Car

The Blue 280Z at the 2013 San Jose Auto Show

Article and picture by Linda WilliamsZONC's own Linda Williams had Z Car Garage ask to

borrow her car to put in the San Jose Auto Show. Rob Fuller, owner of Z Car Garage had modified the black

Z car in the picture above and wanted to have hers as a comparison, stock vs modified.

Linda was not able to spend much time at the show, and could not say much about it other than there were several other Zs and Gs there, but she did give us a history of her car.

As for the history on my car......'78 280 Z.I am the second owner and purchased the car Feb 2008

with 16,505 original miles. The previous owner lived in Santa Cruz and was a school teacher in Monterey. Unfortunately she had a fire in their home and had to push the Z out of the garage to prevent any further damage. In doing so, they scraped the rubber bumper on the door frame of the garage and broke the passenger mirror off. They decided that they didn't want to store the car while their home was being restored so they put the car on Craigslist.

I had been looking for about 4 years to find a car that I could part out to bring my 'old' '78 Z (312,000 orig miles) back to a drive-able car since it wouldn't pass smog. When I went to look at the car in Santa Cruz and all I could think is that my dreams have been answered. After my nephew and I looked the car over, it was a "no brainer" and all I could say is "it's sold"! Ironically, my Mom had passed away 2 years prior (minus 1 day) and I know in my head that she had something to do with me finding this gem. Ironically, the guy made the comment that he didn't understand why it hadn't sold

sooner, since it had been listed for about 30 days and later that day, he had 3 cash offers, sight unseen for the car.

The car was originally purchased off the showroom floor of Downtown Datsun in San Jose, CA. and had a few upgrades like the double sun roof windows and the upgraded trim pieces with small reflectors on each end. The car has all the original shipping papers from Japan, as well as the tire tool kit still in the original plastic, original maintenance manual, original dealership key tag and all the accessory books. The carpets are still in great shape and the back deck still has the original foam under the carpeting and the bottom of the front bumper still has the original factory stamp.

As of today, she has about 21,500 miles and still has the original paint.

From the ex TreasurerRoy DornI have had the greatest job for the past seven years as

your club treasurer, the privilege of counting money ..... the clubs money. Counting money is of course enjoyable. I don’t believe I know anyone that doesn’t like counting money. Unfortunately for me ...... and fortunately for you ...... I was not counting my money, I have been counting your money. You, the members of ZONC.

But all joking aside, I have enjoyed watching and being a part of the growth and prosperity of this very special car club. When I was asked to be the treasurer back in 2005 I really had no idea of how car clubs functioned or what my complete duties would be. So, in 2006 I soon found myself involved with a club in a very desperate financial condition. I’m going to leave that statement stand alone with no further comment with the exception of the following:

Ron Fuller, past President (2006 and 2007) who is no longer with us, played a major role in keeping this club glued together. At the risk of forgetting any other members that played a major role with keeping ZONC together in early 2006 I will give you the following members that worked very hard: Ann Devor, Yolanda Atkinson, Alan Hirotani and Bob and Marci Jenkins. Without their support, their knowledge and hard work, my job of counting your money would not have been possible.

Additionally we did have some very special and timely monetary help from Nissan North America. Their contributions to ZONC played a major role in our financial recovery during 2006 and 2007. Their generosity was timely

Roy Dorn watches new Treasurer write his first ZONC check

and will not be forgotten.  So now after seven years of tracking your money I have

decided to step aside. ZONC is in good financial condition. I am stepping down with mixed emotions, because I have enjoyed being your treasurer and part of the decision making team. I could have continued but I really felt that it was time to get someone new and fresh (and maybe a little younger) to step up and join your executive board for this new year 2013. I am very pleased that Wade Warren accepted my nomination to be your new treasurer and that he has been voted to do that job for 2013. I have every confidence that he will continue the careful guardianship of your member funds and bring forward new and fresh ideas for ZONC.

Thank you for letting me serve for the past seven years.

At the January 12th ZONC General Meeting David and Dona Moody volunteered to be the Area Representatives for Mendocino County and were quickly accepted. They live in Redwood Valley, near Ukiah and say there are many Z car owners in the area and plan to recruit them into zonc.

Below is their beautifully restored modified deep blue Z.

This is a well preserved, unrestored car that has always been well taken care of by adults. Always starts, drives solid, shifts well and cruises beautifully. This car needs nothing and the best thing about it is… EVERYTHING WORKS!

I've been using it as a daily driver since I bought it. I have service documents dating back to 1985. This is a great example of an unmodified Z.
