IBM Software Symposium 2006
RFID systems have three main components:
The RFID tag with its own data, functions and physical characteristics
The reader (static or portable) with its own functions and physical characteristics
The host with its own hardware, functions and predefined tasks
Tags also have 3 components and come in a variety of form factors
Active Tags
Passive Tags
Semi-passive tags
IBM Software Symposium 2006
The reader is made up of an antenna and a controller
The controller codes, decodes, checks and stores the data, manages communications with the tags and communicates with the host
The host is the nerve center for the application and forms part of the RFID user's IT system. The host can use the data sent & received from the RFID tags in various business applications
Readers come in a variety of form factors
Entrances/PortalsConveyors across assembly lines, Points of sale, Overhead
MobileHandheld, Wireless or batch, One-piece or two piece tagging

Barcode labels can be printed for less than a penny, and can be read by existing devices whereas low end RFID labels range from $.50 -$3.00 While this is a significant difference, companies who have utilized RFID tagging to monitor manufacturing processes have found that tagging has reduced manufacturing error rates by up to 50%, and have provided a payback of approximately 5X the cost of the tag itself
(Centrid Group, 2001).

Packing Station (Gate)All pallets/cartons (delivered from non Alpha distributor) addressed to the Future Store will be re-packed for RFID enablement. The barcode of each carton is scanned and transferred to a RFID Tag. Cases are assigned to a pallet while packing.
Upon arrival at the Goods Delivery Gate of the Future Store the products are added to the RFID Inventory Management system.
3
Each movement of a carton to/from the store area is reported to RFID Inventory Management system.
4

Dock Door DCThe dock-door UHF RFID reader identifies outgoing pallets and forwards the information to the RFID Inventory Management system
