Setting – Time and Place• Question: What questions (about characters, plot, setting, or

any general wonderings) do you have so far? • Answer : The question I have is that why isn’t, Ana ask Mr.

Loomis about the war and what had happened to cause such a terrible war. Also if is there anybody left in the country to find help and make everything better.

• Summary : Ana found that guy didn’t come out of the tent had a closer look and found him really sick and exposed herself and helped. Ana got to know the guy studied radiation which was killing everyone when the enemy bombed. His name is Mr. Loomis a scientist. And she wrapped him up food and take good care until he got well.

• Connection/Conflict : Ana was thinking if I should help him or not by fighting her own conscience and she did help until Mr. Loomis got well.

• Personal Opinion : I think she did I good job to help a stranger and make him better. Instead of letting Mr. Loomis die. Go to Venn Diagram

Conflict• The main conflict in this book was Man vs. Nature • Question : What is one problem in the book, and how could it be solved? • Answer: The book didn’t tell how the war had started. How this problem

can be solved is by reading more in the book. • Summary: Ana getting to understand the whole war and the radiation

from Mr. Loomis. Ana had thoughts of marrying Mr. Loomis at the age of 17. Mr. Loomis was getting better and figuring out new things like fishing with Ana. But Mr. Loomis got sick and had to go back home. Also Mr. Loomis was acting weird too.

• Connection/Conflict: Ana is being friends with Mr. Loomis or may even marry him in the future. The conflict is Mr. Loomis personality went to see where Ana went and kept looking at her while she was gardening for food.

• Personal Opinion: Persons alone after a year have just acted as if there were no more people hard to believe and getting excited to met each other.

Meaningful Passage

•“I am afraid. Someone is coming. “

I picked this meaningful passage because there might be a sign of still more people could be living. There could still be people left alive after the war. Also because this story was mainly about the “Someone” named Mr. Loomis a scientist. Who was not the nicest person to Ana which “I am Afraid” means to me. Ana was afraid that Mr. Loomis could be bad and then he could do anything to me like as he was making her do so much work, made her stay out of her house, ate food raw, and also he hunted her down trying to shoot her in leg.

Page 11: Z for Zachariah

Symbolism• Question : What symbols do you see in your book? What do they mean? • Answer: A broken heart is the symbol I see in my book. Ana losing her

family and everyone alone with Mr. Loomis whose personality is turning weird and he had grabbed Ana’s hand and didn’t let go. Then after he let go Ana had felt like crying and slept at night in the cave which Mr. Loomis didn’t know about. Broken heart meaning no safe place, hatred, no love, and sadness.

• Connection/Conflict: Mr. Loomis was acting like a show called “Colony” trying to make a permanent spot for living at Burden Hill He had also found a way to make gasoline things work by pumping out gas from gas stations and had plans for hydroelectricity. Mr. Loomis might have a problem with him because he’s acting so weird about the suit and would kill anybody who tried to wear because he thinks the person won’t come back and he’ll just die just as he killed Edward. Mr. Loomis might have a bad side which is selfish.

• Personal Opinion: People should never be selfish because being selfish makes you do real bad stuff that you would never do.

Page 12: Z for Zachariah

Theme• Question : What is your book’s theme? What evidence do

you have to support your thinking? • Answer: Selfish never helps only makes things worse • Connection/Conflict: Mr. Loomis killed Edward for just

trying to find his family over being selfish from being alone. But didn’t find any more people while coming to Burden Hill and now wanted to shot Ana from leaving but just wanted for being alone but because of him being selfish caused him to be alone of the suit. Conflict was Mr. Loomis deciding to shoot Ana when leaving or let her go. (Man vs. Self)

• Personal Opinion: Mr. Loomis did a good thing to let Ana go away from the Valley.
