What is the Education and Workforce Innovation Grant?

¨The Education and Workforce Innovation Fund was created in the 2013 North Carolina General Assembly legislative session, as bill 902. Grants will support five year programs in districts throughout North Carolina.¨The grant is aimed at strengthening successful, innovative education programs that combine academic rigor and skills development with the goal of graduating every student both college and career ready.

The Education and Workforce Innovation Grant

¨“These grants will accelerate innovation and partnerships with business and higher education in schools throughout North Carolina, and will empower our educators to be creative in how we prepare our students for college and a career,”

~ Governor McCrory"Governor Recognizes Education and Workforce Innovation Commission Award Recipients." - JDNewstream. Gov.

McCrory's Office, 17 Mar. 2014. Web. 5 Feb. 2015.

The Education and Workforce Innovation Grant Award

¨Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools ($800,000):

The grant will increase the effectiveness of two existing career academy programs and expand the number of STEM career academies in Information Technology and Health Sciences.

Grant Student Population

¨Each grant-supported academy will have a primary focus to recruit students who are at risk of dropping out of school before attaining a high school diploma. Students will include minorities and underrepresented groups, especially those who come from households in which parents did not continue education beyond high school and students who would benefit from accelerated academic instruction.

The Education and Workforce Innovation Grant Business and Industry Alignment

¨Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools partnership with Central Piedmont Community College will support (EWIG) academy students in pursuing an industry certification and/or transferable college credit.Changes are to take place to allow 9th graders within

EWIG academies to have access to the college level coursework in ACA 122 College Transfer Success, in an online environment, through the Career and College Promise program

The Education and Workforce Innovation Grant Career Development

¨Provide extensive assistance in developing job-ready skills through career information, resume writing, communication skills, mock interviews, job shadowing, and internships.¨Develop a work-based learning rubric to utilize the combined work-based learning research from the California Center for College and Career’s Exploring College and Career Options (ECCO) program and NAF.

Increase Relevance, Rigor, & Relationships.

Increase student performance.

● Demonstrates alignment with teacher evaluation Instrument STANDARD III Element C.

● Based on distinguished national career themed (academy) school data, there is a direct positive correlation between student cohort scheduling with career themed experiences that reflect student career interest within a personalized and relevant learning environment and positive growth performance relative to the performance measure variables on pages 14-16 of our Education & Workforce Grant document.

● Demonstrates alignment with CMS Strategic Plan 2018 Goal 1

● Demonstrates alignment with our Education Workforce Innovation Grant
