In a wonderful musical adaptation, Munro Leaf’s fabled bull Ferdinand comes vibrantly to life. When all the other young bulls are fighting, Ferdinand would rather smell the flowers. Watch what happens when Danilo, the reluctant matador, meets Ferdinand in the bullring. You’ll cheer for them on their journey. Angelina Ballerina: The Musical comes to The Z after opening in New York in October 2010. Inspired by the award-winning children’s book series, Angelina Ballerina, her friends and even their teacher, Ms. Mimi, are all aflutter because a special guest is coming to visit Camembert Academy! Angelina and her friends will perform all types of dance, including hip-hop, modern dance, the Irish jig and of course, ballet, and they are excited to show off their skills to their famous visitor. Angelina is the most excited of all, but will she get the starring moment she hopes for? Based on the CG-animated series, Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps, on PBS KIDS®, Angelina Ballerina: The Musical is a family-friendly show that will have the entire audience dancing in the aisles.

THEATRE MANAGEMENT: The Z provides complete management services of the theatre to the city of New Bedford. Resident Companies and community groups receive a full range of services at cost only as well as in-kind support.

REVITALIZATION: 100,000 people pass through The Z’s doors each year. New England’s Cultural Data project has determined that The Z’s direct economic impact to New Bedford and its businesses is 3 million dollars.

EDUCATION: Celebrating 25 years of commitment to the children and teachers of our community and the region!

Quietly (and not so quietly) at work outside of the mainstage spotlight, the Z’s educational programs serve to enrich the lives of children through a broad range of learning opportunities. Each year, the Z provides performances, workshops, and in-school residencies by nationally-recognized artists to 35,000 school children and teachers from our community and the region. The Z’s approach to arts education is both unique and highly effective. It not only introduces the arts to children (music, theater, and dance) but also uses the arts as a dynamic tool for teaching and learning all subjects including math, science, social studies and literature. In addition, many Z programs build bridges to understanding through the introduction of the arts of different cultures.

Professional Development for Teachers The Z offers professional development workshops that provide teachers with performing arts-based skills to teach established curriculum. Each workshop is linked with a performance. The Z and NB Public Schools are members of the Partners in Education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts which enables us to bring Kennedy Center trained master teaching artists for these workshops.
