Guiding Challenging Behaviors in Young Children

Presenter: Casey Craft, YWCA Infant Toddler Specialist Guiding a child’s behavior is something that is done throughout the day, every day. This practice is not only present when challenging behaviors occur but also in every experience from classroom management, routines, interactions, and social emotional development when forming secure attachments. This training will identify some challenging behaviors we see in our work with young children, link secure attachment and social/emotional development to positive guidance, identify and implement strategies to use in the classroom when guiding young children, and lastly, working with families in your programs on using positive guidance at home.

Presenter: Laura Barr, Extension Nutrition & Wellness Educator

Serve it Safely is a 3 hour course focused on food handling protocol and preventing foodborne illness. The topics include an overview of food safety, storing, cleaning and sanitizing, time and temperature control of high risk food products, preventing contamination and personal cleanliness. This course empowers individuals to understand the science behind the food safety rules, which promotes responsibility in handling food and safer environments for children

This training meets the requirements for food handler certificate: those working in non-restaurant facilities such as, nursing homes, licensed day care homes and facilities, hospitals, schools, and long-term care facilities and is good for three years.

Providers will be able to use the five volumes; establish a positive social-emotional environment in their program; design effective programs; establish positive messages in the environment; develop a daily schedule that is based on their program’s needs and informed by the Objectives for Development & Learning.

During the early years, children are learning to do new things with their bodies; creating movement that can communicate messages, represent actions, and for creative play. Music and movement are important for physical, social/ emotional and language stages of development in young children. This workshop will discuss these important milestones of whole body engagement through creative play, music, and movement. Participants will engage in discussion and active, hands-on experiences to implement activities into the classroom that support creative music and movement.

A well-designed and well-organized learning environment that is inviting to children, full of interesting materials, with a variety of opportunities for play, supports children’s growth throughout all developmental domains. This training will provide Early Childhood Educators with practical suggestions to enhance their classroom to encourage exploration, creativity and positive interactions. Participants will explore different types of interest centers and materials to support active learning in each area. Organization techniques for labeling materials and creating defined areas using will be shared. This session will also include discussion of classroom management during transition and clean up times.
