A TALENTED singer from northLondon was left open-mouthed at herphenomenal A-level results followinga disaster with her drama course-work.

Eleanor Rattenbury, 18, whoattends Mill Hill County High, in theLondon borough of Barnet, wasthrilled to discover she not onlyachieved two As in drama andReligious Studies, but also an A* inEnglish Literature.

“I was hoping for As but I neverthought I’d actually get them. I’veworked so hard for this. It’s amazingespecially after everything I’ve gonethrough,” she said.

“The day before my 3,500-worddrama coursework was due, Ithought I’d saved it to my computerbut it just disappeared. I panicked,but I just had to work even harder andspent the next day redoing the wholething. I’ve got to call my mum!”

Rattenbury, who helped choreo-graph a school production of Grease,is now off to Birmingham University tostudy English and theatre studies.

When asked if she had any worriedabout tuition fees, which are nowcapped at £9,000, she said: “The wayI see it, the whole of my generation isgoing to leave saddled with debt.

I T WAS love at first listen.Watching rising starCleo Sol perform withthe confidence of abonafide veteran on

stage at this year's WirelessFestival instantly converted mefrom a mere onlooker into a fully-fledged fan.

However, I quickly discoveredthat my passion for the Britishbombshell's music was not asunique as I first thought.

In fact, the 20-year-old singerhas become a force to be reck-oned with on the undergroundmusic scene over the last fewyears, bagging collaborationswith some of the biggest namesin British music, including Wretch32, Tinie Tempah and Angel.

After signing with IslandRecords and creating a buzz big-ger than insects in Texas, the partSerbian, Spanish and Jamaicanbeauty's soulful vocals and sassy

image are sure to see her starrise.

"I have been singing all of mylife; it has always been like sec-ond nature to me. Both my par-ents were musicians. They stillplay instruments so I grew up withmusic in my family. That was thething that we did whenever we gottogether," she tells me.

"Singing was just fun to me, butI realised I could make a careerout of it when I turned 15 or 16. Iwent to a 'normal’ secondaryschool in the sense that it was notmusic-based. When I went to col-lege I chose to study performingarts. During this time, I was alsoattending a youth club around thecorner from my house and while Iwas there I was able to makesome music and put it on myMySpace page."

We both laugh at the mentionof MySpace - the social network-ing site that took us through ourteenage years before it wasunceremoniously replaced by thelikes of Facebook and Twitter.

”Yes, MySpace. It was actuallyreally popular at the time," shemaintains.

"Through my MySpace page Imet UK producer DaVinChe, whoI work with now. He contacted meand asked me if I wanted to cometo the studio.”

She adds: “At first I didn’t want

to go because you don't just meetpeople online and go to the stu-dio with them. But I did myresearch on him and found outthat he worked on rapper Kano'sP's & Q's, so I was like, 'oh he islegit' and we have been workingtogether ever since."

The songstress has come along way since the days ofMySpace, though.

She is currently working on herdebut studio album, which isexpected to feature some of theUK’s finest talent. Just a few daysbefore our interview, the singerwas in the studio with northLondon star Angel.

Looking at her steady rise, it’shard to believe that Cleo Sol oncesuffered from terrible stage fright.

She admits: "A few years ago Icould not even talk to a crowd. Iwas so nervous. I used to shakebefore performances, but now Iam raring to go and I love speak-ing to the audience and showingthem who I am and finding outwho they are."

As the interview comes to aclose, Cleo is quick to add thatthe ‘Sol’ in her moniker is an odeto her Spanish heritage and actu-ally means 'Sun’ in the language.She also wishes to clear up that itis no way a reference to the typeof music she makes.

She says: "I don't like to makemyself genre specific, I just like tohave fun with music and bringlight to my performances, so thatis why I thought the name repre-sents me."

In fact, Cleo admits that she onlylikes to indulge in a ballad 'nowand then'. Based on what I am toldnext, it also appears that Cleodoesn’t need to sing love songs toget hearts racing because she hasan ever-expanding base of ‘malegroupies’ already – my words, not

hers.She laughs: "It’s funny because

you have the ones who come toshows and take pictures and thenthey tweet me three times. I don'tmind when girls do it, I think it issweet, but when it is guys I think itis funny!

“They’re like 'would you be mygirlfriend? I don't think I will everget used to that!"
