Dear Parents and Community Members,
Welcome to the Term 4 Week 6 newsletter. It is certainly a very busy time of the year for everyone in the community. With harvest well underway there are many trucks passing through our town throughout the day. I would like to remind parents and students of the importance of road safety rules at this time of the year.

The Acting Regional Executive Director Steve Watson will return to Statewide Services next week to take up a new role in the Department’s Student Support Services Directorate. Damien Shuttleworth will take up the position for the remainder of the year.
On behalf of our staff, I would like to thank Steve for the support he has provided to our school in his role as Regional Executive Director this year.

Student Well Being – Resilience One of our school priorities is Student Well Being. Our Behaviour Management Plan focusses on the values of respect, consideration, effort and resilience.
Promoting resilience in children is a not a single event but a continuous process that requires adults to be supportive and empathetic when things don’t go according to plan. It also requires parents themselves to have an understanding of resilience, to have faith in themselves, and their child’s ability to cope. From a resilience perspective parents need to coach their children through some of their more challenging moments and review learning experiences. It is important that parents avoid solving all of their children’s problems for them.
You can promote a lasting sense of resilience in your children by:
1. Having a positive attitude yourself. Your attitude as a parent impacts on their ability to bounce back from some of the difficulties they face. Make sure you model a ‘you can do it’ attitude for your child when he/she meets some of life’s curve balls.
2. Look for teachable moments. Many kids’ learning opportunities are disguised as problems. Make the most of these opportunities so that kids can grow and learn from some of the challenges they face.
3. Make kids active participants in the family. Active participation in a family develops the self-help, problem solving and independence skills that are necessary for resilience.
4. Build children’s coping skills. There are plenty of strategies you can pass on to your children to help them cope when life doesn’t go their way, including acceptance, getting away for a while, and normalisation.
A fact sheet on ‘Resiliency Robbers’ compiled by Michael Gross has been included with the newsletter.
Concert Students commenced practicing for the concert at the hall this week. They will have several other practice sessions over the next three weeks as they prepare for the year’s final big night. The evening will commence at 7:00pm. We remind all families of the “bring and share” supper that traditionally follows the performances and we look forward to having all of the local community in attendance.
Reports Reports will be sent home to parents on Tuesday the 17th of December. If after reading the report you would like an interview with the teacher to discuss your child’s report, please contact the front office.
Kind Regards, Roseanne Ullrich Principal

The Dragon’s Side—by Holly
His amber eyes shone like bush fires. His groans shook the ground as arrows pierced into his scaly, clammy skin. The knights had been ordered to kill the dragon but had so far been unsuccessful. It’s razor sharp talons tore the ground apart with each step. Its powerful legs threw the knights into the distance until “POW!” an arrow was shot straight into the dragons small, wrinkled heart. He opened his mouth showing his savage, needle teeth like spikes on a trap before falling to the ground in pain. He let out a final moaning growl. He had been defeated. He had been shot. He had lost.

Toothless and the Village—by Rhys
The dragon paused in mid air and shot a plasma blast at the village on an island. The people at the village ran everywhere like little ants. The dragon was black and had fire red eyes. It’s teeth shone in the sun like gold and it had dagger like claws.
He landed in the centre of their village and shot another plasma blast at all the houses.
He let out an almighty roar that made an earthquake.
All of the burnt houses collapsed in and the people at the village hopped in to their boats and sailed away.
The dragon followed them because he was hungry. He shot out another plasma blast and fried them like chips.
He flew home and told his family and mates about his very yummy dinner.

Tips for sharing the road with trucks
First and foremost be tolerant and courteous and comply with the road rules. Here are some more tips about how to share the roads with long and heavy vehicles.
1.Truck-wise There are many types of large vehicles on the road. Know how to identify them and you can anticipate what to expect when you are on the road with one.
Oversize trucks are wider, longer or higher than a normal truck, or a combination of these. They have an orange light that flashes and are sometimes escorted in front and/or behind, so allow extra room to overtake.
Pilots and Traffic Escort Wardens - Always follow directions given by Pilots or Traffic Escort Wardens. Their extensive training and experience helps ensure the safety of all road users. (Not sure if this is where you want this to sit)
Long vehicles tow a combination of trailers and can be up to 30 metres in length. Roadtrains are exceedingly long vehicles and can be up to 53.5 metres in length.
2. Don't cut in It's dangerous to cut into a gap in front of a truck as they slow for traffic lights or when on the highway. For every 5 km/h a truck travels, it needs a space equivalent to its length to stop - that's a lot of space, particularly if a truck is doing 100 km/h.
3. Do not overtake turning vehicle The sign 'Do not overtake turning vehicle' on the back of trucks warns you that the truck needs more room when it turns and can legally turn from the centre lane. Don't move into the truck's blind spot to the left when it turns - if you can't see the driver's face in their mirrors, they can't see you.
4. Maintain your speed When a truck overtakes you, maintain your speed - don't accelerate. If anything, ease up on the accelerator.
5. Overtake with care A truck is longer than a car, so you need more road to pass. When you're sure it's safe, signal, move out and pass sensibly.
6. Roundabouts The 'Do not overtake turning vehicle' sign applies at roundabouts too. Larger trucks need to make wide turns and often need the entire road. Truck drivers try to anticipate traffic flow at roundabouts to avoid stopping, so the truck is not trying to race you onto the roundabout, the driver is simply trying to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic. If the truck has to stop, a slow start can cause a traffic jam.
7. 100 km/h 'speed limiting' Speed limiting, when referring to trucks, means that no engine power is delivered above 100 km/h. However, gravity can still push a truck faster downhill. Truck drivers like to be at the maximum legal speed as they approach hills to lessen traffic delays, but if they slow as they travel uphill or overtake, they're doing the best they can.
8. Towing caravans and boats When a truck goes to overtake you, maintain your speed and don't move off the road - moving left only makes controlling your trailer more difficult.
9. Night lights When you come up behind a truck dip your lights early as truck mirrors are large and don't have an anti-glare position.
10. Courtesy on the roads Courtesy and patience prevent road rage and may even save your life. A friendly wave is more welcome than an angry fist.
