advisor: Juli Brode
grant: NCARB Prize or CreativeIntergration o Practice andEducation in the Academy
On a team o two, the grantwriter and mysel, submitted a
previously fnished designBuildrom designBridge, a student runcommunity build organization.I was given the challengeto create a 30”x 60”graphicboard to explain the process
o designBridge in context o this project. This would giveNCARB an opportunity to seewhat the University o OregonArchitecture program doesto integrate students into
proessional practices, and orthem to help us with grantsranging rom $7,500 to $25,000.
abstract: The Garden Avenueproject was a student-leddesign-build project or a localnon-proft organization, HIV
Alliance. This multi-acetedexterior design provided awide range o benefts to the
clients: shade or the highlyexposed southern açade;an accessible, clarifed entry
sequence; unctional outdoorspace; a revitalized memorialgarden; and a greater senseo identity without obtrusivesignage. In addition to providinga dignifed, respectul place or
clientele, the project provideda highly hands-on learningexperience or students in thecontext o proessional practice.Project participants developedthe design rom the earliest
conceptual phases throughpermitting and construction, acilitated by the designBridgeyear.
