Immanuel and St. Andrew CE Primary School  Reception Class O, Term 2 Curriculum Bulletin  Welcome back to the second term and probably the busiest of the year! I am really looking forward to getting started with the children’s nativity play and all  the other events that make this time of year so exciting! I would like to say a big thank you to those of you who have kindly offered to volunteer with reading and other projects in the classroom, we are looking forward to getting going with that this term as well. Forest school will also be starting this term. Please see more information about this on the back! Any queries please get in touch. Mia Owens [email protected]  Personal Social Emotional Development:  This term the children are learning about different cultures and  beliefs. We will be looking at the important features of different religions such as the buildings, celebrations and t raditions. Within SEAL the children will be thinking about what their talents are and why it’s so good to use them! Communication Language and Literacy:  We will be exploring lots of different forms of writing this term, e.g. invitations, lists, menus and instructions. The children will  also be using non-fiction texts to support their learning, using the index and contents pages to search for facts in order to answer questions. Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy :  Our main focus this term is consolidating the children’s understanding of number and moving on to look at addition and subtraction. We will also be exploring the patterns and  shape that appear in art from different cultures, making our own and using shapes to build models. Knowledge and Understanding of the World: The children will be encouraged to ask questions about different religions and cultures this term in order to extend  their understanding. We will be using recycled modelling to build models of important buildings within different cultures,   focusing on the skills they need to join and adapt the resources. Physical Development: The PE topic this term is dance. We will be exploring music and movement from different cultures, with the children working together to create t heir own dances. Fine motor control will continue to be a focus. Creative Development: Looking at art from around the world provides an exciting basis for the exploration of different creative techniques and  approaches. There will be lots of restaurant themed role play as cooking and eating are a big part of all celebrations! Early Years Foundation Stage Focus for the Term:

 Im ortant notes and dates

Fore s t Schoo lMiss Hathaway was lucky enough last year to complete the training to become a Forest School Leader and is incredibly excited about

getting it started with this year’s reception children! Forest School is all about using the environment as a positive

learning resource. The children will take part in activities that are all

focused on building their self esteem, independence and sense of  responsibility whilst also having loads of fun!

We are perfectly placed by a fantastic outdoor space in Streatham Common and will use this weekly for our Forest School sessions, in

both rain and shine! All children will complete a term of Forest School this year, so if you are interested in being a part of this really exciting venture then please do speak to Miss Hathaway - we are

always looking for enthusiastic helpers who love the outdoors!

Out s id e wearOur ethos in Reception is that children are free to access all areas of  the leaning environment as they wish. This means that in the rain

they are free to go outside. Please ensure your child has a waterproof  coat and, if possible, a pair of named welly boots so they are able to

explore the change of the seasons first hand.

Reading r e co rd sPlease ensure that when you have read the school reading book at  home with your child, that you mark in their reading records that

you have done so. This not only gives us a valuable insight into  how they are doing at home but also shows us that they have had

time to read over the week. From year 1 onwards books are changed by a teaching assistant and will not be changed if there is

no mark to confirm they have definitely read at home.

Phoni c s oundsSome parents have asked how to best support their child with the

pronunciation of the sounds in phonics. Below is the video Miss Hathaway used in the phonics meeting
