Yr7 Art and Design Work – Week Beginning 23rd March 2020
All of you have been working on your shoe unit and we have explored shading skills and learnt about abstraction. It looks like we will not finish this work unfortunately, and so, in a couple of weeks, I will be starting a new scheme of work with you all.
However, If you picked up your work on Friday you can finish your shoe piece using a wide range of shading techniques and materials. Remember they must only be materials that are ‘monochromatic’ (black and white!).
The next few slides are for those of you that would like to finish your final pieces. After that I will set some existing and some new tasks for this week!
Lots of different Grey and Black tones
Neatly painted block tonesand
effective shading
Clear sections
Lively mark making and patterns
You couldOutline shapes with
marker pen.
Tryand then add tone and predictable
patterns using both a fine liner and
tippex pen.
You coulduse more complex
and innovative patterns that show
tone and refinement.
Use this checklist to make sure you have tried each technique!
Quick ReviewThis is called the Burlington House Cartoon by Leonardo Da Vinci. It is housed in the National gallery in London. The modern word cartoon is in fact a very old word and comes from these special designs produced by the great masters of Renaissance Art.
‘Cartoons of this sort were usually transferred to a board for painting by pricking or incising the outline’
We showed you this so we could discuss how important shading is to create Form.
First Task -
The following task was set as homework on Insight and demonstrated in some of your last lessons. If you had it set please make sure you complete it and If this was not set in your lesson then do your best in producing a really smooth shaded cylinder. Shade the outside of the cylinder and inside the open top!
Don’t forget to add a sun to show which side the light source is coming from and don’t forget the shadow on the table top which you should also !
If you can, draw the cylinder yourself!
If you have already done the cylinder then you ca start the next task today –Zentangle For most students this is work to be set next week!
• Look at the clip and think about the abstract shapes and patterns being used?

Patterns and shapes! What makes this image exciting to look at?
This type of art is called a zentangle!
On the next slide is an example of a different approach to making good use of black and white by another famous artist M.C. Escher.
Starter
M. C. Escher
Graphic, illustrative prints that have fantastic ranges
of tone and different shades of grey and black.
• If that image is successful because it uses a range of tones again, what makes this type of image interesting to look at? Think in terms of descriptive words?
Remember using this as a help sheet in your lessons? Look at the variety of marks and patterns!
ZentangleOne day, Maria told Rick what she experienced as she drew background patterns on a manuscript she was creating. She
described her feelings of timelessness, freedom and well-being and complete focus on what she was doing with
no thought or worry about anything else."You're describing meditation," Rick said.
Rick and Maria wondered if they could create a simple system so others might enjoy a similar experience. And so
began the journey towards discovering this simple and elegant system called the Zentangle Method.
Little did they know then that it would grow this quickly and touch as many lives in as many ways as it has.
‘When you create in a Zentangle way, you create a beautiful piece of art. You also can deliberately create a mood, a focus,
a state of mind.’
Your challenge…Some zentangles take as long as 10 hours! – Your
challenge is to create your own zentangle in about an hour, although you can spend more
time!
I want you to draw a square that is 15cm by 15cm – on the square you must create the most interesting, innovative and unique pattern that is filled with detail and creative lines. Only use
black pen!
If you are able to photograph your final piece email it to your teacher and they will paste
them all together and put them on the website!
