1.1.1.1. BaptistaBaptistaBaptistaBaptista Rui Miguel, PortugalPortugalPortugalPortugal Rui Baptista, MD PhD is a curiosity-driven, Board-certified junior consultant in cardiology working in a large, university hospital

in Coimbra, who graduated from University of Lisbon before heading to Coimbra in 2007 for his Cardiology residency. His clinical interests include the management of advanced heart failure and pulmonary arterial hypertension. His research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind pulmonary arterial hypertension and left ventricular dysfunction-associated pulmonary hypertension. He is also a teaching assistant of Cardiology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and is pursuing a PhD on translational science. Due to my interest in heart failure, I have spent a 3-month period at the Pulmonary Hypertension Unit at Hopital Erasme, in Brussels, in 2012, under the supervision of Prof Jean-Luc Vachièry, and in 2014, thanks to a grant from the Harvard Medical School-Portugal Program, to visit for one month the Advanced Heart Disease Section of the Brigham and Women’s under the supervision of Prof Mandeep Mehra. He is also member of the 2017–2019 Directive Board of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology. One of his tasks among the Board is to improve acute heart failure care in Portugal through the dissemination of a hands-on full-day case-based course named “Acute Heart Failure Advanced Life Support - SAVIC”, developed in collaboration with the Brazilian Society of Cardiology and that has trained more than 500 Portuguese physicians. Additionally, he is also part of the Portuguese Congress of Cardiology Organizing Committee, being responsible for the organization of the Heart Failure and Pulmonary Hypertension-specific scientific program in the next two editions (2018-2019).. The interaction with fundamental scientists was very enriching and the management of the animal models with right heart failure was very insightful into the mechanisms of disease

progression and reversion. The PhD supported the development of a newer translational project, focused on the optical coherence tomography assessment of the pulmonary arteries of heart transplant candidates, with a view to identify virtual histology markers of pulmonary vascular disease, that has recently been founded under the European-funded Centro 2020 program.

4. LAINSLAINSLAINSLAINS Ines, PortugalPortugalPortugalPortugal

Dr. Ines Lains received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Faculty of

Medicine, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal, in June

2010. She was amongst the top three percent students of her university, and graduated as the second top student of her medical school class. She initiated her residency training in Portugal in 2011, and as an ophthalmology resident, she discovered that, in addition of patient care, she was also passionate for research. In light of this, she applied and was selected for the Harvard Portugal Program – a program developed by the Portuguese

Government in collaboration with Harvard Medical School (HMS). While undertaking this two-year program, she also elected to enroll in a PhD program through a scholarship combining PhD training with residency. With this growing knowledge of the tools and skillsets needed to conduct clinical research, along with an increasing clinical understanding of ophthalmology, she applied and got awarded the Junior Grant and Career Development Award of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in collaboration with HMS. This prestigious grant gave her the opportunity to start a research fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear (MEE), HMS. Since July 2014, Dr. Lains has been working at MEE. She is actively involved in the design and development of a multicenter, cross-sectional study with the aim of identifying novel biomarkers of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and improving the knowledge on the pathogenesis of this blinding disease. To date, this study has successfully recruited over 500 patients and involves both Portuguese and American investigators and clinicians. Dr. Lains currently has 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 11 as first-author. Among other awards, last year she received the Evangelos Gragoudas Prize, which recognizes the best clinical paper in vitreoretinal diseases published by the HMS Department of Ophthalmology.

I’m a Portuguese medical doctor working as consultant psychiatrist at the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre, namely in our Youth Mental Health Unit - in outpatient and

inpatient settings - and at the Early Psychosis and Neurodevelopment Disorders outpatient units; these clinical areas are my main topics of research interest. I did clinical internships in 2016 at the Lambeth Early Onset Psychosis Unit (King’s College, London, UK) and at the Santa Maria Hospital’s Adolescent Unit (Lisboa Norte Hospital Centre, PT). My PhD thesis work’s title is “Neurofeedback at autism and schizophrenia: self-modulation of executive function with real-time fMRI”. I’ve contributed to several other research projects, such as “Emotional and behavioral dysregulation in a school population” – this looked on school violence screening and prevention in Coimbra. Our working group on school violence was composed of several civil society organizations: Coimbra City Council, police forces, the National Psychologists' Association, Portugal’s National Department of Education, the Portuguese Association for Victim Support and Amnesty International. I also had the chance to organize and kickstart a Liaison Psychiatry Unit for college students at Coimbra University in 2015, feeling how

essential it is to bring youth mental health to the attention of decision-makers, in order to implement adequate policies of screening and mental health promotion in young adults and adolescents.

I was born on June 27th 1978. I finished my Medical Degree in 2002. After that, I went on to do my General Residency in Hospital de S. José, in Lisbon. By then, It was clear to me that surgery was my passion,

and I started my Maxillofacial Surgery Residency in 2005. After completing my residency, I became an Attending Maxillofacial Surgeon in the Maxillofacial Surgery Department in Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Central, a position that I maintain until this day. I embraced a new project and became a member of the first Pediatric Maxillofacial Surgery Unit in Hospital de Dona Estefânia, filling a gap that had been long present in our Institution, and my wish is that my colleagues and I will be able to contribute to the creation of a fully functional craniofacial unit, that can meet the standards of excellence. Keeping in mind the difficulties that made me struggle throughout my residency, I have been involved in orientation of Maxillofacial Surgery residents since the completion of my training and I am know the Coordinator of the Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program and Pre-Graduate Teaching in my Department. I am also Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a member of the Directive Board of the College of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Portuguese Medical Association. I am married and have two children and my hobbies include hiking, mountaineering and martial arts.

WHO WE ARE

The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) was formally launched in South Africa in March 2016, bringing together three established networks

of academies of science, medicine and engineering, The three pillars of the InterAcademy Partnership include the three original academy

networks, namely:

IAP for Science (formerly IAP, the global network of science academies, founded in 1993);

IAP for Health (formerly the InterAcademy Medical Panel, IAMP), founded in 2000; and

IAP for Research (formerly the InterAcademy Council, IAC), founded in 2000

Under the new InterAcademy Partnership, more than 130 national and regional member academies work together to support the special

role of science and its efforts to seek solutions to address the world's most challenging problems. In particular, IAP harnesses the

expertise of the world's scientific, medical and engineering leaders to advance sound policies, improve public health, promote excellence

in science education, and achieve other critical development goals.

IAP for Health is a network of the world's medical academies and medical sections of academies of science and engineering. The

organization is committed to improving health world-wide with the following goals:

• Strengthen the capacity of academies to provide evidence based advice to governments on health and science policy;

• Support the creation of new academies;

• Support the creation of projects by member academies to strengthen research and higher education in their countries; and

• Issue consensus statements on matters of importance to global health.

To contribute to building capacity around the issue of developing leadership qualities among health professionals, IAP for Health (formerly

IAMP) launched its Young Physician Leaders (YPL) programme in 2011 in partnership with the World Health Summit (WHS) and the M8

Alliance of Academic Health Centres and Medical Universities.

To date, IAMP has trained 132 such YPL, all of whom are top young professionals, under the age of 40, who were nominated by their

national academies. Their details can be found in the dedicated YPL Directory.

IAP projects are funded through donations from partner organizations such as IAP – the global network of science academies – along with

generous in-kind support from member academies. Appreciation should be expressed to the Italian government which provides support

to IAP host organization, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in Trieste, Italy.

HOST AND SPONSOR ORGANIZATIONS The University of Coimbra is the oldest university in the country, and for centuries it was the only university

in Portugal. The history of higher education in Portugal is bound closely to the history of this historic center

of learning. Founded in 1290 by King Dinis in Lisbon, it was permanently settled in Coimbra in 1537, by order

of King João III, after a period of migration between these two cities.

Coimbra Hospital and Universitary Centre (CHUC) mission is to deliver high-quality clinical care in a context of

pre and postgraduate training with a strong focus on research, scientific knowledge and innovation. CHUC´s

excellence centres ensure high standard healthcare services being the Portuguese hospital with the largest

number of Centers of Reference and belonging to ten Europe Reference Networks.

Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a joint institution of the Freie Universität Berlin and the Humboldt-

Universität zu Berlin, and is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. There, 3800 doctors and scientists

heal, do research and teach at the top international level. More than half of the German Nobel Prize winners

in medicine and physiology come from the Charité. It also has an international reputation for excellence in

training.

M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centres, and Medical Universities

The M8 Alliance is a collaboration of academic institutions of educational and research excellence that

recognizes responsibility to improve global health and works with political and economic decision makers and

civil society to develop science-based solutions for health challenges worldwide. This international network

gives the World Health Summit an outstanding academic background.

WHS - The World Health Summit

The World Health Summit is the annual conference of the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centres and

Medical Universities together with the National Academies. It is one of the world’s foremost gatherings of

leaders from academia, politics, industry and civil society to develop joint strategies and take action to address

key challenges in medical research, global health and health care delivery with the aim of shaping the political,

academic and social agendas.

TWAS The World Academy of Sciences

TWAS is a global science academy located on the campus of the Abdus Salam International Centre for

Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. TWAS works to advance science and engineering for sustainable

prosperity in the developing world by recognizing, supporting and promoting excellence in scientific research

in the developing world; responding to the needs of young scientists in countries that are lagging in science

and technology; encouraging scientific research and sharing of experiences in solving major problems facing

developing countries.

"Sponsorship and travel expenses to participants from low and middle income countries were granted by the

WHO Regional Office for Africa."
