The Point Neighborhood
Volunteer with YouthBuild at
a regional day of service that
promotes a positive youth
image in the North Shore
region and revitalizes the
Point neighborhood in Salem.
With the support of the
Department of Labor,
YouthBuild North Shore has
expanded to include
members from Lynn, as well
as an increased number of
members from Salem. In
December, YouthBuild
North Shore’s first cohort of
dual city members
underwent Mental
Toughness, a two-week
orientation session.
Members were exposed to
YouthBuild’s unique model,
took part in intense training
sessions, and were
introduced to the world of
post-secondary education.
This period is key to
motivate the students while
setting the tone for the year
and for making the final selection of members.
Mental Toughness is also the
place to continue to build
relationships between the
participants and staff and to
build a cohesive, safe, and
supportive peer group. At
the completion of Mental
Toughness, YouthBuild North
Shore enrolled 10 students
from Salem and Lynn. These
members have already
obtained their OSHA-10 and
CPR/First Aid certifications
and are also working
towards their PACT
certification, which has
been described by our
members as “great resume builders that provide us a brighter
future with more opportunity.”
WINTER 2015
• 67% of members have received their OSHA 10
and CPR/First Aid certifications

Apprentice Training Certificate (PACT)

through a financial literacy course
• 1,184 AmeriCorps hours completed

COHORT 1 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
YouthBuild AmeriCorps strives to empower young people to step forward, lead, and
transform their communities through national service. They do this by providing
funding, education, and guidance in an effort to increase capacity of YouthBuild
AmeriCorps programs. YouthBuild AmeriCorps has a commitment to quality,
responsible use of resources, and fostering collaboration.
With a grant from YouthBuild USA’s AmeriCorps program, YouthBuild North Shore is
now able to offer our YouthBuild members quarter-time AmeriCorps slots. During a
member’s time here they will complete a minimum of 450 service hours that are
designated to building affordable housing and taking part in community service
activities. At the completion of these hours each member will receive a $1500
educational award that can be used for assistance in any future educational pursuit.
NOW AN AMERICORPS PROGRAM!
PARTNER HIGHLIGHT Our newest partner as of December
2014, Catholic Charities North has a
mission to build a just and
compassionate society rooted in the
dignity of all people. They have been a
supportive and helpful partner in our
quest for expansion, and because they
are a prominent member of the Lynn
community they have given us amazing
visibility and opportunity to work with
their young people. Catholic Charities
has provided us with assistance and
resources we need in areas we are
working to develop. With their three
main goals: preventing hunger and
homelessness, helping families
overcome poverty through education,
and creating nurturing environments
where children thrive, a partnership with
YouthBuild was a perfect match.

MEMBER HIGHLIGHT When Richie was kicked out of high school for dealing
drugs, his education and career options were limited.
By enrolling in YouthBuild North Shore, Richie was
empowered by leadership development skills and given
support to make better decisions. During his time at
YouthBuild he was given the opportunity to intern for
NEI General Contracting where he would gain hands
on experience and be introduced to real world work
expectations. He exceeded all expectations.
YouthBuild staff shared an excerpt from Richie’s exit
letter:
