This is an ambitious vision. This cannot be achieved by any one individual or even a group of individuals. This will need input and efforts by each and every member of the community, albeit in different forms. I especially believe that Bhatia Youth have a large role to play in the rejuvenation of the community through their contributions of time, energy and intellect. For example, GBF projects have successfully been executed through our untiring team of young volunteers who unselfishly devote their spare time and holidays to GBF and its activities. We have seen this with the Bhatia Sports Meet, the Parichay Milan, Education Event for Youth, the GBF website (which is designed and maintained by a young and enterprising Bhatia couple!) just to name a few initiatives. We are grateful to our young Bhatia volunteers for their dedication. We have several large projects that are work in progress, including the Bhatia Community Census, Bhatia Business Directory, Education and Career Awareness Sessions for Bhatia Youth, Parichay Milan 2012 and GBF Sports 2012. We are also in the process of setting up an archive of old literature pertaining to the Bhatia community (both in Gujarati and English, via translation). Archival Research is also underway by Dr. Mangala Purandare for the second volume of the publication – History of the Bhatia Community. You can observe from this list that we have projects that appeal to people with different skill-sets and from diverse domains – whether you are from the fields of IT, Accounting, Creative Writing/ Design, Academia, Social Work or Business – it really doesn't matter. We have projects that need your skills. What we really need is your passion and commitment to help achieve our collective vision for the Bhatia Community. Over four decades ago, John Kennedy said to his countrymen – 'Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.' Kennedy's words are as relevant today to all of us in the Bhatia community. This community, through the effort of our ancestors, has given us much to be proud of – our mercantile heritage, our reputation for probity and integrity, our collective prosperity – we now need to give back to the community through our efforts. On another note, we continue to leverage information technology to reach out to as many Bhatias as possible around the world. Our new-look website www.globalbhatia.org, designed by Jesal & Bhavesh Kapadia is up and running; our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/ globalbhatiafoundation/ maintained by Jaysinhbhai Sampat from Pune now has 2,235 members globally. It is indeed a privilege to be reaching out to the Bhatia community at large through the medium of Youth@GBF, the e-newsletter of the Global Bhatia Foundation (GBF).

As you know, the vision of the GBF is to restore the past glory of the Bhatia Community, protect our rich cultural heritage and ensure the prosperity and well-being of Bhatias globally.

We have seen this

with the Bhatia Sports Meet, the Parichay Milan, Education Event for Youth, the GBF website (which is designed and maintained by a young and enterprising Bhatia couple!) just to name a few initiatives.

Haridas Raigaga

Sheth Ladha Damji (Ladhabha) was born in Mundra in an ordinary family and was educated upto primary school. He started working for Jeram Shivji's Company in Zanzibar at a tender age but his skill, cleverness and ability made him the most trusted employee”Munim” of the company. He managed custom collection work of the state for the Sultan.

His reputation with Britishers, French, Indian Merchants has been g reat . He was most trustworthy person for the Sultan. During the tenure of Ladhabha, it was a golden period for Jeram Shivji & Co. He was a banker to the Sultan as well as Britishers. Since

th ththose days (18 & 19 centuries) , Sultan of Zanzibar who was also Sultan of Oman maintained very close relationship with Bhatia Merchants. Ladhabha lived his entire life in Zanzibar. On his death, British, French, German, American and Italian Consulates had hoisted their flags on half mast in respect to Ladhabha.

He built a bungalow at Mundra which came to be known as “Navlakho Bungalow” as it costed Nine lac Kories to built. This Bungalow is a prestige of Mundra (Mundranu Naak) and has about 72 rooms. Due to several such bungalows and planned township, Mundra became “Paris” of Kutchh. The pictures and drawings are

sourced from “Report on the Architectural Heritage of Bhadreshwar, Mundra and Mandvi-Studies on the Port Cities of Kutch, Gujarat” by the research team of Gujarat & Japan (School of Human Cultures, The University of Shiga Prefecture, Japan).

Shri Dungersi Dharamsi Sampat in his Book “Bhatiyaona Sansthanono Itihas” published in “Bhatia Yuvak-Kalapi” as several chapters has written about Ladhabha – “He climbed up step by step. His honesty and truthfulness were extreme. His love and affection for Bhatia fraternity was boundless. Of the Bhatias of the eighteenth century, Ladhabha was the best. His career was like a shinning sun. I pray to the almighty that such brilliant, genius may born again and again in the Bhatia community”.

It was a beautiful morning,People in trains were getting wrung.Boarded train with no support,My fingers were waiting for heavenly touch. M still searching for that eye.

I was among them waiting to breathe,Breathe and hope to stand strong. It already left the platform,Now was the time my heart was in dread. M still searching for that eye.

Suddenly my life was assured,Fervent hand of lady couldn't be amply thanked. While I was out of woods but not gratis,Thought of figuring out my saver hits. M still searching for that eye.

Moving my face in every ways,I wanted to thank my heavenly helper. Many obstacles came in hope,But rays definitely were toadying. M still searching for that eye.

Beautiful brown eyes with understanding,I was blessed to have spotted my God.Conversation kicked off,A unique talk with eye to eye. M still searching for that eye.

She understood my plight and message,Affectionate reply was unexpected from a stranger (God),I said thanks and her silence was all I was happy with,But still couldn't get enough of that eye. M still searching for that eye.

I was trying to see her face,When I got a hard push to get out to be safe.Even today in population of millions,My hope is not lost. M still searching for that eye.

Unexpected outcomes

Art is fun, right? Of course! It's enjoyable to paint, sketch, draw – in short, to create. But what if the fun could be extended, and art could become a shared experience and have a deeper meaning? Dream A Dream firmly believes that art is a powerful tool with which to teach life skills.Dream A Dream was founded in 1999. It is a Bengaluru-based charitable trust that seeks to empower children from vulnerable backgrounds by developing life skills while sensitising the community through active volunteering. The aim is the creation of a non-discriminatory society, where similarities are recognised and unique differences are appreciated. Over 11 years, Dream A Dream has impacted the lives of 10,000 children, with support from over 2000 volunteers, who represent an increasingly sensitive community. So what is the Dream Creative Art Programme all about?“We teach children from class IV to IX different techniques of creating art, but we don't stop there,” says Neha, life skills facilitator. “We have a reflection circle after that, during which children link the art activity to situations they face in life.”How does this work?“Take the Magic Thread Activity, for example,” Neha elaborates. “The children take a piece of string and dip it into the paint of their choice. They place the string on a piece of paper, and fold the paper. Then, they zig-zag the string through the folded sheet. When they open it out, they are very surprised at what they see!”The responses pour in – “I see a butterfly … I see a flower …” but it doesn't stop there. The facilitator then takes the discussion forward, to whether the children expected this result or not. “No, we didn't! We are surprised!” they say. They then move on to unexpected things that have happened to them in their own experience. Here's what one child has to say:“One day in school, I had just completed writing my test and was sitting silently in my place. The teacher saw that I had completed my test, so she called me and asked me to carry some papers and keep them on her table. I did what the teacher told me. When I was not at my desk, my friend who was sitting next to me took my paper and rubbed all the answers that I had written. I could see that my answers had been rubbed off and I saw him and knew he had done it. He later admitted to doing it, but I didn't have time to rewrite my answers ….and I failed in that test! I didn't really think that my friend would do something like this! It was unexpected! I asked him why he did it, and he didn't answer. I told the teacher and my mother about the incident the same day. The teacher said that she would give me marks on the day of the Parent-Teacher meeting, not before that.”The facilitator is then able to extend the discussion and involve the rest of the class. What is their reaction to the incident they have just heard? “We should not do this … it is very bad … if someone is your friend, they should not hurt you … friends should be good to you, this is a bad friend …”How did the child handle the situation?“That boy said sorry and he will not do it again, so he is my friend again and I also teach him lessons which he does not understand in class.”Starting from 'art', the children have gone on to talk about injustice, friendship and forgiveness – all in relation to

by Sonali Bhatia, Bangalore

something that has actually happened to one of them. They can relate to what has happened and the emotions of all concerned. This kind of discussion helps them cope with things that happen to them, at home and in school. They may not be able to discuss these things otherwise, due to lack of sympathetic people or lack of opportunity to bring up the topic. The Dream Creative Arts Programme has been successfully running at Dream A Dream since 2002. It is a long-term, focused, curriculum-based programme aimed at developing life skills, using a variety of arts and crafts. Through art, children learn to value their own uniqueness, to appreciate their individuality and express themselves. Angkor Wat (Vishnu Temple, Cambodia)Largest Temple on Earth & one of the 7 Wonders of the World

The temples of Angkor were built between the 9th and 14th centuries when the Khmer civilisation was at the height of its power. Angkor was the capital of the mighty Khmer empire which ruled a large portion of South East Asia around 1000 years ago. After the collapse of the Khmer civilisation Angkor was abandoned and the temples were covered by the jungle. They were rediscovered in the 1860s by the French. Today there are around 100 temples in a large area around the city of Siem Reap. The temples of Angkor have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992.
