YOUTH VOLUNTEER GUIDE Volunteer programs serving our community

September 2012 Dear Youth Volunteer, There are many wonderful reasons to volunteer. You may want to help the less fortunate, to meet new people, to make a difference in the community, to learn new skills and gain experience, to fulfill a course requirement, to have fun, or all of the above. The Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County wants to help you find the best volunteer opportunity for you! In this directory, you will find a wide array of volunteer opportunities with nonprofit agencies whose missions in-clude health and human services, education, the environment, animals and wildlife, arts and culture, recreation, and more. To help choose the organization that is right for you, please consider the following:

• Are you interested in helping a specific population (for example, children, seniors, animals, the disabled or disadvantaged)?

• Is there a specific job you would like to do or skill you hope to acquire? Do you want to work directly with the people that the organization serves, or do you prefer behind-the-scenes tasks, such as working in an office, or doing food preparation, landscaping or construction?

• Are you looking for a one-time project or an on-going volunteer position? How much time can you com-mit?

• Do you want to volunteer by yourself or with your family? • Do you meet the organization’s age requirement?

The table at the front of this directory will help you to identify organizations based on their mission and the kinds of volunteer work that they offer. I encourage you to interview several organizations that have opportunities that match your interests. Find out how your volunteer work contributes to their mission and goals, and ask for specif-ics:

• What will I be doing? • When will I be volunteering? • Where will I be working? (Ask about bus lines, parking, and directions.) • With whom will I be working? (Request a contact name, phone number and email address.) • What should I wear? • Is there any training involved?

Once you find the volunteer opportunity that best meets your criteria, be sure to agree on your starting date, vol-unteer schedule and responsibilities. Remember that you are making an important commitment not just to that nonprofit organization and the people it serves, but also to yourself, and take that obligation seriously. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience and most volunteers feel that they get more than they give. However, sometimes the actual work may differ from your expectations, or circumstances may change that affect your ability to volunteer. If you find that you can not fulfill your volunteer commitment, please be sure to notify the organiza-tion as soon as possible. They are counting on you! I hope you will take a moment to complete the questionnaire after you’ve had a chance to use this directory; your input is very important to us. Good luck and happy volunteering! Yours truly, Fay Mauro, Executive Director
