Youth subculture is basically a youth group with distinct behaviours, styles and interests, it’s usually ascribe by the individuals background i.e.) school, family and work. The elements for the individual subculture can be their fashion sense, their religion, slang or dialect and their behavior. The vehicles can also be a form of identity with examples like cars, motorcycles, scooters or even skate boards, I the 1960s the mods were associated with scooters and rockers associated with motorcycles. Each youth music genres are also associated with their subcultures for example punks, emos, metalheads, ravers, rockers and Goths all associated with a particular musical tastes, this is called symbolism , symbolism can be their music, clothing etc. A youth subculture can be interpreted with the music, fashion, make- up, their general attitude and their stereotypes. The youth culture never even existed before the 1960s as the age of the ‘teenager’ never really existed, it wasn’t until the 1960s the ‘teenager’ existed and it was seen as rebellious, with the mods and rockers example which caused a moral panic with the help of the media, the term moral panic coined by Stanley Cohen was a term that began in which over-reporting can cause the consumer to feel threatened and become aware, this in my opinion is what caused the birth of youth subculture as this is seen as rebellion. People can see different youth subculture in many ways, especially the older generation who see youth subculture as young people being ‘rebellious against society’ thanks to the media news we see youths being violent or being rebellious in different ways for example we interpret ‘hipsters’ or ‘rappers’ as violent in society but not all of them are.
