seven weeks 14 young men and women ndash including many from GICs Youth AdvisoryBoard ndash worked with gravitytank to explore their neighborhoods and develop designs tomake their communities safer As Allstate CEO Tom Wilson said in his opening remarks ldquoWe wanted to see whatwould happen if we approached programming from a market research point of view ndashfrom talking to the customers Lets treat these kids not like projects but likecustomers Lets ask them what they thinkrdquo

Teams developed ideas with two directives improving safety and piquing youthinterest The resulting eight proposals fell into three categories safe spaces safeopportunities and safe mobility With moderation from Richard Steele of WBEZs TheBarbershop Show student teams presented their project ideas to a panel of fourleaders George Aye Evelyn Diaz Mike McGee and DeAnna McLeary representingthe civic design media and tech communities The evening ended with a call to actionand a promise to implement some of the programs this summer in Chicago

The Future of Youth Shout Out

GIC looks forward to partnering with local organizations to fund the followingideas in the coming months

Micro Jobs ndash Young people will have the opportunity to generate incomeby participating in online market research surveys conducted by variouscompanies while in the safety of community centers and neighborhoodhubs As they earn income they will also gain computer skills and interactwith different brands Mobile Peace Leaders ndash Who better to understand a teen than anotherteen Mobile peace leaders will be youth who are trained to be communitymediators traveling around the neighborhood to provide conflict resolutionvia a mobile vehicle or bus They will also be trained to help their fellowteens cope with angerUrban Oasis ndash Teens in underserved communities desperately need safeplaces where they can spend time with their friends To create urbanoases young people from different communities will take the lead intransforming empty lots in their neighborhoods into productive safe hangshyouts with cafes and basketball courts These urban oases will also createa sense of ownership among the youth who would be primarily responsiblefor maintaining the spacesNeighborhood Networks ndash The neighborhood network idea is focused onhelping teens move safely around their neighborhoods These safetynetworks would include better street lighting security emergency buttonsand a team of residents to patrol the neighborhoods

In conjunction with Youth Shout Out Tom Wilson hosted Toni Irving and advocateAquil Basheer for a fireside chat about violence reduction Basheer is currently theCEO of Maximum Force Enterprises where he consults organizations about onviolence reduction strategies Speaking to more than 30 nonshyprofit and communityleaders Basheer provided insights into his unique model for community collaboration Dr Irving opened the discussion by asking Basheer about his 40 years of work in LosAngeles where his titles have ranged from police trainer to community advocate togang interventionist to Executive Director of A Better LA Basheer named a groundshylevel approach as critical to all of his work emphasizing that any program aimed atviolence reduction must have community support and buyshyin to make it sustainable Inparticular he encouraged organizations to discover their communityrsquos sense ofnormalcy ndash opposed to an outsiderrsquos or their own ndash and make achieving that level themark of success ldquoGive the people in your communities time and space to tell youwhat they needrdquo he said ldquoThey know better than anyone else how to get theirneighborhoods healthy and on trackrdquo

Childrens Home + Aid wins $1 Million in Chicago Design Competition

We extend congratulations to Childrenrsquos Home + Aid for their winning proposal in theChicago Design Competition Their winning project a partnership with Youth AdvocatePrograms Inc combines cognitive behavioral therapy with intensive advocacysupport for 220 atshyrisk youth in Englewood and West Englewood The Chicago Design Competition gave organizations the chance to explore programswith the potential to reduce violence in Chicago and be replicated nationally Theselection committee made up of experts in juvenile justice youth services andadolescent development chose the winning proposal from over 200 applicants Childrenrsquos Home + Aid was not the only winner announced Additional grants of$300000 were also awarded to the David Lynch Foundation and the Sweet WaterFoundation for smallshyscale pilot projects Winning projects from the Chicago Deisgn Competition will be supported by GIC theJohn D and Catherine T Macarthur Foundation and the Pritzker Pucker FamilyFoundation The University of Chicago Crime Lab will provide an intensive evaluationfor the winning proposal to analyze the programrsquos outcomes impact and costshyeffectiveness

GIC staff has been working tirelessly over the past few months to review grants forfour sets of award cycles Special thanks to the review committee who helped usfinalize selection criteria and recipients for our Summer 2015 Grants That committeeincluded representatives from United Allstate Boeing Models of ChangeMacarthurFoundation Illinois Justice Project and The Chicago Community Trust As of this week we are pleased to announce the following grant recipients for summerfunding A total of $960259 in awards will support 860 youth this summer

Alternatives Inc Restorative Justice Specialists will provide intensive trainingand projectshybased learning to current and potential Peace Ambassadors fromthree current schools supported by Get IN Chicago (Douglass Robeson TEAMEnglewood)Black Ensemble Theater BEs Summer Job Training For Youth is an 8 weeksummer employment program for practical job training in technical theater (setbuilding lighting costume stage management marketing) and performance Participants will also develop write produce and market their own scripts to beperformed onstageThe Chicago Urban League CULs Summer Immersion will guide youthto develop positive selves cultivate healthy social bonds and achieve importantstageshyappropriate milestones The focus of the summer session is careerdevelopment and the activities will help participants become jobshyready throughtraining and engagement in workshyrelated activitiesChildrenrsquos Home + Aid CHASI will provide its Safe Connections program whichconsists of individual and family therapy using a TraumashyFocused CognitiveBehavioral Therapy (TFshyCBT) model and group therapy using the StructuredPsychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress (SPARCS)approach in Englewood and West EnglewoodKLEO Community Family Life Center KLEOs Violence Free Zone summerprogram will keep youth safe as they complete employability and sociallearningbehavior therapy MetroSquash Metrosquashs holistic program model challenges studentsrsquo mindsand bodies In the summer program 100 young people will participate in theMetroSquash Academic Squash and Enrichment Camp Smart Chicago In Smart Chicagos YouthshyLed Tech program students will learnhow to build websites generate revenue and get jobs in the growing technologyindustry They will also learn about career opportunities and gain introductorycontent on game design and app developmentTeamwork Englewood Teamwork Englewood will administer the EnglewoodYouth Police Baseball League The program incoporates local police officers asmentors coaches and team managers and its practices include Life Skilllessons for youth aged 9shy12 Westside Health Authority WHAs ldquoBand of Brothersrdquo program is an interventioninitiative targeting African American male youth aged 13shy19 that are gangaffiliated justice involved (2 or more arrests) andor adjudicated from CookCounty courts in Austin The program will provide mentoring skills training anda service learning project with local police Youth Guidance YGs summer programming targets incoming freshman andmatriculating sophomores in need of additional supports Programming includesathletics arts restorative justice service learning vocationalemployment

Announcement Violence Response Initiative

GIC announces a call for letters of interest from organizations for our specializedcollaborative response to summer violence We know that violence peaks in thesummer months and its devastating effects are not limited only to those in theline of fire but the entire community as well

GICs goal is to provide a coordinated response to summer spikes in violence ndashespecially gun violence ndash in seven Chicago communities where rates of crimeand violence remain disproportionately high Austin Englewood Humboldt ParkNorth Lawndale Roseland South Shore and West Englewood

Funding will be provided to a nonprofit organization(s) that can workcollaboratively with Get IN Chicago to implement a specialized response tocommunity violence that includes implementing a traumashyinformed intervention inthe aftermath of a shooting to address the impacts of violence in specific Chicagocommunities

We extend congratulations to Childrenrsquos Home + Aid for their winning proposal in theChicago Design Competition Their winning project a partnership with Youth AdvocatePrograms Inc combines cognitive behavioral therapy with intensive advocacysupport for 220 atshyrisk youth in Englewood and West Englewood The Chicago Design Competition gave organizations the chance to explore programswith the potential to reduce violence in Chicago and be replicated nationally Theselection committee made up of experts in juvenile justice youth services andadolescent development chose the winning proposal from over 200 applicants Childrenrsquos Home + Aid was not the only winner announced Additional grants of$300000 were also awarded to the David Lynch Foundation and the Sweet WaterFoundation for smallshyscale pilot projects Winning projects from the Chicago Deisgn Competition will be supported by GIC theJohn D and Catherine T Macarthur Foundation and the Pritzker Pucker FamilyFoundation The University of Chicago Crime Lab will provide an intensive evaluationfor the winning proposal to analyze the programrsquos outcomes impact and costshyeffectiveness

GICs goal is to provide a coordinated response to summer spikes in violence ndashespecially gun violence ndash in seven Chicago communities where rates of crimeand violence remain disproportionately high Austin Englewood Humboldt ParkNorth Lawndale Roseland South Shore and West Englewood

Funding will be provided to a nonprofit organization(s) that can workcollaboratively with Get IN Chicago to implement a specialized response tocommunity violence that includes implementing a traumashyinformed intervention inthe aftermath of a shooting to address the impacts of violence in specific Chicagocommunities

Childrens Home + Aid wins $1 Million in Chicago Design Competition

We extend congratulations to Childrenrsquos Home + Aid for their winning proposal in theChicago Design Competition Their winning project a partnership with Youth AdvocatePrograms Inc combines cognitive behavioral therapy with intensive advocacysupport for 220 atshyrisk youth in Englewood and West Englewood The Chicago Design Competition gave organizations the chance to explore programswith the potential to reduce violence in Chicago and be replicated nationally Theselection committee made up of experts in juvenile justice youth services andadolescent development chose the winning proposal from over 200 applicants Childrenrsquos Home + Aid was not the only winner announced Additional grants of$300000 were also awarded to the David Lynch Foundation and the Sweet WaterFoundation for smallshyscale pilot projects Winning projects from the Chicago Deisgn Competition will be supported by GIC theJohn D and Catherine T Macarthur Foundation and the Pritzker Pucker FamilyFoundation The University of Chicago Crime Lab will provide an intensive evaluationfor the winning proposal to analyze the programrsquos outcomes impact and costshyeffectiveness

GICs goal is to provide a coordinated response to summer spikes in violence ndashespecially gun violence ndash in seven Chicago communities where rates of crimeand violence remain disproportionately high Austin Englewood Humboldt ParkNorth Lawndale Roseland South Shore and West Englewood

Funding will be provided to a nonprofit organization(s) that can workcollaboratively with Get IN Chicago to implement a specialized response tocommunity violence that includes implementing a traumashyinformed intervention inthe aftermath of a shooting to address the impacts of violence in specific Chicagocommunities
