Have you ever wondered why we sing what we sing and when we sing it in the Mass? The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) have published four volumes of The Liturgical Documents containing explicit directives about everything, including music, to be done (or not done) in the Mass and other Rites. Music is such an important subject that a separate document, “Sing to the Lord, Music in Divine Worship”, was published in 2008. The USCCB wrote in the forward of this book, “It is our duty and our joy as shepherds of the Church to guide and oversee liturgical song in each particular Church.... We pray that this document will draw all who worship the Lord into the fullness of liturgical, musical prayer.” While most music is chosen and coordinated by the parish Music Director, there are times when parishioners may help in the planning, keeping in mind the instructions of the USCCB. Are you planning a wedding? The documents are clear that “secular music, even though it may emphasize the love of the spouses for one another, is not appropriate for the Sacred Liturgy. Songs that are chosen for the Liturgy should be appropriate for the celebration and express the faith of the Church.” Are you planning a funeral? “Psalms are given ‘pride of place’ in the funeral rites because they powerfully express the suffering and pain, the hope and trust of people of every age and culture. Above all, the Psalms sing of faith in God, of revelation and redemption.” This directive goes on to say that “secular music is not appropriate for the Sacred Liturgy.” Wedding and funeral music is to be discussed with the music director of the parish who, in coordination with the Pastor, has studied and follows the Documents. Sing to the Lord concludes by saying, “As the Church in the US continues its journey of liturgical renewal and spiritual growth, we hope that this document will be a further encouragement in our progress along that course. The words of St. Augustine remind us of our pilgrimage: You should sing as wayfarers do—sing but continue your journey. WHAT THE BISHOPS TELL US ABOUT LITURGICAL MUSIC. Have you ever wondered why we sing what we sing and when we sing it in the Mass? The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) have published four volumes of The Liturgical Documents containing explicit directives about everything, including music, to be done (or not done) in the Mass and other Rites. The USCCB wrote in the forward of this book, “It is our duty and our joy as shepherds of the Church to guide and oversee liturgical song in each particular Church.... While most music is chosen and coordinated by the parish Music Director, there are times when parishioners may help in the planning, keeping in mind the instructions of the USCCB.

Are you planning a wedding? The documents are clear that “secular music, even though it may emphasize the love of the spouses for one another, is not appropriate for the Sacred Liturgy. No doubt we are all familiar with the phrase money is the root of all evil. However, this is not correct. In 1 Timothy 6:10, the phrase is actually the love of money is the root of all evil! There is nothing wrong with money itself. It is how we use, misuse or abuse money that causes problems for ourselves and others. How we use and spend our money says a lot about who we are and how we treat others. When Jesus speaks to us, a reminder about the poor and the needy are always included. Through the words of the prophet of Amos in the first reading this Sunday, we are reminded and challenged not to abuse or cheat in any way those who are poor. Jesus continues this message in the gospel. He tells the parable which sounds like he is encouraging dishonesty. A servant who looks after his master’s property is accused of misusing it. He is sacked, but before he leaves he has to hand in his final account. He takes this time to rearrange his master’s account with those who owe him money. He reduces their debts and loans and by the time he is finished, the merchants end up owing him for his cleverness. When it mattered most, this clever steward wastes no time in taking immediate and practical action to safeguard his own future. Jesus is not praising this man for his dishonesty and shrewdness, but for his skill in coping with a crisis quickly. Again, this in no way is encouraging and promoting the misuse of money. If this (dishonest) man can use his master’s money to ensure his own job, how much more will those who are honest use their money to promote and build the Kingdom. This is not saying that you can buy your way into the Kingdom. It is to recognize that if our money and wealth are used inappropriately or are not connected to the values of Jesus, the gospel and the Kingdom, then people suffer, usually the poor. Both Amos and Jesus speak about social justice and taking responsibility for our own actions. Our prayer life has to influence how we speak and behave. How we use money and treat each other says a lot about the quality of relationship with Jesus. If money talks, what do I hear my money saying to me? Dear Parishioners,

In light of last Sunday’s Gospel, I

thought I would share this nice

reflection I found in the Catechism of

the Catholic Church:

“The process of conversion and

repentance was described by Jesus in the

parable of the prodigal son, the center of

which is the merciful father: the

fascination of illusory freedom; the

abandonment of the father’s house; the

extreme misery in which the son finds

himself after squandering his fortune;

his deep humiliation at finding himself

obliged to feed swine, and still worse, at

wanting to feed on the husks the pigs

ate; his reflection on all he has lost; his

repentance and decision to declare

himself guilty before his father; the

journey back; the father’s generous

welcome; the father’s joy – all these are

characteristic of the process of

conversion. The beautiful robe, the ring,

and the festive banquet are symbols of

that new life – pure, worthy, and joyful –

of anyone who returns to God and to the

bosom of his family, which is the Church.

Only the heart of Christ who knows the

depths of his Father’s love could reveal to

us the abyss of his mercy in so simple and

beautiful a way.”

I wish to emphasize how “anyone who

returns to God and to the bosom of his

family, which is the Church,” is made to

be pure, worthy, joyful, and to receive

newness of life. Knowing the merciful

heart of our God, why would we ever

hesitate to run back to him? Chase the

grace!

Peace, Fr. Kyle
