The CoverIf you’re like most of us, you keep your YLO (Youth Leaders Only) booksstored on a bookshelf. When you wantto search for a song or video that dealswith a certain topic, slide each book out a couple of inches and read thethemes and featured articles for eachissue. Cool!

The IndexTake a look at the index or “table ofcontents”—notice the colored bars? They represent sections in the book and they clue you in on which albums /Bible Studies are “Main,”“Mild,”or “Hot.”You will notice in the Bible Studiessection that each Leader Guide / StudentGuide is color-keyed the same way.Wow! Someone’s been thinking!

Featured ArticlesEach issue of YLO has a certain “flavor.”Around that theme are a couple of“Feature Articles” as well as some of theother items you have in your YLO box. These articles give you insight into theheart and ministry of some of themusicians included in the YLO box.

Bible StudiesWhat makes Youth Leaders Only morethan “cheap music” are the music-based Bible Study resources providedfor you to use in your programming.Finding good Christian music isn’t hard, but coming up with ways to use it inyour ministry with teenagers takes time, talent, and energy. Real-world youthleaders write the Bible Studies; thesessions are field-tested and proveneffective with real-world teenagers.

Thematic ListingNot every song on every CD has a Bible Study written for it. That doesn’tmean you can’t use those other songs in your ministry with students.

Modern Worship SectionIn this section you’ll find encouragingand enlightening resources to help youdevelop your youth’s worship ministry. You’ll find articles from recent SPINversions of YLO or other worshipleaders and Lead Sheets of songs from some of the CDs in this YLO.Although they are not really the kind of Lead Sheets most bands use, thesepages of “lyrics with chords over them”are a great help when you want to teachthe high school praise banda new tune. Many youth leaders tell us that the LeadSheets are an invaluable resource.

re:TunedTake advantage of some popular secular songs to introduce a theme, supplement your regula Bible Studylesson, or outreach event. Use theopening questions and discussion ideas to get your students talking and thinking about the theme.

ReviewsNot every available contemporaryChristian music CD can make it into the YLO box. So, we try to give you ataste of what else is available in yourlocal store. Since interlínc often gets“pre-release” copies of upcoming CDs,we can give you a “heads up” to newreleases that might be just right for youand your young friends.

There are far more resources includ-ed in this magazine than the crisis-themed articles. Check out thebehind-the-scenes interviews withJeff Foxworthy (the host of theAmerican Bible Challenge televisiongame show), the band RED, JeremyCamp, and newcomers Everfound.

You’ll want to use the music-basedBible studies built around a song from

each album in the YLO box. Youth lead-ers just like you have created these com-

plete meeting guides to help you use musicas a “hook” to teach God’s Word to teenagers.

Similarly, we have included several re:Tunes –dis-cussion guides that bring a Biblical critique to secular

songs that kids know.

There is so much more here that you can use to be effective inyour ministry with teenagers –chord-charts to the best worshipsongs from the albums in this edition of YLO, and a thematic list-ing of every song on all the albums in this box, to name just two.So go ahead, explore all the powerful resources that you are hold-ing in your hands.

Maybe this magazine will help you keep your dramas from spinning out of control!

Godspeed,

4 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

If you’ve been a youth leader forlonger than, oh, three months, then you’re well acquainted with“drama.” (If you’re immediatelythinking about a stage and actors, then you probably haven’t been ayouth leader very long!) “Drama”happens almost daily in youth min-istry. The causes for it are as manyas you have people involved with you– students, volunteer leaders, parents, school personnel, church bosses, and the like. So, the more people – themore “drama.”

Every once and a while, a “drama” goes spinningout of control. People are talking to each other abouteach other, secret meetings are held, and poison-penned anony-mous letters are sent. That’s when a “drama” becomes a “crisis.”

How you handle crisis will influence significantly your tenure in thatministry or church. We hope this “crisis” themed issue of YouthLeaders Only will assist you when a “drama” goes spinning out of control.

There are other ways that crisis strikes a youth ministry. Althoughwe probably don’t think so, we can inadvertently create our owncrisis. Longtime San Diego youth leader and youth ministry guru,E. G. Von Trutzschler (everyone calls him “Von”) has spelled outtwenty-five ways that we can create our own crisis. Check outwhat he has to say!

We know that there is no way that we can adequately cover suchan important topic in a magazine like this one, and yet the articleswe’ve included might be an encouragement to you, and a goodplace to turn to when things go spinning out of control.

7. Punishing: Never punish the “whole” for the actions of the “few” in the hope that peer pressure will correct the “guilty” party. The group will see this as very unfair! If pushed, this can unite them against you. Deal with “problem” kids as individuals. Act promptly and privately.

8. Not Backing Your Staff: Never let your staff take some blame that you “mutually” share. Never cut down your staff individually or collectively. Never ever cut them down publicly! Your lack of support will dishearten them, make them indecisive, cause some or all to quit, or galvanize them against you. Far better for you to take the responsibility, deserved or undeserved.

9. Failing to admit you’re wrong: No leader can afford the luxury of covering up his pride. A private mistake demands a private apology; a public mistake demands a public apology. The longer you wait to apologize, the more you lose.

10. Being Tardy: Being late or absent to your own activities and programs gives a clear signal to your group of staff and teens that you yourself aren’t interested in that program or that you’re not really interested in them.Be present, prepared, and early to your activities.

11. Implementing the Wrong Idea: Implementing another man’s program, idea, or formula in your group can be disastrous. Because it worked great for him does not mean it will work for you and your group. Go slow.

12. Being a “Buddy”: Acting like a kid instead of an adult cancels your leadership. Reducing yourself to your group’s maturity level to gain their acceptance will be at the expense of their respect and your authority. Kids want you to be what you are, a responsible mature leader. Invariably, a “buddy” or “good guy” cannot discipline and control his group. No effective youth man can afford to “kick back” with his youth group.

13. Pushing Kids: Being a “boss” or a “mom” or, worse, a “sergeant” by forcing, obligating, and sometimes intimidating your kids into doing what you want or what they don’t feel they can do, aren’t equipped to do, or flat out don’t want to do, will at best get half-hearted results, result in a no-show or force a confrontation! A good youth worker knows there are other ways of motivating kids.

14. Being Invisible: It seems few ever think of this subtle way to be bumped from ministry. Your church or supporting agency must know what you are doing and be convinced of its value. Youth ministry isn’t seen by the congregation or the elders/deacons and many times even by the pastor. Youth work is during the week, and often takes place away from the church. You work with many kids whose parents aren’t in the church. Take advantage of your monthly church paper and place colorful reports and photos of your youth program and activities. In sta ff meetings bring the pastor(s) up-to-date on the youth ministry. Communicate your passion and progress with your deacons and elders. Communication isn’t an option; it’s essential to present a visible and productive youth program to your church and/or your supporters. To maintain support and silence critics, communicate!

15. Borrowing Money: Borrowing budgeted money for personal use or usingchurch/organizational equipment for your personal use is very foolish. Nothing good can come of this.

16. Running an Independent Program: Drawing your youth away from your parent organization, teaching a different doctrine, or philosophy, or becoming your own identity will ultimately result in your dismissal.

17. Neglecting Key Kids: Neglecting the children of your pastor, deacons orthe politically influential will have trouble brewing in no time. Parents believe everything their kids tell them about the youth program – good or bad, right, or wrong. If the “key” kids are dissatisfied with you and/or the program, you’re out!

18. Ignoring the Writing on the Wall: Failure to read “trouble signs” and tocorrect potential problems in time sets you up for a future crash that can be fatal to your ministry. Little signals and hints from key church leadership should be seriously considered.

19. Inflating: Don’t get caught in the deadly cycle of “bigger and better” programs, speakers, videos, and fun activities. Trying to outdo yourself canexhaust even the best youth worker to say nothing of his budget. Since what attracts your kids to your program will keep them in your program, make sure you attract kids by using ministry events of true value.

20. Using a Show of Hands: Having your kids raise their hands to indicate how many will come to an activity can kill your activity right there! If the wrong people raise their hands or if people are slow to raise their hands, you are dead! Instead, have a person who is going to the activity give the announcement about it.

21. Canceling Your Meeting: Don’t cancel! Find it hard to cancel! Cancelinggives the wrong signal!

22. Reckless Driving: Driving recklessly can kill you (and others). Rememberthe other side of hot driving; your kids will tell their folks how you drive, andkids exaggerate! And parents always believe their kids! Always be safe andresponsible in all areas of your program, even if the kids plead otherwise! To be respected is better than being popula r.

23. Having Favorites: Hanging out and working with your favorites can backfire, especially if your favorites aren’t the “influential” kids of the church.

24. Seeing Girls Alone: If you’re a guy, never be alone in a closed room (or area) with a girl or even two! Doing so looks bad and can end in disaster! Be cautious. Falling for one of the kids in your youth program will cancel your ministry in shor t order.

25. Going for Compliant Kids: Going after easy, nice, obedient “ho-hum” kids may seem the best course – but take another look. Leader material is anything but compliant. Future “movers and shakers” move and shake andoften at your expense! In most cases, those called troublemakers will be your best future leaders! Go after leaders or you will end up with nothing but a weekly group of non-committed attendees!

Note: “Von” is youth pastor emeritus for Clairemont Emmanuel Baptist Churchin San Diego – he’s a genuine Indiana Jones explorer-evangelist and thedirector of Spectrum Ministries, which works with the desperately poor inMexico’s border towns. He is a popular speaker at camps and missionconferences. He’s also something like 80 years old – and still involved in youthministry! If you want a role model for lifelong youth ministry, Von’s your man.

6 FEATURE ARTICLE

Building a successful youth ministryisn’t easy. Success requires workinghard and using your head. There isno sense in compounding the effortby shooting yourself in the foot, orworse. Here are 25 ways that a youthleader can create a crisis. Avoid themat all costs!

RC ISI

By EG von TrutzschlerSpectrum MinistriesSan Diego, [email protected]

1. Assuming: Don’t assume that things will work as planned. Planning without considering possible problems is foolish. Always have a back up plan and an alternate direction. You look bad when “unforeseen conditions” strip you of your leadership. Murphy’s Law (“If something can go wrong, it will”) can catch you, but O’Reilly’s Law is worse: “Murphy was an optimist!”

2. Public Put-Downs: You win no popularity points by putting down a kid or small group in public or from the platform – even if they deserve it. The sympathy of the group will invariably go with the target of the put down.

3. Blowing a Confidence: When you share information given you in confidence, you quickly lose respect from the embarrassed individual and ultimately from the whole group. Your integrity and credibility are shot! Reading private notes or correspondence publicly, no matter how funny it seems, will backfire every time. Here’s what you do if the teen is going to tell you something very confidential and asks you to promise never to tell. Before he reveals his information say, “Of course I won’t betray your confidence. However, if it is something too big for us to handle, you will have to trust my love for you and my wisdom to do what I feel necessary for your own good or the good of the others involved. You have to give me that liberty.”

4. Putting Down Parents or Family: Blood is truly thicker than water. Youcan’t win siding with a kid as he complains about his parents or family. Better to reinforce his gut level feeling that his family is concerned about him and that they want to trust him and love him.

5. Losing Your Temper: Blowing up in front of your group or with one or more of your youth does irreparable harm to your integrity and right to leadership. You can’t undo a scene like that! Never blow your cool! Your kids may forgive you, but they will never forget the occasion.

6. Blaming: Think and get the facts right before you lay any blame on anyone. We aren’t called to be detectives. First, take time to cool off. Then realize that, as the leader, you may have to accept the blame – deserved ornot. Deal with the responsible party/parties later and privately.

After the usual catch up about family and life, hegets to the point of his call, which is a lot moreserious than our normal conversations. I can hearin his voice he is a little tentative when bringing upthe situation.

Judy, the church’s gap-year (or intern) youthleader has started to date one of the kids in thegroup. Apparently, they are very much in love;and, apparently, the relationship has been goingon for a while.

It only came to light when one of the other youthleaders on the team raised some questions abouthow much time Judy and this boy were spendingtogether. Other leaders had also noticed that thatJudy always picked this boy to do things in thesessions over and above other members of the group.

My friend John was a little unsure what to do.Judy is 18, and the kid is 17. Other church kids ofsimilar ages are dating, and no one has a prob-lem. He was surprised he hadn’t noticed thisgoing on before, but as a busy pastor he hadtrusted Judy with the youth ministry and thoughtshe knew the boundaries of the role. I could hearthe disappointment in his voice.

As he asks the next question, I think he alreadyknows the answer. But he asks it anyway: Shouldhe treat this relationship differently because Judyis a youth leader, or should he just let it go likeother relationships in the youth group?

The Bigger IssueOne of the causes stems from the way we trainyouth leaders. We are usually good at trainingpeople about typical leadership tasks, but wedon’t talk much about the costs of leadership. When we accept the call to lead God’s people, certain parts of our lives are not our own anymore.Certain life decisions have to be taken wearing aleadership hat, not just a personal one. This is oneof the harsh realities of being in Christian ministry—and especially youth ministry.

Rarely do I meet young leaders who are aware ofthis. They are typically caught up in the passion ofdoing the work today rather than the difficult sac-rifices necessary to sustain it for the long haul.

Was it Judy’s fault that she crossed the boundaryof leadership and child protection and became

romantically involved with a kid in the group? Orwas it the church’s fault for not telling her this situation should never have happened in the firstplace, however normal it may seem amongst her friends?

Leadership comes at a cost. Our ministries aregoing to test us at times. Certain young people inour groups may become attractive to us, seemingto offer us things our current relationships don’t.When this occurs, we need to stand firm in ourfaith and make sure we act appropriately. Wemight be flattered by the attention we receive, but we should flee from such thoughts andactions quickly and without hesitation. We shouldbe aware that we have to make decisions asyouth ministers that affect our lives outside of our ministries.

How I RespondedAs I listened to John, I knew that some of thequestions I was about to ask him were going tostrain our friendship. They are the same questionsthat I would ask any youth minister who camewith the situation of a volunteer who was startingto date a kid:

• Has anyone ever told the leader that this iswrong or shouldn’t happen?

• Has the leader ever been through Safe Sanctuaries or other child protection training?

• What other training was given to the leader before starting the role?

• Has the leader’s role been specifically spelled out in some type of agreement?

• Have the leader been taught about the personal cost and sacrifice that leadership entails?

These can be hard questions, especially as theycan reach into and question deeply the Pastor’srole in setting up the youth leader’s job. Johnexplained that he assumed Judy knew what theboundaries were and that she had undertakenyouth ministry training prior to being approved asa leader. The assumptions made by John arecommonplace, unfortunately.

Not many people spell out the expectations ofwhat is appropriate and what is not, and what itmeans to take on a leadership role in the church.Over the past decade in the United Kingdom, wehave seen a move to start recruiting volunteers ina similar way to full-time youth ministry workersand clearly spelling out what is expected of them.

If John had done this with Judy, she would haveknown what was appropriate—and that the rela-tionship she had started with the kid in the groupwas not and never would be. I explained to Johnthat if this were in a school, Judy were a youngteacher, and she were having a relationship with apupil, we wouldn’t be having a conversation likethis. It’s not just full-timers or gappers, but volun-teers, as well; we need to clearly state what theboundaries are. If the youth leaders are not happy

with these terms, they need to step down fromtheir roles.

Judy was left to make a hard decision: should sheend the relationship with the kid in the group orstep down from her position? If she steps downand wants to continue her youth ministry careershe would have to answer questions about whyshe stepped down from her position for manyyears to come. Her explanation would likely createdoubt around her ministry, and she would be opento serious questions.

What I Would Do DifferentlyA few months later, John called me again toupdate me on the situation. The church hadreviewed all their volunteer agreements in theiryouth and children’s ministry. They had made sure that everyone was well aware of their rolesand responsibilities and what was appropriatebehavior. They had made sure all the leaders par-ticipated in child protection training and that anyyoung leaders were being trained in an appropri-ate way so that this type of situation wouldn’thappen again.

Judy decided that her long-term calling was toyouth ministry, so she ended the relationship andsought out appropriate training. The cost to herleadership was that she had to separate herselffrom the kid she was dating, stand apart from herpeers in the church, and recognize that God’s call-ing on her life was more important than her rela-tionship with another person. She accepted thecost of Christian leadership.

Questions to Consider

• Have I considered the costs of Christian leader ship? What boundaries do I tend to push that need to be solidified?

• In what creative ways can I help train others regarding appropriate boundaries beyond a list of dos and don’ts?

• What barriers stand between clear communication of expectations and boundaries to all leaders—both paid and volunteer, regardless of age—and how can I overcome them those barriers?

One of our key YLO members volunteered to share his current crisis situation. We’ve kept this anonymous

When was the last time you oryour ministry was in a crisis?

I’m in one right now.

Last Sunday, our pastor announcedto the church that he would be tran-sitioning into a full-time counselingministry within a few months.

So what is the crisis? Well, I haveexperienced this before –a new sen-ior pastor, a new philosophy, andunfortunately a new staff. In May of2009 I had just come home from ourbiggest and best weekend retreat. So when I got an email from the newsenior pastor asking to meet with methat morning I expected nothing butpraise—well, maybe praise and araise! Instead, I was told that theDeacons had met on the Thursdaybefore the retreat and decided to askfor my resignation –effective immedi-ately. I was not allowed to say good-bye to my students or to the church, and told I was not allowed to evenspeak with my students. The rea-son? I was “too contemporary” andthat I “didn’t fit in here.”

The actual truth came to light whenthe new pastor’s best friend’s sonwas hired as the youth pastor.

Gotta love church politics.

Within a matter of days I was job-less, homeless, and completely des-perate. For the next year my family(wife and two children) lived in a one-bedroom apartment, worked oddjobs, and struggled to put food onthe table.

I’m not looking for a pity party. Trustme I know I’m not the only youthpastor to experience this.

Unfortunately, this story is far toocommon within the church. Quitefrankly, it sucks! (If that is too strong,go with “stinks.”)

It was almost a year to the day laterthat we moved to a different stateand joined the staff of an amazingchurch. Early on we knew thischurch was different. Grace was notjust a theology, it was a reality.People lived in it and through it. Wewere home. Jeans? Yep! Coolmusic? Yep! Supportive pastor andboard? Yep! Finally, a church where I “fit in”!

So when I heard the pastorannounce his resignation lastSunday, I immediately started to

relive the crisis from just a few yearsago. I’m not just worried about myfuture, but for the future of thischurch I love. The church is less thanten years old and just built a $1.5million building. It was formed as theresult of an ugly church split whenmy pastor resigned in the midst ofturmoil. Five hundred people fol-lowed him, and they started over.

Just like last time, board membersare telling me, “Don’t worry, your jobis safe.” But I am worried. I don’tknow what the future will bring. Thethought of moving again –with adaughter in her sophomore year ofhigh school, a son in sixth grade, and a newborn –scares me to death.

So I’m wondering, will this time willbe different? Will my family and I sur-vive the transition, or will I besearching those youth ministry jobsites? Will my kids graduate from theschools they love, or will they haveto make new friends –again?

I know the answer for living througha crisis. Be still, don’t worry, pray, and seek His face. (Psalm 46:10;Philippians 4:6-7; Matthew6:33) I’ve shared those verses with

others in crisis. I’ve walked alongside broken and desperate people. Iknow the “answers.”

But I’m struggling. I want to trustGod. I want to believe our churchleadership. I want to be here foryears to come. I want to be faithfulno matter what happens.

But I’m struggling.

Even as I write this someone justposted this verse on Facebook.“Give your entire attention to whatGod is doing right now, and don’tget worked up about what may ormay not happen tomorrow. God willhelp you deal with whatever hardthings come up when the timecomes.” (Matthew 6:34 MSG)

I know. I know. I’m trying. I’m tryingto be still. I’m trying not to worry. I’m trying to pray. I’m trying to seek His face.

So if you have been through it, goingthrough it, or it’s coming –pleaseknow you are not alone. As much asI may not “want to hear it” myself, Iknow God’s Word is true. So, as best as possible – be still, don’tworry, pray, and seek His face.

Walking With EmotionalZombies

Zombies have infected our culture like never before.Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse can be a fun dis-cussion with students, but the real emotional devastation is when an unexpected crisis infectstheir lives.

Any crisis can cause us to become emotional zom-bies because in a crisis our hearts and our heads dis-connect. This disconnection serves as copingmechanism so we can survive the unimaginabletorment that feels like we’re walking through anever-ending valley of the shadow of death.

Common valleys within student ministry can be a suici-dal student in your church or community, auto acci-dents, drugs, and alcohol related tragedies, and otherheartbreaks that shape us for a long time.

When you and your group are ambushed by a crisis, youhave to walk alongside your students and families and pointthem to God’s promises withoutsounding like a robot reading theproper verses that your PastoralCare 101 book outlined for you.

Before you can help them, youhave to understand the grievingprocess. Kübler-Ross originatedthe “five stages of grief” model.Whether it’s a child dealing withthe loss of her puppy, a middleschooler breaking up with his“significant other,” a familygoing through a divorce, or anational tragedy, emotionalzombies go through the fivestages at some level. DABDA isused to remember the stages of

Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression andAcceptance. Google “Kübler-Ross” and you’ll getmore information, but the part to know for now isthat this will be a repeating cycle for a while, depending on the intensity of the event.

I help youth workers with through the NationalNetwork of Youth Ministries and Simply Soul Care,

and I’m also a part-time hospice chaplain. Whenhelping families deal with the loss of loved ones, the #1 thing I tell them is, “There’s no wrong wayto grieve.” That’s also true with any other crisis. We

are each uniquely wired, and we each deal with paindifferently. People need to be given permission togrieve according to who they are.

Because the heart and the head disconnect during acrisis, our role is to whisper the truth that people need

to hear. Feelings are natural and need to be expressed, but we have to think through the process properly. The

danger for some is that they want tosuppress their feelings and not

deal with them. If they don’t, itwill hurt them down the roadand possibly for a lifetime.Remind them that God’s graceis sufficient for them, evenwhen they want to yell at God.We must be foolish enough totrust God to keep His promis-es, even if we don’t understandwhy bad things happen.

The rain falls on the righteousand the unrighteous – God iswith us in the storm, and Hewill see us through the storm.

How have you gotten your ownkids to study the Bible?Well, my kids went to a Christianschool, so my wife and I figured theygot most of the formal stuff, there inthe classroom. We kind of wanted tomake sure they “see” it in action. So,when my oldest was 14, a bunch ofus took our oldest kids with us on amission trip. So my shy little girl, whowouldn’t spend the night at hergrandmother’s house a mile away, went with me to Kenya to work withpeople there. She came back andsaid, “There ought to be somethingkids here can do. I know kids don’thave much money.” So, she did someresearch online and learned that morekids die in Africa die of Malaria thananything else. She found a placewhere she could buy mosquito netsfor ten bucks. She started bakingcupcakes and doing car washes –and my shy child starting getting localrestaurants to give her a night andshe would set up a little table about it. By the timeshe was in 10th and 11th grade, she was flyingaround and speaking to youth groups about havingbeen there and what she was doing. By the timeshe was a senior, she was invited tothe White House to speak to a con-ference of kids who are changing theworld. Now she’s a senior in collegeand helps run the Compassion pro-gram at her college campus and hasraised over $2M to buy about 200Knets. I said to her, “That’s 600K kidsthat probably won’t get Malariabecause you took one small step.”She’s been to Africa five times. Forher, the Bible is alive in the doing. That’s probably what she’ll end updoing with her life, working for a non-profit.

Recently, someone was interviewingher and asked, “Is it wei rd for you tobe at the high school lunch room andthey’re talking about what pants orsunglasses they’re going to buy, andyou’re raising money for these nets?”She said, not wanting to judge any-one, “Well, that’s not their fault. I’vejust seen something they haven’t

seen. But because I have seen some-thing, I have to respond.”

You have the attention of thou-sands of church youth workersright now – anything you wantto share with them?Well, for years and years, on Tuesday mornings I’ve led a smallgroup at a homeless mission in mycity. (Jeff adds humbly, “not for pub-licity or anything like that, obviously.”)We started out with about 12 guys, and now I have about 20 guys that help and it’s grown to 120 homeless guys.

There is probably a connectionbetween where these guys are at,and young people today. That mes-sage is: everybody wants to be worthsomething. You know, I think that’sthe struggle for youth groups andteens. ”Where do I fit in?” “Do I mat-ter?” “Am I relevant?” And God

answers that He showed it right there at the cross:“You’re worth EVERYTHING to me. EVERYTHING.Look right there, that’s what your worth to me.”

If you could ever get that in the heartof a kid, then I think they would quitworrying so much that “I have to dothis to be liked” or “I have to do thisto fit in.” They would understand whoGod is and how He feels about them– that it’s not based on their good-ness but on HIS goodness. That’swhat makes it a perfect love, becausethen the things you do, you do inresponse, not because you “love” somuch, but because you’re “loved” so much.

I felt like that would be an appeal to someone whois outside of having faith.

What is your goal with the show?To make the message of God appealing to some-one who doesn’t know it. That’s real important tome. Those people are going to ask themselves,“What would make somebody spend their freetime collecting food for somebody?”

What’s your favorite verse, passage, or story?I should probably be concerned about this, because I’ve never heard anyone else say it’s theirfavorite verse, (laughs), but mine is Galatians 1:10

– “Am I now seeking the approval of man or ofGod? Or am I trying to please people? If I were stilltrying to please people, I would not be a servant ofChrist.” In the business of comedy, you depend onpeople’s approval in order to make a living. I don’twant to get caught up in that. I’ll give you anexample. In my career, I’ve probably turned down6 or 7 movies because they were going to be acouple of months out of the summer and I’d lookat my kids and think, I’ve only got 4 more sum-mers with them, I’m not giving one away.

I love what I do. I still think, “I can’t believe I gotaway with this.” It’s what I do, but it’s not who I

am. It’s NOT where my identity is. If itwent away tomorrow, that’s okay.

The truth of the matter is, we’re nevergoing to please everybody. I dobelieve if I live my life in a way that’spleasing to God, I mean really, howcan someone else get upset with that?

Are your kids involved in ayouth group?Yeah, but they’re 18 and 20 now. Myyoungest is a senior in high school.Just won homecoming queen Fridaynight, but asked me on Saturday,“Hey dad, will you go with me on amission trip to Kenya.” She’s beenthree or four times. That’s how theyspend their spring breaks, working ina slum in Kenya. She’s popular andshe’s pretty, but she’s been to Africa,Russia and China. She and her sisterhave helped raise money to helpmore kids. They’re living it out.

INTERVIEW WITH

Our friend Josh Griffin, the High School Pastor atSaddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, did this interview with well-known comedian Jeff Foxworthy. Thanks Josh for asking just the right questions! Used with permission from:MoreThanDodgeball.com and Group/Simply Youth Ministry.

Over the years, I’ve had several “guest” postsabout the importance of teaching teenagers theBible. I recently had a chance to fire a few ques-tions at another special guest: comedian JeffFoxworthy, host of Game Show Network’s new TVshow, The American Bible Challenge.

Why did you agree to be theHost of a “game show” aboutthe Bible? When first asked, I thought, “Man, Idon’t ever want to do something thatexploits faith.” The thing that sold meon it, that’s unlike any game showyou’ve seen, is that no one is playingthe keep the prizes for themselves. They’re giving every dime of it away. When you read the Bible, the onlypeople Jesus got sideways with werethe Pharisees. Not the tax collectors,or the sinners. It’s because they hadhead knowledge, but no heart knowl-edge. On this show you need to havethe head knowledge to answer thequestions, but it’s obvious these peo-ple have heart knowledge becausethey’re out there doing these things intheir community whether we’re doinga show or not. They’re running foodpantries, or fighting human traffickingor different diseases, or whatever.

Leadership comes at a cost. Ourministries are going to test us attimes. Certain young people in ourgroups may become attractive to us,seeming to offer us things our currentrelationships don’t. When this occurs,we need to stand firm in our faith andmake sure we act appropriately. Wemight be flattered by the attention wereceive, but we should flee from suchthoughts and actions quickly andwithout hesitation. We should beaware that we have to make deci-sions as youth ministers that affectour lives outside of our ministries.

How I RespondedAs I listened to John, I knew thatsome of the questions I was about toask him were going to strain ourfriendship. They are the same ques-

tions that I would ask any youth minister whocame with the situation of a volunteer who wasstarting to date a kid:

• Has anyone ever told the leaderthat this is wrongor shouldn’t happen?

• Has the leader ever been throughSafe Sanctuaries or other child protectiontraining?

• What other training was given tothe leader beforestarting the role?

• Has the leader’s role been specifi-cally spelled out insome type of agreement?

• Have the leader been taught aboutthe personal costand sacrifice that leadership entails?

These can be hard questions, espe-cially as they can reach into andquestion deeply the Pastor’s role insetting up the youth leader’s job.John explained that he assumedJudy knew what the boundaries wereand that she had undertaken youthministry training prior to being

approved as a leader. The assumptions made by

To support Jeff and this incredibleshow featuring the Bible andChristians in such a favorable way, please encourage your church fami-lies and students to tune-in andwatch The American Bible Challenge.Go to the Game Show Network’swebsite, GSNTV.com, click “ChannelFinder” for local station listings.

Scott Osterbind had the chance to catch up withRED’s guitarist, Anthony Armstrong to talk abouttheir much-anticipated new album, Release The Panic.

You recorded Release The Panic in LA withaccomplished producer Howard Benson. How was this process different from previ-ous albums, and how were you challenged?

It was definitely a challenge. First, we actuallymoved out to L.A. and lived there while we madethe record. None of us have lived like that since wewere in college. With a new producer comes a newapproach to making a record. Instead of workingwith one man, Howard had a team that we workedwith. We had to get the record recorded in 30 daysso it was literally 29 days of nonstop recording–which takes a toll on you physically and mentally. We had been writing for over a year, and we werestill writing while we were recording. We actuallyfinished the bulk of the record there. So there weremany cogs turning all simultaneously.

The first single released on the album iscalled “Perfect Life.” So many people fall in

that trap of pursuing the perfect life –perfect family, job, money, etc. Whatwould you say to that young person seek-ing perfection?

Perfection seems to be the way we all want to live.We try to wrap ourselves in the “best” clothing, blah, blah, blah, and chase down a life that seem-ingly makes everything better. But, that does notexist, at least in the way that the world and themedia say it does. The perfect life isn’t defined byanyone but the person living it. It’s not about livingthe way some one else tells you to live, but aboutbeing content on your own and as a believer. It’sabout living the life that GOD intended.

There are so many people who deal withanxiety. How does the title track “ReleaseThe Panic” address this issue?

Why worry? Seems like a difficult thing not toworry because it is. We are stupid humans that tryto control everything. With that “control” –thingsalways seem to fall apart. We end up worryingabout whatever follows. We tend to complicateeverything in our lives. As believers we need to be

faithful and know that the battle has already beenwon. The trivial things we worry about shouldn’tcontrol us.

RED will be the road nonstop this year. How do you hope your new songs fromRelease The Panic will touch the lives oryour audience?

We hope that our music will inspire anyone whohears it. There’s a state of panic out there. Ourresponsibility is to deliver this inspiration in a bigway. Music is always on the front line. That’s theway we like it: in the trenches.

Being so busy, how do you guys plan onstaying connected and encouraged?

We have a great group of guys that we work with.We stay connected by being connected to a family. That’s what we are: a family. We all have wonderfulfamilies at home and are always checking in andFaceTiming to see their faces. On the road we areall we have, and it’s our job to get into the Wordand feed ourselves spiritually every day. It’s thedefinition of who we are.

What is the overall message ofyour new album?Reckless started as a word thatkept being embedded in my mind,so I looked up its meaning: doingsomething without regards for theconsequences. It occurred to methat “reckless” is a lot like true faith. When I step out in faith, no matterthe circumstance, I know that Godwill take care of me. Paul was abiblical example of living recklesslyfor Christ. In 2 Corinthians, 4 hereturned to Lystra after beingstoned for witnessing to people inthe city because he knew the Lordcalled him to go back. He wrote, “Ionly know that in every city theHoly Spirit warns me that prisonand hardships are facing me.However, I consider my life worthnothing to me; my only aim is tofinish the race and complete thetask the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the goodnews of God’s grace.” (Acts20:23-24) Paul knew that hewould face trials and persecution, but God had placed a call on his lifeand wanted him to surrender hisheart to the Lord. My desire, andthe message in this song, is tocompletely surrender everything toGod. I want to be able to do whatGod calls me to do withoutworrying. That’s being sold out forChrist. I don’t want to miss out onthe fullness of what God has forme, so when God calls me, I wantto be willing to go!

It’s hard to believe this isalready your seventh studiorelease. How has your soundchanged?I think that everything came outalmost better than I expected.Musically and vocally, it’s more raw,but in a good way. Like with“Reckless,” instead of bringing inheavy guitar for the chorus, wecranked up the keys and let thepiano take that melody. We wereover-thinking it in a good way, going back and forth with eachother always asking, “What impactsmost?” My producer and friend,Andy Dodd, and I really put ourblood, sweat, and tears into this. There’s a lot of passion in thisalbum, and it really reflects whatGod is doing in my life!

How did your daughter inspire“The Way You Love Me”?One of my daughters asked me, outof the blue, “Is there anything that I

can do for you that I’ve never donebefore that will make you happy?” Ilooked at her and said, “You don’thave to do anything to make mehappy. You make me happy.” Iheard the lesson God was teachingme through that moment. Just asmy daughter knew I loved her, sodo we know God loves us andthat’s why we desire to please him -out of love and not obligation. “TheWay You Love Me” is almost adirect response to the action ofbeing reckless. When I think aboutwhat Christ has done and the depthof His love, despite how wretched Iam, I want to tell the world aboutHis love. In the same way, we arecalled to love as He loved. Paulwrote, “If I give all I possess to thepoor and give over my body tohardship that I may boast, but donot have love, I gain nothing.” (1Corinthians 13:3) And, “…neitherheight nor depth, nor anything elsein all creation, will be able toseparate us from the love of Godthat is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”(Romans 8:39) That’s God’s love, and that’s the love that I want toshare with others.

How do you hope the messagebehind Reckless penetratesthe heart of those who are inthe audience? My hope is that this albumencourages people to step into thefullness of what God has calledthem to do, and take action. Thesongs are meant to encourage all ofus to go out, not just me. If we canall work together and be in thesame place spiritually, that body ofChrist working together can fuel apassion that is truly great. There ispower in numbers!

Not only do you have newmusic to share, but you havealso written a book called IStill Believe. Can you share alittle bit about what it reveals? It’s a revised and expanded versionof the original that I released lastyear. We worked with Tyndale ongoing deeper into my story andtaking a different approach. Thisbook shows the Lord’s calling onmy life and how that came about, ina lot more detail.

interlínc is excited to introduce a newband of brothers called Everfound. Youcan currently see their ministry inaction on Dare 2 Share’s “Follow” tour.

Talk about your family made their way fromRussia to the United States and how asbrothers you decided to form the band Everfound.

We came to the US in 1996. It was quite theprocess and took a few years to get all thepaperwork figured out because, as youknow, Russia used to be a communist coun-try. We came as religious refugees becauseour family was persecuted for beingChristian. My great grandfather spent morethan twenty years in prison after being vocalabout his faith and refusing to give up hisBible. My parents were denied jobs becausethey were believers. When the paperworkwas approved my parents sold our house, bought plane tickets, packed us up, and wecame to Colorado.

In our family, you begin piano lessons theday you turn six, so music was always partof our childhood. My parents gave us anincredible childhood and always raised us tolive for Christ. We were about thirteen orfourteen when our youth group needed aworship team, so we began fiddling withinstruments. It took a few years for us todetermine who was good at what instrument, but eventually we figured it out and that’show the band was born.

What was your favorite part about therecording process?

We all have different favorite parts becauseit’s such a big process and it’s so personal. We would probably collectively agree thatgetting into the studio with the producers,

and just jamming out until a part felt right is ahighlight. Also, we all love songwriting; so welove the many months we spent writing forthis record.

Can you share a couple of the storiesbehind your favorite songs on the album?

“Never Beyond Repair” really snuck up onus. When we were writing it, we were think-ing of all the broken people who feel toomessed up for even Jesus to fix. When wegot home and let the song sit a little, we real-ized we were the broken people who neededto hear that the forgiveness of Jesus is proofthat we’re not beyond repair. We all havebroken things in our lives that God doesn’trepair in an instant; sometimes the repair is aprocess that can take years. This songreminded us that although repair may be aprocess and can take a while, God promisesthat He will indeed repair us. A few weekslater we debuted the song at a concert andwe’ll never forget when a girl approached usafter the event with scars all across her arms. She said she was feeling hopeless and hasattempted suicide. She came to the concertwith her friend and when she heard “Neverbeyond Repair” she felt God saying that Hewas not done with her yet and that He lovedher. At that moment we knew the song hadto be on the record.

You are touring with the Dare 2 Shareyouth conference to play your musicfor thousands of teens. What is yourhope for this opportunity?

We hope to encourage students to live theirlives for Jesus amid all the pressure theyface to live for other things – to be boldabout sharing their faith with their friends. The chorus of “Take This City” shares what

we hope happens: “So let’s take this city, oursouls are singing, oh there’s a fire in ourbones, I know we won’t be defeated, if Loveis leading, we’re laying down our stones.”Christ has called us to love people and to beHis hands and feet in our relationships, schools, homes, and communities.

Who inspires you to do what you do?

Much of our inspiration comes from God’sWord; nothing beats being in the presence ofGod and having Him show us things in HisWord. Our family also inspires us. I men-tioned my great grandfather spending twentyyears in prison for his faith, and recently wefound out our grandmother was a survivor ofthe Nazi concentration camp called Dachau.

Musically, we’re inspired by bands like U2,Coldplay, My Chemical Romance, Muse, TheKillers, Switchfoot –just to name a few!

Siblings often don’t always see eye toeye. How do you guys work out con-flicts together and keep each other on track?

We have a “no holding it in” policy. We try totalk everything out without letting any hardfeelings settle. We haven’t spent a day apartin probably four or five years –and when thatdoes happen, it’s a bit strange. My parentstaught us to always talk things out. Do wefight? Of course. But, we never leave it unre-solved. When we go up on stage, we want todo all that we can to have our heads andhearts in the right place. We talk about thesehuge themes like “What Love Means” andwe want to make sure we are honest withwhere we’re at. The audience and peoplearound you can see through whatever facadeyou’re trying to put up.

CONGRAduLATiONS! CLASS OF 2013

ThemeSacrifice

ObjectiveGraduating seniors will learn that liv-ing for Christ, and His goals are more important than living for the ways of the world.

Warm UpIs It More Important? –Have the grads stand in the middle of your meeting space and ask the following questions. As you ask the questions, grads that think the first option is most important move to the right of the room; those who think the second option is most important move to the left. Is it more important to…

… eat breakfast, or get to class on time?

… get plenty of sleep, or finish all of your assignments?

… spend time getting to know your roommate, or looking for a date?

… join a frat/sorority, or get a job?

… sleep in on a Sunday, or attend a church?

TransitionExplain that whenever we choose one thing, we may have to sacrifice another thing. If we choose to get better rest, we may not get all our assignments done. If we choose to join a frat or sorority, we may not have the time to get a job. Sometimes we have to give up one thing to experience another. God calls us to live for Christ and as reflections of Christ in our world. Often this requires sacrifice. God calls us to bring His kingdom into the world. TobyMac explains what this looks like in his song, “Unstoppable.”

The SongHand out the Student Guides. As students listen to the song, have them write the reasons that TobyMac can claim that those who follow God are unstoppable.

TransitionTobyMac claims that Christ followers are unstoppable. To be unstoppable, we must keep our eyes on what is to come, and we must call on Christ to be lifted up when we feel tripped up. We must depend on God and His promises to be unstoppable and truly live for God’s kingdom. This takes sacrifice. Paul wrote the book of Phi-lippians at a hard time in his life. Paul had been arrested, but the entire book

speaks of the need to sacrifice in order that God’s kingdom might come in its fullness. Paul challenges us to look at Christ’s example of sacrifice along with his own example and that of some other prominent believers. He chal-lenges all believers to press on.

Bible StudyHave students read Philippians 3:12-16 and then discuss the questions on the Student Guide.

•What kind of sacrifices might an athlete have to make to press on and receive the prize?

•What kind of sacrifices might we need to make to receive the prize that God promised to us?

•A runner must strain toward the finish line, not look at what is behind. What things do we need to sacrifice to follow Christ?

•What is ahead of us if we do make those sacrifices?

Explain, “As graduating seniors, you are at a point in life where you are try-ing to figure out your future. God calls you to follow His will as you step into the future.” Ask, “What might you need to leave behind to claim God’s call on your life?”

Wrap UpHave students refer to the story of Eric Liddell found on page 1235 of the College Devotional Bible. In this story, Eric Liddell, a gold medalist at the 1924 Olympics, made a decision that meant he had to sacrifice the chance to run in future Olympics. That decision was to either follow God’s call to be a missionary to China, or follow his talent and run in races. Have stu-dents read through the story. Then, spend some time in prayerful medita-tion and have the seniors consider God’s calling in their lives and what worldly desires they might have to give up to follow His calling. What must they give up to forget what is behind, pressing on toward what is ahead? Close in prayer.

ThemeLife; Purpose/Meaning

ObjectiveStudents will see a clear Gospel pre-sentation while understanding the real purpose of life.

Special NoteThis DVD is around forty minutes in length. Consider making the video and this study into a special The Purpose event taking approximately ninety minutes to experience.

Warm UpHand out pens and Student Guides. Point students to the What’s The Pur-pose? section of the Student Guide. Either stick together as one group or separate into smaller groups. Take turns explaining the purpose of the random items listed. Don’t be afraid to have fun with the answers! Here are the items: Textbooks / Chopsticks / White Crayons / Apps / Lunchroom Food / Country Music / 500-Piece Puzzles / Teddy Bears

TransitionSay, “Everything has a purpose, although with many everyday items the purpose is debatable. But, what about life – your life, specifically? What is the purpose of your life?” Allow the question to sink in for a few moments of seemingly awkward silence. Allow students to share. After a few respons-es—or if no one responds out loud—introduce the video.

The VideoSay, “These people have found their true purpose in life. And they have a message that applies to your life too! Let’s watch!” Play the video.

DiscussionUse the That’s Legit section to discuss:

•Which of the extreme sports on the video would you most like to try?

•What’s so amazing about Bethany Hamilton?

•What was the message of the video?

TransitionSay, “Francis Chan started off by saying, ‘You’re not an accident. You weren’t just randomly made.’ Then he mentioned that the Bible is the bestselling book of all time. How do these two points relate?” Offer help as needed as you consider the correlation.

Bible StudyHave volunteers read the video quotes, look up and share the Bible verses, and discuss the questions under each section of The Purpose Dissected.

Section 1: Creation – “This film is about people who have found their purpose.”

•Describe “creation” according to the Bible. (Genesis 1:1, 27)

•How is faith different from science? (Hebrews 11:3)

•How do you feel about being made in God’s image? Explain. (Psalm 139:1, 14)

•What makes something a master-piece? (Ephesians 2:10)

Section 2: The Fall – “Just like Adam and Eve, we do what feels good at the moment rather than what God says is right.”

•Is it logical to trade something real for a cheap fake? Explain. (Romans 1:22-23)

•What makes being completely per-fect impossible to achieve for any human? (Romans 3:23)

•Do you think of Jesus as your savior or as your judge? Explain. (John 3:17)

•What makes Jesus real and not an idol? (Isaiah 53:5)

Section 3: Born Again – “Being born again is a one-time decision, and a lifelong commitment.”

•What makes knowing Jesus different from any other religion? (John 14:6)

•What does “believe Jesus with your heart and confess Him with your mouth” mean to you? (Romans 10:9)

•How does knowing Jesus and living by His example change a person? (Galatians 2:20)

•What is Jesus’ purpose for your life? (John 10:10)

Wrap UpChallenge the student to read the My Life’s Purpose quote and consider the questions. Perhaps utilize one of the songs from the DVD as back-ground music. The City Harmonic’s

“Manifesto,” which played at the end, is a great declaration of one’s purpose in life. Be sure to make yourself available afterwards for one-on-one counsel.

ThemeGod’s Presence

ObjectiveStudents will learn how God shows us we are not alone.

Warm UpBring poster board, art supplies, and any other materials (like stones or Legos) for the students to make

“signs.” Have the students form groups of 2 – 4. Have each group design a sign that would communicate the fact that we are NOT alone. Have a prize for the best, most colorful, and/or most creative sign. Have the students answer the questions:

•Do you ever feel alone?

•What speaks to you; what reassures you most that you are not alone?

•How do you feel when you see a billboard about God?

•What do you feel is the best way to communicate to your friends and family that they are not alone?

The SongPlay the song and have the students fill in the blanks on their Student Guide. Here are the missing words: streetlights that guide you home, GPS when you’ve lost your phone, song rockin’ in your headphones, You’ll never be alone

Transition•What three things does the song

mention as signs to let you know that you’ll never be alone?

•Which of those things is most com-forting to you?

•What analogy would you add to the lyric? Write your own lyric. “I’m the…”, and “I’ll be the…”

Bible StudyGod often uses signs to help us remember something important because we are forgetful people. Read the verses and answer the questions.

Joshua 4:4-7 – What is the sign? What were they to remember? Why do you think this is important?

Ezekiel 20:19-20 – What is the sign? What are we to remember? What does

“keep the Sabbath holy” mean? Do you think you keep the Sabbath holy? Why do you think this is important?

Deuteronomy 11:13-21 – What is the symbol or sign? Where are you to write them, teach them, and speak them? Why do you think this is important? Are God’s words/commands this prevalent to you?

Exodus 12:1-13 – What is the sign? What is the significance of the blood sacrifice? Why do you think it is important to remember this? How does this point to the life and death of Jesus?

Genesis 9:12-16 – What is the sign? What will God remember? What should we remember? Why do you think this is important?

Wrap UpGod gives us signs to help us remember His everlasting love for us, and all of the awesome things He has done. He is the creator of the universe. In His creation God said everything was good – except for one thing. Read Genesis 2:18. God knows we have a basic need for fellowship with Him and others.

Have the students come up with three tangible ideas of things they can do this week as a “sign” to others that God loves them and will never leave them alone. Have each student choose one, and then text it to you. Later in the week, check in with your students to remind them, or encourage them in their good works.

Close in a prayer that thanks God that we will never be alone.

ThemeDifficulty; Hope Within

ObjectiveStudents will discuss how God’s love can change lives. Through Bible study and discussion, your students will see that although things may seem too hard and life feels too difficult, God will turn those bad things into good for Christ followers.

Warm UpBefore the students arrive, have the chairs set up as if you will be playing musical chairs. Have a few jars of baby food available, and provide a spoon to each person. Play music like you would for musical chairs, but everyone stays seated, just a jar of baby food is passed around. When the music stops, the person holding the jar must eat the whole jar, nothing can be left. Remember to tell the students that nothing can be wasted; it all has to be eaten. If they can’t finish, they can call on someone else to finish the jar. Then, both people are out and their chairs are removed. Play this for a while.

TransitionWhen the game is over, ask the students to describe how being stuck with the jar felt and how they reacted to having to eat the whole thing. Then ask people who where picked to finish the jars to describe how they felt about being and having to finish someone else’s “problem.”

The SongTell the students that they will be listening to the song, “Nothing is Wasted” by Elevation Worship. Tell them that you will play the song a couple times so that they can fill in their Student Guides. “You are (LOVING), you are (WISE). nothing is (TOO) (HARD) for our God. Nothing is (WASTED). You work (ALL) things for (GOOD). And (NOTHING) is wasted” hand out the Student Guides and play the song.

TransitionNow ask different students to share what they filled in from listening to the song.

Bible StudySay, “Why do bad things happen to good people? If we are Christ’s followers, why doesn’t He keep us safe or free from tragedy, hurts, and the junk that happens to other people? Let’s see whether God has any answers to those questions.”

•Matthew 4:43b – He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righ-teous and the unrighteous. What do you think this verse means? Sounds as though He doesn’t have any favorites. But, maybe what God is saying that bad things will happen to good people. He will not place in a bubble or place a force field around us so that we free from the natural pro-gression of things.

•John 16:33b –In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. From this verse, what is Jesus saying to His follow-ers? He is saying that, “Yes, life is going to rough, but if we follow Him, we will experience victory because Jesus has gone ahead of us and has cleared the way.

•Deuteronomy 31:6 – Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or ter-rified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. What is

God telling us to do when bad stuff does happen to us? He says to be strong, courageous, don’t be afraid, or scared. But, why aren’t those nor-mal emotions when bad stuff hap-pens? Well, we know that God will always be with us.

•Romans 8:28 – And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. What promise does God give us in this verse? He promises that He will work things out for our good, if we are Christ followers. Even with the bad stuff we know will happen, God will work it out so that it will make us stronger, wiser, better, or whatever He wants us to learn from what has happened. Maybe what we go through or how we go through it will be a witness to someone else. But, we know that there is a purpose in the madness.

Wrap UpClose this study by saying, “So we have learned that, yes, we will go through difficulty –but, we can trust in God’s promises that He will be there with us and that He will work it out for our good. We know that with Him in our lives, ‘Nothing Is Wasted.’” Close in prayer.

ThemeGrace

ObjectiveYour students will learn about God’s wonderful love, grace, and forgiveness.

Warm UpGo to a thrift store and buy a few different inexpensive, brightly colored, ceramic plates. You’ll also need clear tape, a hammer, and a pair of safety glasses. Set the plates on a large table in front of the room. As you’re introducing the session, put on the safety glasses and break the plates into pieces with a hammer. Keep the pieces of each plate together. Then have the students divide into teams and attempt to put the pieces together using the tape. Set a time limit and give a prize to the group whose plate is most complete.

TransitionAsk, “Once the plate is broken, can you restore it to its original condition?” Explain that our lives can be a lot like those plates. When we sin, we do damage to ourselves and to others. Sometimes that damage can’t be easily undone. But, there is One who can fix what is broken in us.

The SongSay, “The band Everfound has a song called ‘Never Beyond Repair.’ As you listen to the song, think about things you’ve done wrong and what you can do to make things right.” Play the song.

TransitionSay, “Many people have taken the hammer of sin to their lives and have broken them badly. Let’s look at three stories in the Bible that show us ways to make things right.”

Bible StudyThe Three R’s Of Grace

Hand out the Student Guides. Have the students read Luke 19:1-10 and answer the questions on the Student Guide. Zacchaeus did what he could to make things right. That’s called “restitution.” We should always do what we can to make things right, but sometimes there’s not much we can do.

Have the students read John 8:1-11 (the story of the woman caught in adultery) and answer the questions on the Student Guide. Jesus told the woman to go and leave her life of sin. That’s called

“repentance.” One of the best ways to overcome our brokenness is to turn away from the things that break us in the first place.

Have the students read Acts 9:1-9, 19b-20 and answer the questions on the Student Guide. This is the story of how God turned Saul, the murderous persecutor of the church into Paul, the greatest church planter of all time. It’s a story of “redemption.” God’s redemption of Paul changed his life and the world.

Wrap UpExplain that while Restitution, Repentance, and Redemption can fix our broken lives, just experiencing them is like trying to tape together a broken life. To really be healed and forgiven we need God’s grace. The good news is: He gives it freely. In Christ, no one is beyond the reach of grace.

Finish by reading Romans 8:1-11, 35-39, and have the students answer the questions at the end of the Student Guide. Then close in prayer.

For a bonus project, get a sheet of plywood, some tile cement, and grout, and make a mosaic from your broken plates to remind your students that God can take our broken pieces and recreate us. We are never beyond repair!

ThemeHope; In God

ObjectiveIf we look, we can find plenty to be discouraged about. Living in this fallen world sometimes causes us to default to despair. Today’s lesson will help stu-dents rediscover the hope we find in Christ despite the situation. Students will identify why they can have hope, and how to have hope in the midst of a hopeless world.

Warm Up Hand out the Student Guides. Give your group five minutes to complete the Hope And No Hope exercise. When the time is up, give your group opportunity to share their lists. Once this is complete, use these questions for discussion:

•What causes us to have hope in a person, event, or thing?

•What causes us to lose hope?

•Why do some of our childhood hopes and dreams disappear?

TransitionSay something like, “We can find many reasons to be discouraged and hope-less. Evil in our world brings many disappointments and causes us to despair. In today’s lesson we will be reminded that God is in charge and has given us every reason to have hope. We will look at why we can have hope, and how to have hope regard-less of the challenges we face.”

The SongIntroduce this song by going to the band’s website and learning a little about the group. Give a quick back-ground. Also explain this is the last album for their lead singer, Lacey, who will be taking a rest. Play the song as your group works through the New Horizons, New Hope exercise.

TransitionAsk for volunteers to share the obser-vations they noted. Then, use these questions to reflect on the video:

•What do the words, “Sin with a con-quest, life floods in with a new quest, here’s a voice for the voiceless and a song for the soulless” tell you about hope?

•Why is it important for us, as the song says, “when the times keep going wrong” for us to “go right?”

Say something like, “We can ‘fly’ toward ‘new horizons’ as we keep our eyes on God. Any other focus will bring anguish. Let’s see what the Bible says about the importance of hope.”

Bible Study Have one of your most enthusiastic readers present Isaiah 40:27-31. As he or she is reading, have the group pantomime some of the action words they hear, such as “tired” or “strength.” Encourage the reader to pause on those words. When the passage is finished, ask the students to find a partner to work through the Hope = Strength exercise where they will draw a picture of this passage and then answer these questions:

•What do these words say about God?

•What do these words say about youth/young people?

•What happens to those who hope in the Lord?

Have your youth share their pictures and responses. Follow with these questions:

•What characteristics of God, in these words of Isaiah, give you hope?

•How is God different from youth?

•Why does this give us hope?

•What does this teach us about the danger of putting our hope in people instead of God?

Wrap-UpSay something like, “When we put our hope in the Lord we find strength to not be dependent on how good or bad our situation may be. Believing this is important, but it can be a challenge.”

As a group, create a list on newsprint or a whiteboard of ways to keep our hope in God. Be sure your participants offer practical ideas besides some of the more standard answers, i.e. pray.

Close the time together by praying for one another in this journey of hope.

ThemeRenewal

ObjectiveStudents will experience God’s continued renewal of believers through Jesus Christ.

Warm UpCheck-In Question – Have the students sit in a circle or in your usual Bible study seating arrangement. Tell them that you’ll be asking two “check-in questions” that everyone in the circle will answer. Be prepared with your answers as you will offer the example. First, ask something lighthearted:

•What is your favorite kind of cereal?

•In a movie about your life, who would you pick to play the role of you?

•If you had to pick one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

•Etc. Be creative!

Then ask this more serious, on-topic question: “If you could reinvent one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?” Some possible answers: My “look.” My reputation. My talents. My interests.

TransitionExplain that people often seek a reinvention of sorts, a renewal of whom they are and how people see them. This would be a good opportunity to share a personal example; perhaps you went to college and hoped to escape the type of person you were in high school, or you reinvented your style, taste in music, or changed drastically through a relationship. Share a personal story from your life experiences about seeking this type of renewal.

The SongPlay “Beautiful Things” by Gungor.

TransitionAsk the students how they liked the song. What did they like or dislike about it musically? What did they like or dislike about it lyrically? Did anything in particular jump out at them? If they are slow to answer, don’t hesitate to play the song again, asking them to pay particular attention to the words being sung.

Next, ask the students for some examples of “beautiful things” God has created. Encourage them to think back to their knowledge of creation.

Bible StudyHand out the Student Guides. Use this outline to teach the Bible Study and encourage the students to take notes. Encourage group discussion around the questions under each point.

God created the world, and it was good (Genesis 1:31; 2:1-7; 2:21-22) – God was pleased with His creation, yet He saw a need for more.

•What was left for God’s creation to be complete after the first six days?

•What made God’s creation of man and woman more beautiful than the rest of His creation? (He breathed life into them as He had for no other beings. Adam and Eve were filled with the Spirit.)

When sin became a part of the scene, the world was no longer good(John 3:1-8) – Now we must be born again in the Spirit through Jesus Christ.

•What keeps us from entering the Kingdom of God?

•What are the characteristics of a sinner?

•What does God see in us once we’re “born again”? Something beautiful?

Once born again, we leave behind the pain of sin and enter a new life (Colossians 3:7-14) – God makes beautiful things out of us despite our faults.

•How are we called to live now that we are born again?

•Are we naturally this way, or is it accomplished through Christ?

•What is more beautiful: a life of “anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language” or one of “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience”? Which one do we live?

•Before you knew Christ, how would you describe yourself? What about now? How has He made you new?

Wrap UpExplain that it is sin that separates us from God, but His grace through Jesus Christ has made us new and has made us beautiful once again in His eyes so that we may spend eternity with Him. Make sure to emphasize that this is done through His might and power not our own. Close in prayer.

ThemeLove; Unconditional

ObjectiveStudents will examine what love is, and the attributes that love has.

Warm UpIf You Love Me, Smile –This is an old game that is quite simple. Have youth line up in two lines with the first person in each line facing each other. One side, chosen by you, says, “If you love me, smile.” They can say it with an accent, or with a really goofy face, but those are the only words that can be spoken. If the person across from them smiles, that person is out. The one who spoke the phrase goes to the end of the other line. If the person does not smile, both youths go to the end of the opposite line. Keep playing until there is one winner.

TransitionSay something like, “Often, people have conditions for love. ‘If you love me, do this’ or ‘if you really loved me, you’d do that.’ In reality, love is more than just actions; it is also the state of one’s heart.”

The SongThe song “Love Is All” by Jekob will help put love into perspective by using God’s Word to explain what true love is. Hand out the Student Guides. Have students fill out the Musical Mash section on their Student Guide while listening to the song.

TransitionDiscuss some of the lyrics that really stood out to the students. If there is a unanimous phrase that really stood out to the students, ask why it made such an impact on them.

Bible StudyPass out Bibles, and have student volunteers read the verses aloud. Have the students fill out the Love Is… sec-tion of the Student Guide. The missing words are: Patient, kind, envy, boast, proud, angered, evil, truth, protects, trusts, hopes, preserves.

Ask the students what each verse means. For instance, “Why is it impor-tant for love to be patient and kind?” Allow students time to answer the fol-lowing questions on the Student Guide under Consider This Verse.

•Why do you think there is so much emphasis on love in the Bible?

•Do you think people “love” the way it is described in God’s Word? Why or why not?

•Do you find that loving certain people can be difficult? Why or why not?

Wrap UpThe word “love” is mentioned over five hundred times in the NIV version of the Bible. The significance of love is enor-mous! We know that Christ came with an unconditional love for us, and His sacrifice on the cross was proof. If the greatest thing is love, then challenge students to be great! Have them fill out the L.O.V.E. section on their Student Guide as a challenge for the upcoming week. End with a prayer that we show love to those around us and ultimately represent the love of Christ through our actions and heart.

Love Is…1 Corinthians 13:4-7

“Love is __________, love is __________. It does

Consider This Verse1 Corinthians 13:13“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But, the greatest of these is love”

Why do you think there is so much emphasis on love in the Bible?

Do you think people “love” the way it is described in God’s Word? Why or why not?

ThemeLife; Purpose/Meaning

ObjectiveStudents will see that trusting God will give purpose and meaning for their lives.

Warm UpGather students in a circle and ask,

“Who has played Truth or Dare? What is the craziest thing you have been asked to do in Truth or Dare? How reckless would you say that was?”

Now grab another youth leader and ask him or her to play the Trust Fall game with you. Act as if you are side-tracked and start talking about some-thing else while you are telling them how to play. While you are explaining things walk off making the students think you are really going to let them fall. But, of course, catch them!

TransitionAsk, “Would you say that teenagers are known for doing some pretty reck-less things? We are going to listen to a song by Jeremy Camp called “Reck-less.” (Show a picture of Jeremy.) Does he look like a reckless person?”

The SongHand out the Student Guides. Play Jeremy Camp’s “Reckless” for the stu-dents. While they are listening to the song have them write down the chorus of the song when they hear it.

TransitionJeremy sings about how we play it safe. How difficult is just letting go of what the world expects and putting your faith in God and doing what He wants? Let’s look at some other peo-ple who have done just that. Do you think people in the Bible had a hard time just letting go and following God’s will for their lives?

Bible StudyWhat would you think if I told you that Justin Beiber was giving up all his fame to follow God? We will look at a person who had it all like Justin Beiber but walked away to follow what God had planned for him.

Kirk Cameron. Ever heard the name? What do you know about Kirk? (Show a 45-second clip of Kirk as a young television actor: youtube.com/watch?v=UQiRpt_-ZCU) After watch-ing the link talk to the kids about how big Kirk was in the ’90’s.

Do you know what Kirk Cameron does now? (Show a bit of Kirk witnessing for Jesus in this video: youtube.com/watch?v=gqNDdCzOGTI) How hard would it be to have everything you ever wanted and walk away from it to lead oth-ers to Christ? Do you think people would say that was a reckless thing to do?

Luke 18:24-34

•We spend a lot of time talking about the rich young man who went away sad, but what about the disciples?

•What did Peter say they gave up to follow God?

•Do you think their families thought they were reckless, leaving their homes and families to follow Christ?

•What does Christ say people will earn for following Him?

Jeremiah 29:11

•What assurance does this give us?

•Jeremy Camp says, “The promise of Your Word is all I need. I’ll lay my life down and give it up.” Can we be reckless enough to give up our plans to follow God’s plans for us?

Wrap UpWe may not be rich and famous like Kirk Cameron, but God is calling us to the same thing he called Kirk for: to give up our plans and follow His. God wants us all to be reckless. He wants us to trust Him enough that we let Him give our life purpose –not chasing our own dreams and worldly ambi-tions, but following His purpose for us. Unlike the Trust Fall you saw earlier, God is always there to lean on!

ThemeSalvation; Regeneration (New Life)

ObjectiveStudents will learn that Christ changes a person and makes them new.

Warm UpYou will need two plain white t-shirts for this activity. Make sure one is the pure white color of a brand-new shirt. Make the other one as dirty as you can. Display the shirts to the group. Ask them what it would take for someone to clean the dirty shirt to make it look just like the brand-new shirt. Ask them whether they have any shirts at home that are that dirty.

TransitionExplain that our hearts are dirty with sin. God created the world as pure and clean as the white shirt, and our sin has tainted the world. Ever since sin came along, we humans have been born sinners, dirtying our shirts and hearts all of our lives. Although we are filthy with sin, we can be made completely clean and sin-free on the inside, shining just as brightly as the clean white shirt.

The SongBreak into two groups and hand out the Student Guides. Have one group count the times the phrase “brand new” is used in the verses of the song. Have the other group count the times

“brand new” is used in the choruses. As the track plays, you can point to the

“chorus” group to let them know it’s their turn. (The first lyrics of the song are the chorus.) Then you can point to the “verse” group to let them know it’s their turn. Have them keep track of the number on the Student Guide. (Verses: 10 times; Chorus: 59 times!)

TransitionIf newborns are the ones who are

“brand new” physically, how can a person your age be “brand new?” Can you be “brand new” on the inside? What would that look like?

Bible StudyHave the group turn to John 3:1-21, and read aloud the story of Jesus and Nicodemus. In verse 2, Nicodemus was really confused by what Jesus meant when Jesus described being born a second time. Explain that being “born again” is the same idea as being

“brand new.” A brand-new baby is called a “newborn” precisely because it has just been born. Explain that we can become “brand new” in our soul, just as a newborn baby is “brand new” physically.

Have the group read again John 3:18. Explain that Jesus came to show how dirty with sin people truly are. Many people reject Jesus and His message because they do not want to deal with the difficult truth of how “dirty” their heart is.

Have the group read again John 3:17. Explain that the point of Christ’s coming was not to make everyone feel guilty, although telling the difficult truth about sin does lead a person to feel guilt. His primary purpose, though, was to fix the problem! He wanted to become the bleach that can turn our shirts from filthy to the purest clean. He did this by being a perfectly clean white shirt for His entire life, the only human to do so. Even more,

He died as punishment for our dirty shirts. However, the Father raised Him back to life, to show that Jesus was no ordinary man, but the Son of God Himself!

Have the group read again John 3:16. Explain that believing in Jesus –giving our whole life (and whole shirt) to Him –will result in escaping the punishment for our filthy hearts (and shirts). He makes our souls brand new! Our filth is bleached away, and we are as clean in our hearts as the purest clean white shirt. Our whole attitude and outlook changes, because we now live for Him instead of living for ourselves.

Have the group read Isaiah 1:18. Explain that their sins can be taken away and they can become as clean as clean can be.

Have the group read 2 Corinthians 5:17. Explain that becoming a Christian means a change in all parts of our life.

Wrap UpClose with prayer. In whatever manner is suitable for your group, offer them a chance to make a decision to follow Christ, to be forgiven of their sins, and to be made “brand new.”

PLANETSHAKERS

ThemeGod’s Power

ObjectiveStudents will have discussed, read, and learned about God’s limitless power and how they can see Him at work in their lives.

Warm UpSuper Hero Charades – Before the students arrive, write 10-25 names of superheroes on slips of paper and put them in a bowl. (You can look up superheroes online.) When your students arrive, form teams. Play

“Charades” with these names and when the other team guesses, they must also tell what super power that superhero possesses.

TransitionAsk the group who their favorite superhero is and why. Ask them what super power they would like to have and why.

The SongExplain that the greatest superhero of all times is God – that He created all power and has all power. Tell them they will be listening to a song by Planetshakers called, “Limitless” which speaks of God’s unlimited power. Play the song.

TransitionAsk the students if they heard anything in the song that God cannot do. Ask them what some of the adjectives of God’s power are, and what powers God has.

Bible StudyBegin this section by saying, “What does God’s limitless power have to do with us? The songs states that, ‘I’m saying goodbye to any limitation, I’m saying hello to the God of all creation’, so what does that mean to us? Let’s see what the Bible has to say.” Have a volunteer read a verse. Then discuss with the group what that verse says about God’s power.

•Luke 1:37 – Nothing is impossible for God.

•Matthew 19:26 – Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”’

•Philippians 4:13 – I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

•Isaiah 41:10 – So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

•John 16:19 – I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have over-come the world.”

•Joshua 1:9 – Have I not command-ed you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be dis-couraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

•Romans 8:31 – What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Discuss the common themes of these verses, then wrap it up by saying, “Nothing is impossible for God. We do not need to be afraid because He is with us.”

Wrap UpClose this study by saying, “God is limitless, and since we are Christ followers we have access to His limitless powers – so we have nothing to fear! Did you know that the words, ‘fear not’ appear 365 times in the Bible? That’s one for each day! When we know we have God’s limitless powers, there is nothing to fear! So go out and be a superhero for God!” Close in prayer.

ThemePrayer

ObjectiveStudents will explore the resource of prayer that we have available to us as followers of Christ and will list needs that they will begin to pray for regularly.

Warm UpHand out the Student Guides. Write P R A Y E R in large letters vertically on a whiteboard or tear sheet. Have students work in pairs to come up with words describing prayer that start with those letters. After giving them about 2-3 minutes to work on this, have each pair share some of their words.

TransitionTry to use one or two of the words your students came up with to discuss how we pray in different circumstances. Are our prayers different when life is going smoothly than when we are in the middle of a problem?

The SongAs you play “Need You Now” by Plumb, have students use the Song section of the Student Guide to fill in the blanks from part of the lyrics (the blanks are “beauty” and “holding on”), and answer the questions about the lyrics.

TransitionAfter the song is finished, walk through their answers with them and discuss their reactions. Ask, “What kind of intensity rating would you give this prayer?” 1-10 (10 being strongest) Ask whether they have ever been in a situation when their prayers were at a similar level of intensity. You might share a time in your own life when your prayer was more like crying out to God for help rather than a “thank you, God, for this food” kind of prayer.

Bible StudyThe Bible is filled with examples of people crying out to God for help in all kinds of difficult situations. The word

“pray” appears in the NIV translation of the Bible 367 times!

Direct the students to The Word section of the Student Guide. You can have students work alone or in small groups of no more than four. Instruct them to read all four passages, fill in the blanks, and answer the questions.

Matthew 7:7-8 (Ask, Seek, Knock) (receive, find, have an open door)

John 15:7 (abide/remain in Him, given)

Philippians 4:6-7 (A. worry/be anxious, Pray, Thanksgiving; B. Peace)

1 Thessalonians 5:17 (all the time/constantly)

When they’ve finished, lead the whole group through their answers and discuss the connection between the promises and the conditions. Make sure they understand that we don’t control God with our prayers. He responds with what we need, not necessarily what we want, at just the right time in His plan.

Wrap UpAsk your students to take a couple of minutes to examine their lives and list a few items that they need to pray for (direction, health, ability recall for tests, etc.) Then have them write when they will pray for these items on a regular, daily basis until they see God’s answer. Encourage them to keep that list with them and to share with someone the commitment they have made.

ThemeAuthenticity

ObjectiveStudents will discuss the differences and benefits of living an “authentic” life instead of a “perfect” life.

Warm UpSecret Identity –Before students arrive prepare nametags for every student and leader in your group. On each nametag write a famous person’s name (a historical figure, an actor, sports celebrity, or a popular politi-cian.) As students arrive, place the nametag on their backs. (Don’t let them see it.) Everyone goes around and asks people yes-or-no questions about who is on their back. They can only ask one question of each person. The person who can identify “who they are” with the least number of ques-tions wins.

TransitionAs students make their way back to their seats, discuss:

•Who admired the person who was their secret identity?

•Who are some of the people through-out history that we should admire?

•Who are some of the people today that are admired that maybe shouldn’t be?

The SongSay, “Let’s listen to the new song from a band that I admire called RED.” Original-ly from Pennsylvania, RED is a Nashville-based rock band comprised of Michael Barnes (vocals), Anthony Armstrong (guitar), Randy Armstrong (bass), and Joe Rickard (drums). They’ve garnered two GRAMMY nominations, five GMA Dove Awards, two Top 10 Active Rock singles, three Top 10 Mainstream Rock singles, and 10 consecutive No. 1 hits at Christian radio.

Hand out the Student Guides. Encour-age the students to list some of the attri-butes that we should admire and some of the attributes that the world tells us to admire that we really shouldn’t. Here’s a hint: just think about reality TV.

TransitionDiscuss the lists the students have compiled.

Bible StudyWe started by playing Secret Iden-tity. When we think of some of those famous people, have you ever thought,

“Man, they have the perfect life”?

•What’s your idea of the “perfect life”?

•What does the “world” tell us is the “perfect life”?

•In the song, we heard, “I don’t want your perfect life.” Why do they say that? (Because there is no such thing as a perfect life. The perfect life is a lie.)

•They go on to say, “Nothing wrong, nothing real inside. All I see is a perfect lie.” Why do people want us to believe that “nothing is wrong” with their life? (Try to get students to say “pride.”)

Here are three important factors to living an authentic life:Stop Pretending – Romans 3:10

•Almost every Christian knows or has at least heard this verse, so why do you think so many of us spend so much energy pretending to be perfect?

•What does it accomplish? (Nothing, hypocrisy, etc.)

Stop Lying – Psalm 34:18; 51:17; Matthew 5:3-4; James 4:6What do those verses tell us about being honest with God?

•What are some ways that we’ll lie about our brokenness?

•What are some ways we lie about our relationship with God?

•What do those lies accomplish?

Start Living – Romans 12:2 –The band says it this way, “I will turn, I will walk away. I won’t become you, won’t become you.”

•What are some behaviors of the world that we tend to copy?

•What are some behaviors that we need to turn and walk away from?

Instead of pretending and lying about those things, let’s ask God to trans-form us and change the way we think about those behaviors.

Wrap UpSay, “This lesson can be summed up in one word: authenticity. God wants us to be authentic in our relationship with Him in relationship with others. Pretending you have the ‘perfect life’ doesn’t do you, me, or anyone else any good. Let’s become authentic followers of Christ. That means stop pretending we have it all figured out; stop pretending everything is fine; stop pretending we are perfect. God knows you’re not perfect. We know it too. RED says, ‘I know who I am inside… I’m perfectly broken.’ Let’s live our lives like that. Perfectly broken in the arms of a perfect Father.” Close in prayer.

ThemeGod’s Provision

ObjectiveStudents will learn that when they cry out to God, He hears them, and lovingly gives them His peace.

Warm UpBefore the students meet, set up a barrier (a blanket, a large appliance box, etc.) that can separate one person from the rest of the group. Enlist some students to help with the activity. Each one will be speaking to a member of the group from the other side of the barrier. These students may disguise their voices. Ask for some volunteers who think they have exceptional hearing, and place them behind the barrier. Bring the student volunteers in one at a time and have them talk to the one behind the barrier. After a few seconds, have the one attempt to guess with whom they are talking. After a few attempts, have the students use their true voice. When correctly identifying their peer, bring in the next one.

TransitionExplain that sometimes when we call out to God, He doesn’t seem to recognize our voice. Some days He doesn’t seem to hear us at all. If God were like us, He might not know who was speaking with Him or get it the right the first time. But God hears us immediately and knows our heart!

The SongHand out the Student Guides. Encourage the group to take notes of lyrics they hear while you play Southbound Fearing’s “Something Greater” for them.

TransitionAsk, “Do you have times when God seems unable to recognize your voice when you talk with Him? Maybe it happens more often than you can list! Write down those times under the R U Listening? title.” Discuss with your group some of those times. Share when you felt God wasn’t listening to you.

Bible StudyIn 1 Samuel 23, David had been anointed as the king over Israel but was now running for his life from Saul. Saul was still king. He was jealous and wanted to kill David so David ran and hid in the Judean wilderness. In Psalm 63, David wrote about that experience. In the first verse, David might have felt like God was far from him. There was urgency in his prayers. What words describe the way he felt? (“You are my God.”)

The situation was so bad that David could only go to God. No one else could help him.

•“I seek You earnestly.” David never gave up even though he didn’t hear God’s voice.

•“My soul thirsts for You.” My soul will die without your life-giving refreshing.

•“My body longs for You in a desolate place where there is no water.” I will die in this place without your help.

David was depending on God’s grace and mercy to see him through this tough time. Read Psalm 63:2-8. David remembers that when he was in a bad spot before, God answered him and he was saved.

•What were those areas in his life where he saw God work? Write those ways God helped David under God Helped Me.

God wants something greater for you than just going from one issue to the next. He wants you to have a victorious life. We know from the life of David that God did hear him and rescued him from those troubles. He doesn’t leave us in the desert of life but will provide for our needs. Write down, under What I Need To Do, how you will trust God when times get tough.

Wrap UpExplain that God does want to provide something greater for our lives, and He wants us to call out to Him in the good and tough times. Although you may think that He is not listening, God hears every word. None of us have ever been chased by a crazy king and ended up trying to survive in the desert. That would be bad. If God can rescue David from that, He can take care of our troubles too. Just keep calling out to Him.

Replay the song, and ask the students to reflect on what God will do in their lives when they trust Him. Close with a prayer.

ThemeGod’s Presence

ObjectiveStudents will realize that God stands with them no matter what –even when they feel alone.

Warm UpHave a good old-fashioned balloon stomp. For this, you will need a bag of balloons and some pieces of string. Hand each student a balloon and string. Have the students inflate the balloons until they are about as big as their heads, tie them off, and then tie them to their shins with the piece of string. When you say, “Go”, everyone tries to pop everyone else’s balloon. The last person standing with a bal-loon is the winner. When a balloon is popped, that player is out. If you want, play a couple of rounds.

TransitionAsk your group what playing the game was like? How did they feel when they got out? How does the winner feel?

Tell the students that you want to com-municate the idea of standing alone in today’s session. Hand out the Student Guides and ask the kids to write down

some times when they felt that they were standing alone. These can be any experience like standing alone in triumph (as in our game), being the only one to pray over lunch at school, being picked on, etc. Give them some time to write down their thoughts. When most of them are done writing, ask if some of the students would like to share what they wrote. Let this dis-cussion go on as long as there is good sharing. If you can, note some of these instances on a white board or piece of paper to refer to later.

The SongSay, “A band called Spoken recently wrote a song about standing alone. Let’s listen to it and see how it might add to our discussion. As we listen, jot down any lyrics that stick with you.” Play the song.

TransitionAsk whether any of the students would like to share what they wrote.

Bible StudyMuch of the imagery in this song is taken from the story of Shadrach, Mechach, Abednego, and the fiery furnace, often a Sunday school favor-ite. This story is found in Daniel 3. Ask whether your students are familiar with

it. If so, ask them to recap the story; if not, read the story as a group.

In this story, we encounter three young men who stand for their beliefs. These young men are living in captivity. At this point in history the Jews were conquered by the Babylonians, many of them were taken as captives to Babylon –a city in a foreign land that had a foreign religion. This is the case for these three young men. No matter how nicely they are treated or find their accommodations; they know that they are prisoners in the land they are liv-ing. These young men were living in a hostile environment. Have you ever felt that you were living in an environment like this? How so?

Then the king becomes furious with their actions (actually lack of action), and prepares to throw them into a fur-nace. How do you think they respond? How would you respond?

In Daniel 3:16-18 we read their words –their response is mind blowing! They state that God is in control, not the king. They do not need to defend themselves. They also say that if God wants to save them from the furnace, He will –but if He does not, their faith will remain. This is amazing! Ask your group what they think of this response.

Now return to some of the times your students said they felt as though they were standing alone. Ask them which of those are times when they felt like God was with them or not with them.

Often we think that God is only with us when things are good, and not when things are bad. Yet this story reminds us that God is with us always, in the good times and in the bad. If they are saved from the furnace, great! But, if not, it will not affect their faith. They were prepared to burn for their faith. Yet, we find that they do not. Instead, we find that God stands with them in the fire.

Paul also talks about this concept. Ask one of the students to read Romans 8:38-39. According to this passage, what can separate us from God? (nothing)

Wrap UpLet the group know that God will always stand with them, even when they feel they are standing alone and the entire world is against them. Noth-ing can separate them from the love of God. When tough times come, God is always right there standing beside them, even if they don’t feel it. Close your time together in prayer.

MODERN WORSHIP ISN’T JUST ABOUT BEING COOL

By Russell Evans, Senior Pastor at Planetshakers in Melbourne, Australia

Since we live in a time when everything is based on “image” – we need to make sure that our wor-ship services are more than just cool replicas of an MTV show. I totally believe in being progressive, modern, and cool –but if that’s what defines our worship services, we’re missing the mark.

Jesus actually gave us a great model for com-munication and interaction. He was amazing at speaking the language of His audience. When He spoke with fishermen, He spoke about fish; when He spoke to tax collectors, He spoke about the issues pertaining to them. This is a powerful picture of worship services. We need to speak the language of the audience with which we are com-municating.

I believe the church should be ahead of the world when it comes to relevance. Daniel was head and shoulders above his peers in under-standing and speaking to the culture. He knew Babylonian thoroughly and could communicate it brilliantly. But, he was more than relevant – he was prophetic. He interpreted a dream for a nation and a generation; in other words, he gave them an encounter with God.

Coming back to Jesus, He spoke the language but most importantly, He gave those who came into contact with Him an encounter with God. That’s what our modern worship services should do: create an environment where people can wor-ship in spirit and truth. It’s not either/or, it’s both.

A modern worship experience should have all the elements that communicate the message in a contemporary way. The lights, the sounds, and the look are all important to communicate what we believe. Many people have come to our church and said the production is off the charts. As good as that is, we also want to communicate we are passionate about God. Prayer and passion all help create an environment to experience and encoun-ter God’s presence.

People won’t necessarily remember the lights and screens, but they will remember the encounter they had with God. After all, that’s what worship is all about –encountering God.

Imagine DragonsSong: It’s TimeAlbum: Night Visions

By: Mandy [email protected]

Teaching Point:Christians are constantly trying to fight our sinful nature. Changing our actions is difficult, but not impossible. But, Christ is unchanging, and so is His love for us.

Opening Questions:Think of the last time you wanted to do something you knew wasn’t the right thing to do. Was making the right choice difficult? Why or why not? Are there things you want to change about yourself? What are they and why do you want to change them?

Discussion:“It’s Time” describes someone who comes to the realization that he’s never changing who he is. At times, we may feel that we will never be able to get over certain sins we continue to fall in, but we need to realize that it is a daily battle to deny our sinful nature. Change is possible!

•Read Acts 9. Saul persecuted and even killed Christians! But, he was changed when the Lord appeared to him. From then on he was on a dif-ficult journey. Do we give in to sin because doing so seems easier? What can we learn from Saul’s conversion to Paul?

•2 Corinthians 5:17 – we are a new creation with a clean slate. We experience change! We are no longer defined by our sin; our identity is in Christ.

We have trouble with trusting people when they say one thing and do another. “It’s Time” says, “I don’t ever wanna let you down.” We don’t want to let Christ down. The Lord sees our heart as described in 1 Samuel 16:7. The great thing is that Christ will NEVER let us down. He will always do what He says, and never fail us.

Hebrews 13:8 says that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, yes and forever.” Do you take comfort in knowing that? Isn’t it a relief to know that you can trust Christ in all aspects?

Conclusion:We are in no way perfect. A loving Savior, who is perfect, saves us. We may fall, often, but by realizing that we are a new creation in Christ, we can better face the old sins that weighed us down, and continue to battle those that still come up. Christ will never let us down. He is the same always. May we remember not just who we are, but who we belong to.

Christina PerriSong: Jar of HeartsAlbum: LoveStrong

By: Jeff [email protected]

Teaching Point:The God of creation has a “jar of hearts” of each of the individuals that call upon Him as Father.

Opening Question:What is keeping you from taking that one step toward Jesus?

Discussion:Christina Perri’s song is of heartache and hurt. How often have you given your “heart” only to have it added to a trophy collection of hearts?

In the Bible, David questioned God, even to the point that he was not completely ready to give the Lord his heart fully. However, when he did embrace God and His, plan David remained glad, and he rejoiced. He knew that his body, as well as his heart, would rest secure, even in death. With exuberant praise, he exulted; “God will not aban-don me to the grave.” Not even death would sepa-rate him from God; he would not see decay by lying in the grave of a meaningless existence. God would forever be his portion. (Psalm 16:9-10)

David invited God’s close scrutiny of every aspect of his life. “Test me, try me, and examine my heart and my mind,” he declared to God. He was confident that such a thorough investigation by God would clear him of his enemies’ charges because the Lord’s love was always before him, motivating him to walk continually in the truth of God’s Word, keeping his heart pure and free from scars. (Psalm 26:2-3)

How difficult is giving your heart over to someone and then giving him or her permission to examine your heart over time? Given the earthly truths of this song, trusting someone with all our heart is very difficult. Too often we have been broken, we learn to live with the pain, we get used to living with the scars, and yet are there really someone who can be trusted with all our heart? Yes!

Conclusion:God is waiting on you. He will wait for you to accept Him and His never-ending love. He will not destroy your heart; rather He will make it stronger! God’s love and the gift of the Son’s life are a testimony to His character. Our attempt at love – true, heartfelt love – is a testimony to our failures without Him.

Justin BieberSong: Beauty and a BeatAlbum: Believe

By: Eric [email protected]

Teaching Point:The only thing you really need is to know Jesus.

Opening Questions: What are some things you depend on each day? Who do you count on to be there for you in times of need?Does a teenager have to be in a dating relationship to be complete? Explain.

Discussion: Justin Bieber’s “Beauty and a Beat” does nothing good for his boyish image for the millions of his adoring young fans. The song is a great dance number with a great beat and some killer slap bass. The quality stops there though as the lyrics shallowly imply that completeness comes through having an incredibly sexy companion to show off to the world. Bieber opens the song by declaring; “All I need is a beauty and a beat who can make my life complete.” For her appearance in the song, Nicki Minaj injects profanity, a veiled sexual reference, and a maybe a jab at Selena Gomez before Bieber returns to his declaration of the only thing that completes him.Have you ever hung out with someone you felt made you look good? Explain. What do you think makes your life complete? What do most of your peers look for in a date? What are the main factors influencing your happi-ness?Do you take issue with anything in this song? Explain.

Look up and discuss the how the following verses following contrast with the song:

Romans 12:3-6; Philippians 2:3-4; Matthew 5:28; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; 1 John 2:15-17

Conclusion:What makes you complete? Are you taking pride in temporary appearances and sensual desires? Although the path is difficult, the wisdom found in the Bible will help you be dependent fully on know-ing Jesus. Think about the verses you just read. How do you need to respond to the message in those verses? Are you seeking to live like the song, or like the Scripture?

Justin TimberlakeSong: Suit & TieAlbum: 20/20

By: Doug [email protected]

Teaching Point:Relationships

Opening Question:In what ways does the media try to make people look too good to be real? What is the problem with this?

Discussion:We are a culture full of those who are attracted to the glitz and glamor daily presented to us in a variety of ways. The constant media bombardment can leave us less than satisfied with the appear-ance of the opposite sex in everyday life. Those with an average appearance seem to all but fade into the woodwork. We like make-up, dressy, and

“drop-dead” gorgeous/handsome.

Justin Timberlake describes his night out with a girl who seems to be the dream of every guy. He says, “I can’t wait ’til I get you on the floor, good-looking, going out so hot, just like an oven.” The writer spends time describing this guy’s infatua-tion with the girl using various terms to describe her and the goal of their relationship. He wants to

“show you a few things about love.”

God invites us to enjoy the relationships He has given us with those of the opposite sex. Friendships, dating, and even marriage are all wonderful opportunities to understand more about others and ourselves.

Christ calls us to a standard of purity and respect in these relationships. We should admire the external and internal beauty of guys/girls and not just leave them at object level. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 presents the real definition of love: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

The lyrics of the song mention the word “it” more than once. In context, “it” seems to be taking love and making it an object. There is more to relation-ships than one night with a handsome/beautiful person. God offers us an eternal relationship with Him, and the privilege of living our lives with those we honor who are made in the image of God.

Conclusion:In what ways are you letting physical appearance be at the center of your relationships? What is one way you can honor a person of the opposite sex?

Macklemore with Ryan Lewis

Song: Thrift Store (Feat. Wanz)Album: The Heist

By: Kirk [email protected]

Teaching Point:Where is your treasure?

Opening Question:What are the best clothing labels?

Discussion:“Thrift Store” is a tongue-in-cheek song that pokes fun at the culture’s obsession with designer labels and overly expensive toys. It’s loaded with words that earn it an “explicit” warn-ing. And, it’s one of the only independent artist single releases ever to hit number one on the pop charts.

It also gives an excellent opportunity to talk about frugality.

Twenty Dollars in My PocketWhat kind of clothing collection do you think you could put together with twenty dollars? Mackl-emore seems to put together an endless amount of clothes he thinks are stylish and fashionable. It seems that with a little imagination, one can put together a great wardrobe without breaking the bank on designer labels.

Read Matthew 6:19-24.

•Is spending extravagantly on designer labels related to the idea of “where your treasure is?”

•How can spending extravagantly on the finest clothes be an example of serving desire instead of serving God?

•If you made a choice to spend much less on clothes by shopping for bargains and shopping at thrift shops, what do you think would be a great use for the money you saved?

•What else does the song and the Bible reading make you think about?

Conclusion:When the desire for the finest things becomes more important than following God’s way for your life, there’s a problem. Your friends will love you whether you have the best clothes or not. And God loves and cares for you just the way you are – no designer labels necessary.

Luke BryanSong: Drunk On YouAlbum: Tailgates and Tanlines

By: Gerard [email protected]

Teaching Point:In contrast with what our culture believes about dating, God gives great examples of relationships that have a solid foundation in Him. Once our desire is set on God and we submit ourselves unto His authority adding faith, God will give you that amazing person.

Opening Questions:How would you describe our concept of dating? What seems right, and what seems wrong about it? How does this song describe what’s going on between the guy and the girl?

Discussion:In Genesis 2, God brought Eve to Adam with the goal that this relationship would grow through Him. But, our dating system provides a false foundation. Instead of building a solid relationship found only through God, we accept the false imagination of the dating scene to disguise their emptiness. The deceit-ful power of the person’s heart (Jeremiah 17:9), the mind is hostile against God (Romans 8:7), and the flesh (1 John 2:16) sets its eye on physical appear-ances. The result: the heartache from the lack of fulfillment. In Genesis 2:25 Adam and Eve were not ashamed – they built a foundation along with God to ensure a stronger relationship.

Since God created us for relationships, do we sub-mit to His authority – both eternal and earthly? Why were Adam and Eve not ashamed? What does the Bible describe the heart, mind, and flesh?

Paul describes, in Romans 1:18-32, the horrific truth regarding when we suppress the truth in order to satisfy our desires. Once we exchange God’s truth and direction for a lie, then we experience the con-sequences, and further down into sin we go with our actions to satisfy our selfish desire.

Maybe the image of us being “the bride of Christ” (Ephesians 5:22-32) might help. Submit, respect, love, self-denial, and unity gives a whole new perspective our earthly relationships. Our greatest model is Jesus Christ’s giving all that He had – even to death. He submitted His life out of love, respect, and self-denial for our benefit and to restore our original relationship with God.

Conclusion:What are the differences of God’s way of building relationships verses our own or the dating scene? How can we encourage each other to build rela-tionships with God at the center?

Taylor SwiftSong: I Knew You Were TroubleAlbum:

By: Nick [email protected]

Teaching Point:There are things all around us that look attractive and fun; but, many of these things can/will lead straight to Hell.

Opening Questions:What are some things you can name that can be destructive to your life? Also, what are some things that are the “cool” thing to do at your age?

Discussion:In “I Knew You Were Trouble” Taylor tells a story of falling for guy that she knew would end up being a disaster in the end. At the beginning of the music video for this song, Taylor says, “How can the devil be pulling you toward someone who looks so much like an angel when he smiles at you?”

This song is about a relationship, but it is easy to see how this can relate to other areas of our lives. Even when we know that God wishes for us to avoid these things, and that we also may even know that these things can be destructive in our lives, that we still choose them. As Taylor says,

“The devil can make some very unattractive things look very, very attractive (my paraphrase).” A lot of us fall into this trap, and that isn’t okay.

Proverbs 14:12-13 (Message) says, There’s a way of life that looks harmless enough; look again—it leads straight to hell. Sure, those people appear to be having a good time, but all that laughter will end in heartbreak. That is definitely a fine descriptive way of explaining what will hap-pen if we choose the world.

In Daniel 1:3-16, Daniel and his comrades (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) have decid-ed to forego eating from the King’s table. That menu had to have been an attractive choice as it was the same food and drink that the King was dining on. Those four men “resolved to refuse” what the King, a.k.a. the world, was offering, and chose their only option: vegetables and water. And they came out ahead of the game because they denied the world!

Conclusion:We have a choice in life. We can choose a path that looks fantastic and fun right now (but that we have been warned leads to destruction), OR (and the better option, but also sometimes the harder and less fun option) we “resolve to refuse” what the world offers us. There’s no better time than now to make that decision!

Swedish House MafiaSong: Don’t You Worry ChildAlbum: Until Now

By: Cindy Engø[email protected]

Teaching Point:We can trust God because He has a plan for us.

Opening Questions:Have you ever wondered, “Why am I here? Why was I born? Is life going to get any better? Isn’t being a Christian means an easier life?”We have all had those feelings. Even people in the Bible went through depression and questioned why they were born.

Discussion:All of us go through feelings of doubt, depression, and questioning God. Sometimes we think that as Christ followers we should always be happy – if we do have doubts or go through depression, then there is something wrong with our faith in God. Even friends and family who don’t have faith in God will say stuff like, “Well I thought you were a Christian? Where is your God now?”

The Bible has many examples of people of faith who questioned God, experienced depression, and had doubts. Maybe these real people are in the Bible as examples for us and to let us know that we are not alone when we have these feelings.

Jonah 4:1 – First, God asked Jonah to do a task for Him. Jonah fled and ended up in the belly of a great fish. God saved him and he decided to do what God wanted him to do. His task was successful, and then Jonah said, “Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.” Okay, so you might be thinking, “Really dude, you did what God wanted. He blessed your ministry. Now, you want to die? What do you have to be depressed about?”

Job 3:3-4. Job lost everything and his response was, “May the day of my birth perish…” Wow, talk about going through some deep depression!

Read Matthew 27:46. Jesus willingly gave His life for our salvation. On the cross He cried out,

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) Come on, this is God’s Son. If He can get ques-tion God, than I guess we all will go through those feelings sometime in our lives.

Conclusion:So if we are all going to go through those feelings, what do we have to hold on to? Read Jeremiah 29:11. God says to us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to pros-per you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” So, don’t you worry, child!

Maroon 5Song: DaylightAlbum: Overexposed

By: Jessica [email protected]

Teaching Point:At some point we all must say goodbye to some-one we love either to death or them moving on.

Opening Questions:

•We live in a world where we must let go of oth-ers due to death or a move. How do we deal with missing someone we love?

•How do we deal with the memories and the pain in a way that helps us move closer to God instead of farther away?

Discussion:Throughout this song, we hear: “when the day-light comes I’ll have to go.” We all know that we are only on this earth for a limited amount of time. Why then do we have such a hard time letting go of someone?

Read John 11:23-26. What does this verse say about death?

Read Psalm 30:5. Is mourning the loss of a loved one okay?

Read John 14:1-4. In whom should we trust? What has He gone to do? What will happen to Christians when He comes back?

Conclusion: As followers of Christ, we know our death is just the beginning of our life. However, it saying good-bye to someone we love is very hard to do. As the song says, “when the daylight comes I’ll have to go, but tonight I’m gonna hold you so close.” Enjoy the people in your life while they are here, love them, and hold them close. When the time comes for them to go, give them to God knowing you will soon again see them.
