A Christmas WRAP! Christmas week is always a busy time with last minute details. It was no different at our Point of Hope Development Center in Romania as they prepared for a very busy week of ministry. The Fundatia Buckner staff was buying all of the supplies needed to distribute Christmas meals to each of the 97 families who have children attending the development center. A special thanks to Immanuel Lutheran in Compton, Illinois and First Lutheran in Lee, Illinois for providing the prayers and funds for this special meal. ACF would also like to thank each of the child sponsors who donated for some special gifts to their Romanian child. These extra gifts were delivered later in the week. The Fundatia Buckner staff was blessed to be in your prayers as they gave so generously of their time the week. On Tuesday of Christmas week the staff delivered the Christmas meals to as many families as possible. On Wednesday, the completion the delivery of the Christmas meals as families came to the Point of Hope to pick-up. On Thursday, the preschool kids performed a special skit for parents and were given Christmas gifts from Samaritan Purse & child sponsors. On Thursday, a very special Women’s ministry event took place at the Point of Hope. Finally, on Friday, Christmas gifts were delivered to kids that attend our after-school program from child sponsors. It was a very busy week but everyone was blessed and learned of the reason for the season! ACF could not do this ministry without the St. Matthew’s members and leaders. You all are SUPER-HERO’S in the eyes of our children. Thank you!

WEDDING COORDINATOR—POSITION

St Matthews Church Council is seeking individuals who are interested in the new position of Wedding Coordinator. Applications will be available beginning February 16. Council will check out the applications and decide on 3 people for the position with staggered 3 year terms. Please leave the applications in the office. Here is the description from our Wedding Guidelines Booklet:

To ensure that every detail of your wedding is properly planned and follows our church policies, the wedding coordinator will work closely with you. The wedding coordinator will meet with you as you begin planning and again one to three weeks prior to the wedding date. The wedding coordinator will be available to answer questions as they arise, as well as review our Wedding Guidelines provided to all couples. Every wedding which includes music and invited guests in our church facility must include the services and guidance of our wedding coordinator.

For off sight weddings we also recommend using our wedding coordinator to assist the presiding pastor. At the wedding rehearsal, the wedding coordinator and the officiating pastor will lead the participants through every detail of the wedding and insure that each person understands what is to happen on the day of the wedding.

On your wedding day, the wedding coordinator will see that everything runs smoothly from the time you arrive until after the wedding.

COUNCIL PRESIDENT St. Matthews Family,

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through

Christ who strengthens me. This is one of my favorite bible verses. It provides me comfort in many ways. As I start this month as your new Council President, I admit I am a little nervous. Yet when I go back to this verse, I am assured that Christ will give me strength and help guide me through this coming year.

Our new Constitution and our Long Range Vision Plan are now in place. I am excited to be involved in this journey with all of you! As Andy Dye mentioned a few Sundays ago, the Vision plan will not happen overnight. It will take time and patience on our part for all of this to come together.

In Sunday School, Sarah and I are teaching the children the fruits of the spirit. They are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self-control. A few weeks ago we learned about patience. To give the children an idea of patience, I told them how Tommy and I had to wait around 29 years for something we had wanted. Christ gave us the strength to wait, and when it happened it was a pure blessing. It was all worth the wait. Same thing with our visions we have for St. Matthews. They will happen. They will take time, and they will take patience.

St. Matthews is an exciting place to be. Let’s work together with Christ and watch amazing things happen.

Sandy Rose

2017 Congregation President Nominee

A NOTE FROM PASTOR SCOTT SCHMIDT “For surely I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord,

“plans for your good and to not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

T his Bible verse (from Jeremiah 29:11) is part of a painting behind my desk. It was a gift to me from a member of a congregation I

previously served because I frequently quoted this verse. For that person this verse not only gave hope for that congregation, but also for them personally.

May this Bible verse give us hope, because I do believe God has a plan for our future. As I see the enthusiasm among people here, as we begin doing

ministry with a new Constitution and our new Long-Range and Strategic Plan, this all points to a future here of Proclaiming and Living the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Lord has a plan with hope for our days and years to come. Thanks and praise to God!

In Jesus' name,

Pastor Scott Schmidt

Congregational Resourcing Event

The 2017 CRE will be Saturday March 11 at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta, IL.

The 2017 event will focus on the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Keynote Presenter will be the Rev. Dr. Winston Persaud, Wartburg Theological Seminary Professor of Systematic Theology, The Kent S. Knutson & UELC Professor in Theology & Mission

Director of the Center for Global Theologies. His keynote will be titled: “Christian Witness in a Pluralistic World – Cross Cultural Challenges,” which will bring insights from our Lutheran heritage and discuss ways in which we may respond to the contemporary crisis of defining and confessing the Gospel.

Sponsored by the Northern Illinois Synod Congregational Life Committee, the Congregational Resourcing Event (CRE) is one of this synod’s finest yearly events. Church council members, teachers, musicians, staff, volunteers, and leaders – just about everyone in a congregation – can take advantage of this learning event to strengthen skills, gather resources, network with others, and discover new ways to enhance congregational and individual ministries. Come, experience and bring home new ministry tools.

The Congregational Resourcing Event offers many varied educational workshop selections for you, your key congregational leaders, and other interested congregation members. Many groups, agencies, and institutions have displays.

Supervised child care in Kishwaukee College’s on-campus Early Childhood Center is provided with pre-registration. A free-will offering will be accepted to cover child-care costs.

In addition to workshops from the keynote speaker and NIS Bishop Jeffrey Clements, other workshops feature topics including: Administration/Council/Treasurers, Education, Evangelism/Outreach/Hospitality, Global/Inter-Faith, Leadership, Social Justice, Spirituality/Prayer/Health & Wellness, Stewardship, and Youth/Young Adult/Family Ministry.

Bring everyone from your congregation to attend different workshops. Then get together and learn from each other!

Session and room assignments will be based on how many people register for each workshop. This information and any updates will be posted here by March 1.

Kishwaukee College is located at 21193 Malta Road, Malta, IL 60150 between DeKalb & Rochelle on IL Route 38.

Kishwaukee College is handicap accessible.

Schedule 8:30–9:10 am – Registration & coffee
