Why AfDB?In response to the youth unemployment and migration crisis, the African

Development Bank adopted the Jobs for Youth in Africa (JfYA) Strategy.

Its objective is to create 25 million jobs and equip 50 million youth with

employable and entrepreneurial skills by 2025. Since the adoption of the

JfYA strategy in 2016 the Bank has invested over USD 20 billion in 318

projects that will impact youth directly on skills, entrepreneurship, business

development and job creation in African countries.

The Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Multi Donor

Trust Fund (YEI MDTF) is a grant vehicle that supports the

implementation of the Jobs for Youth Strategy. The trust fund

aims at addressing the unemployment gap by strengthening

the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Africa. Our objective is

to actively support youth create their own jobs and elevate

themselves from poverty.

The YEI Multi-Donor Trust Fund allows donors and partners

to leverage the Bank’s unique position and record of

accomplishment in responding to youth unemployment on the

continent. The presence of the development finance institution

in 54 African countries, and its proven ability to collaborate with

public and private institutions within the African context, will

accelerate the success of the trust fund.

The YEI Multi-Donor Trust Fund The Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Multi-Donor

Trust Fund (YEI MDTF) is a grant vehicle managed by

the African Development Bank to support the African

entrepreneurship ecosystem. Its objective is to promote

the creation of durable and sustainable jobs for youth

through entrepreneurship. It focuses its interventions on

equipping youth and women-led start-ups and micro, small

and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with skills and financial

support to run bankable businesses, as well as support

countries implement economic and social reforms to create

an enabling environment conductive to job creation.

DonorsCreated in 2017, the YEI MDTF has a lifespan of 5 years. The

initial anchor donors were the governments of Denmark and

Norway. Since then, the Trust Fund has gained increased

interest from the international community due to its impact on

youth and jobs, and in 2018, The Netherlands, Sweden and

Italy have also joined as donors. The Trust Fund achieved

an exponential growth, reflecting the strong and renewed

support from the international community in addressing youth

employment issues in Africa.

Its resources increased ten (10) folds within one year (2018) reaching nearly US$ 40 million.

We encourage both sovereign and non-

sovereign donors to contribute to the

YEI Trust Fund in order to support the

African Development Bank address the

pressing challenge of youth and women

unemployment, poverty and migration

through entrepreneurship.

GovernanceThe Multi-Donor operates within the

Bank’s policies and regulations using

robust fiduciary safeguard systems under

the authority of the Board of Directors.

We are inviting our donors to take part

in the governance structure of the trust

fund, with the aim to provide a dynamic

multi-donor solution:

– The Oversight Committee,

comprised of representatives of

donors and the Bank, will provide

strategic guidance and overall

supervision of the YEI MDTF.

– A Technical Committee, comprised

of sector experts from relevant

departments of the Bank will be

charged with technical guidance of

the YEI MDTF’ activities and review

of all technical assistance proposals.

principles, financial management

and access to formality;

• Research and studies: expanding

knowledge and intelligence

focused on the most pressing

entrepreneurship issues to address

and explore adequate solutions and

to African countries to strengthen

their enabling environment

by implementing policies and

regulatory reforms supportive of

entrepreneurship, development of

MSMEs and jobs creation for youth.
