d WelcometoYouthChallengeInternational’s2008/2009AnnualReport.Thisyearmarksanimportantturningpointintheorganization’shistorywiththelaunchofanewstrategy,“BuildingCommunitiesandLeadersThroughGlobalYouthDevelopment,”whichmapstheorganization’sstrategicpathwayforthenextfiveyears—sowhynow?

YCI’svisionforyouthdevelopmentisbuiltontheprincipalthat“YouthInnovationDrivesPositiveChange.”Ouraimistoprovideyoungpeoplewiththeopportunities,toolsandresourcestocreateandmanagesolutionstotheirdevelopmentchallenges.Byempoweringyoungpeopletobechangeagents,theycanbecomegloballeadersandrealizechangeintheircommunities.

YCIwillincorporateyouthdevelopment,volunteerism,partnership,equityandadvocacyintoallthatwedo.Thesecharacteristicswillensurethatourprogramsarefocused,accessible,equalandexplicitlyyouth-focused.Volunteerswillplayacentralroleindeliveringourglobalprograms,becomingadvocatesforyouthdevelopment.

Thereareover1.5billionyoungpeoplebetweentheagesof10and24livingintheworldtoday,makingthisthelargestglobalyouthcohortinhistory.Youngpeopleincreasinglyfacechallengesthatareuniversal—suchaslackofopportunitytocontributetothedevelopmentoftheircommunities,risingunemploymentrates,increasedbarrierstoeducationandhealth,andthedegradationoftheirenvironments.YCI’sprogramswillbedesignedwiththesechallengesattheforefrontofourintegratedyouthdevelopmentapproach.

YCI’sglobalvisionisnotpossiblewithoutthecommitment,dedicationandhardworkofourvolunteers,staff,partnersandyouth.Wearecountingonyoursupportinthecomingyear.

Wewouldalsoliketorecognizethecontinuedcontributionsandcommitmenttoyouthdevelopmentfromourdonors,includingtheCanadianInternationalDevelopmentAgency(CIDA),foundationsandprivateindividuals.ThankyouformakingthepastyearsuchasuccessforYouthChallengeInternational.

in ghana, 1,043 young women and men successfully comPleted active citizenshiP training Programs in 2008-2009.

Duringthe2008nationalelectioninGhana,YCIvolunteersandlocalyouthinitiatedacampaignfocusedondemocraticrights,theGhanaianelectoralsystem,theinvolvementofyoungpeopleinthepoliticalsystemandtheimportanceofvoting.AfterconsultingtheElectoralCommissionofGhanaforgender-disaggregateddataonthevotingpatternsofGhanaianyouth,volunteersandlocalyoungpeopledevelopedthe“ListenUp.SpeakOut.GetInvolved.”campaign,whichfocusedonencouragingyouthtovoteintheupcomingelection.Thecampaignincludedworkshopsonlocalgovernancemodels,leadershipandcommunityassetidentifications,multi-dayYouthSkillsSummits,andalocalmediacampaignthatincludedrecordingaradiojingleinTwi,EnglishandEwetitled“WhyVote.”AsaresultofYCI’sgovernanceprogramming,Ghanaianyouthwereabletomobilizetheirpeers,engageintheelectoralprocessandparticipateintheelection.

decision-makingforums,wheregovernanceisoften

hierarchicalandvestedinelders.YCIbelievesinthe

importanceofengagingyouthintheseprocessesand

helpsyoungpeopletoassumeleadershiproleswithin

theircommunities.Indoingso,YCIcollaborateswith

communityleaderstocreatementorshipopportunities,

assistswiththeformationandmanagementofyouth-

ledcommittees,identifiesappropriatecommunity

forumsforyouthparticipationandprovidestraining

opportunitiesforyoungpeopletostrengthentheir

leadershipskills.

projectbasedonenvironmentalconservation.Theprojecthassincedevelopedintoanopportunityforcapacity-building,environmentalawarenessraising,andachanceforcommunitymemberstodevelopalternatesourcesofincome.YCIvolunteersworkedwithcommunitymemberstoestablishworkshopsandconsultwithyouthinthelocalelementaryandhighschools.Theirworkfocusedonenvironmentaldegradation,includingthecontaminationofrivers,garbagedisposal,deforestationandanimalpoaching.Italsoexaminedtheeducationandemploymentbarriersfacedbyyouthinthecommunity.Theprojectculminatedinaone-dayawareness-raisingevent,whichservedtounifythecommunityonlocalenvironmentalissues.TheworkofYCIvolunteersandtheresidentsofJuanilamahassincecontinued,withtheintegrationoftheEarthCharter(aninternationaldeclarationoffundamentalvaluesandprinciplesforbuildingasustainableglobalsociety)principlesintomorerecentprojects.

TheestablishmentofanaturalreservationnearJuanilama,acommunityofabout500inCostaRica,allowedYCIandRetoJuvenilInternacional,ourpartnerorganization,todevelopaunique

Naturalresourcesforfuturegenerationsaredepleting—

however,theyouththatwillmanagethiscrisisinthe

futuretendnottobeengagedintheenvironmental

decision-makingforumsofthepresent.YCIbelieves

thatyouthnotonlyhavevestedconcernsintomorrow’s

resources,butalsohavearesponsibilitytobepartof

managingthemtoday.YCIengagesyouthineducation,

advocacy,policyandworkprojectsthatreflectthe

environmentalinterestsandconcernsofyoungpeople.

Ourprojectsaddresskeyenvironmentalissues,such

aswatersanitation,foodsecurity,climatechangeand

biodiversity.

between 2008-2009 more than 1170 young PeoPle attended yci & kwacha hiv/aids outreaches in mombasa.

InMombasa,thecombinationoftourism,EastAfrica’sbusiestportandalackofeconomicopportunitieshasledmanyyoungpeopletoseekalternativesourcesofincome—includingparticipationinthesextradeindustry.Localyouth,YCIvolunteersandpeereducatorsfromYCI’spartnerorganization,KwachaAfrika,organizedschoolandcommunityoutreaches,talentshowsand“ClubNights”inMombasa’sclubdistrict,allwithafocusonHIV/AIDSawarenessandtesting.Theseeventsutilizedtheskillsandknowledgeoflocallytrainedpeereducatorsandtargetedyoungsexworkers.TheClubNightspromotedcondomuseandHIVtesting,andmobilizedyouthtoaccessyouth-friendlyvoluntarycounselingandtesting(VCT)services.

Youngpeoplewhoarehealthyarebetterequippedto

contributetotheircommunitiestodayandinthefuture.

Forthisreason,healthisacentralissueconnectedto

allotherconsiderationsinsupportingthisdemographic.

Withnearlyhalfoftheworld’sinhabitantsunderthe

ageof20,healthprogrammingandservicestargeted

towardsyouthrepresentanincrediblylargecontribution

towardsaddressingkeyglobalhealthchallenges.YCI

deliverseducation,preventionandsupportservices

thatfocusonthemostimportantissues,includingHIV/

AIDS(thefirstcauseofmortalityinyouthworldwide),

malaria,tuberculosisandsubstanceabuse.

last year, over 160 tanzanian youth (including youth living with hiv/aids) ParticiPated in comPuter workshoPs.

AlackofjobtrainingopportunitiesandInformationandCommunicationTechnologies(ICT)skillshasresultedinhighratesofunemploymentforyoungpeopleinTanzania.YCI,localyouthandourpartnerorganization,ZANGOC,highlightedtheneedtodevelopbothvocationalskills,aswellasopportunitiestotranslatethoseskillsandapplytheminanemploymentsetting.LocalyouthandYCIvolunteersrespondedtothisneedbydevelopinganinnovativemethodthatprovidedvocationaltrainingandICTskillsinboththeoryandpractice.Bytheend,over160participantshaddevelopedtheskillsnecessarytosearchforjobsonlineanddeveloptheirresumes.Toallowparticipantstoapplytheirskillsinareal-worldsetting,theprogramalsocreatedlinkagesbetweenyoungpeopleandlocalemployment,aswellassmallbusinessopportunities.

Inthedevelopingworld,employmentprospectsare

extremelylimitedforyoungpeople.TheInternational

LabourOfficeestimatesthat88.2millionyoungwomen

andmenareunemployedglobally,accountingfor47%

ofallunemployedpersons.YCIaddressesglobalyouth

employmentchallengesbysupportingyoungpeople

inearningasustainableliving.YCIachievesthisby

providingbasiclivelihoodandemployabilitytraining

toyouth,supportingsmallbusinessdevelopmentand

aidingaccesstomicrograntsandmicrocreditfacilities

throughourglobalpartnerships.

In Region 10 of Guyana, the school in Rockstone wasgreatly understaffed, with only two teachers and some localvolunteerstoattendtotheneedsofnearly60students.Inthenearby community ofAnareka, another school faced similarchallenges.YCIvolunteersfromGuyana,CanadaandAustraliaworkedtogethertodevelopliteracyprogramsinthecommunity.Volunteers hosted a weekly reading club to help studentswithreading,spellingandwriting.Twoofthevolunteersalsohad Spanish-language skills and initiated Spanish classes inboth communities.Throughout Guyana,YCI volunteers haveaddressedthechallengesoflowlevelsofliteracy,understaffedschoolsandlackofrecreationalactivitiesbyorganizingchessclubsanddramaclubs,andbyperformingLifeSkillsTrainingsessionsinhighschoolswithafocusonsubstanceabuseandgoalsetting.

Thereissufficientevidencetoindicatethatthecurrent

generationofyouthisthebesteducatedtodate.Yet,

113millionyoungpeoplearenotinschoolandan

estimated130millionyouthcannotreadorwrite.

Thisisfurthercompoundedbydisparaginggender

gapswithintheeducationsystemandalackof

collaborationbetweenformal,non-formalanddistance

learninginitiatives.YCIworkscloselywitheducational

ministriesandschoolstoprovidesupportincurriculum

developmentandtheestablishmentofboys’andgirls’

clubs.Withinoureducationprogramming,YCIhasan

explicitliteracyfocusandprovidesneededsupportfor

essentialteachertraininginitiatives.

nt YCI’sYouthEngagementprogramharnessestheenergyofrecentlyreturnedalumniandtheenthusiasmoftheirpeersto

makelocal/globalconnections.FocusingonthekeysectorsthatYCIspecializesin,theYouthEngagementprogramallowsparticipantstoconnecttheirglobalexperienceswithchangeintheirlocalcommunitiesacrossCanada.TheVolunteerAdvisoryCouncil(VAC)istheleadershipbodyforouractive,nationalVolunteerActionNetwork.OurVACmembersareyouthleaderswhoinspireandencourageotherstobecomeengagedinglobalcitizenshipthroughthedevelopmentofinnovativecommunityinitiativesthatfocusonglobalissues.TheVolunteerActionNetwork(VAN)allowsreturnedalumniandotheryouthtoaddresshowourownactionsaffectbothourglobalandlocalcommunities.Actionteamsgenerateideas,conductresearch,raiseawarenessandengagethegeneralpubliconpressingdevelopmentissues.Thissubstantiveleadershipandengagementopportunitynotonlyprovidesyoungpeoplewithskillsandnetworks,butalsotheabilitytomovefromopiniontoinformedactionthroughthedevelopmentoflocalprojects.In2008/09,morethan50youthparticipatedinfiveactionteamsfocusedonextremepoverty,youthleadership,HIV/AIDS,environmentalsustainabilityandactivecitizenship.Throughtheirworkshops,eventsandknowledgepieces,theactionteamsengagedhundredsofyouthacrossCanada.
