    Let the Spirit encompass you!

    Director's message

Te Bible says in John 4:23, "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship theFather in spirit and truth, or they are the kind o worshipers the Father seeks." Tis verse is my base to believethat God does not want religious people but "worshipers in spirit and truth". Spirituality has been always relatedto religion. I a person reads the Bible or goes requently to the church, he/she is considered religious. Whatpeople have not understood is that spirituality is totally different rom religion. Some 'differently abled' peopleconsider it unnecessary, and stay in a antasy world where they choose to stay away rom the very essence ospirituality. Certainly, they are separate.

Since God created the world, He wanted us to have a relationship with him, which would stay strong or eternity. But has there been some misunderstanding? Is there something misleading among all this, that people ain't reallypracticing it? I have always had this question! God is not interested in people going to church, i they do notknow Him. God does not want us singing in church i we do not love Him with our heart. God is not interestedin people knowing the whole Bible i they do not apply what they read. God is not interested in rituals thatwould satisy people by praising Him. On the other hand, God is interested in changing the heart and in having apersonal relationship with the people.

At times when I had allen, I couldn't iner it's essence and importance in lie. Tat's when I related it with Hope.Hope is a positive and potent spiritual practice with the power to pull us through difficult times. It is usually

described with light metaphors a ray, a beam, a glimmer o hope etc. It is ofen discovered in unexpectedplaces. All have different perspectives; but all that Spirituality does is maintain a relationship with God that staysstrong or eternity. Hope is one such aspect that builds such a bonding. Tis edition o youth beats ocuses onthis bonding between You and God. Be strong and stern in Spirituality and you shall receive the inner peace, asolution to all the agony, conusions and problems.

Entrust the past to the mercy o God and the uture to his providence, and make o the present an act o whole-hearted says St. Augustine. It is said that to live ully in the present moment is extremely difficult. Since we are

beings o time, our constant temptations are to live in the past or in the uture. When we live in the past or the

uture, our inner selves are divided and scattered, our energies are dissipated and the results are atigue, tension,

irritation and discouragement, with the consequent repercussions on others.

Te past, however, which has shaped us, can be o great help or us to live more ully in the here and now. In the

same way positive attitudes towards the uture can help us live today peaceully, contentedly and ruitully. We

have to remind ourselves that God is in the present His name is I AM (not I was or I will be). Our God is

a God o here and now. It is a sacred gif and is called the sacrament o the present moment because it mediates

the presence and action o God. Tereore my dear riends; be in the present and live out your lie in Christ as

    you are young now.

We live in a world that is enguled in materialism.Spirituality, religion. Oh, Come on, these areancient obsolete words ,who wants to talk about it in

this modern world!. Now, we worship science and her

offspring technology. echnology is not bad in itsel

rather good or it was intended to simpliy humanlives so that humans may use their time more ruitully

but its idolization is disastrous. Pleasure is all that we

seek and we orget that we have a soul within us that is

    groaning or nourishment.

Spirituality is nourishment or the spirit within us..

Anyone who believes he has a soul(spirit) believes he is

immortal. Our Soul is the immortality within us .We are

called to the eternal banquet o Christ. Why spirituality

is important? We were created by God and our deepest

desires can only be ulfilled by him. Spirituality takes

us closer to the perect happiness, truth and beauty i.e.

    God.

As C.S. Lewis says in Mere Christianity What Satan put

into the heads o our remote ancestors was the idea that

they could be like godscould set up on their own as

i they had created themselvesbe their own masters

invent some sort o happiness or themselves outside

God, apart rom God. And out o that hopeless attempt

has come nearly all that we call human historymoney, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires,

slaverythe long terrible story o man trying to find

something other than God which will make him happy.

God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart rom

Himsel, because it is not there. Tere is no such thing.

Unlike Sciences where we test every hypothesis based

on empirical evidence and then believe it, in spirituality

as St. Augustine puts it we believe so that we mayunderstand and understand so that we may believe

.Faith is a prerequisite or Spirituality. We are not dealing

with mathematical models but proound mysteries

that are beyond human comprehension. Whatever we

know about God comes rom the revelation o God

throughout history with its culmination in the ultimate

revelation o Christ. Spirituality is also the oundation

o Morality. A world that looks on the word morality

with contempt tries to invent a spirituality without

    morality. Beware o such spiritualities.

Te truly spiritual are the truly virtuous people who

are striving day and night to be a saint. Virtues are

spiritual gifs that we get rom God but we have to take

the first step in desiring them, praying or it. Catholic

Spirituality helps us turn ourselves to God, saying a

rosary every day , attending the mass requently gives

us the energy to carry out our responsibilities with love.

As someone said the lack o time is due to the lack o

prayer .Let us find some time or communicating withour loving creator, let us grow in holiness, listen to our

hearts and hear his serene voice in this madding crowd.

    We have a

    Spirit within us !

In the poem Rime o the Ancient Mariner by Samuel . Coleridge, we see a sailor returning rom a long voyagewho stops a man going to a wedding and begins to narrate his story. Te mariner says, that despite initial goodortune on his voyage, the ship is driven by a storm to southern waters, where an albatross appears, which leadsthem out o the icy waters, and is eventually praised by the ships crew, seeing it as a good omen. But the marinershoots the bird and the crew is angry with him, believing the albatross brought the south winds that led them. However, when the weather clears, they change their minds.

Te poet continues by saying that southern winds pursue the ship and sends it to uncharted waters when itwitnessed the crews support or the crime o the mariner. Te crew again blame the mariner as they are lostand suffer unquenchable thirst and orce him to wear the dead albatross around his neck as a sign o regret.Eventually, one by one the crew members die and the mariner is alone with their corpses staring at him with acurse. Te mariner upon seeing the creatures swimming in the water appreciates their beauty and blesses them, suddenly as he manages to pray, the albatross alls rom his neck and his curse and guilt is partially expiated. Tebodies o the crew are now possessed by good spirits who rise and help steer the ship. At last the mariner comesin sight o his homeland, but the rotten remains o the ship sinks in a whirlpool. A hermit on the mainland seesthe sinking ship and comes to meet it with his son and a pilot, in a boat. Tey rescue the mariner, who they thinkis dead, but when the mariner opens his mouth and picks up the oars o the boat to row, the others get scaredthinking that the mariner is possessed by the devil and the son cries in bewilderment, Te Devil knows how torow. Te mariner, driven by guilt or shooting the albatross, is orced to wander the earth, telling his story overand over and teaching a lesson to those he meets:

He prayeth best, who loveth bestAll things both great and small; For the dear God who loveth us,He made and loveth all

Afer relaying the story, the mariner leaves and the wedding guest returns home filled with mixed emotions, andwalks the next morning a sadder and a wiser man.

Te poem explores a violation o nature and the resulting psychological effects on the mariner and on all those

who hear him. It is a story about delusions and how people see supernatural and superstitious orces as a reasonor the consequences in their lives. Many say that the poem doesnt have a moral, but upon realizing the marinersquest we see how a heavy burden o guilt becomes an obstacle to prosperity and success. So let us pray that weclear whatever guilt we have in our mind and spirit and come a step closer to inner peace.

Inner PeaceLet us pray that we clear whatever guilt we have in

our mind and spirit and come a step closer to innerpeace.

    Diana ThomasR. K. Puram

One o the most complex questions we come acrossin our paths to spirituality is that where do we findGod. And almost all our lives we search or answersto this question. In this context, the gospel o St. John-Chapter 1, Verses 35-39 can give us a lot o answers. Inthis passage, we see the two disciples o John havingheard his testimony, ollow Jesus on His way. Andwhen Jesus sees them both and asks them what theyare looking or, they answer with a counter- question

which is unexpected, conusing and yet deep, Rabbi, where are you staying?

Te reason I call this question unexpected and conusingis because when we think o it none o us would ask Jesusor any person where he stays when we meet them orthe first time. Had you or I been in that place, we mighthave had asked all sorts o questions ranging rom Canwe be your disciples? to Are you really the Messiah?Anything, we would have asked anything but certainlynot enquire about where He stays. And now when they

do ask a perplexing question, our Jesus decides to makeit even more difficult or us to understand by answeringCome and see. I mean, look at the situation, none ous I am sure would tell complete strangers to come andsee where we stay. And then look at how Jesus answersit. Tat is Jesus, the master o code languages!

But then when we come to reflect on this episode, wefind how deep yet easy it is to figure out what Jesuswants to tell us. Te context in which the disciples

asked Jesus about his place o residence was right aferJesus was baptized and right beore he began his publicministry. It is then that Jesus invites them to where heis going- he was going to live among his people! When

Jesus asks them to come and see, he does not want themonly to have a glance at the lie he was going to live butit was a call to come and live with him. It was a call to befishers o men. Jesus invitation was or an invitation ora lietime- to live with the sick, the suffering, the sinuland the sorrowul and to love them as ourselves.

Te call to come and see was not only or Jesusdisciples but each and every one o us to find God in

our neighbours. In order to find God, love Him andlive with Him we need to love the other just as He lovedus. We must be ready to serve and to give ourselves toother in order to be worthy to be called His disciples.Looking at it rom another light, we can see Jesus livingin us. He lives in us, with us, as us in the orm o thebread o lie. He gave up his godly orm to dwell withinthe temples o our body. And when he calls us to comeand see, it is a call to share this lie in Him, to shareand partake in the bread o lie. In this Malayalamdevotional song Eshwarane Tedi Njan Alanju by

Fr. Abel, we hear about longing o a man to find Godand in that quest he looks or God in every nook andcranny. It is not anywhere that we find God but as thissong beautiully describes, man finally finds God whenhe turns to himsel, and he finds God when he walkstowards his own heart. It is there, in the deep recesseso our hearts, that God lives in the orm o love.

Te invitation to come and see where Jesus lives is inront o all o us. It is on us to accept the call. And when

we finally do accept His call and find where He lives, there is no going back. No going back to our old lives. For the scripture says, Tey came and saw where hewas staying and remained with him.
